Description
GEBIET DER ERFINDUNGFIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to an electronic device and a method for driving a light-emitting device, such as a laser diode.
HINTERGRUNDBACKGROUND
There is a general need for electronic devices and methods for driving laser diodes in high data rate transmission systems. For these and other applications using semiconductor light emitting devices, current driver circuits are needed that can operate at a low voltage margin while still achieving high drive performance in terms of edge speed and jitter.
VCSEL-(engl. Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) diodes are commonly used in semiconductor light emitting devices. The circular beam of a VCSEL can be easily coupled to a fiber. This is mainly due to the feature of the VCSEL diodes to represent surface emission rather than edge emission devices, and they are known for their outstanding energy efficiency and durability. Accordingly, VCSEL diodes are commonly used in low-cost optical transmission systems. However, in high data rate transmission systems, the VCSEL diodes are turned on and off at very high switching frequencies. This requires fast, energy efficient and accurate driver stages.
In addition, the forward voltage of laser diodes is dependent on the wavelength of the emitted light. It is well known in the art that GaAs is needed as the substrate for 850 nm laser diodes. The corresponding bandgap energy is about 1.5 eV. Other diodes, such as 1310 nm or 1550 nm laser diodes, require InP as a substrate. In these devices, the bandgap energy is about 1 eV and 0.8 eV, respectively. The forward voltage of a laser diode at a temperature of zero Kelvin corresponds to the bandgap energy divided by the elementary charge e. Thus, the forward voltage value is about 1.5 V at 850 nm, about 1.0 V at 1310 nm, and about 0.8 V at 1550 nm. At higher temperatures, the forward voltage also becomes a function of the doping profile of a diode. Depending on the amount of current flowing through the laser diode and its internal resistance, the voltage drop can reach values of up to 2.1V, e.g. In VCSEL laser diodes emitting light at a wavelength of 850 nm. Since a minimum supply voltage of 2.9 V is used in many systems, the remaining reserve for the laser diode current driver stage may be 0.8 V or even less.

KURZZUSAMMENFASSUNGSUMMARY
An object of the invention is to provide an electronic device and a method for driving a semiconductor light-emitting device having a high edge velocity, a low jitter and / or a larger voltage reserve as devices and methods of the prior art.
The object is achieved with a device and a method according to
In one aspect of the invention, an electronic device for driving a semiconductor light-emitting device is provided. The electronic device may include an input stage for receiving a driver input signal and an output stage. The output stage is coupled to the input stage. The output stage may include a first differential pair configured to be coupled to the light emitting semiconductor device with a first side. The first differential pair may be further configured to control an output current through the semiconductor light-emitting device in response to the driver input signal. The output stage can provide a reference signal. The reference signal may be such that it is used in a control loop to control a voltage level of the input stage. The reference signal may be advantageously used to control a common mode voltage level of the input stage to control the output current. A change in the voltage level (eg, the common mode voltage level) of the input stage (ie, a voltage level related to the output voltage of the input stage) may advantageously result in a corresponding change in the common mode voltage level at the input stage input, which will then provide a characteristic (e.g. an amount or average) of the output current. This aspect of the invention ensures that a control loop which is used to control a characteristic value (eg, an amount, a ratio, and / or an average value) of the current that is input to the semiconductor light-emitting device. Thus, the first differential pair in the output stage does not require a current source to determine the output current. The differential pair in the output stage may then be coupled to ground or to a negative supply voltage level via a component that results in a lower voltage drop than a current source. This can increase the voltage margin for the semiconductor device and the edge speed and reduce the jitter.
The input stage may include a differential pair that can receive the driver input signal. Advantageously, the differential pair may be supplied with the common mode voltage level which is controlled in response to the reference signal. This aspect of the invention provides an efficient method for implementing a control loop for controlling a characteristic of the output current.
The input stage and the output stage can then be coupled via a level shifter. The level shifter may shift and convert the output signal from the input stage and provide a level shifted and converted output signal for the output stage. A common mode level of the output signal of the input stage may then be controlled in response to the reference signal from the output stage. This change in the common-mode voltage level can be advantageously maintained as the signal propagates through the level shifter.
