Description
The invention relates to a process for the production of magnetic expanded glass granules.
The background of the invention is to be shown in more detail below for better understanding thereof. For example, microbial production processes are increasingly being used as part of the use of renewable raw materials for energy production, as well as for the food and chemical industries. In some cases, microorganisms that grow very slowly under the appropriate conditions must be used for certain process steps. After the reactions, these microorganisms are largely lost with the product stream in conventional process engineering. It would be favorable, however, to retain the microorganisms in the reaction medium or in the reaction space. For this purpose, an immobilization on inert materials offers. A particularly elegant method employs magnetic carrier particles which, with the aid of appropriate magnets, make it possible to retain the carriers together with microorganisms in the corresponding process, without the risk of clogging.
An example of such an application is the production of biogas. In the last step, methane is formed with the aid of the methanogenic bacteria from H 2 and CO 2 or from acetic acid or other low molecular weight compounds, such as methylamine or the like anaerobic and reducing conditions. For reasons of thermodynamics, the methanogenic bacteria can achieve only a very low energy gain per reacted substrate molecule, so that long generation times are an inevitable and unavoidable consequence. For this reason, the start-up phase of new biogas reactors takes a long time. If a biogas reactor of conventional design has reached its operating state, as long as the growth rate of the slowest-growing microorganisms is greater than the leaching rate or the discharge rate, a stable operation can be maintained. The leaching rate or discharge rate may be permanently as long as the growth rate of the slowest growing microorganisms; then the upper performance limit of this biogas reactor is reached. If even more substrate is entered into the biogas plant, the fermentation residue must be discharged even faster. Then, the washout rate exceeds the maximum growth rate of the slowest growing microorganisms (mostly methane gas bacteria). If this condition lasts longer, the biogas plant continuously loses the slowly growing methane gas bacteria until it collapses. It must therefore come to a decoupling of the substrate throughput of the content of active biomass.
This can in principle be done in two ways. On the one hand, the magnetic particles are significantly smaller than the microorganisms, the microorganisms, the magnetic particles in extracellular polysaccharides, ie in slime substances that hold the flakes record. On the other hand, if the magnetic particles are significantly larger than the microorganisms or their flakes, then the microorganisms can colonize the surface of the magnetic particles and form biofilms there. The agglomerates of magnetic particles and bacteria can be retained in the outlet of the bioreactor with the corresponding magnet. It could be shown that both the space and the mud load could be increased. In addition, the start-up phase could be shortened by the use of magnetic particles.
While the feasibility of the process has been demonstrated in the above referenced patent, few magnetic particles are known which are suitable for a long residence time in the biogas reactor. Thus, many of the magnetic powders available on the market are too finely divided. Free magnetic fine particles move too slowly in the magnetic field, so that they are partially entrained with the product stream and discharged from the bioreactor. Even in flakes ingrown magnetic Feinstpartikel be z. T. again released and then subject to the partial discharge. In the course of numerous retention cycles, the losses are then too large.
It is also favorable for the particles to set a density of about 1 g / cm 3 so that they neither sink to the bottom of the biogas reactor nor float, because the reaction media are generally not stirred vigorously. Third, there is a need for improved mechanical properties, since in biogas plants such particles should go through as many cycles as possible.
In order to provide such magnetic particles inexpensively, in particular glass as a matrix, optionally made of waste glass, would be particularly suitable. Thus, the two publications "Biodegradation of nonylphenol in a continuous packed bed bioreactor", Ana Soares et al., Biotechnology Letters, 25: 927-933, 2003, and "Biological degradation of chlorophenols in packed-bed bioreactors using mixed bacterial consortia ", Hamid Zilouei et al., Process Biochemistry 41, 2006, 1083-1089, that the glass foam particles Poraver ® the Applicant are suitable as carrier materials for microorganisms.

The invention is based on the object to provide mechanically stable magnetic particles of inorganic glass, which are suitable as growth carriers for microorganisms and also for Bioseparationsprozesse.
