Description
The present invention relates to a side-pumped laser having a longitudinal axis along which a laser zone of a laser-active material having a first refractive index n L extends, which has a frontal Auskoppelende for laser radiation, along which a pumping light zone having a second refractive index n P , which has a coupling end for pumping light and which is bounded by a lateral surface facing the laser zone, passes through the pumping light into the laser zone, wherein the laser zone facing surface of the pumping light zone adjacent to a separation zone having a refractive index n T , which is smaller than n P , so that the pumping light zone is suitable for guiding the pumping light.
For example, lasers in rod or fiber form are called high power lasers or in communications technology as optical fiber amplifiers a laser-active core and a core enveloping the pump jacket used.
Fiber amplifiers can be losses in optical waveguides in optical data transmission offset by through so-called "optical Pumps "laser light is coupled into the fiber core, the laser-active substances of the Laser zone stimulates. The light pulse passing through the fiber core takes energy in addition to the excited ions and is reinforced by it.
The contains laser active material For example, crystalline Nd: YAG or it is in the form of quartz glass before, which contains dopants, which is a levy or a boost effect of laser radiation in the host material quartz glass. Both Dopants are usually rare earth cations (Lanthanides) or cations of the so-called transition metals.

It is proposed an inner core zone containing laser-active ions and the surrounded by an outer core zone, which contains no laser-active substance. Between the inner and the the outer core zone a separation zone is provided whose refractive index is smaller as the two core zones. The separation zone prevents migration the laser-active substance from the core zone during the fiber-drawing process and therefore it is made of comparatively high viscosity glass. Thereby remains the radial concentration distribution of the active ions, as they are in the preform has been given, also obtained in the laser fiber.
The appropriate intensity distribution for this optimized distribution of the active ions of the pump light is determined by the refractive indices of the inner and outer core zones and separation zone and shows an intensity maximum in the central core area, which falls off quickly to the outside.
Die Pumplicht-Intensität nimmt danach mit zunehmender Faserlänge exponentiell ab.at The laser active fibers of this type, the pump light is the front side coupled into the active fiber core and thereby inevitably priority near the coupling point - so in the area of the front side of the fiber - absorbed. The pumping light intensity decreases thereafter exponentially with increasing fiber length from.
Around a sufficient pumping light effect even after a certain To ensure penetration depth is a particularly high energy density of the pumped light radiation in the Coupling area required. This goes with a degradation of the Core area by heat and photodarking. Furthermore to lead the high energy density of the pump light in the coupling region on the one hand and the exponential decrease in pumping light power, on the other hand too unwanted non-linear effects.
In a side-pumped laser, the pump light to provide as large as possible Do not direct excitation energy directly into the laser-active core, but coupled into the core via the lateral surface. Because of the length of the fiber, the lateral surface is many times larger than the fiber end face.

When Pumplichtquellen multiple laser diodes are used, which at different radiate radial positions on the front side in the quartz glass element. Depending on the radial position of the laser diode hit the pump light rays at axially different positions on the mirror coating and are reflected from there into the laser rod.
The The pumping light irradiated in the quartz glass element has a substantially annular intensity distribution and it is also possible depending on the number and posi tion of the laser diodes, the irradiation of the Pumping light over the length of the laser rod to distribute more or less evenly. The device however, and the adjustment of the components is very complex.

Aufgabenstellungtask
Of the Invention is based on the object, the known side-pumped Laser in terms of a higher To improve the efficiency of the pump light.
- (a) the pumping light zone has a thickness which varies in the direction of the longitudinal axis over at least part of its length,
- (b) the pumping light zone has a refractive index n p varying in the direction of the longitudinal axis over at least part of its length,
- (c) the separation zone has at least over a part of its length a refractive index n T varying in the direction of the longitudinal axis.
Of the inventive laser is for example in the form of a fiber, a rod or a tube educated.
In In the laser zone, the laser radiation is generated and guided.
