Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a solvent-free reactive adhesive for the fiber flocking of substrates for the purpose of dissipation of the electrostatic fiber charges and comprises a mixture which can be prepared from different free-radically reactive chemical polymeric and monomeric compounds having double bonds from a component A, B and C, where C is a thermally activatable Free radical initiator for the initiation of radical formation, and optionally adjuvants, such as inhibitors, and wherein component A is a polyester compound, and wherein component B is a polymerizable alkali metal salt.
The invention also relates to a process for the preparation and use of the solvent-free reactive adhesive, wherein the mixture is applied by doctoring or spraying onto the substrate in a thin layer into which the flock fibers are applied electrostatically in a conventional manner using an electric field, and which is cured by energy input by means of hot air or IR radiation within approximately 10 minutes at a curing temperature between 70 ° C and 130 ° C by thermal decomposition of the radical initiator.
Flocked parts have a textile-like, velvety surface and are characterized by a good sound and heat insulation Furthermore, they are easy to clean. Molded parts made of plastic or other materials, textiles or sheets may serve as substrates. To produce the parts, the substrate is first provided with a thin layer of adhesive. The adhesives used are predominantly water-based dispersion adhesives. These consist of a dispersible adhesive resin and water, the solids content is usually about 50%. The thus prepared substrate is flocked in an electric field with charged fibers. The fibers align themselves parallel to the electric field. With sufficient kinetic energy, they partially penetrate into the adhesive layer and are fixed there. Since the electrical charges on the fibers would repel subsequent fibers electrostatically, it must be ensured that the fiber charges are constantly dissipated. For molded parts, the substrate is often made of plastic and is not electrostatically dissipative. Therefore, the adhesive must be electrostatically conductive during flocking. A volume resistivity of about 10 5 -10 6 ohm cm is usually considered optimum. In the case of dispersion adhesives, this resistance is achieved casually by the high water content. The resistance can also be controlled by adding salts. The disadvantage of water-based dispersion adhesives is that the water has to be removed to harden the adhesive. This is usually achieved by drying in warm dry air. Another disadvantage is the fact that the air temperature must not be arbitrarily high, otherwise there is a loss of quality in the layer or the molded parts warp. Furthermore, it is disadvantageous that the drying process is usually carried out at about 80 ° C and the energy requirement for drying is considerable, as always cold fresh air must be fed. Adhesive application and flocking require approx. 1 minute each. The drying process takes about 20 to 40 minutes and adversely affects the logistics of the entire process. Reactive adhesives of low molecular weight acrylates, such as. As metylmethacrylate, are widely used as adhesives. For flocking these are unsuitable because the viscosity is too low and can be processed poorly. It is also disadvantageous that they are not electrostatically dissipative and do not allow high flock densities. During thermal curing, they partly enter the exhaust air and thus make exhaust air purification necessary. Reactive adhesives of unsaturated polyester resins (UP resins) and low molecular weight compounds can be formulated so that they can be processed without dilution with solvents and without water. They form the basis for some adhesives and paints. There are low molecular weight compounds are used, which are themselves polymerizable, so that they bind chemically fixed in the adhesive during curing. Since they reduce the viscosity of the adhesive during application, they are referred to as reactive diluents. The curing of the mixtures is carried out in a two-component system in which the mixture of components takes place instantaneously or relatively uncontrolled with time delay. This procedure is not suitable for flocking since flocking may only begin after flocking has ended, ie at a defined point in time. In multi-color flocking, the onset of hardening must occur even later, only after the end of flocking with the last color. Continuous cure, as occurs with multicomponent systems, is impractical in flocking because it is difficult to control. A controlled cure requires an external impulse, such as UV light. One-component systems, as are customary in the paint industry in particular, contain UV initiators and are cured in this way. This procedure is impractical in flocking because the fibers prevent exposure to light on the adhesive layer. This applies even more to black flock fibers, which form a large part of the fibers used. A major disadvantage is that these substances are not conductive due to the lack of charge carriers.
The previously used solvent-free reactive adhesives are not suitable for flocking because of the unfavorable viscosity, the uncontrolled curing, the contamination of the exhaust air and the low conductivity.
When using conductive fillers, such as carbon black or metal particles, the disadvantage is the fact that the viscosity is increased, so that the flock fibers can penetrate only insufficiently or not at all into the adhesive. In addition, it is disadvantageous that the adhesive layers are colored black in the case of the use of carbon black.
The invention has for its object to overcome the disadvantages of the prior art and to provide a solvent-free reactive adhesive for the electrostatic fiber flocking of substrates, which can be applied at room temperature, has an optimum viscosity and shows a corresponding flow behavior. Furthermore, the solvent-free reactive adhesive should have a long open time, prevent electrostatic charges during flocking and harden after external excitation within a short time without much energy.
Furthermore, a simple practical method for curing the solvent-free reactive adhesive is to be specified, which starts only after external excitation and is substantially complete within a short time with minimum energy consumption.
The object underlying the invention is achieved by a solvent-free reactive adhesive for the fiber-tufting of substrates for the purpose of dissipation of the electrostatic fiber charges with the feature combinations according to claim 1.
