Description
The present invention relates to an articulated chain made of alternating chain links that are connected to one another in a chain joint, the chain joint comprises a joint sleeve and a joint pin which is pivotably mounted in the joint sleeve, the joint surface of the joint pin and / or the joint sleeve with a PVD Hard material layer is provided.
Articulated chains with chain links connected to one another via a chain joint are used in various forms in the prior art. For the most part, these are plate-link chains in which an inner chain link consisting of two parallel inner link plates connected by means of two joint sleeves alternates with an outer chain link consisting of two outer link plates connected to one another by means of two joint pins. A joint sleeve of an inner chain link and a joint pin of an adjacent outer chain link each form a chain joint. When used as drive or conveyor chains, the area of the chain joints in particular is heavily stressed, so that there is a great need for a wear-resistant bearing surface. In addition to their use as drive or conveyor chains, articulated chains are again increasingly being used in the automotive industry to control the internal combustion engine. In this area of application, the demands on wear and corrosion resistance are particularly high, as regular maintenance and the associated lubrication of the chain cannot be assumed or only at long intervals, but with the smallest possible chain dimensioning, the loads are relatively high at the same time and the load profile is highly variable.
In order to achieve the necessary wear resistance and to avoid elongation caused by wear, the joint pins and / or joint sleeves of conventional joint chains are subjected to a heat treatment, e.g. tempering, carburizing, carbonitriding, etc., or provided with a carbide layer. Despite a heat treatment of the joint components and / or the formation of a carbide layer on the joint surfaces, wear problems and wear-related elongation occur, especially when used as timing chains in an internal combustion engine, which reduce the reliability of the engine.

With the advancing technical development, the demands on the wear resistance of link chains are also increasing. In the automotive sector in particular, the ongoing innovation and competitive pressure lead to a constant need for improvement and thus to a necessary adjustment of the wear resistance. In particular with regard to the high number of items that are customary in the automotive industry, there is also the need to replace complex solutions to the problem of wear with inexpensive concepts.
The present invention is therefore based on the object of an articulated chain with good Provide wear properties with the lowest possible manufacturing costs.
This object is achieved by an articulated chain according to
With the solution according to the invention, a joint chain is provided for the first time in which a hard material layer applied in a PVD process is applied directly to the core of the joint pin or the non-tempered surface of the pin and / or the joint sleeve made of high-carbon steel. Since the PVD hard material layer is applied directly to the base material of the hinge pin or the hinge sleeve without prior tempering or coating, the manufacture of the articulated chain according to the invention with comparable wear-resistant chains is more cost-effective with simultaneously improved wear resistance. High-carbon steels with a carbon content between 0.4% by weight and 1.2% by weight have good tempering resistance, so that despite coating temperatures of 350 ° to 450 ° C and a coating time of up to 4 hours for the application of the Hard material layer in a PVD process, the hinge pin or the hinge sleeve continue to have a relatively high core hardness, which is why no additional surface hardening of the bolt / joint sleeve is necessary before the PVD coating. In addition to the high carbon content, the steel used as the base material can contain other alloying elements, in particular carbide formers such as chromium, vanadium or molybdenum, the addition of carbide formers further increasing the tempering resistance of the steel.
The PVD (Physical Vapur Deposition) coating deposits a hard, thin metallic or ceramic layer on the hinge pin and / or the hinge sleeve made of high-carbon steel, which has great abrasion and wear resistance, great hardness and temperature resistance, and low friction as well has good chemical properties and a low tendency to stick. In addition to improving the wear resistance, the PVD hard material layer also increases the corrosion resistance, which is particularly advantageous compared to the corrosive components of the motor oil when used in an internal combustion engine.
Carbon-containing steels with a carbon content between 0.5% by weight and 1.0% by weight, for example a 100 Cr6, 59 CrV4, or C60 steel, can be used particularly well as the base material for the hinge pin and / or the Joint sleeve be suitable, since these steels have sufficient strength and tempering resistance to be particularly suitable for a coating with a PVD hard material layer, and at the same time are not too brittle to be used in a chain joint.
Titan, Chrom, Wolfram, Zirkonium, etc., in Frage. The PVD hard material layer of the hinge pin and / or the hinge sleeve can consist of both metallic hard materials and non-metallic hard materials. All carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides, borides and silzides of the transition metals are used as metallic hard materials, e.g. Titanium, chromium, tungsten, zirconium, etc., in question. The relatively small atoms of carbon, nitrogen or boron are deposited on the interstitial spaces of the metal, so that the typical metallic properties remain despite the close atomic packing. As non-metallic hard materials, for example, diamond and DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) as well as corundum, boron carbide, cubic boron nitride, silicon carbide or aluminum nitride are possible.