The Separation zone directly or indirectly adjoins the laser zone. It has a smaller refractive index than the material of the laser zone up and wearing thus to the light guide in the laser zone. Furthermore the separation zone directly or indirectly adjoins the pumping light zone at. The separation zone can be relatively thin be formed, which, for example, the cost of a doping keeps it low for lowering the refractive index.
The pumping light zone extends along the laser zone. In contrast to the known laser described above, according to the inven The pumping light zone is designed so that it is suitable for guiding light. In particular, a "refractive index jump downwards" is provided for this purpose on the lateral surface facing the laser zone. This means that the separation zone adjoining the lateral surface also has a smaller refractive index than the pumping light zone. If the pumping light zone is formed in layers with an inner and an outer circumferential surface, a refractive index jump must be provided on both sides to ensure the condition for a light guide (by total reflection).
Diese Maßnahme liegt nicht auf der Hand, denn das in der Pumplichtzone geführte Pumplicht muss zur Anregung laseraktiver Substanzen letztlich in die Laserzone gelangen.aim this measure is it a multiple reflection of pump light modes and a leadership of the To allow pumping light within the pumping light zone. This measure is not obvious, because the guided in the pumping light zone pump light must ultimately excite laser active substances into the laser zone reach.
Around To achieve this, the invention provides that at least one Part of the length the pumping light zone the conditions for the reflection of the guided pump light so change that pump light gradually enters the laser zone. this causes a uniform activation of the laser-active substances the length the relevant activation section and leads to a higher efficiency of the radiated pump light.
Im einfachsten Fall ist die Dickenänderung als konische Verjüngung der Pumplichtzone in Ausbreitungsrichtung des geführten Pumplichts oder ziehzwiebelähnliche Verjüngung mit so genannter „Taperform” ausgeführt.at Variant (a) is a change the thickness of the pumping light zone provided in the axial direction. The Thickness of the pumping light zone increases in the direction of main propagation the pump light radiation off. In the simplest case, the thickness change as a conical rejuvenation the pumping light zone in the propagation direction of the guided pump light or onion-like rejuvenation executed with so-called "Taperform".
Der Brechungsindex der Pumplichtzone nimmt hierzu in Hauptausbreitungsrichtung der Pumplichtstrahlung ab.at Variant (b) provides that the refractive index of the Pumplichtzone changed in the axial direction. This leads to, that the conditions for Change a reflection of the pump light at the interface to the separation zone, and it thereby becomes a gradual one Decoupling of the pump light in the separation zone comes. The refractive index the pumping light zone takes this in Hauptausbreitungsrichtung the Pumping light radiation off.
The same effect is achieved if, according to variant (c), the refractive index n T of the separation zone changes over at least part of its length, in particular if the refractive index of the separation zone increases over at least part of its length - seen in the direction of the coupling-out end.
By the - continuously or stepwise - axial change the refractive index according to the variants (b) and (c) the NA of the pumping light zone is reduced over the relevant length section, so that a uniform coupling can also be done by pumping light into the laser zone when the Thickness of the pumping light zone above the relevant length section is constant.
The change in the refractive index in the direction of the longitudinal axis is produced, for example, during the production of the pumped light zone by means of a customary deposition method of synthetic, doped SiO 2 (OVD, VAD, MCVD) in that the concentration of the dopant is varied over the longitudinal axis.
Bei allen Varianten, die auch gemeinsam vorgesehen sein können, kann die betreffende Änderung (Dicke der Pumplichtzone/Brechungsindex) kontinuierlich, schrittweise oder auch unregelmäßig über die Länge der Pumplichtzo ne beziehungsweise der Trennzone einmal oder mehrmals hintereinander erfolgen.at all variants, which can also be provided together, can the change in question (Thickness of the pumping light zone / refractive index) continuously, stepwise or even irregularly over the Length of Pumplichtzo ne or the separation zone once or several times take place one behind the other.
