As the alcohol component having two or more hydroxyl groups, in principle any alcohol component having two or more hydroxyl groups and known to those skilled in the art and appearing suitable for carrying out the process according to the invention may be used.
The term "alcohol component" as used herein includes the alcohol in its protonated form, the alcohol in its partially protonated form, the alcohol in its deprotonated form, especially salts of the alcohol, as well as mixtures of the alcohol in its protonated form partially protonated form and its deprotonated form, or mixtures of the alcohol in one of the above-described forms and one or more salts of the alcohol.
As the alcohol component having two or more hydroxy groups, alcohols having a number of hydroxy groups in a range of 2 to 9, more preferably 3 to 8, and most preferably 3 to 6 are preferably used. The number of carbon atoms in the alcohol having two or more hydroxy groups is preferably in a range of 3 to 30, preferably 3 to 20, more preferably 3 to 10, and most preferably 3, 4 or 5.
Furthermore, as an alcohol component having two or more hydroxyl groups, an alcohol of industrial grade can also be used. "Technical quality" in the context of a chemical or a chemical composition means that the chemical or chemical composition has low levels of impurities. In particular, the chemical or chemical composition may range from 5 to 20 wt%, preferably from 5 to 15 wt%, more preferably from 5 to 10 wt% impurities, based on the total amount of the chemical or the chemical composition. More preferably, the chemical or chemical composition comprises from 1.5% to 5% by weight of impurities, based on the total amount of the chemical or chemical composition. By impurities are meant all components other than the chemical or chemical composition. The typical amount of impurity is not the same for all alcohol components, but the proportion of impurities in terms of classification as a "technical grade" substance or composition-dependent, or depending on the manufacturing process. A person skilled in the art is familiar with the classification as "technical quality" depending on the substance and the production process, or the composition and the production process.
It is also conceivable that the alcohol component having two or more hydroxyl groups is not a single alcohol or a technical grade alcohol, but a mixture of several alcohols as defined above. For example, several forms of the alcohol according to the above may be used as a mixture. Preference is given to using a plurality of alcohols characterized by at least one of the following features, such as different number of carbon atoms, different number of hydroxyl groups or different structure, or alcohols which simultaneously differ in two or more of the aforementioned features, as for example from industrial processes can be obtained as technical qualities.