In addition, the output stage may include a second differential pair coupled to operate in accordance with the first differential pair and provide the reference signal. The second differential pair may be coupled to receive the same input signals as the first differential pair. In a bipolar semiconductor technique, the first and second differential pairs may comprise bipolar transistor pairs. The emitters of the transistors of the first and second differential pair may then all be coupled together. The emitters of the transistors of the first and second differential pair may then be coupled to ground (ground is also referred to as the negative supply voltage level and vice versa). The collector of a transistor of the first differential pair may be coupled to the semiconductor light-emitting device. The collectors of the transistors of the second differential pair may be coupled together. The combined collector currents of the second differential pair can then be used as a reference signal.
The reference signal may indicate an amount of the output current. The reference signal may be combined with a configuration signal to provide a general setting for the common mode voltage level of the input stage. The configuration signal may then serve as the reference signal for the control loop to control the common mode voltage level.
The electronic device may further include a voltage follower. The voltage follower may be coupled to an input to the semiconductor light-emitting device. That is, the voltage follower may be coupled to the node to which the semiconductor light-emitting device is coupled. This may be the collector of a transistor of the first differential pair. The voltage follower may be coupled to a second side (i.e., to the collector of the second transistor of the first differential pair, for example) of the first differential pair. The voltage follower may then establish the same voltage level on the second side of the first differential pair as on the first side (i.e., the collectors of both transistors are biased to the same collector voltages). This represents a second control loop which serves to avoid the current source in the driver stage and improves the accuracy of the driver.
The differential pair of the input stage may advantageously comprise transistor loads. In a bipolar semiconductor technique, a bipolar transistor may be coupled to the collectors of the transistors of the differential pair of the input stage. The use of transistors instead of resistors pre-emphasizes the output signals of the input stage which are fed to the output stage. In addition, degeneration resistors may be coupled to the emitters of the transistors of the differential pair of the input stage. This ensures that the output current becomes a linear function of the input voltage applied to the input stage.
The first differential pair of the output stage may be coupled directly to ground (or to the negative supply voltage level). However, in another embodiment, the first differential pair may be coupled to ground or to a negative supply voltage level via an inductance. An inductance may be coupled between the emitters of the first differential pair and the ground / negative supply voltage level. An inductor provides a high impedance for high frequencies, which despite high frequency noise at the output stage to a constant current leads. This can serve to reduce the jitter.
In one aspect of the invention, the second differential pair of the output stage may be sized such that a current through the second differential pair is much less than the current through the first differential pair. In a bipolar technique, the emitter regions of the transistors of the second differential pair may be n times smaller than the emitter regions of the transistors of the first differential pair, where n is a positive integer value.
The invention also provides a method of driving a semiconductor light-emitting device. A driver input voltage is input to an input stage, and an output current through the semiconductor light emitting device is controlled in response to the driver input signal. The output current is further controlled by adjusting a voltage level (eg, a common-mode voltage level) of the input stage. This is advantageously done in a closed-loop configuration with a reference signal from the output stage.

AUSFÜHRLICHE BESCHREIBUNG EINER BEISPIELHAFTEN AUSFÜHRUNGSFORMDETAILED DESCRIPTION OF AN EXEMPLARY EMBODIMENT
A collector of the transistor Q6 of the first differential pair is coupled to the load LD with a collector. The load LD is coupled between the supply voltage level VSUP and the collector of Q6. This causes current to flow through the channel (collector to emitter) of Q6 as output current IOUT through the load. The output current IOUT leads to a voltage VDROP at the load LD. The output current IOUT for driving a semiconductor light-emitting device as a load is thus switched in response to the voltages VIN3 and VIN2, which means that the output current is switched in response to the input voltage VIN1. However, the magnitude of the current IOUT is also a result of the levels of the base voltages VB5 and VB6 at the bases of the first differential pair. These voltages are controlled via a control loop.