Ziel dieser Maßnahmen ist es, die Bedingungen für die Reflexion über die Länge der betreffenden Aktivierungs-Teilstrecke so zu verändern, dass sich für verschiedene, innerhalb der Pumplichtzone geführte Pumplicht-Moden unterschiedliche Orte ergeben, an denen die Auftreffwinkel der Lichtmoden zu der der Laserzone zugewandten Mantelfläche zu steil für Totalreflexion sind.aim of these measures is it the conditions for the reflection about the length change the activation subsection concerned so that for different, guided within the pumping light zone pump light modes different Give places where the angles of incidence of the light modes to the The laser zone facing surface too steep for total reflection are.
Ensuring the light guiding within the pumping light zone on the one hand and the axial change of the conditions for the reflection at the interface on the other hand cause the different light modes of the pumping light to enter the laser zone at axially different locations. If the pump light is coupled into the pumping light zone with different angles on the face side, depending on the coupling-in angle, another point results where the condition for the total reflection is no longer satisfied and the pumping light penetrates into the laser zone. This causes a uniform activation of the laser active substances over the length of the relevant activation section and leads to a higher efficiency of the radiated pump light.
The pumping light zone thus has the task of guiding the pumping light. In this case, the physical effect of total reflection is used to guide the light. However, in order to allow penetration of the pumping light modes in the laser zone, one or more of the above measures (a) to (c) are provided, which cause the pump light after each reflection at an ever steeper angle to the interface with the medium meets the refractive index n T. As soon as the angle of incidence (angle between incoming pump beam and the interface normal) becomes smaller than the critical angle of total reflection, the condition for total reflection is no longer satisfied and the pumping light can penetrate into the laser zone and optically pump it.
- (d) the pumping light zone has a bend over at least part of its length,
- (e) the pumping light zone has scattering centers at least over part of its length.
According to the preferred Variant (d) the pumping light zone is bent - for example in the form of a Coil or a spiral. In that case, the "direction" of the light guide deviates into the pumping light zone from the straight main propagation direction of the pumping light radiation off, leaving for the guided in the pumping light zone Pumplicht constantly change the reflection conditions in the axial direction, so that Pumping light modes can gradually enter the separation zone.
Bei einer weiteren Variante zur Auskopplung von Pumplicht aus der Pumplichtzone die Trennzone in die Laserzone ist vorgesehen, dass die Pumplichtzone mindestens über einen Teil ihrer Länge Streuzentren aufweist.at a further variant for coupling pump light from the pumping light zone the separation zone in the laser zone is provided that the pumping light zone at least over a part of their length Has scattering centers.
At The scattering centers are directed or undirected Reflection of the pumping light radiation, which also generates light modes for which the Conditions for Total reflection at the interface to the separation zone are not met, so these light modes over enter the separation zone in the laser zone. The scattering centers will be through even or statistically distributed regions with a refractive index other than that generates the pumping light zone. The areas can be amorphous or crystalline Particles are formed, for example by graphite particles.
In einer besonders bevorzugten Ausführungsform des erfindungsgemäßen Lasers grenzt die Trennzone unmittelbar an die Laserzone an.In a particularly preferred embodiment the laser according to the invention adjoins the separation zone directly to the laser zone.
The Separation zone carries while directly to the leadership the laser radiation in the laser zone at.
Dabei hat es sich besonders bewährt, wenn die Trennzone an die Pumplichtzone und an die Laserzone unmittelbar angrenzt, wobei der Brechungsindex nT der Trennzone kleiner als nP und kleiner als nL istIt has proven particularly useful if the separation zone directly adjacent to the pumping light zone and to the laser zone, wherein the refractive index n T of the separation zone is less than n P and less than n L
The Separation zone carries thereby at the same time to the light guidance of the pumping light in the pumping light zone and for guiding the laser radiation in the laser zone and ensures it Furthermore an immediate and undisturbed transition of the pumping light entering the separation zone into the laser zone.
The suitable thickness of the separation zone depends on the thickness of the laser. For a laser in the form of a fiber has it turns out to be cheap proven when the separation zone has a thickness of at least 5 microns.
