Abstract
In MIG / TIG welding of aluminum, argon or argon-helium mixtures are often used as shielding gas. It is known that the addition of molecular components such as nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide or nitrogen oxides, even at levels of less than 0.1%, greatly influences the arc characteristics. The inert gas according to the invention comprises a quaternary mixture of argon, helium, nitrogen and nitrous oxide, wherein the proportion of nitrous oxide up to 70 vpm, preferably 50 to 70 vpm, and the nitrogen content between 250 and 1000 vpm, but within these limits increases with increasing helium content , The gas mixture according to the invention achieves a good welding result and substantially improves the situation with regard to environmental protection and occupational safety.
Description
The The invention relates to a protective gas for arc welding of aluminum and aluminum alloys.
As "arc welding" become in the following all variations of the arc welding with melting or non-melting electrode under use a shielding gas, in particular metal inert gas (MIG) -, Metal active gas (MAG) and tungsten inert gas welding (TIG). The invention relates to the welding of Aluminum and aluminum alloys, hereinafter also referred to as the term "aluminum material" subsumed become; also the welding of different aluminum materials to each other should be encompassed by the invention.
The Special features when welding aluminum and aluminum alloys result from the property of aluminum, at the surface Upon contact with atmospheric oxygen immediately form an oxide layer. The formation of the firmly adhering oxide on the surface is the result of the base character of aluminum. The welding protection gas has the task of both the weld pool as well as the melting Welding additive to protect against oxidation by atmospheric oxygen and at the same time the electrical conductivity of the track the electric arc between the electrode and the workpiece to increase. The protective gas is usually argon or an argon-helium gas mixture is used. The latter are indeed more expensive, but the mixture component helium leads due a hotter arc and a cheaper one Energy distribution in the arc to a better penetration behavior and allows higher welding speeds. Furthermore Helium can contribute to reducing or preventing pores and reduce the consumption of filler metal. Problem with inert gas mixtures with a high proportion of helium on the other hand, the high cost of helium, the tendency of helium, expand the arc as well as increasing with increasing helium content Instability of the arc.
In Recently, therefore, the attempt was made, the welding Properties of inert gas mixtures based on argon-helium mixtures build up to improve by admixtures of other gases. there Often suffice admixtures in the two- to three-digit vpm range (0.001% to 0.1%) for measurable effects.

Of the present invention is based on the object for Arc welding of aluminum and its alloys to show an alternative to the known shielding gases, the good welding results and the health burden for the user as well as the burdens for the Environment reduced.
This object is achieved by a protective gas mixture containing up to 70 vpm nitrous oxide (N 2 O), 250 to 1000 vpm of nitrogen, balance argon and / or helium.
The addition of N 2 and N 2 O counteracts the property of helium to soften the arc, thereby increasing the spatial concentration of the arc. Furthermore, the stability of the arc is ensured even at higher levels of helium. The ozone-reducing effect of the N 2 O content leads to an improvement in terms of occupational safety and environmental protection. At the same time, the content of nitrogen, which is much higher than that of the N 2 O content, counteracts the formation of corrosive and toxic NO and NO 2 when using He-Ar mixtures doped with N 2 O alone, which in turn further reduces the health burden on the user and the environment is reduced.
The proportion of N 2 O is preferably between 50 and 70 vpm. An amount of less than 70 vpm N 2 O still has a positive effect in terms of ozone reduction and on the stability of the arc; at levels of less than 50 vpm, for example between 10 and 50 vpm N 2 O, these beneficial effects are still present but less pronounced.
In particularly advantageous developments of the invention, the nitrogen content in the quaternary mixture Ar-He-N 2 -N 2 O is adapted to the helium content. The preferred nitrogen content increases with increasing helium content, but remains in the range of below 1000 vpm. The content of N 2 O in the protective gas mixture is not changed. By adapting the nitrogen content to the helium content, the welding properties are optimized, since helium, as mentioned, on the one hand for the intensification of the penetration of advantage, on the other hand but also leads to an increasing helium content increasing instability and broadening of the arc. The adjusted nitrogen content provides the benefits of helium but increases the stability and concentration of the arc.
- - in the case of less than 10% helium: from 250 to 350 vpm of nitrogen,
- At a level of 10 to 50% helium: 400 to 500 vpm of nitrogen,
- - in a proportion of 50 to 100% helium: 700 to 800 vpm of nitrogen.
The mean values of the specified ranges of nitrogen content are in each case particularly preferred.
Further advantageous embodiments of the invention Shielding gas for TIG and MIG welding of aluminum included Additions of oxygen, carbon dioxide and / or nitrogen monoxide. The incorporation of active components is an improved Branding achieved and so the quality of welding overall further increased. The admixtures are preferably each below 100 vpm.
The shielding gas according to the invention is suitable for arc welding of aluminum or aluminum alloys with both consumable and non-consumable electrodes. In particular, a stable and quiet arc with ho hem energy input, a problem-free switching of the polarity of the tungsten electrode, an excellent penetration profile, a high energy input, a good quality of the weld, in particular without annoying seam discoloration and pores, as well as a high welding speed and a good forced attitude behavior achieved. By reducing the formation of NO and NO 2 , the burden on humans and the environment compared to the use of mixtures according to the prior art is substantially reduced.
