Description
The invention relates to a process for the electrolytic copper plating of zinc die-cast parts with a reduced tendency to form bubbles.
Die Abscheidung von Kupfer auf Zinkgegenständen bzw. Zindruckgussteilen ist dem Fachmann hinlänglich bekann (Lit 4).The deposition of copper on zinc articles or Zintgussteilen is well known in the art (Lit 4).
The first step in the copper plating of zinc die castings is in the prior art (Lit 1, 2, 3) the deposition of copper from an alkaline cyanide electrolyte. Thereafter, usually a so-called bright copper layer of an acidic electrolyte or a nickel or bronze layer is deposited.
A particular difficulty in the coating of die-cast zinc is the structure of the base material formed during injection molding. The casting is coarsely crystalline inside and interspersed with cavities. Only a thin outer layer is dense and non-porous. In injection molding, this outer layer is created by the rapid cooling of the melt on the walls of the casting mold. Only this outer casting skin can be electrolytically coated according to the state of the art. However, the casting skin is very sensitive and is sometimes chemically dissolved and damaged during the pretreatment by degreasing and pickling, so that in part the pores of the base material are exposed. Even the coating baths themselves can damage the casting skin.
On the damaged surface no adhesive coating can be applied. In addition, blistering often occurs because the pretreatment baths or the electrolyte penetrate through the damaged casting skin into the pores of the base material. In a later heat treatment, the liquid infiltrated and evaporates the applied coating to the outside to form bubbles or bulges. In unfavorable cases, the copper layer spalls.
Further disadvantages of the processes described in the prior art are the use of highly toxic electrolytes. For safety and environmental reasons, therefore, an alternative electrolyte composition seems advisable.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method for the electrolytic copper plating of parts made of die-cast zinc, with which the described disadvantages of the prior art can be largely avoided.
- a) depositing a first copper layer of less than 1 μm thickness from a pyrophosphate-containing copper electrolyte,
- b) rinsing and drying the parts at 100 ° C to 180 ° C and
- c) reinforcing the first copper layer in a pyrophosphate-containing copper electrolyte to a layer thickness between 10 to 20 microns.
Diese Schicht sollte daher nicht dicker als 1 μm sein, bevorzugt weist sie eine Dicke zwischen 0,1 und 0,5 μm auf, insbesondere zwischen 0,2 und 0,3 μm.From a pyrophosphate-containing copper electrolyte according to the invention, first a thin copper layer of less than 1 micron thickness is deposited on the cast skin of the zinc die castings. In this first coating step or even during the pretreatment by degreasing and pickling the casting skin is usually damaged. As a result, the electrolyte can penetrate into the now open porous structure of the die-cast zinc during the pretreatment or during the coating. It is therefore of great importance for the process that the copper layer applied in the first coating step still has sufficient porosity to allow the vaporized carrier liquid of the electrolyte to escape during the subsequent temperature treatment. This layer should therefore not be thicker than 1 .mu.m, preferably it has a thickness of between 0.1 and 0.5 .mu.m, in particular between 0.2 and 0.3 .mu.m.
After the first coating step, the parts are rinsed and heated at a temperature of 100 to 180 ° C, preferably 120 ° C to 160 ° C and more preferably at about 140 ° C for a sufficient duration, e.g. B. from 10 to 60 minutes, stored for drying. In this temperature treatment also evaporates the carrier liquid of the electrolyte, which has penetrated into the porous zinc. The already existing copper layer from the first coating step is still porous due to its low layer thickness and not dense against the forming vapor, so that the vapor formed during heating can escape. From the electrolyte, therefore, only the solid components (salts) remain in the pores, which do not interfere further. The whereabouts of the electrolyte salts may, for. B. be detected using REM and / or EDX studies.
The rinsing is preferably carried out with water and is familiar to the person skilled in the art.
After the coated and dried parts are cooled from die-cast zinc, the coating is optionally continued in the same pyrophosphate electrolyte until about 5 to 50 microns, preferably 10 to 30 microns, more preferably 10 to 20 microns of copper deposited. The beginning The thin layer of copper already present in the second coating step obviously prevents the penetration of liquid electrolyte into the porous zinc base material. The parts thus coated consist of a storage lasting about 30 minutes at 150 ° C. without blistering or even spalling.
(Größenordnung 5–100 A/dm2)
- 1. Drum coating for bulk material and mass parts: In this coating method, rather low working current densities are used (order of magnitude 0.05-0.5 A / dm 2 )
- 2. Frame coating for single parts: In this coating method average working current densities are used (order of magnitude: 0.2-5 A / dm 2 )
- 3. High-speed coating for belts and wires in continuous flow systems: In this coating area, very high operating current densities are used. (Order of magnitude 5-100 A / dm 2 )
For copper coatings, the first two coating methods (drum and frame) are more important, with either drum coating (low current densities) or frame coating (average current densities) possible, depending on the different types of electrolyte.