In this way, it is possible to use a solvent-free reactive adhesive in an electrostatic flocking process, which prevents the electrostatic charging of the fibers in the process, has an optimal viscosity and low electrical resistance, a long open time and exhibits a corresponding flow behavior.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is also achieved by a process for the preparation and use of the solvent-free reactive adhesive according to claim 10, in the form that the mixture is applied by doctoring or spraying onto the substrate in a thin layer into which the flock fibers electrostatically Conventionally, be applied using an electric field, and wherein the mixture is cured by energy input by hot air or IR radiation within approximately 10 minutes at a curing temperature between 70 ° C and 130 ° C by thermal decomposition of the radical initiator.
With the specified method, the solvent-free reactive adhesive can be cured only after external excitation thermally within a very short time and without much energy.

In a particularly advantageous embodiment, for the solvation of the alkali metal ions, the oligo- or polyglycol units of the polyester of component A and the mono- or oligo- or polyglycol unit of the unsaturated polyester of component B is a polyethylene glycol unit (PEG unit) or a Polypropylene glycol unit (PPG unit), preferably a PEG unit, and wherein the aliphatic polyester diol entity of the polyester of component A is a common polyester of adipic or sebacic or succinic units and ethylene glycol or propylene glycol or butylene glycol or Hexamethylene glycol units is.

According to one proposal of the invention, the alkali ion is a Na or Li or K ion or an ammonium ion, preferably a Na ion, which serves as a charge carrier and enables effective charge transport for discharging the Flockfaserladungen.
Another proposal of the invention is that the radical initiator C is a peroxide or an aliphatic azo compound is used, and wherein the peroxide is a BPO or a DCP or a DLP, and wherein the content of the peroxide in the mixture between 0.1 and 10 Ma%, preferably between 1 and 5 Ma%, and wherein the radical formation takes place thermally at temperatures between 70 ° C and 130 ° C, preferably between 80 ° C and 100 ° C and in a time less than 10 min.
The invention further proposes that to the component A, B and C, a component D and / or E is added, and that the component D is a reactive diluent, and that the reactive diluent contains at least one polymerizable double bond, and that the reactive diluent on the Base of (meth) acrylic acid esters or styrene or vinyl ethers is formed, and that the alcohol moiety of the methacrylic acid ester and vinyl ether is a mono- or Oligoethylenglycol with 1 to 5 ethylene glycol units or an aliphatic alcohol, preferably ethanol or propanol or butanol, and that the component E a unsaturated polyester resin (UP resin).
In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, a hydroquinone can be used as inhibitor, whereby hardening of the mixture during storage is prevented and thus a long shelf life and open time is ensured.
It has been found that the solvent-free reactive adhesive is sufficiently electrostatically dissipative if it contains charge carriers, which make it possible to prevent the electrostatic charging of the fibers during flocking. Further, it has been found that the alkali sulfonate or alkali carboxylate group is firmly bound in the adhesive after curing when the group is bonded to a molecule containing a polymerizable double bond. Furthermore, it has been found that the mixture can be applied in a small layer thickness to a substrate due to its consistency, in which the flock fibers can be incorporated with high pullout strength, and that the substrate to be flocked remains unchanged in color. Since only a small layer has to be heated to the curing temperature for curing, a considerable amount of energy can be saved. After reaching the curing temperature, the reaction continues spontaneously and even gives off heat of reaction. The energy requirement for curing is comparatively only a fraction of the demand for dispersion adhesives. Only curing times of a few minutes are needed. Since the hardening can be clocked into the process chain and no need for separate drying equipment, the logistics of the flocking process are simplified enormously. In one specific embodiment, the reactive adhesive contains a stabilizer that allows for long shelf life of the mixture by preventing cure on storage and ensuring a long open time.
The invention will be described in more detail by means of exemplary embodiments: The solvent-free reactive adhesive for the fiber-tufting of substrates for the purpose of dissipating the fiber charges consists of a mixture which is prepared from different radically reacting chemical polymeric and monomeric compounds having double bonds selected from a component A, B and C, or from a component A. Furthermore, the units of component A can be combined with the units of component B to form a macrocompound. Component A is a polyester compound or a polyester which serves as a charge carrier and is composed, for example, of a mixture of maleic acid units and alkali metal sulfosuccinic acid units and has at least one maleic acid unit per polyester molecule. Further, the polyester is composed of a mixture of a polyethylene glycol unit (PEG unit) and an aliphatic polyester diol unit having a PEG content of at least 10 mass%. Component B is a polymerizable alkali salt, for example, an alkali vinyl sulfonate or alkali (meth) acrylate, and serves as a carrier of alkali ions, and component C is a radical initiator of a peroxide, for example, BPO. Component D is a reactive diluent, for example, a (methyl) acrylic acid ester having a polymerizable double bond, the alcohol unit of which consists of an oligoethylene glycol having 1 to 5 ethylene glycol units, and the component E is an unsaturated polyester resin (UP resin). In order to prevent premature curing of the mixture during storage, an inhibitor such as hydroquinone can be used, whereby a sufficient shelf life and a long open time is ensured. The mixture is applied at room temperature by spraying onto a substrate with a layer thickness of about 0.1 mm and the flocked substrate placed in a heating oven with a temperature of about 100 ° C and heated for about 1 minute.
