Description
The invention relates to a method for detecting X-ray radiation of an X-ray source, in which upon arrival of a quantum of X-radiation on a sensor, an electrical pulse is generated with a characteristic of the energy of the quantum pulse height, wherein a number of threshold energies is given and when exceeding the respective energy corresponding pulse height in each case a signal is output. It further relates to an X-ray system suitable for carrying out the method.
B. CCDs, sichtbar gemacht.X-ray systems are usually used to irradiate a body with X-ray radiation using an X-ray source and to show the penetration of the body, for example by means of a fluorescent screen or an image intensifier. The images are either on suitable film material, phosphor plates or electronic sensors, z. As CCDs, made visible.
This consists in its simplest form of a cathode and an anode, which sit in a vacuum within a sealed glass or metal body. From the cathode, electrons are emitted, accelerated by a high voltage to the anode and penetrate into the anode material. In the process, they are braked and essentially produce characteristic X-ray radiation and X-ray braking radiation.
Characteristic X-radiation is produced by the fact that the high-energy electrons accelerated in the X-ray tube in the anode strike out electrons from the innermost shells of the atoms of the anode material. Electrons from higher energy levels or free electrons "jump" into these gaps. The released energy is released in the form of material-specific discrete energy quanta.
By contrast, X-ray braking radiation is produced by the deceleration of the electrons as they pass through the metal of the anode, since each accelerated electrical charge generates electromagnetic radiation. The wavelength of the radiation depends on the value of the acceleration, so that at higher acceleration voltage or anode voltage further X-radiation is produced with higher-energy quanta. The maximum energy of the bremsstrahlung spectrum is accordingly the energy at which the total kinetic energy of the electron is given off to a single quantum. This limit energy depends only on the anode voltage and not on the anode material.
In the X-ray examination in medicine different radiation energies are needed for different areas of the body to different density tissues, such. B. fatty tissue or bone to penetrate. Decisive, as explained above, while the voltage that is supplied to the X-ray tube. Depending on the desired image statement, the tube voltage is selected, for example, between 38 kV and 120 kV. At low energies, much of the radiation is absorbed by the tissue, thereby making even the finest tissue differences on the X-ray film visible. High-energy radiation, on the other hand, penetrates tissue and materials much more easily, and contrast differences are greatly reduced.
In a conventional X-ray method, the object to be imaged is transilluminated by an X-ray source and imaged on an X-ray film. The result is a projection of the volume on a surface. In this projection, information concerning the third dimension of the illuminated body is largely lost. The reason for this is that with hindsight it can no longer be distinguished whether the weakening visible in the X-ray image was caused by a material of higher density or by a greater layer thickness.
This problem is solved by computed tomography (CT), in which many X-ray images of the object are created from the different directions and the volume information is subsequently reconstructed from these many images. As a rule, these 3D reconstructions are composed of individual sections that run transversely through the object. In this way, a density can be determined for each volume element of the object.
Since computed tomography requires a large number of x-ray images within a short time, CT detectors are required which can deliver the x-ray image directly in digital form to a data processing unit. For this purpose, electronic detectors are usually used, such as solid state detectors. For spatial resolution of the X-ray image, these detectors usually comprise pixel-like individual X-ray sensors.
The individual sensors of the detector can be implemented in different ways, but usually work on the basis of the internal photoelectric effect. When an X-ray quantum is incident on the sensor, an electrical pulse is generated which is characteristic in its pulse height for the energy of the quantum. The pixel-like arrangement of the sensors thus becomes one Location and energy resolution in principle every single incident X-ray quantum possible.
The pulses of the sensors can be counted by a trigger circuit for counting the incident X-ray quanta in the connected data processing device. In this case, an energy threshold is specified and when exceeding the pulse height of the sensor corresponding to this energy, a counting signal is output (single-pulse triggering). For conventional imaging, this threshold is chosen so that z. B. in the range 15 keV to 35 keV. For dual-energy imaging, another threshold z. B. in the range 50 keV to 80 keV provided.
Because of the high rates of X-ray quanta incident on the detector in computed tomography, the inherently attractive concept of a single quantum detector presents a challenge that is difficult to realize. One of the critical issues is the finite pulse duration typical of typical sensors (eg, CdTe or CdZnTe) about 10 ns (half width). In conjunction with a necessary electronic pulse shaping, this results in effective pulses of the order of z. B. about 30 ns to be registered individually.
With equidistantly arriving pulses, this alone would limit the maximum measurable rate to about 33 MHz per pixel, which corresponds to a maximum x-ray quantum flux of about 825 MHz / mm 2 for realistic pixel sizes with, for example, about 200 μm edge length. However, since the timing of the pulses is actually Poisson statistics, the probability that (on average) 33 million quanta per pixel per second will at least partially overlap pulses with one or more pulses will already be 26%. With the maximum fluxes of approx. 2 GHz / mm 2 , which is the maximum for computed tomography today, this probability even increases to over 60%. This implies that despite the use of, for example, shape filters in the beam path detector channels that see little or no weakening, for example, at the edge of the objects to be examined, can no longer resolve individual pulses, since the pulses of the incoming quantum may even overlap several times.
