Die erfindungsgemäße Anlage zur Durchführung dieses Verfahrens besteht im Wesentlichen aus

- b. einer Pelletier- und/oder Brikettiereinrichtung zum Formen oder Pressen des zerkleinerten Materials unter Zugabe von Flüssigkeit zu Pellets oder Briketts und
- c. einem Ofen mit wenigstens einer Vorwämer und/oder Calcinierzone, einer Sinterzone und einer Kühlzone zur Wäremebehandlung der Pellets oder Briketts. Unter der Feinheit von d90 = 50 μm ist eine Feinheit zu verstehen, bei der wenigstens 90% des Ausgangsmaterials eine Korngröße von = 50 μm aufweist.

Üblicherweise erfolgt die Sinterung von Bauxit in Drehrohröfen. Bei den der Erfindung zugrundeliegenden Versuchen hat sich jedoch gezeigt, dass sich durch den Einsatz eines Ofens, der eine Vorwämer und/oder Calcinierzone, eine Sinterzone und eine Kühlzone umfasst, wie dies beispielsweise bei einem Schachtofen der Fall ist, ein Feuerfestmaterial mit einer höheren Dichte und einer geringeren Porosität erhalten lässt. Dies ist hauptsächlich darauf zurückzuführen, dass die mechanische Beanspruchung der Pellets/Briketts in diesem Ofentyp wesentlich geringer als in einem Drehrohrofen ist. Gerade im Drehrohrofen werden die relativ empfindlichen Briketts leicht zerstört, sodass die Sinterung nicht im gewünschten Maße durchgeführt werden kann. Der Schachtofen hat gegenüber dem Drehrohrofen außerdem noch den Vorteil, dass er weniger Energie zur Herstellung benötigt. Eine zusätzliche Anlage zur Kühlung der gesinterten Pellets/Briketts wird ebenfalls eingespart.
