Description
The invention relates to an energy management system and a method therefor, in particular for a motor vehicle with different power consumers, wherein the system and the method allow a multi-stage shutdown of these power consumers.
After switching off an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, the motor vehicle is normally powered only by its accumulator (hereinafter also referred to as a battery) with electrical energy. The after a few hours, days or weeks remaining charge state of the battery must be sufficient at least still to start the engine. For this purpose, the consumption of electrical energy after parking the vehicle must be reduced to a minimum, without reducing comfort functions, such as interior lighting, parking lights, etc. flat rate in their power consumption.
A conventional solution to the above-mentioned problem is to either limit the usability of a variety of comfort functions in time or to prevent them altogether by permanent disconnection from the battery. The same applies to the control units controlling these functions. However, as these controllers are permanently on standby, these controllers also consume power without actually performing any function.
Another possibility already known is to use control devices that are not permanently powered. Only after a wake-up command from the outside, for example, a processor or additional power driver supplied with energy. In practice, however, it often happens that the control units erroneously receive wake-up signals (errors in hardware or software, unspecified exceptional situations, etc.) or that a fault in hardware or software prevents shutdown of the power supply. In such a situation, the power consumption may be high, but a shutdown may not be possible because the error is not diagnosable at this time.
Also known is the ability to turn off control devices or sub-electrical systems depending on the battery condition. For example, for a given battery condition, low priority functions are disabled rather than high priority functions. However, this presupposes that the control units actually receive these signals for switching off certain functions.

The object of the invention is to provide a system that ensures that certain functions of a controller can be turned off despite a hardware or software error of the controller, and a method thereof.
The solution of the problem set in relation to the system can be found in the
According to the invention, the energy management system includes a battery that powers a controller. A battery monitor device is coupled to the battery to determine a state of charge of the battery. In response to the determined state of charge of the battery, a quiescent current manager sends an instruction to the controller to control a consumer connected to the controller. In response to the instruction from the quiescent current manager, the controller sends a feedback indicating a state of the controller. This feedback indicates, for example, that the control unit has correctly received the instruction, or informs about a power demand currently required by the control unit.
The quiescent current manager is able to send a reset signal to the controller to reset the software of the controller when, for example, within a predetermined time period, no feedback is received from the controller.
According to a further development of the invention, specifically different functions with different priorities of a control device are instructed by the quiescent current manager to control respective consumers. For example, the instruction sent from the quiescent current manager to the controller includes activating or deactivating a particular function having a particular priority.
According to the invention, a multi-level shutdown concept is possible if the controller does not return a response in response to an instruction sent from the quiescent current manager. Specifically, this means that if after sending an instruction to the controller receives no feedback from this, for example, the instruction is sent again. If the quiescent current manager still receives no feedback from the controller, the quiescent current manager sends a software reset signal to the controller to reinitialize its software. Then the quiescent current manager tries again to send the instruction to the control unit. If the quiescent manager still receives no feedback from the controller, it performs a hardware reset by briefly disconnecting the controller from the battery. If the quiescent current manager receives no feedback even after a hardware reset has been carried out by the control unit, the quiescent current manager triggers a final disconnection of the control unit from the on-board network, thereby ensuring that no unnecessary power is consumed by this control unit without a function being performed.
According to the invention, it is ensured that the control units have actually received and understood the instructions from the quiescent current manager. If one of the control units is in an endless loop, for example, the function of the control unit can be restored by a reset. If the control unit does not respond even after a reset, it will be permanently disconnected from the vehicle electrical system (battery). This multi-stage shutdown concept according to the invention guarantees that functions of the high priority controllers will be maintained as long as possible as the battery state of charge decreases.
