Description
The present invention relates to a tool substrate with a boron-containing layer system, which contains at least one boron carbide, one BCN layer, which contains boron, carbon and nitrogen and does not have to be single-phase, and a carbon-modified cubic boron nitride layer, the method for the production of the layer system and the use of the tool substrate. In the following, the boron carbide is also abbreviated by BC, the B-C-N layer by B-C-N, and the cubic boron nitride by c-BN.
Boron-containing layer systems are used in particular for the representation of hard material layers for the reduction of wear, friction, corrosion and for material processing. Here, the cubic boron nitride c-BN is a promising material for potential applications due to its extreme hardness (which is surpassed only by diamond) and other outstanding properties, such as the high temperature resistance even in air.
Phys. Let., 74 (1999) 7; Mirkarimri et al., Journal of Applied Physics 82 (4) 1997 p. 1617; Matsumota et al., Japanese Journal of Applied Physics Vol. 39 (2000) pp L422-444).Boron-containing layer systems are already known from the prior art. Thus, c-BN layers can be produced with many PVD and PACVD techniques. Thicker layers are documented here only by a few publications, for example Barth et al., Suf. & Coat. Technol. 92 (1997) 96-103 and often only at higher temperatures and at low rates (for example, Litvinov et al., Appl. Phys. Let., 74 (1999) 7; Mirkarimri et al., Journal of Applied Physics 82 (4) 1997, pp. 1617; Matsumota et al., Japanese Journal of Applied Physics vol. 39 (2000) pp L422-444).

In a further advantageous embodiment, one of the layer systems described hitherto is on or on a hard material layer system consisting of at least one layer and / or on or on a metallic layer system consisting of at least one layer and / or on or on a ceramic layer system consisting of at least one layer and or on or on a mixed ceramic layer system consisting of at least one layer (a layer system comprising an oxidic and a metallic component, cermet layer) or as an adhesive, intermediate, top or bottom layer with at least one of said layer systems (hard material layer systems, metallic Layer system, ceramic layer system, mixed ceramic layer system) combined. The metallic layer system advantageously contains Ti and / or Cr.
In particular, it is advantageous to arrange one of the layer systems described above on or on tool or component substrates, in particular in the form of carbide indexable inserts, ceramics, cermet layers, composite materials, HSS, steels (for example for automotive components), glasses or forming or stamping tools ,
The proposed layer system according to the invention, which consists of a boron carbide, a BCN and a carbon-modified cubic boron nitride c-BN-containing layer or of a carbon-stabilized c-BN layer, is thus realized by certain deposition conditions a decisive and advantageous role of the carbon in the layer systems , The layer system is produced, for example, in a PVD or PVD hybrid process. By means of special deposition conditions or by a corresponding sequence of deposition conditions, the carbon can be distributed or arranged in the layers and modified (hybridization and bonds) in such a way that it has a stabilizing effect on the layer system and each of the individual layers. So ensures the carbon z. At the c-BN grain boundaries, where normally sp 2 bonds typical of h-BN dominate, through bonds to this BN network for a stable, less sensitive BCN region or for an additional stabilizing carbon phase.
The stabilization is based here on a mechanical (the mechanical properties of BCN are better than hexagonal boron nitride h-BN) and a structural component (the ripple or the extent of the transition region to the c-BN). The essential aspect of the present layer systems is therefore a modification of the carbon by varying the coating process so that the carbon takes on a triple stabilizing role both in the BC layer and in the BCN layer and in particular in the c-BN layer. In contrast to known layer systems, carbon is thus also contained in the c-BN phase and has here the layer (ie the c-BN crystallites and the grain boundaries or the Limits of the grown c-BN columns) stabilizing function (h-BN, which is also usually present in the c-BN layer, for example, is mechanically and highly sensitive to moisture). The carbon present in all single layers is absolutely necessary as an essential element of stabilization in all layers. The carbon is thus the essential element connecting the individual components of the layer system. In addition to the mechanical reinforcement of the layer system, the carbon thus also provides structural reinforcement, namely the extended transition region to the c-BN (waviness region).