Preferably consist of the pumping light zone, the separation zone and the laser zone Quartz glass.
The formation of the zones of one and the same base material - namely doped or undoped quartz glass - facilitates the production and largely avoids problems due to different thermal expansions. The refractive index of quartz glass can be lowered and increased by adding dopants or by microstructuring. By "quartz glass" is meant here also a glass containing high silicic acid with an SiO 2 content of at least 80% by weight.
In view of a low refractive index n T of the separation zone, it has proved to be advantageous if the separation zone consists of quartz glass which is doped with fluorine.
Fluor bewirkt eine Absenkung des Brechungsindex von Quarzglas und lässt sich auch in hohen Konzentrationen bis zu 9 Gew.-%, vorzugsweise im Bereich zwischen 1 bis 5 Gew.-%, vergleichsweise einfach und homogen in Quarzglas einbringen.fluorine causes a reduction in the refractive index of quartz glass and can be also in high concentrations up to 9 wt .-%, preferably in the range between 1 to 5 wt .-%, comparatively simple and homogeneous in Insert quartz glass.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the laser according to the invention, the pumped light zone with a lateral surface facing away from the laser zone adjoins an outer medium with a refractive index n A , where: n A <n T.
The pumping light zone is in this case in the radial cross-section annular and it adjoins with its inner shell to the separation zone, and with its outer shell to an outer medium. The crush Number n A of the external medium is preferably chosen as low as possible and in particular as much lower than n T. If the critical angles of the total reflection of the separation zone / pumping light zone interface and the pumping surface zone / outer medium interface differ greatly, leakage of the pumping light into the external medium can be more easily prevented.
In view of this, it has proved useful if the difference in refractive indices between n A and n T is at least 0.03.
In order to guide the entire pump radiation from the region of the pumped light zone into the laser zone, the refractive indices of pumping light zone and separation zone in the region of the coupling-out end are as large as possible and at the same time smaller than the refractive index n L of the laser zone.
The cooling the laser can over the pumping light zone by means of air or liquid cooling done. It will, however an embodiment the laser according to the invention preferred in which the external medium in the form of an outer jacket is formed, which preferably with a metallic surface layer is provided.
The pumping light zone is in this case provided by an outer sheath having a lower refractive index n A , which contributes to the guidance of the pumping light in the pumping light zone. This embodiment enables cooling of the laser via a direct connection to the outer jacket or to a metallic surface layer on the outer jacket. Over this metallic surface layer, a particularly good heat-dissipating connection to a heat sink is possible, such as a solder joint.
Bei einer weiteren bevorzugten Ausführungsform des Lasers ist die der Laserzone abgewandte Mantelfläche der Pumplichtzone mit einer Metallschicht versehen.at a further preferred embodiment the laser is the lateral surface facing away from the laser zone Pumplichtzone provided with a metal layer.
The Metal layer can in this case both the heat dissipation and as a mirror coating serve so that even when in contact with higher refractive index media, such as dirt or mounts, the light guide in the pumping light zone is maintained.
Especially with a view to optimal cooling the laser in one embodiment of the laser with a varying in the direction of the longitudinal axis seen Thickness of the pumping light zone, it has also proven to be favorable if the layer thickness of the outer jacket is designed so that in the axial direction a constant outer diameter of the laser results.
This facilitates the handling of the laser and proves especially for a laser with a small outer diameter (less than 2.5 mm) as low, the on a plane heat sink or wound between two heat sinks can be moved. Because of the uniform outer diameter, a uniform heat transfer from the laser to the heat sink. The laser can also do this with a metallic coating be provided. To the heat transfer To further improve, is a two-sided thermal connection through the outer jacket Insert of soft metal foils (for example indium) or by means of solder suitable.
Especially with a laser with a maximum outside diameter of 2.5 mm or less is preferably an outer layer of a plastic and / or made of carbon.

