Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a process for the continuous production of pearlescent dispersions, in particular pearlescent concentrates which can be cold worked.
To improve the visual appearance of surfactant compositions, for example, liquid detergents and cleaners (ie floor cleaners, dishwashing or similar products) or liquid personal cleansers and personal care products, as well as hair treatment products (ie shampoos, bath salts, liquid soaps, shower gels or similar products), these become common aqueous pearlescent dispersions (pearlescent concentrates) added, whereby the surfactant compositions is given a pearlescent and thus aesthetically pleasing appearance.
The preparation of the aqueous, flowable pearlescent concentrates is now carried out batchwise in conventional stirred reactors. The individual components (dispersants, pearlescing agents, additives) are combined either individually or together in a reactor, kept or stirred 5-20 ° C above the melting temperature of the highest melting component. Then allowed to cool first without cooling with stirring to 35-40 ° C and then cooled with cooling and stirring to room temperature (about 20-25 ° C), which means a considerable expenditure of time and energy.

US 6,727,217 B1 - 4.)
WO 2004/082817 A1
- 1.) Long production times, as the batches partly have to cool from 70-90 ° C to 30-40 ° C without active cooling (as in
EP 0 568 848 A1 - 2.) Long production times, since the individual premixes must be heated to the required temperature, mixed and then cooled again
- 3.) In order to avoid the introduction of air into the product - this is especially true for the homogenization during the production in
US 6,727,217 B1 - 4.) Only by an absolutely precise production management the quality of the pearlescent concentrate can be kept reasonably constant. However, this is only recognizable at the end of the production process, since there is no in-process control
- 5.) The final viscosity of the pearlescent concentrate can be subject to large batch-to-batch variations, since the pearlescing component can not crystallize in a controlled manner; in particular, since no information is given about mixing times, cooling performance or duration. It should be noted here that crystallization processes are generally chaotic in nature, ie that crystallization certainly takes place but no time frame can be set for it. Because of this, the particle size distribution - and hence the viscosity - in the pearlescent concentrates varies dramatically
- 6.) By the strongly different particle size distribution of pearlescent particles described in 5.) also an increase in viscosity during storage - especially at elevated temperature (45 ° C) - found so that many processors of such pearlescent concentrates a viscosity stability at 45 ° C over a longer period (depending on the user up to 60 days) demand this from the manufacturer
- 7.) The very different particle size distribution of pearlescent particles described in 5.) also significantly influences the pearlescent effect

The object of the invention is to provide a continuous process for the preparation of pearlescent dispersions of different composition, with precise control of the process parameters such as temperature control, mixing time, duration, energy, flow profile.
This object is achieved by a low-energy and gentle product process for the continuous production of emulsions and dispersions and highly efficient pearlescent dispersions of pearlescing agents, dispersants and optionally polyols and / or Fettsäurealkanolamiden by specific combination of stirring and cooling stages.
- a) At least two streams of at least two phases of the pearlescent flowable and / or flowable by preheating are metered continuously via heated pipes into a first closed mixing vessel (first stirring step) and into a mixing vessel with stirring at 55 ° C. to 90 ° C. The stirring entry takes place without generation of cavitation forces and without high-pressure homogenization.
- b) The premix is continuously discharged from the mixing vessel, introduced into a cooling stage and thus cooled to a temperature which is below the crystallization temperature of the pearlescing agent, so that the pearlescing agent crystallizes in the form of a liquid crystalline lamellar structure.
- c) The premix is continuously added to another closed mixing vessel (second agitator), with further streams, eg. As water and additives, can be supplied, and stirred, so that the resulting pearlescent dispersion is mixed intensively.
Due to the continuous processing of the components, the process according to the invention can dispense with large volumes in the stirring stages or the cooling stage and thereby optimally utilizes the ability of the dispersants used (also called emulsifiers). The use of large stirring energy and high-pressure homogenization can therefore advantageously be dispensed with.
Not only can the quality of the pearlescent concentrates, which have been produced by conventional techniques, be achieved by the method according to the invention, but they can even be bettered by the exact control of the process parameters with regard to constancy (batch-to-batch variations).
Advantageously, the process costs are also significantly reduced by the inventive method, as heating and cooling times and the stirring time (mixing time) can be dramatically shortened without sacrificing quality in the products to accept. This is of particular interest in times of rising energy costs as well as the savings of other resources such as water.
In step a), the different components of the pearlescent dispersion, such as pearlescing agents, dispersants, polyols and / or fatty acid alkanolamides and optionally water, are introduced separately via suitable pumps via heatable pipelines into the first stirring stage and at 55 ° C. to 90 ° C., preferably 70 ° C. to 80 ° C, mixed there. To achieve a homogeneous melt of the starting components and to achieve a homogeneous mixture, the temperature is increased in the first stirring step in non-flowable components to a temperature of 5-20 ° C above the melting point of the highest melting component.
In the context of the invention, "phase" is understood to mean a pure substance or a substance mixture which is metered separately as a flowable stream via a pump into the mixing vessel. Preferably, a phase is a pure substance. Optionally, however, it may be desirable for reasons of process economy to mix certain components of the pearlescent dispersion before the process of the invention, for example, to heat the respective components together. This substance mixture then forms one of the phases which is metered into the mixing vessel in step a).
Suitable pearlescers are alkylene glycol esters, alkyl polyglycol ethers, partial glycerides, esters of polybasic, optionally hydroxy-substituted carboxylic acids with fatty alcohols having 6 to 22 carbon atoms, fatty alcohols, fatty ketones, fatty aldehydes, fatty ethers and / or fatty carbonates having up to 24 carbon atoms and fatty acids and hydroxyfatty acids with 16 to 30 carbon atoms.