- Mixing glass flour and magnetic pigments of one or more ferrimagnetic materials,
- Dispersing this mixture into a preferably homogeneous first premix,
- Mixing at least part of this first premix with blowing agent, binder and water to form a homogeneous slurry,
- Granulating the slip using the remainder, if any, of the first premix into magnetic expanded glass granule green bodies, and
- - Foaming the expanded glass granules green bodies to magnetic expanded glass granules at temperatures of 600 ° C to 950 ° C.
According to claim 2 magnetic pigments in the form of γ-Fe 2 O 3 - and / or magnetite - (= Fe 3 O 4 -) particles are used.
Quite unexpectedly, it has been found in this context that despite the high temperatures required for firing the expanded glass particles, after the incorporation of magnetic particles, a significant magnetization of the end products is observed.
The ferrimagnetic materials, which retain their magnetization after switching off an external magnetic field, are so-called magnetically hard materials. Ferrimagnetism is characterized at the atomic level by two different sized opposite magnetic vectors resulting from the spinel structure of these oxidic materials.
Both magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) and γ-Fe 2 O 3 fall under such ferrimagnetic substances. From ferromagnetic materials, these can be demonstrably demarcated by spinel structure and oxidic chemistry.
Particularly suitable ferrimagnetic materials appear to be as soft as possible, since they lose their magnetization as far as possible after switching off the magnetic field and thus less liable to each other. An extreme case is the so-called super-paramagnetism of nano-γ-Fe 2 O 3 . Essentially, superparamagnetism means that hysteresis behavior no longer occurs.
- From 30 to 50, preferably 40% by weight of γ-Fe 2 O 3 (maghemite)
- - 20 to 30, preferably 24 mass% Fe 3 O 4 (magnetite)
- - 5 to 15, preferably 10 mass% α-Fe 2 O 3
- - 15 to 20, preferably 17 mass% SiO 2 (cristobalite) and
- - 6 to 12, preferably 9 mass% SiO 2 (quartz).
In the production of the magnetic glass particles, the procedure is such that the used glass powder and the other raw materials are mixed with commercially available magnetic pigments. These may have a magnetite or a γ-iron oxide phase. When working with magnetite, it is necessary to carry out the high temperature treatment of the resulting product under inert gas. When working with γ-iron oxide, it was surprisingly found that a protective gas atmosphere is not necessary in order to obtain significant magnetizabilities in the final product. This is all the more surprising, as the pure γ-Fe 2 O 3 at temperatures greater than 300 ° C per se in α-Fe 2 O 3 , wherein the magnetizability is lost (see, for example, Holleman-Wiberg, textbook of inorganic chemistry, Walter de Gruyter (1985), p. 1138).
By the process control, as described in the examples, it is possible in particular to adjust the particles according to the invention so that they have a density of about 1 and thus neither sediment nor float in the reaction medium. By suitable variation of the process control, the density can also be adapted to other requirements if necessary.
The magnetic particles produced according to the invention can be used in addition to the methane gas bacteria for a variety of other slowly growing bacteria or microorganisms as a carrier. Applications could z. As fermentations in the pharmaceutical industry, the dairy industry, the sugar industry, the paper industry, etc. be. Another application is the immobilization of hydrogen-producing microorganisms or nitrifying or deammonifying bacteria in the wastewater sector. In addition, use of the above-mentioned o. G. Magnetic particles in adsorption, chemical or enzymatic reactions possible; possibly after previous surface modification. Also, magnetic carriers of appropriate size can be used for cell culture cells or eukaryotic cells.
In the dependent claims preferred developments of the method according to the invention are given. Thus, the dispersion of the glass flour-magnetic pigment mixture to the first homogeneous premix can be done by dry or wet dispersing. The proportions of glass flour and magnetic pigments in this first premix are preferably from 65 to 92% by weight for glass flour and 8 to 35% by weight for the magnetic pigments, with a particularly preferred premix containing about 80% by weight glass flour and 20% magnet particles by weight ,
The proportions of the components of the second premix are preferably in the range of 30 to 99% by weight for waterglass, 0 to 70% by mass for water and 1 to 10% by mass of blowing agent, preferably in the form of sodium nitrate. Particularly preferred ranges are 54 to 56 mass% for water glass, 43 to 44 mass% for water and 2 to 2.5 mass% for the blowing agent.
