Description
The invention relates to a method for loading a planar component of a fuel cell with catalyst material, such a catalyst material, a planar component loaded with the catalyst material, in particular a current collector for a fuel cell, and a fuel cell stack equipped with such components.
To generate electrical energy by means of fuel cells, a larger number of fuel cells is usually arranged in the form of a stack, the fuel cells each having an anode, a cathode and an electrolyte arranged between the anode and the cathode. The individual fuel cells of the stack are separated from each other by bipolar plates and electrically contacted. Current collectors are respectively provided at the anodes and the cathodes, which serve to electrically contact the anodes or cathodes, on the one hand, and to pass reaction gases past these, on the other hand. In the edge region of the anode, cathode and electrolyte matrix each sealing elements are provided which form a lateral seal of the fuel cell and thus the fuel cell stack against leakage of anode and cathode gas.
In a molten carbonate fuel cell, the electrolyte material typically consists of binary or ternary alkali carbonate melts (for example mixed melts of lithium and potassium carbonate) fixed in a porous matrix. In operation, molten carbonate fuel cells typically reach working temperatures of about 650 ° C. In this case, on the anode side, a reaction of hydrogen with carbonate ions to water and carbon dioxide takes place with electron release. On the cathode side, oxygen reacts with carbon dioxide to form carbonate ions with electron uptake. This heat is released. On the one hand, the alkali carbonate melt used as the electrolyte supplies the carbonate ions required for the anode half reaction and, on the other hand, absorbs the carbonate ions formed in the cathode half reaction. In practice, the anode side of the fuel cell is usually a hydrocarbon-containing energy source, such as methane, which can be derived for example from natural gas or biogas, and fed water from which is obtained by so-called internal reforming the hydrogen required for the anode half reaction. The anode exhaust gas is mixed with additionally supplied air and then catalytically oxidized to remove any residual components of the fuel gas. The resulting gas mixture now contains carbon dioxide and oxygen, that is, exactly the gases required for the cathode half-reaction, so that anode exhaust gas can be introduced directly into the cathode half-cell after fresh air supply and catalytic oxidation.
The hot exhaust air leaving the cathode outlet is free of pollutants and can be reused thermally. The electrical efficiency of the molten carbonate fuel cell is already 45 to 50% and using the heat released in the overall process, an overall efficiency of about 90% can be achieved.
The internal reforming to recover the hydrogen needed for the anode half reaction from a hydrocarbonaceous energy source can be carried out in the fuel cell stack in essentially two ways. In the so-called indirect internal reforming (IIR) several separate chambers, in which a reforming catalyst material is located within the fuel cell stack. The hydrocarbonaceous energy source to be reformed is first passed through these chambers. The hydrogen-gas-containing reformed energy carrier is then passed into the anode half-cells of the fuel cell stack. In the so-called direct internal reforming (DIR), the reformed catalyst is located inside the anode chambers of the fuel cell, so that the hydrogen gas released during the reforming is produced directly at the anode.
Regardless of whether the catalyst is applied to the current collector as prefabricated pellets, as an extruded catalyst mass or as a planar coating, and also irrespective of whether the surface of the current collector is substantially planar or profiled by depressions and / or ribs, it usually becomes instantaneous the application of the catalyst material, an adhesive applied to the surface of the current collector to be coated with catalyst to improve the maintenance of the catalyst material on the surface of the current collector in the further handling, in particular in the subsequent drying of the catalyst material and in the assembly of the fuel cell stack. This additional glue application step increases the manufacturing cost of the current collector and can lead to manufacturing problems. The adhesive system used is usually water-based. Therefore, the adhesive may dry within the needle, which may result in partial or complete blockage of the glue needle, so that no glue is applied in some places on the current collector. If such a disturbance is not noticed, this can lead to the subsequent catalyst, especially in the dry state, no longer adhering and can fall out of this during further handling of the current collector.
The present invention is therefore based on the technical problem of providing a method for loading a planar component of a fuel cell, in particular a current collector of a fuel cell, with catalyst material, which is simpler and less expensive than the known methods. In addition, a suitable catalyst material for carrying out this method is to be provided.
