Description
The invention relates to an electron emitter for generating ionizing radiation, in particular electron beams or X-rays, comprising a particular evacuated housing with one of a, transparent to the electron beam, window covered beam exit window and a window for a beam exit window of an electron gun. Furthermore, the invention relates to the use of the electron gun.
Electron emitters are also known as those electric tubes that allow an electron beam generated in its interior between an anode and a cathode through a designated radiation exit window with a suitable window, the so-called Lenard window, get into the atmosphere. As a window, a preferably thin-walled cover of a window opening of an electron emitter is always referred to in the present specification, as is usual in electron beam or X-ray technology.
The electron guns are increasingly being used industrially. Fields of application are, for example, rapid polymerisation of paints and bodies made of plastics without heat supply or chemical additives, sterilization of foods and their containers as well as of medical articles and others.
A. verwendet.Since the weakening of, in particular, electron beams in materials increases with their atomic number, materials of elements of low atomic number, such as beryllium, aluminum, titanium, or the like, are preferably used for these windows.
The thickness of the window is also chosen as small as possible so that the beam attenuation in the window is lower. Nevertheless, a leak-free vacuum seal against the outside atmospheric pressure must be ensured, especially if one wants to do without a vacuum pump which is ready for use all the time. Disc thicknesses in the range of about 10 μm are customary. Because of its extremely high tensile strength, for example, predominantly titanium is used for electron beam windows. However, titanium has an atomic number of 22 after all.
On the other hand, due to the physical weakening caused by a large number of shocks in the absorption of electrons in the material of the window, an electron beam loses such a high amount of energy that these windows must generally be supported and cooled by an additional, for example, honeycomb-like structure of copper, whereby the specific Radiation power of the electron gun is limited.

Außerdem ist es in dickeren Formstücken spröde und blättrig, während es als eine dünne Folie ausgebildet äußerst flexibel wirkt.HOPG is a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite or carbon (Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite) whose scatter of C-axis orientation of the atoms is below about 1 degree. It has similar properties to a metal: it is shiny, has high tensile strength, conducts electricity and is very highly thermally conductive in the direction of orientation. In addition, it is brittle and blättrig in thicker fittings, while it acts as a thin film is extremely flexible.

The invention is based on the object of an electron emitter for generating ionizing radiation, in particular of electron beams or to improve X-rays such that the efficiency of the electron gun is increased, ie proportionately less energy is converted into heat loss. Furthermore, it is the object of the invention to increase the maximum achievable specific exit radiation power of the electron gun and thereby enable a more compact design of the electron gun.
This object is achieved by the features of

A particular advantage of the invention is that the window of the beam exit window for dissipating the heat generated by the electron beam passing through and / or impinging the window is made of a highly heat-conductive material. This allows the heat loss that occurs in the material of the window to be dissipated to the edge of the window. As a result, the heat occurring in the window can flow over the edge of the window pane and the window edge of the radiation exit window into the holder of the window. The holder of the window can preferably absorb the heat conducted to it, store and radiate to the environment and dissipate.
A further advantage of the invention results from the fact that the heat-dissipating material of the window is formed from a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG, Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite). The highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, the so-called HOPG, has a thermal conductivity better than copper by a factor of 4, but a thermal conductivity better than that of titanium by a factor of 60, which makes it possible to increase the heat loss by one to two orders of magnitude from the window of the beam exit window derive. In a comparative example, for a given aperture size of the beam exit window using conventional materials, such as titanium, this heat loss performance is approximately 10 watts, whereas using HOPG achieves a dissipated heat output on the order of several hundred watts, without the material of the window being thermal gets destroyed. Accordingly, to the same extent as the heat loss performance, the proportion of the transmitted particle radiation behaves.
It has also surprisingly been found that even thin windows of HOPG of the order of magnitude of about 10 μm thick are able to dissipate the power delivered by an electron beam into this thin layer of the window of the order of 100 W, provided the edge of the window is cooled accordingly ,
The heat-dissipating material of the window, HOPG, according to a preferred embodiment of the invention has such a spatial orientation of its structure that a heat transfer particularly good heat-conducting structure alignment with the main propagation direction of the plane of the window matches. This ensures that the resulting heat loss is particularly well directed to the edge of the window and over him to the window edge of the beam exit window. In contrast, a good heat conduction in the direction perpendicular to the main direction of propagation of the plane of the window facing direction is not required because the inside of the window surrounded by heat-insulating vacuum and the outside of the window is enveloped by an equally poor thermal conductivity atmosphere.