Values of from 2: 1 to 4: 1, more preferably from 2.7: 1 to 3.0: 1, are to be stated as preferred mass ratios between the first and second premix.
In a manner known per se, the expanded glass granulate green bodies can be dried and classified before foaming.
The invention will now be explained in more detail with reference to examples. Before describing these, the first step is to present the basics of measurement and analysis for the presented results.
The following methods are used to characterize the glass particles.
BET-Oberfläche/Porenvolumen nach BJH und BET:
Die Oberfläche und das Porenvolumen wurden mit einem vollautomatischen Stickstoffporosimeter der Firma Micromeritics Typ ASAP 2010 bestimmt.BET surface area / pore volume after BJH and BET:
The surface area and the pore volume were determined with a fully automatic nitrogen porosimeter from Micromeritics type ASAP 2010.
The sample is cooled in a high vacuum to the temperature of liquid nitrogen. Subsequently, nitrogen is continuously metered into the sample chambers. By detecting the adsorbed amount of gas as a function of pressure, an adsorption isotherm is determined at a constant temperature. In a pressure equalization, the analysis gas is gradually removed and a desorption isotherm is recorded.
To determine the specific surface area and the porosity according to the BET theory, the data are evaluated in accordance with DIN 66131.
Das Porenvolumen wird ferner aus den Messdaten unter Anwendung der BJH-Methode ermittelt (I. P. Barret, L. G. Joiner, P. P. Hai-enda, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 73, 1991, 373). The pore volume is also determined from the measurement data using the BJH method (I.P. Barret, L.J. Joiner, P.P. Hai-enda, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 73, 1991, 373). This procedure also takes into account effects of capillary condensation. Pore volumes of certain volume size ranges are determined by summing up incremental pore volumes obtained from the evaluation of the BJH adsorption isotherm. The total pore volume by BJH method refers to pores with a diameter of 1.7 to 300 nm.
Wassergehalt:Water content:
The water content of the products at 105 ° C is determined using the method DIN / ISO-787/2.
Bestimmung des SchüttgewichtsDetermination of bulk density
A graduated cylinder cut off at the 1000 ml mark is weighed. Then, the sample to be examined is filled by means of a Pulvertrichters so in a train in the measuring cylinder that forms above the end of the measuring cylinder, a pour cone. The pour cone is removed by means of a ruler, which is led over the opening of the measuring cylinder, and the filled measuring cylinder is weighed again. The difference corresponds to the bulk density.

The resulting green bodies are foamed with an addition of 10 to 15% by mass of kaolin as a release agent in a rotary kiln at temperatures between 780 ° C and 815 ° C over a period of 15 minutes. Depending on the foaming temperature, bulk densities in the range between 492 g / l and 710 g / l result, whereby as a rule the bulk density decreases with increasing foaming temperature.
The foamed particles of the magnetic expanded glass granules thus produced are then classified again and used in a size of 0.1 mm to 0.3 mm for the use experiments described below.

2. Verfahrensvariante2. Process variant
These ingredients are dry-dispersed in a blender.
These ingredients are diverged in a mixer to a homogeneous slurry, which is heated.
This second batch is also dispersed dry in a mixer.
The two batches of premix 1 and premix 2 are granulated in a Hobart mixer with stages 1-2-1. The expanded glass granulate green bodies thus produced are dried for several hours at a temperature of 105 ° C.
To produce the actual magnetic expanded glass granulate particles, the abovementioned green bodies are foamed with about 30% by volume (bedding) of kaolin as release agent in a chamber furnace at 740 ° C. over a period of 0.5 hours. The result is a magnetic expanded glass granules with a bulk density of 505 g / l.
3. Verfahrensvariante3. Process variant
In a third process variant for the production of magnetic expanded glass granules, a laboratory spray tower is used for the granulation of a slip suspension.
These ingredients are ground in a ball mill for about 20 min and homogenized.
These ingredients are dispersed in a mixer into a homogeneous slurry which is sprayed in a spray tower by means of an annular die.
The granule green bodies produced therewith are then foamed to form magnetic expanded glass granules as indicated in process variants 1 or 2.
Incidentally, this can finally be broken, in order to achieve an open porosity of the surface, which ensures an improvement in the colonization of the granules with bacteria.
