Description
In the course of the growing number of biogas plants, the biogas plant operators are increasingly lacking land to recover the residual fermentation substrate on cultivated land as fertilizer and a transport of up to 95% water-containing fermentation substrate to more remote areas is too costly. The operators of wastewater treatment plants face the same problem in the future with their sewage sludge. It is therefore sought after economic opportunities to utilize the fermentation substrates. The prerequisite for further use is the drying of these substrates. The remaining solid can then be sent to incineration or applied to more distant arable land, since the transport has become much cheaper.
The drying of fermentation substrates or sewage sludges can currently only be carried out by previously dewatering by means of decanters or filter presses, since the waste heat from the energy producers which is to be used economically is not sufficient to remove the water of the resulting fermentation substrate. The biogas plant operators must, however, still further use the retained water for further use, a return of the water in the process is prohibited by the associated concentration of pollutants, so that their problem situation is not significantly improved by this procedure. The odor-developing substances remain mainly in the liquid phase, so that the wet solid can currently be dried in differently constructed drying plants. In sewage sludge, it is preferred solar drying plants. These are warehouses, which are heated by the sun and through which a possibly heated air flow is led. The liquid phase is returned to the water treatment. The air or gaseous phase that is produced during drying with odor and pollutants must be treated.
The waste heat of a combustion unit is previously transferred into a cooling circuit and then optionally supplied to a further use, such. B. for heating buildings and the fermenter. The waste heat in the exhaust gas is used only in individual cases. Generally this is released unused to the environment. The most complete utilization of the waste heat gains relevance only recently with the will to dry the fermentation substrate. However, the drying of the fermentation substrate is counteracted by economic considerations and a high pollutant load in the air.
The drying of fermentation substrate must be feasible with the use of all existing waste heat from the combustion unit and with the solution of all problems with regard to the existing pollutants. The dried fermentation substrate must be able to be incinerated with low emissions during its thermal utilization.
As ingredients and problematic substances from the fermentation substrate, which stand in the way of further processing in particular drying, in particular the ammonia and sulfidic sulfur compounds, mainly hydrogen sulfide have been identified. Since these compounds are also part of the biogas, relatively large amounts of the oxides of these compounds are emitted during its combustion. So that there is a need for action here too.
In the production of biogas, the biogas is produced under anaerobic conditions, which give rise to oxygen-poor and hydrogen-rich compounds. The main product is the hydrocarbon methane. The by-products formed are the abovementioned substances ammonia and hydrogen sulfide as well as large amounts of carbon dioxide, which are distributed in these two media as a result of equilibrium between the aqueous substrate and the gas phase above it. The resulting carbon dioxide forms small amounts of carbon dioxide when dissolved in water. In the reaction with the dissolved ammonia dissolved ammonium carbonate or ammonium bicarbonate is formed. Ammonia, when dissolved in water, also reacts to a small extent with ammonium hydroxide, which contributes to the elevated pH of 8. Hydrogen sulfide as a weak acid forms small amounts of hydrogen sulfide in aqueous solution. Hydrogen sulphide, like carbonic acid, is thus able to neutralize part of the dissolved ammonia. All substances involved are in equilibrium with one another depending on their concentration in the gas phase of the biogas plant. The discharge of fermentation substrate from the biogas plant and the associated change in the equilibrium of the dissolved gases with the gas phase leads to their partial release and associated immissions.
In the thermal utilization of the biogas for energy production in the incinerator, the compounds that are in the gas phase with the methane, except for the carbon dioxide oxidized by atmospheric oxygen and converted into their oxygen-rich compounds. These compounds are emitted with the exhaust gas and are regarded as air pollutants whose concentration is considerably higher than in the exhaust gas of the Natural gas combustion. The proportion of air pollutants must therefore be reduced.
Furthermore, the oxides formed with water form acids which, when the waste heat energy is recovered by condensation of the water present in the exhaust gas, lead to corrosion of the plants. The strongest acids are those of nitrogen oxides from ammonia and sulfur dioxide from hydrogen sulfide.