In order to dissipate the heat loss flowing in this way into the holder of the window even more effectively, according to a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, at least one further second heat-dissipating means is coupled to the window edge used as the first heat-dissipating means for dissipating the heat impinging on the edge of the window , In preferred embodiments of the present invention, this second heat-conducting means comprises at least one heat conductor made of copper, aluminum or another heat-conducting metal, metal alloy or a ceramic, for example made of AlN. Such heat conductors are solid and may suitably have very different shapes and profiles.
The second heat-dissipating agent may particularly preferably comprise at least one heat conductor, which is formed from the above-described highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG, Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite). Also at this point makes the same HOPG material due to its multiple better thermal conductivity particularly high heat dissipation performance.
In a further preferred embodiment of the electron emitter according to the invention, the second heat-dissipating means has at least one heat conductor, which is formed as a liquid-filled tube (heat pipe). Such liquid-filled tubes, called heat pipes, are capable of transferring heat even at very small temperature differences and over a relatively long distance, allowing the heat loss to be dissipated faster and farther away from the window.
A further advantageous development of the present invention is that the second heat-dissipating means comprises at least one heat conductor, which is formed as a Peltier element. A Peltier element provides by means of an electrically generated cooling a larger temperature difference between the window to be cooled and the ultimately heat-dissipating agent. As a result, the heat dissipation performance can be further increased.
At least one of the first and the second heat-dissipating means is in the form of at least one channel, through which a coolant flows, according to a further preferred embodiment of the invention. This channel is inventively provided in particular near the edge of the window, whereby the heat of the incoming from the edge of the window at the edge of the window can be accommodated by a flowing coolant such as water, air, gas o. Ä. The edge of the window can also be provided on its outside with cooling fins for cooling with an air flow, be it by natural convection or by means of a fan.
A particular advantage for an effective heat dissipation is achieved when the window with the window edge of the radiation exit window in an embodiment according to the invention are vacuum-tight and heat-conductive joined together. Depending on the requirements of an application, the thickness of the window according to the invention is between 1 and 100 μm. In particularly preferred embodiments and applications of the present invention, the thickness of the window is between 1 and 30 microns, and more preferably between 1 and 15 microns. In particular, a thickness of the window in the range of 10 microns meets the stated objects of the invention. At this thickness, the HOPG material of the window preferably used in the invention has a very good electron transmission, high heat dissipation performance, and sufficiently high mechanical strength required by the pressure difference between the external atmosphere and the internal vacuum.
An advantageous development of the electron emitter according to the invention results when in the beam path of the electron beam outside the housing of the electron emitter, an X-ray target, such as a tungsten plate, is arranged, wherein the X-ray target generates an X-radiation by the incident on it electron radiation. The X-ray generated in this way can be used for direct irradiation of objects, whereby the radiation of the secondarily generated X-rays is directly into the atmosphere without any window and consequently the supply of the objects to be irradiated can be made particularly simple and inexpensive. The wavelength of the X-rays thus generated depends on the kinetic energy of the electrons forming the electron beam and thus can be set relatively easily via them.
A particularly advantageous application of the present invention can be achieved in that at the electron emitter another evacuated or gas-filled part housing or additional housing is arranged such that the exiting through the window from the electron beam electron beam enters this sub-housing.
This additional housing, or sub-housing, forms an X-ray attachment by an X-ray target is disposed in this additional housing in the beam path of the electron beam, which generates an X-radiation by the incident on him electron beam radiation. In contrast to the previous embodiment, this allows to generate the X-radiation in an evacuated or filled with a desired gas space without affecting the vacuum of the actual electron gun.
These preferred arrangements according to the invention enable a particularly economical modular design of electron emitters and X-ray emitters. The most favorable thereby so-called soft X-rays, d. H. X-rays generated at the long-wavelength region edge of the X-rays. In contrast to hard x-ray radiation, which passes very well through materials, this soft x-ray radiation is effectively weakened to a great extent already by air or thin material of a window. In both embodiments of the present invention described above, the soft X-rays do not pass through any window and can be directly applied to an application.