The application of the copper layer on the zinc die casting is carried out in both process steps a) and c) as mentioned advantageously by means of a galvanic process. It is important that the metal to be deposited is kept permanently in solution during the process, regardless of whether the galvanic coating takes place in a continuous or in a discontinuous process. In order to ensure this, the electrolyte according to the invention contains pyrophosphate as complexing agent.
In the electrolyte used, the copper to be deposited is dissolved in the form of its ions. They are preferably introduced in the form of water-soluble salts, which are preferably selected from the group of pyrophosphates, carbonates, hydroxide carbonates, bicarbonates, sulfites, sulfates, phosphates, nitrites, nitrates, halides, hydroxides, oxide hydroxides, oxides or combinations thereof. Very particular preference is given to the embodiment in which the copper is used in the form of the salts with ions, optionally from the group consisting of pyrophosphate, carbonate, hydroxide carbonate, oxide hydroxide, hydroxide and bicarbonate. Which salts in which amount are introduced into the electrolyte, can be decisive for the color of the resulting layers and can be adjusted according to customer requirements. The ion concentration of the copper can be adjusted in the range of 5 to 100 g / L, preferably 10 to 50 g / L of the electrolyte. Particularly preferably, the resulting ion concentration is in the range of 15 to 30 g / L electrolyte. Approximately 15 to 20 grams of copper per liter of electrolyte are used with particular preference, the introduction of the copper into the electrolyte being carried out as pyrophosphate, carbonate or hydroxide carbonate salt.
The pH of the electrolytes is in the range of 6 and 13 required for the electroplating application. A range of 6-12 and most preferably of 6-10 is preferred. Most preferably, one works at a pH of about 7.9 to 8.1.
The electrolyte according to the invention is characterized by the fact that it is free of hazardous substances classified as toxic (T) or very toxic (T + ). There are no cyanides, no thiourea derivatives and no thiol derivatives.
The deposits of the copper layers may be operated at a temperature which the skilled artisan will choose based on his general skill. Preferably, a range of 20 to 60 ° C in question, in which the electrolytic bath is heated during the electrolysis. More preferably, a range of 30-50 ° C is selected. Most preferably, one works at a temperature of about 40 °.
The deposits of the copper in steps a) and c) can be carried out in electrochemical cells which are well known to the person skilled in the art (Lit 1). When using the non-toxic electrolyte, various anodes can be used. Soluble or insoluble anodes are also suitable, as is the combination of soluble and insoluble anodes.
As soluble anodes, those made of a material selected from the group consisting of electrolytic copper, phosphorus-containing copper or copper alloy are preferably used. Preferred insoluble anodes are those made of a material selected from the group consisting of platinized titanium, graphite, iridium-transition metal mixed oxide and special carbon material ("Diamond Like Carbon" DLC) or combinations of these anodes. Mixed oxide anodes of iridium-ruthenium mixed oxide, iridium-ruthenium-titanium mixed oxide or iridium-tantalum mixed oxide are particularly preferably used. Others can be found in Cobley, A.J. et al. (The use of insoluble anodes in Acid Sulphate Copper Electrodeposition Solutions, Trans. IMF, 2001, 79 (3), pp. 113 and 114).
If insoluble anodes are used, this is a particularly preferred embodiment of the method if the substrates to be provided with the copper layer, which are the cathode, are separated from the insoluble anode by an ion exchange membrane in such a way that a cathode space and form an anode space. In such a case, only the cathode compartment is filled with the non-toxic electrolyte. In the anode compartment is preferably an aqueous solution containing only a conductive salt such. As potassium pyrophosphate, potassium carbonate, potassium hydroxide, potassium bicarbonate or mixture thereof. As ion exchange membranes cationic or anionic exchange membranes can be used. Preferably, Nafion membranes having a thickness of 50 to 200 μm are used.
By the method according to the invention and in particular by the temperature treatment between the two coating steps, the carrier liquid of the electrolyte used can thus be removed to such an extent that it does not lead to blistering or chipping on later heating of the parts. If, on the other hand, the copper layer of an eg pyrophosphate-containing electrolyte without the inventive temperature treatment of step b) is applied to the zinc, the liquid entering the porous base material can no longer escape during a subsequent heating of the coated parts and leads to the formation of vapor pressure Blistering or flaking in the coating. This was not to be expected against the background of the prior art.