In addition to the advantages already mentioned, the design of the laser according to the invention also has the following advantages over the prior art:
In the case of a double-core laser fiber, the pump light is coupled into the fiber on the front side and guided both in the core and in the pump jacket. The fiber is thus stressed very unevenly, the pumping light is absorbed in the fiber primarily in the vicinity of the coupling point, because here the intensity is highest. The absorbed power then decreases exponentially with increasing length. By using very long and low-doped active cores, it is hereby avoided that the active core absorbs the pumping light too strongly in the vicinity of the coupling-in point and the fiber is damaged by the resulting generation of heat or by a too high degree of inversion (photodarkening). The se long fibers are limited by non-linear effect such as SBS and SRS (stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering) in their applicability.
According to the invention The active core is not pumped on the front side. The pump light will rather, by using the release layer with reduced refractive index first led only in the pumping coat. The conical shape of the pumping jacket causes the pumping beam with every reflection at the interface between pump casing and external medium with a steadily steeper angle of incidence on the interface to Separating layer meets. Only when this reflection angle of the guided pump radiation steeper than the limit angle of total reflection, penetrates the pump light through the separating layer into the core and pumps it. Because the pump light coupled at different angles in the fiber / rod is, the pump light penetrates depending on the angle of incidence on another Place in the core. Thus results over the rod length a more homogeneous distribution of absorption in the core than in a standard double-core laser fiber the case is because the core is not from the front but more evenly through the front lateral surface is pumped. By compared to the double-core laser fiber more homogeneous Distribution of the pumping light in the active core are also higher dopants of the active core possible, because the heat deposited in the core during pumping is more evenly distributed over the active volume.
On a plastic coating can be dispensed with. this has several advantages. On the one hand, the production costs are reduced, there on an additional Step can be omitted. On the other hand one avoids possible Heat problems resulting from a possible interaction of the plastic coating with a part of the pump radiation results. Through this interaction can it causes a heating of the plastic coating and unfavorable Fall to destruction the laser fiber or the laser rod come. Furthermore results by dispensing with the plastic coating at a suitable Choice of external medium (eg. As water or air), a larger refractive index jump or a larger NA at the interface between pump casing and external medium as with standard double-core laser fibers. Thus, the use possible from pump sources with poorer beam quality, as well as rays led in the pump coat be that at a very steep angle to the interface between Coat and outer medium meet.
Besides that is the opening angle the emitted laser radiation over a wide range independently adjustable by the refractive index of the pump sheath. The opening angle The emitted laser radiation is only through the NA, which is through the reduced refractive index of the separating layer and the refractive index of the active core results, but not on the refractive index of the pumping mantle certainly. By suitable choice and adjustment of the refractive indices of active core and the separation layer (by suitable dopant concentrations) can the opening angle the emitted laser radiation or the NA of the laser rod via a wide range can be adjusted.
It This results in an increase in the maximum pump power and efficiency by enlargement of the Coupling surface. By the very big one Einkoppelendfläche the pump sheath is compared to the small end face of a Standard dual-core fiber laser a simpler and more effective coupling of the pump radiation possible. Consequently can be based on the use of elaborate coupling optics and on dispensed with the use of costly pump sources with high beam quality become.
Hierdurch werden entweder „thermal Lensing” Effekte zusätzlich unterbunden oder was wesentlicher ist, höhere Pump und Laser-Energiedichten ermöglicht.rod laser are constructed of a laser-active rod. There are around the staff there is no light-carrying Layer. When pumping, the laser rod heats up. These warming leads to so-called "thermal Lensing effect, which is due to the warming the refractive index of the rod changes locally. This reduces the beam quality the emitted laser radiation. In contrast, has a laser rod according to the invention a light-guiding active area, so that "thermal lensing "effects due to the multiple reflections at the interface to the separation layer none effect substantial influence on the beam quality. Besides that is the diameter of the conical laser rod according to the invention is smaller than that of a conventional bar laser, resulting in the conical laser rod better cooled can be. This will result in either "thermal lensing" effects additionally suppressed or what is more essential, higher pumping and laser energy densities allows.