According to the invention, the edge of the window is joined to the window edge of the beam exit window by means of a material-melting connection, such as brazing or diffusion welding or by gluing. Here, the joint is inventively particularly preferably designed such that it is able to transmit both tensile forces and heat. As a result, the joint is able to ensure in addition to a required advantageous vacuum tightness and the high thermal conductivity described above, a load on the thin HOPG window on traction. The window is thereby frictionally connected to the edge of the window and bulges as slightly as possible under the force generated by the pressure difference between the external atmosphere and the internal vacuum. Through this wide slight bulge, the window is stretched and thus claimed to train. The tensile strength of the inventively preferably used window material HOPG is very high and is comparable to that of titanium, so that a conceivable advantageous mechanical stress is present. In particular, this makes it possible to make the opening of the beam exit window or the window larger and thus expand the scope of the electron gun according to the invention. Furthermore, the shape of the beam exit window or of the window can not only be formed circular in this way, but also have an almost arbitrary geometric shape. For example, this opening can be formed rectangular or strip-shaped or have any conditional by an application form.
This makes it possible to produce x-ray emitters with a so-called soft x-ray radiation in a particularly advantageous manner. The soft X-ray radiation is a so-called XUV radiation or X-radiation long-wave X-radiation. It is often referred to as submillimeter radiation and is described, rather than by wavelength, by its associated photon energy, which is between 10 and 1000 electron volts.
Such soft X-radiation is unable to pass through the most varied materials, such as the hard X-radiation, with little weakening. As a result, it is necessary to provide as permeable windows as possible for the emergence of the soft X-ray radiation. By contrast, the present modular design makes it possible to generate the soft X-ray radiation directly and locally close to an application. For this purpose, the application can be positioned, for example, within an additional housing or the additional housing be provided with an exit window or a simple opening, which allows the soft X-ray radiation well. The additional housing may also preferably be designed as a radiation protection housing.
The X-ray target, for example a tungsten plate, which is arranged within the additional housing can be arranged directly behind the exit window of the electron gun or can be positioned at an application-specific distance from it. Furthermore, the X-ray target embodied, for example, as a tungsten plate may be positioned at a selected angle of inclination with respect to the beam path of the electrons. The additional housing can be evacuated depending on the requirements of an application itself, to allow the soft X-rays and electron beams as long as possible to the absorption in the desired object.
For other applications, the additional housing may be filled with a gas mixture. Finally, the additional housing may have at least one open side or be virtually absent, so that the generated soft X-ray radiation, for example, acts directly on an application locally.
According to another device-technical aspect of the present invention, the objects of the invention are achieved by a window for a beam exit window of an electron gun for generating ionizing radiation. The window according to the invention is made of a heat-dissipating material for dissipating the heat generated by the electron beam passing through and / or impinging on it. The material of the window is in particular highly heat dissipating.
The heat-dissipating material of the window is formed of a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG, Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite). The heat-dissipating material of the window has a spatial orientation of its structure such that a heat-transfer structure which is particularly highly thermally conductive coincides with the main propagation direction of the plane of the window.
The thickness of the window is preferably between 1 and 100 μm, more preferably between 1 and 30 μm and even more preferably between 1 and 15 μm.
The electron emitter according to the invention according to one of the previously described embodiments is used according to a further aspect of the invention in medical and / or food-technological devices for sterilizing products and / or articles by irradiation with ionizing radiation.
Furthermore, the electron emitter according to the invention is used according to one of the embodiments described above for the polymerization of paints and / or plastics by irradiation with ionizing radiation.
- Generating a directed electron beam in an electron emitter,
- - Emitting the electron radiation from the housing of the electron emitter through a window.
By forming the window for discharging the heat generated by the electron beams passing through and / or impinging on the window from a highly heat-dissipating material, wherein the heat-dissipating material of the window is formed from a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), the objects of the invention are achieved such that a higher power density of the electron beam can pass through the window.
- Generating a directed electron beam in an electron emitter,
- - Emitting the electron radiation from the housing of the electron emitter through a window.
As a result of the fact that the electron radiation of the electron emitter is directed to impinge on an X-ray target arranged outside the housing, according to the invention a soft X-ray radiation is generated.
In this case, the window for dissipating the heat generated by the passing and / or impinging electron radiation is preferably formed from a highly heat-dissipating material, wherein the heat-dissipating material of the window is formed from a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG, Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite).