- 1. The drying of the fermentation substrate may only take place with existing waste heat.
- 2. During drying, no pollutants may be released into the environment
- 3. The dried fermentation substrate must be low in pollutants
- 4. The technological expenditure for drying the fermentation substrate must not affect the economic efficiency of the energetic use of biogas.
In addition, a method is to be presented that meets the requirements of a low-emission drying with optimal use of the available waste heat with little technical effort.
In the production and combustion of biogas arise, as already described, therefore, two groups of compounds. The compounds from the biogas plant are, with the exception of the carbon dioxide reducing agent and the compounds from the combustion of biogas oxidizing agent.
Reaktion 1 Reaktion 2 If the compounds present in the fermentation substrate ammonia and hydrogen sulfide are reacted with the compounds resulting from the combustion, the two groups of substances react to compounds such as atmospheric nitrogen, sulfur and water, which have no relevance immission law. Advantageously, the exhaust gas loses its acid properties through the reduction of its pollutant oxides, so that the condensation of the water from the exhaust gas is possible without damaging the materials. Residues of methane present in the fermentation substrate support the reaction.
According to the invention the fermentation substrate, the dissolved gases are withdrawn in the main, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide in a vacuum chamber at a temperature of advantageously about 60 ° C. However, the fermentation substrate contains significantly more ammonia than is needed to react with the exhaust gas from the incinerator. This requires adjustment of the stoichiometric balance of the compounds from the fermentation substrate and those in the exhaust gas. To achieve this there are several possibilities.
On the one hand, part of the ammonia from the fermentation substrate, which is preferably under atmospheric pressure in a storage container but may also be under slight overpressure, can be converted into nitrogen oxide with air in a combustion chamber according to the invention. The reaction is preferably carried out catalytically. The heat required for catalysis can be taken from the exhaust gas. The other part of the ammonia is mixed with the exhaust gases formed in the combustion chamber and the incinerator so that the resulting nitrogen oxides can react with the ammonia in a reaction space located in the exhaust gas stream to nitrogen and water. The adjustment of the stoichiometric equilibrium in the reaction space for the conversion of the pollutants is achieved by measuring at least one gas component of the exhaust gas and controlling the ammonia supply. On the other hand, part of the ammonia from the fermentation substrate can be reacted with the biogas in the incineration plant, and the other part of the ammonia is then admixed with the exhaust gas flow of the incinerator. Again, the stoichiometric ratio is set via the measurement of at least one exhaust gas component via metering devices.
The reaction of the gas stream from the incinerator with that from the fermentation substrate can be accomplished by various methods. On the one hand, the mixture is heated to 800-1100 ° C to ignite the non-catalytic reactions, on the other hand, the mixture over a catalyst at the given exhaust gas temperature of 300-500 ° C for Be brought reaction. When using catalysts, both gas streams may have to be freed of sulfur compounds, since the sulfur that forms can poison the catalysts. The substitution of the sulfur compounds is preferably carried out with ferrous compounds which form sparingly soluble iron sulfide. Other methods such as membrane methods are also possible.
The pollutant-depleted water from the fermentation substrate can be evaporated on the one hand by the direct contact with the pollutant-reduced exhaust gas. A mixture of the exhaust gas with fresh air to lower the temperature to prevent the self-ignition dried fermentation substrate may be useful. On the other hand, the energy from the exhaust gas can also be transferred to a second system, thereby drying the fermentation substrate. The heat carrier of the second system may be a liquid preferably water or a gas preferably air depending on the type of drying plant to be used. The evaporated water is recovered by condensation. The energy released during the condensation is preferably used to evaporate the water remaining in the fermentation substrate. The use elsewhere such as for heating the fermenter is also possible. The recovered in the condensation, depleted with nitrogen compounds water can be returned to the process of biogas production. The obtained low-emission, dried solid of the fermentation substrate is an excellent fuel, so that this material can be used internally or externally for further energy production.