This technical problem is solved by the method according to the present patent claim 1 and the catalyst material according to the
The invention accordingly relates to a method for loading a planar component of a fuel cell with catalyst material, wherein a substantially planar component of the fuel cell is provided, applying a catalyst material to at least one surface of the planar component, wherein the catalyst material is an adhesive for improving the adhesion of the catalyst material the surface of the sheet-like component comprises. Surprisingly, it has been found that it is possible to apply a catalyst material which itself contains a suitable adhesive, so that it is no longer necessary to apply an adhesive to the planar component before the application of the catalyst material. In the method according to the invention, therefore, neither the planar component must have an adhesion-imparting coating, nor is it necessary to apply an adhesion promoter or adhesive to the planar component before the application of the catalyst material.
Preference is given to using an adhesive which, prior to the application of the catalyst material, still acts on the surface of the planar component Has no or no pronounced adhesive properties, so that the handling of the catalyst material, in particular the application of the catalyst material to the sheet-like component itself, not hindered or limited. Preferably, therefore, an adhesive is used which can be activated, ie can be changed from a non-adhesive to an adhesive state. Numerous chemically or physically activatable adhesives are known to the person skilled in the art. However, a chemical activation is usually associated with a further process step, in which an activator must be applied. Therefore, the adhesive according to the invention particularly preferably comprises a physically activatable adhesive, wherein in the method according to the invention the adhesive is activated after the application of the catalyst material.
According to a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the physically activatable adhesive is a thermosetting adhesive, a hot melt adhesive or a wax suspension, and the adhesive is activated by a heat treatment. The heat treatment is largely independent of the form in which the catalyst material is applied to the sheet-like component, since rapid heating of a wide variety of catalyst bodies can be achieved.
According to a variant of the method according to the invention, however, the physically activatable adhesive can also be a radiation-curing adhesive, in which case the adhesive is activated by radiation treatment, for example by UV irradiation. Depending on the type of electromagnetic radiation used for activation, a more or less large penetration depth into the catalyst material can be achieved. For example, it is preferable to use a UV-curing adhesive in a very thin, flat application of the catalyst material.
The transitions between the two variants mentioned above are however fluid. For example, the above-mentioned heat treatment for activating a thermosetting adhesive may include the case of irradiating with microwave radiation which is either absorbed by the adhesive itself or other components of the catalyst material and converted into heat.
The catalyst material containing an activatable adhesive according to the invention can be present in any form, as it is also used in the prior art for the production of current collectors, reforming units and the like, of fuel cells, in particular molten carbonate fuel cells, that is, for example, as a material for producing a catalyst coating or as prefabricated pellets. However, the catalyst material particularly preferably comprises an aqueous suspension of a catalyst powder. Such an aqueous suspension can be applied in a particularly simple manner to the planar component, for example by extrusion in the form of long strands, short pellets in a wide variety of forms or as material extruded over a wide area onto the planar component.
When a catalyst material is used which is present as an aqueous suspension of a catalyst powder, the catalyst material after application to the planar component is usually at a temperature of 50-160 ° C. During a period of typically 1 to 10 minutes, according to a preferred embodiment of the process of the invention using a thermosetting adhesive, the heat treatment for activating the adhesive in the catalyst material applied to the surface of the sheet may also be used to dry the catalyst material. In this variant of the method according to the invention drying of the catalyst material and activation of the adhesive take place in one step, so that a particularly simple and cost-effective production of the loaded with catalyst sheet-like component is possible. For this purpose, an adhesive is used which can be activated in the stated temperature range of 50 to 160 ° C, preferably an adhesive which can be activated in a temperature range of 130-160 ° C.
If a radiation-curing adhesive is used in an aqueous suspension of a catalyst powder, the heat treatment for drying the catalyst material can take place before, during or after the radiation activation.