For the direct coating of the surfaces of hinge pins and / or hinge sleeves made of high-carbon steel, metallic nitride formers in particular have proven to be positive, in particular chromium nitride (CrN). It is therefore advantageous if the PVD hard material layer is a layer based on chromium nitride, with the stoichiometric composition being variable. Chromium ensures a smooth transition from steel via a thin adhesion promoter layer to the actual wear-protecting surface layer of the PVD hard material layer, which means that the necessary layer thickness can be kept small and the coating times short. Compared to other metallic and non-metallic hard materials, chromium nitride is readily available from different suppliers and can therefore be procured relatively inexpensively. In addition, chromium nitride can be processed relatively easily in a PVD coating system and, with good adhesion to the substrate, produces a thin PVD hard material layer with high wear resistance. The chromium nitride is applied to the surface of the joint pins and / or joint sleeves at process temperatures between 380 ° and 420 ° C.
Compared to conventional wear protection layers, when using a PVD hard material layer in a link chain according to the invention, it is sufficient if the PVD hard material layer on the joint surface of the joint bolt and / or the joint sleeve is between 1 and 10 µm, in particular between 1 and 5 µm, preferably between 2 and 4 µm. Despite this small layer thickness, these PVD hard material layers on the joint surface of the joint bolt and / or the joint sleeve enable good corrosive protection and good wear resistance. It is sufficient if instead of the joint surface of the joint pin or joint sleeve, ie the cylindrical surface of the joint pin or the inner cylindrical surface of the joint sleeve, only the area of the bearing surface, ie the contact area between the joint pin and the joint sleeve, is provided with the PVD hard material layer. The adhesive properties, in particular metallic PVD hard material coatings, allow only the area actually required to be coated without the risk of the PVD hard material layer flaking off in the transition area between the uncoated and coated surface. This makes it possible for the joining area of the hinge pins to the link plates to be made without coating, so that the problem of residual dirt in the manufacture of the link chains can be reduced.
The PVD hard material layer is applied to the bearing surface of the pivot pin and / or the joint sleeve in a continuous PVD process. Compared to batch processes, continuous coating processes generally have the advantage of higher throughput and better use of resources. When coating chain joint components, there is an additional advantage that the components are only subject to the high process temperatures during the coating process itself, so that the base material of the joint pins and / or joint sleeves is not unnecessarily left on.
One variant provides that the PVD hard material layer is designed in multiple layers in order to adapt the PVD hard material layer to extreme loads or special process conditions.
Conventional sputtering processes or an arc evaporation (Are process) are particularly suitable as PVD coating processes. In the Are process, a target material (e.g. chromium) is sublimated directly into the gas phase by an arc spot and directed to the substrate by a strong electron flow to the wall of the vacuum chamber, on which the vaporized metal ions are then deposited. With the Are process, high deposition rates can be achieved with good layer adhesion. In contrast, sputtering generates a self-stabilizing plasma from a cathode, which contains metal atoms and metal electrons that are deposited on the substrate. Compared to the Are process, however, both the degree of ionization of the coating material and the coating space and the coating rate are lower in sputtering. However, modern sputtering processes can compensate for some of these disadvantages. For example, the HPPMS method (High Power Pulse Magnetron Sputtering) enables extremely strong ionization of layer metal atoms with the help of short pulses, which results in a stronger implantation effect of the hard material layer in the substrate and better layer adhesion.
The hinge pin provided with a PVD hard material layer and / or the hinge sleeve provided with a PVD hard material layer preferably has a core hardness of 400 to 700 HV10, in particular a core hardness of 500 to 600 HV10. A sufficient core hardness of the base material prevents the PVD hard material layer from peeling off.
The PVD hard material layer can advantageously have a hardness of 1,500 to 2,500 HV10, in particular a hardness of 1,800 to 2,300 HV10. With such a high surface hardness, in addition to other advantages, the wear resistance can also be increased compared to conventional wear-resistant hinge pins.
With a very thin PVD hard material layer applied in a PVD process, the articulated chain according to the invention enables a low-wear, cost-effective articulated chain that can be used in many areas without tempering or otherwise coating the base material. Therefore, the articulated chain according to the invention can be designed both as a sleeve chain, but also as a roller chain, tooth chain or leaf chain. Thanks to its great hardness, toughness, elasticity and corrosion resistance, the PVD hard material coating of the hinge pin and / or the joint sleeve, which consists in particular of chromium nitride, even provides increased wear protection compared to other known wear coatings, which surprisingly results from the correct combination of a PVD hard material layer with temper-resistant, high carbon steels results.
