Abstract
Description
The The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display of PSA (polymer sustained alignment) type, as well as new liquid crystal media and novel polymerizable compounds for use in PSA displays.
The currently used liquid crystal displays (FK displays) are usually those of the TN type (twisted nematic). These However, they have the disadvantage of a strong viewing angle dependency of contrast. In addition, so-called VA displays (vertical alignment), which have a wider viewing angle. The Contains FK cell of a VA display a layer of FK medium between two transparent electrodes, the FK medium is usually has a negative value of dielectric (DK) anisotropy. The molecules the FK layer are in the off state perpendicular to the electrode surfaces (Homeotropic) or tilted homeotropic ("tilted") oriented. at Applying an electrical voltage to the electrodes finds a Reorientation of FK molecules parallel to the electrode surfaces instead of. Furthermore, OCB displays (optically compensated bend) known to be based on a birefringence effect and a FK layer with a so-called "bend" orientation and usually have positive (DK) anisotropy. When applying an electrical Tension takes place a reorientation of the FK molecules perpendicular to the electrode surfaces. About that In addition, OCB ads typically contain one or more birefringent ones optical retardation films to prevent unwanted light transmission the "bend" cell in the dark state to avoid. OCB displays have another compared to TN displays Angle of view and shorter Switching times.
In VA displays of the newer type is the uniform alignment of the FK molecules on several smaller domains limited within the FK cell. Between these domains, also as tilt domains ("tilt domains"), exist Disclinations. VA displays with tilt domains wise, compared to conventional ones VA ads, a greater viewing angle independence of contrast and grayscale. Besides, such ads are easier to manufacture, as an additional treatment of the electrode surface for uniform orientation of the molecules in the on state, such as. by rubbing, is no longer necessary. Instead, will the preferred direction of the tilt or tilt angle (English: "pretilt") by a special Design of the electrodes controlled. In the so-called MVA ads (multidomain vertical alignment) this becomes common achieved in that the electrodes have protrusions or protrusions, the cause a local pretilt. As a consequence, the FK molecules in the Applying a voltage in different, defined regions of the Cell oriented in different directions parallel to the electrode surfaces. This achieves a "controlled" switching and the emergence of disturbing Avoiding disclination lines. Although this arrangement improves the Viewing angle of the ad, but leads to reduce their translucency. An evolution from MVA uses protrusions only on one electrode side, the opposing On the other hand, the electrode has slits, which translates into light transmission improved. The slotted electrodes generate when creating a Voltage an inhomogeneous electric field in the FK cell, so that Furthermore, a controlled switching is achieved. To further Improvement of light transmission can the distances between the slits and protrusions are enlarged, which, however, in turn to an extension the switching times leads. The so-called PVA (Patterned VA) you get without any protrusions by passing both electrodes on opposite sides through slots structured, resulting in an increased Contrast and improved light transmission leads, but technologically difficult and the display is more sensitive to mechanical influences (knocking, Engl. "Tapping", etc.). For many Applications, such as monitors and especially TV screens, is a shortening the switching times as well as an improvement of the contrast and the Luminance (transmission) of the display asked.
A further development is the so-called PSA displays (polymer sustained alignment). In the FK medium, a small amount (for example 0.3% by weight, typically <1% by weight) of a polymerizable compound is added, which after filling in the FK - Cell is polymerized or crosslinked in situ with applied electrical voltage between the electrodes, usually by UV photopolymerization. The addition of polymerisable mesogenic or liquid-crystalline compounds, also referred to as "reactive mesogens" (RM), to the LC mixture has proved particularly suitable. There are two applications to mention, the so-called PSA-VA displays and PSA-OCB displays. As can be demonstrated in test cells, the PSA method leads to a pretilt in the cell. For PSA-OCB displays, it is therefore possible to stabilize the bend structure so that it can do without or reduce offset voltage. In the case of PSA-VA displays, this pretilt has a positive effect on the switching times. For PSA-VA displays, a standard MVA or PVA pixel and electrode layout can be used. In addition, but you can, for example, with only a structured electrode side and without protrusions, which considerably simplifies the production and at the same time leads to a very good contrast with very good light transmission.

It However, it has been shown that when used in PSA displays FK mixtures known from the prior art and RMs still some Disadvantage. So far from any arbitrary soluble Monomer or RM for PSA ads, and it seems difficult, more appropriate selection criteria as the direct PSA experiment to find with pretilt measurement. Even smaller is the selection, though a polymerization by means of UV light without the addition of photoinitiators required is what for certain applications may be beneficial.
It there is still a great need for PSA ads, in particular of VA and OCB type, as well as LC media and polymerizable Compounds for use in such displays as those above Do not or only slightly show the disadvantages described and have improved properties. In particular, there is one greater Need for PSA displays or materials with a high specific Resistance at the same time big Working temperature range, short switching times even at low temperatures and lower threshold voltage containing a variety of gray levels, allow a high contrast and a wide viewing angle, as well as high values of the "voltage holding ratio "(HR) after UV exposure.
Of the It was an object of the invention to provide PSA displays, the disadvantages mentioned above are not or only to a lesser extent Have dimensions, allow the setting of a pretilt angle and preferably simultaneously very high specific resistances, have low threshold voltages and low switching times.
Surprised It has now been found that this object can be achieved by PSA displays according to the invention which uses a polymerized compound having a biaryl structural element of the formula I according to claim 1 included. This could be done in conjunction with a FK medium using pretilt measurements in VA-Tilt measuring cells. In particular, one could Pretilt be achieved without the addition of photoinitiator.

The polymerizable compounds are polymerized or crosslinked in the FK medium between the substrates of the LC display by applying a voltage by in-situ polymerization (if a compound contains two or more polymerizable groups). Suitable and preferred polymerization methods are, for example, thermal or photopolymerization, preferably photopolymerization, in particular UV photopolymerization. If appropriate, one or more initiators can also be added. Suitable conditions for the polymerization, as well as suitable types and amounts of initiators, are known in the art and described in the literature. If an initiator is used, its proportion in the total mixture is preferably 0.001 to 5 wt .-%, particularly preferably 0.005 to 1 wt .-%. The polymerization can also be carried out without addition of an initiator.
The Biaryl compounds according to the invention are particularly suitable for the polymerization without initiator, which is a considerable advantage brings, such as lower material costs and especially one less contamination of the FK medium due to possible residual amounts of the initiator or its degradation products.
The LC medium may also contain one or more stabilizers to prevent unwanted spontaneous polymerization of the RMs, for example during storage or transportation. Suitable types and amounts of stabilizers are known to those skilled in the art and described in the literature. If stabilizers are used, their proportion, based on the total amount of polymerizable compounds, is preferably 10 to 5000 ppm, more preferably 50 to 500 ppm.
Die erfindungsgemäßen FK-Medien enthalten vorzugsweise < 5%, besonders bevorzugt < 1%, ganz besonders bevorzugt < 0.5 % an polymerisierbaren Verbindungen, insbesondere Biarylverbindungen der oben genannten Formeln. The FK media according to the invention preferably contain <5%, more preferably <1%, most preferably <0.5 % of polymerizable compounds, in particular biaryl compounds the above formulas.

Mischungsbeispiel AMixture example A
Mischungen in VA-e/o-Testzellen gefüllt (90° gerieben, Orientierungsschicht
VA-Polyimid, Schichtdicke d≈4μm).
As Table 1 can be seen with the monomers of the invention a significant increase in the Tilts (i.e., reduction in Tiltwinkels) achieved after polymerization especially without the use of a photoinitiator.