Suitable polyols contain a carbon skeleton of 2 to 5 C atoms and at least two hydroxyl groups. Preference is given to glycerol, alkylene glycols, sugar alcohols and polyalkylene glycols.
R6 = H, ein Alkylrest mit 1 bis 4 C-Atomen,
R7 = H, ein Alkylrest mit 1 bis 4 C-Atomen,
R8 = H, Methyl, Ethyl, n-Propyl, i-Propyl, n-Butyl, i-Butyl oder t-Butyl ist.Suitable fatty acid alkanolamides are constructed according to the general formula (II) where R 1 is an alkyl radical having 8 to 22 C atoms,
R 6 = H, an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 C atoms,
R 7 = H, an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 C atoms,
R 8 = H, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, i-propyl, n-butyl, i-butyl or t-butyl.
If at room temperature flowable, pumpable components with other components that are solid at room temperature and therefore are to be heated to 5 ° C to 20 ° C above its melting point, are mixed, these flowable components to 5 ° C to 20 ° C above the Melting point of preheated at the highest melting component. In this case, the preheating takes place, for example, in a suitable boiler or via a heatable pipe during the feeding into the first stirring stage.
The supply of the individual components in the first stirring step is optionally carried out separately or together and can be carried out parallel to or angularly inclined, as well as the discharge of the mixture from the first stirring stage in the following cooling stage. It is also conceivable that the individual components are premixed in a suitable combination in a boiler and then fed to the first stirring stage. In this case, the premix can be actively prepared with a stirrer or over known in the art passive mixers such. B. so-called "static mixer" or so-called "mixing nozzles" during the pumping operation. The stirring entry takes place without generation of turbulent flows, without high-pressure homogenization and without the use of rotor-stator homogenizers. The process according to the invention is preferably carried out at atmospheric pressure or at pressures of up to 10 bar, preferably up to 5 bar.
After a mixing time of 1 to 400 seconds, preferably 1 to 60 seconds, more preferably 5 to 25 seconds in the first stirring step, the premixed mass is cooled in step b) via a cooling stage to a temperature below the crystallization temperature of the pearlescent component is that the pearlescing component crystallizes in the form of a liquid-crystalline lamellar structure and adjusts the pearlescent effect. This temperature is preferably below 55 ° C., more preferably below 45 ° C.
In this case, the cooling stage may be constructed on different types such as plate, tube, double tube, Rippenröhren-, tube bundle heat exchangers and other, known in the art forms of heat exchangers. Furthermore, the design of the heat exchanger can also be chosen so that its waste heat heats the currents of the individual components to be supplied. Also, a closed cooling circuit is possible, which has a significant saving of cooling water result.
In step c), the cooled mixture is then stirred in a second stirring step following the cooling step, wherein the temperature in the stirring step by reducing the stirring power and / or cooling the agitator less than 45 ° C to 55 ° C, preferably less than 45 ° C. is held. Possibly. is diluted in the second stirring step with the remaining amount of water, unless there is no further dilution necessary because z. B. the pearlescent concentrate is low enough viscous or the total amount of water has already been added to the first stirring step.
If appropriate additives are to be added to the pearlescent concentrate, they can be introduced into the first or the second stirring stage or else into the cooling stage. Such useful components may be preservatives such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride and / or magnesium chloride or formic acid or else buffering agents and the like.
Compared to the conventional batch production of pearlescent concentrates, which are carried out in very large stirred reactors, which require high current consumption due to their dimensions alone, the process according to the invention advantageously allows the use of very small agitation chambers, which only require a low energy consumption to pull oneself.
This is not exactly to quantify, however, one can estimate this to several tens to hundreds of potencies, since the diameter of the mixing vessel in the fifth power is included in the calculation of the current consumption of the stirring tool. If the diameter of a device suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention is compared with the diameter of a typical stirred reactor of 2 meters with a comparable production output and a diameter of 0.5 meter, the theoretical power consumption in the method according to the invention drops to 1 when using the same stirring elements / 1000th
Advantageously, further z. T. considerable energy savings achieved that are considerably shortened by a very fast cooling in the heat exchanger, the stirring times. Since the cooling of the hot pearlescent concentrate in the continuous process according to the invention is much more effective than in the conventional method of preparation in a large stirred reactor, a great savings potential of energy (and thus natural resources) and time is ensured here.
Since the implementation of the method according to the invention for the preparation of the pearlescent concentrates in devices is possible, which are dimensioned substantially smaller and have no dead space as conventional stirred reactors, as they are used in batch process, and since all components in liquid state (ie, free of air) can be dispensed with the use of an additional vacuum system, which not only reduces production costs, but also protects the natural resources.
- • flowability (viscosity); In this case, not only much smaller fluctuations are observed in comparison with the conventional methods, but surprisingly also a significantly lower viscosity (in some cases 50% lower) with the same composition of pearlescent concentrates.
- Crystallization behavior of the pearlescing component; Here, in contrast to conventionally prepared pearlescent concentrates, no irregularities are visible
- • pearlescent properties; Here, too, a much more uniform pearl effect becomes visible due to less fluctuation in the particle size distribution of the pearlescent particles
- Batch-to-batch variation of these properties, which are due to the always constant process parameters during the production of pearlescent concentrates in the device according to the invention.
The invention will be explained in more detail by the following embodiment, without being limited to this.
Ausführungsbeispiel 1: Herstellung einer PerlglanzdispersionExemplary Embodiment 1 Production of a Pearlescent Dispersion
The resulting pearlescent concentrates have excellent pearlescent properties and good processability.
Die angegebenen Prozentangaben sind Gewichtsprozent. The percentages given are percent by weight.
