Thus, while there are a number of processes for producing water-absorbent and water-retaining compositions, there is still a need for improved products and processes that have good properties and are easy to use in many ways that are environmentally friendly and produce renewable raw materials in the form of waste materials and by-products, which arise in the processing of renewable raw materials, and thus can find a meaningful and environmentally friendly recovery, and thus have a better life cycle assessment and at the same time an acceptable decomposability and their manufacturing process is extremely economical.

The object of the invention is also to provide a method that allows the use of extremely inexpensive waste and by-products, which are often worthless and often worthless as such, or have only a very low economic value, and thus allows a very represents economic process, with the production of extremely low-cost mass products and thus a broad and nationwide use u. a. also possible in developing countries.
This object is achieved by a method according to claim 1.
In the graft polymerization, the monomers are neutralized with a base prior to graft polymerization. However, it has been found that it is more advantageous if the neutralization is carried out only after the graft polymerization, whereby the capacity for water absorption is again significantly increased.

Th.) Pfropfpolymerisat erhalten. Die Quellkapazität des auf dieser Weisen hergestelltes Produktes beträgt pro 1 g 210 g VE-Wasser, 160 g Trinkwasser und 40 g 1%ige Natriumchlorid-Lösung500 g of coarsely ground barley straw (8.8% moisture) are placed in a 101 drainer. With stirring, a solution of 1152 g (16 mol) of acrylic acid (dissolved in 1.51 ve water), 896 g (16 mol) of potassium hydroxide (dissolved in 3.51 ve water) and 35 g of methylenebisacrylamide is added. The suspension is purged with nitrogen for ½ hour. Thereafter, a solution of 4 g of ammonium persulfate in 200 ml of VE. Water was added dropwise and the mixture was stirred at 90 ° C for 2 hours. After cooling 41 methanol are added to solid graft polymer with stirring. The reaction mixture is removed from the reactor, the supernatant liquid poured off, the graft polymer is added 2x in 41 methanol, crushed using an Ultraturax, filtered off and then dried at 70 ° C in a vacuum oven. This gives 2130 g (94.2% of theory) of graft polymer. The swelling capacity of the product produced in this manner is 1 g of 210 g of deionised water, 160 g of drinking water and 40 g of 1% sodium chloride solution