After the activation of the adhesive, there is thus a catalyst material applied to the planar component, which, on the one hand, adheres well to the planar component and, on the other hand, exhibits high stability and strength even in the dried state.
The surface of the planar component may be flat or profiled. According to a first variant of the method according to the invention, the catalyst material is applied to this surface area, according to a second variant of the method extruded catalyst from at least one nozzle and brings it in the form of long strands or in the form of short pellets on the surface of the sheet Component on.
The planar component may for example be a flow plate suitable for installation in an indirect internal reforming unit is provided. Particularly preferably, the planar component is a current collector, in particular a current collector for the anode half cell of the fuel cell.
The invention also relates to a catalyst material for application to a planar component of a fuel cell, which consists of an aqueous suspension containing 30-50 wt .-% catalyst powder, 10-30 wt .-% of a polyhydric alcohol and 0.5-5 wt. % Fibrous material, wherein the catalyst material is characterized in that the aqueous suspension further comprises 1-10% by weight of a physically activatable adhesive. The remainder of the aqueous suspension is preferably water, more preferably demineralized water.
In the burned-out state, the catalyst material has a porosity of preferably 65 to 75%. The catalyst material then has pores, of which preferably 40 to 50% by volume have a diameter of less than 0.01 μm. Less than 1% by volume, preferably less than 0.5% by volume, of the pores have a diameter of more than 5 μm. The remainder of the pores have a diameter of 0.01 to 5 μm.
The physically activatable adhesive is preferably an adhesive activatable by a heat treatment at a temperature in the range of 50-160 ° C, more preferably in the range of 130-160 ° C. According to a particularly preferred variant, the physically activatable adhesive comprises a thermosetting adhesive, a hot melt adhesive, a wax suspension or combinations thereof. The thermosetting adhesive may be, for example, an epoxy resin based adhesive. Preferably, no suspension adhesive is used, since such types of adhesives dry on contact with air, which can complicate the handling of the adhesive. In order to avoid poisoning of the catalyst material, the adhesive used should be largely free from halide and sulfur.
For the preparation of the catalyst material, for example, the melt adhesive in powder form is stirred into the aqueous suspension of the catalyst powder when using a hotmelt adhesive. When using a wax suspension, the wax suspension or the wax powder is stirred into the aqueous catalyst suspension After applying the catalyst material on the sheet-like component, the applied catalyst material is subjected to a heat treatment in an oven at a temperature of 160 ° C maximum. In the process, the hot melt adhesive or the wax melts, while the catalyst material dries. After removing the sheet from the oven, the system cools and the hot melt adhesive or the wax solidifies again. This solidification leads in the cooled state to adhesion of the dried extrudates on the sheet surface of the sheet member and to a higher stability of the extrudates.
Suitable hot melt adhesives are, for example, the commercially available hot melt adhesive VESTAMELT X1027-P1 from Evonic. A suitable thermosetting adhesive, for example, the adhesive MONOPOX 6093 Delo.
The current collectors with the dried catalyst material can then be conditioned by burning out the catalyst material so that the catalyst material is already present with the desired porosity. Usually, however, the current collectors are first assembled with the dried catalyst material into a fuel cell stack. The burning out of the catalyst material then takes place only when the fuel cell starts up. The burnout of the catalyst material serves in particular to provide a catalyst material having a sufficiently high porosity, so that a good contact of the catalyst material with the fuel gas to be reformed is ensured. In order for the desired porosity to be achieved, the adhesive contained in the catalyst material should preferably be burnable at a temperature of up to 600 ° C, more preferably up to 400 ° C, and most preferably up to 300 ° C. For example, one may choose an adhesive which is burnable at a temperature in the range of 400-600 ° C, d. H. it should be able to evaporate at this temperature substantially without leaving any disturbing or even harmful residues.
The invention also relates to a planar component, in particular a current collector, for a fuel cell having a substantially planar general shape and which is loaded on at least one surface with the catalyst material according to the invention.
Finally, the invention relates to a fuel cell stack comprising many of the above-mentioned planar components, wherein the applied catalyst material is activated and dried.