In Bereichen starker Überlagerung, d. h. z. With such a multiple superimposition, the pulse height then no longer drops below the level of the predetermined threshold energies of the triggers after each pulse. These then trigger less and less signals, so that the signal rate is no longer uniquely attributable to the actual quantum flux; one speaks of the onset of paralysis. At even higher quantum fluxes, the pulse height sinks less and less often below the level of the predetermined threshold energies of the triggers, since the pulse height constantly increases due to overlapping pulses. The trigger then triggers no more signal, the signal rate goes to zero. In areas of strong overlay, d. H. z. B. at the edge of the observed objects or in the air, this may mean that the data must be discarded.
In Schmidt H.U. "Measurement electronics in nuclear physics", Stuttgart 1986 (Chapter 10.1.1.) The function of an analog-to-digital converter for nuclear data processing is described. Here, pulses which are, for example, energy-proportional, are counted by comparing their respective pulse height with several stored threshold values in different counting channels. Among others, parallel ADCs are used.

The invention is therefore based on the object of specifying a method for measuring X-ray radiation and an X-ray system which also permits reliable and high-quality imaging in image areas of high X-ray quantum rates.
With regard to the method, this object is achieved according to the invention in that at least one of the predetermined threshold energies is higher than the maximum energy of the X-ray spectrum emitted by the X-ray emitter.
The invention is based on the consideration that a particularly reliable and high-quality imaging in image areas of high x-ray quantum rates would be possible if a reliable count of pulses could be guaranteed even with a superposition of multiple pulses. It can be consistently exploited the knowledge that add the pulse heights in the superposition of pulses. In the case of double superposition, at most twice the value of the simple pulse height can be achieved. In order to measure such a correspondingly higher pulse height, therefore, a further higher threshold energy should be specified for a trigger. In order for this trigger signal, which is intended for two-fold superimpositions, to detect only superimposed pulses, the threshold energy should be set such that it is higher than the maximum energy of the X-ray spectrum emitted by the X-ray emitter. Such energy can then namely, can not be achieved by a single X-ray quantum, and by triggering on the higher threshold energy then only at least two times superimposed pulses are detected. By specifying further, even higher threshold energies, multiply superimposed pulses can be counted accordingly.
When not falling below the respective predetermined threshold energy within a predetermined period of time, a signal is output. This means that a measurement of multiply superimposed pulses is detected not only by the addition of the pulse heights, but also by the extension of the duration of the electrical pulse. Even if the pulse duration of the measured pulse is longer than the usual pulse duration of a single pulse, this is a sign for a superposition of several individual pulses. By combining this time measurement with the pulse height measurement, an even more accurate and reliable measurement of superimposed pulses is made possible. Given only an additional threshold energy above, for example, twice the typical energy of an X-ray quantum then already three superimposed pulses can be counted, namely by the trigger of the first threshold energy, by the second threshold energy and by the trigger of the period.
Advantageously, the output signal is a count signal. In combination with the higher threshold energies for the signal-triggering trigger this allows a direct counting of the incident on the X-ray detector quanta in contrast to the usual energy measurement of the X-ray flux. This also allows any weighting of the measured quantum flux with a function other than the energy to improve the image contrast. This makes even easier and more reliable imaging possible.
With regard to the X-ray system, the object is achieved by the X-ray system comprises an X-ray source, a detector with a plurality of sensors, in which the respective sensor is designed such that it upon arrival of a quantum of X-ray radiation, an electrical pulse with one for the energy of Quants generates a pulse height characteristic and connected to the respective sensor data processing unit which evaluates the pulses of the respective sensor or a plurality of sensors by means of a trigger circuit with a number of predetermined threshold energies, which each outputs a signal when exceeding the respective energy pulse height a signal, at least one the predetermined threshold energy is higher than the maximum energy of the X-ray emitted by the X-ray source.
Advantageously, such an X-ray system is used in a computed tomography system or other devices which are operated at very high fluxes of X-rays.
The advantages associated with the invention are, in particular, that the specification of threshold energies which are higher than the maximum energy of the X-ray emitted by the X-ray source, a detection of multiple superimposed electrical pulses of the sensors of the X-ray detector is possible and this just at high rates and multiple superimposition of pulses can still be used for imaging. By means of such a pile-up rate measurement of the incident X-ray quanta, this is also quasi-linear in regimes with extremely high quantum rates for the X-ray energy radiated onto the detector. Although an increase in the statistical error compared to the individual pulse measurement is to be expected, as well as the energy resolution of the individual quantum is lost, but this additional information represents a significant improvement in the case of multiple superimposed X-ray quanta, where the pure triggering fails to individual pulses. Overall, therefore, a much better image reconstruction in computed tomography is possible or is in regimes with high quantum rates such. B. at the edge of the observed objects or in air at all possible.

At rates where multiple pulses are superimposed and the pulse heights increase, the threshold energies of each trigger are exceeded for longer and the triggers no longer trigger signals. As a result, the measured flux reaches a maximum (onset of paralysis) and then drops off again, since the pulse height is virtually permanently above the corresponding threshold energy of the trigger and almost no signals are triggered (complete paralysis).