The control loop has a differential pair of transistors Q7 and Q8. These transistors of the second differential pair receive the same base voltages VB5 and VB6 at their bases as the transistors Q5 and Q6 of the first differential pair. This means that the second differential pair is matched (i.e., similar or synchronous to) to the first differential pair Q5, Q6. The emitters of transistors Q5, Q6, Q7 and Q8 are all coupled together. The common emitter node is coupled to the negative supply voltage level GND.
In this embodiment, an inductor LFB is coupled between the common emitter node and the negative supply voltage level GND. The high impedance of the inductance LFB serves to stabilize the current I4.
The collectors of the second differential stage transistors Q7, Q8 are coupled together and coupled to the supply voltage level VSUP via the reference resistor REF2. The collectors are also coupled to a positive input of an operational amplifier OP1. The negative input of the operational amplifier OP1 is coupled to a further reference resistor REF1 and to the current source ISET. The output of the operational amplifier OP1 is coupled to the node VCM. The node VCM can be considered as the supply voltage node of the differential pair of the input stage. However, the voltage level at the node VCM is controlled by a reference signal IREF from the output stage. The reference signal is the collector current of the second differential pair Q7, Q8 of the output stage.
Wenn ISET verringert wird, sinkt der maximale Betrag des Stroms IOUT.Due to the control loop, the current source ISET can be used to determine the maximum amount of current IOUT. The amount of ISET determines the voltage level at the negative input of the operational amplifier OP1. Increasing the magnitude of the current ISET lowers the voltage level at the negative input node of OP1. Since operational amplifier OP1 attempts to keep its differential input voltage at 0 (ideally only), IREF must be increased. Thus, the output voltage VCM of the operational amplifier OP1 increases, and the common-mode voltage level of VIN2 and VIN3 increases. This increases the maximum amount of current IOUT (and also IREF). When ISET is reduced, the maximum amount of current I OUT decreases.
Another control loop is implemented to adjust the voltage level at the collector of transistor Q5 of the first differential pair of the output stage. Since the differential pair has no current source for determining the maximum current through differential pairs of the output stage, the voltage level at the collector of Q5 should correspond to the voltage level at the collector of the other transistor Q6 of the differential pair. Thus, a voltage follower is coupled to an operational amplifier OP2 and a MOSFET transistor M1 between the collector of the transistor Q6 and the collector of the transistor Q5. The operational amplifier OP2 receives at its positive input the voltage level at the output node OUT (i.e., the node between the load LD and the collector of Q6, which may be considered as an output node to which the load is to be coupled). The negative input of operational amplifier OP2 is coupled to the collector of Q5 and to the source of M1. The operational amplifier OP2 supplies the gate terminal of the MOSFET M1 with a control voltage, thereby ensuring that the positive and negative input nodes of OP2 have substantially the same voltage level. This means that the collector of Q5 has substantially the same voltage level as the collector of transistor Q6.
The external inductor LFB is used to replace the transistor based current source to reduce the voltage margin needed to produce the output stage output current I4. The advantage of using an inductor instead of a resistor as a substitute for the transistor-based power source is the high impedance of the inductor LFB at high frequencies. This results in a constant current I4 related to the high frequency ripple that may be present at the common emitter node VE of the transistors Q5, Q6. This improves the jitter performance of the output driver since I4 has reduced ripple.
However, the proposed circuit topology is not limited to the use of an external inductance LFB. In an alternate embodiment, the common emitter node VE may be coupled directly to the negative supply voltage line GND.
Thus, the transistor Q6 is operated out of its saturation mode (VBC6 <0.3V) and improved performance in terms of output edge speed and jitter can be ensured.
In
Moreover, the operational amplifier OP2 is used to control the collector of Q5 to have the same working voltage as the collector of Q6 to keep the transistors of the differential pair of the output driver in a balanced mode of operation.
While the average value of the output current IOUTAVG continues to be controlled by the output driver output current I4 (and thus set by ISET), the maximum and minimum output current values are determined by the fluctuation of IOUT and thus controlled by the variation of VIN1. Maintaining the input fluctuation of VIN1 at a constant value results in a constant ER that is independent of the average value IOUTAVG of the output current IOUT set by ISET.