In this case, a layer system according to the invention is produced according to the methods described below: First, a boron carbide layer (first layer) which can be deposited in a bias voltage range of about 0 to 300 V is produced. Typical target outputs in the production of the boron carbide layer are about 500 to 10,000 W. The pressure range is approximately in the range of 0.1 to 10 Pa. For example, argon can be used as the sputtering gas. Subsequently, the deposition of a B-C-N gradient layer (second layer) takes place in that the nitrogen content in the sputtering gas is gradually increased. This increase can be completed at a nitrogen content of about 5% to 100% of the sputtering gas. Under the sputtering atmosphere with about 5% to 100% nitrogen content then the c-BN nucleation occurs. Typical nitrogen contents in the sputtering gas are about 8% to 20% for this purpose. The carbon is the stabilizing element in this layer.
It is deposited in such a way that the carbon content in the first layer is, for example, 10 to 30 at%, that in the second layer is, for example, 5 to 20 at% and the carbon content in the third layer is, for example, 2 to 15 at%.
Daher liegen die typischen c-BN-Volumenanteile im Bereich zwischen den genannten 60 bis 90 Gew.-%.After nucleation or the formation of the c-BN nuclei, these nuclei grow on further sputter deposition and finally a layer containing c-BN (the growth layer) is formed. Thus, from the moment of nucleation, a layer with very high proportions of the c-BN phase grows (the c-BN content is about 50 to 95% by weight, in particular about 60 to 90% by weight). % or 60 to 90% by volume, the remainder of the layer consists of h-BN or BCN (grain boundaries, etc.)). In principle, the c-BN content should be as high as possible. However, due to the nanocrystalline structure of the c-BN layer, a high grain boundary fraction in the volume can not be avoided. Therefore, the typical c-BN volume fractions range between the mentioned 60 to 90 wt .-%.
The nucleation of the c-BN nuclei takes place abruptly or the said c-BN concentration is reached abruptly, the BCN gradient layer generates a temporal and spatial fluctuation of the nucleation, which leads to an increased ripple of the nucleation zone and thus to an extended range the nucleation leads. Extended does not mean a slow increase in the c-BN content or the c-BN content, so there is no arbitrary distribution of the c-BN in the layer at which the c-BN content or content slowly increases but there is a nucleation, from which a nanocrystalline stem-shaped growth occurs and from which the c-BN content remains constant. The c-BN phase is essential to the invention stabilized by the carbon. The c-BN growth layer can also be deposited under slightly different conditions for nucleation. Typical negative Biasspannungswerte here are, for example, 100 to 500 V, more preferably 200 V. The growth layer is also referred to as a third layer.
The c-BN nucleation and the c-BN growth occur under bombardment of ions with energies in the range of 200 eV. The exact value of the ion energy required for nucleation or growth also depends on the ion current density at the substrate. The general rule here is that with increasing ion current density at the substrate, the ion energy necessary for c-BN nucleation or for c-BN growth decreases.
In the process of c-BN nucleation and c-BN growth, further techniques or process steps for minimizing the layer intrinsic stress can be employed. For example, continuous or sequential ion bombardment with ions in the energy range of about 1000 to 10000 eV, for example, continuous or sequential heating to temperatures in the range of about 600 to 1200 ° C, or also, for example, the addition of chemical components to the sputtering atmosphere, such as BF 3 or BCl 3 in concentrations up to about 10% at the sputtering atmosphere. For the nucleation or growth of c-BN and the additional distribution of the carbon as a stabilizing element (waviness range), precise process control and intensive ion bombardment with defined energy is necessary. Typical values here are ion densities greater than about 10 10 / cm 3 , ion current densities at the substrate of greater than about 1 mA / cm 2 and, as already mentioned, ion energies in the range of about 200 eV. The parameter window is dependent on the generation of the ion density. It is conceivable to generate the necessary high ion densities magnetic fields and additional activations of the plasma or ion and plasma sources.
The carbon in the layers is for all major improvements to the layer system responsible. For example, it enables the BCN layer in the first place. The gradual increase in the nitrogen content, also referred to as the ramp, in the BCN layer in turn makes it possible, by varying the duration of this ramp and / or a bias variation, to extend the range of the c-BN nucleation into a certain layer range and to influence this range , The ripple or irregularity of the transition to the c-BN, which is essential to the invention, follows from such a region.
- Slow interruption of c-BN growth by reducing the amount of nitrogen in the sputtering atmosphere (reverse process to nucleation). Thus, a reverse nucleation layer is quasi deposited, which then in turn leads into a BCN layer as already described.
- • The nitrogen content in the sputtering gas can then be increased again to achieve a renewed c-BN nucleation, or the nitrogen content can be further reduced until finally a BC layer is deposited again. In turn, a BCN layer and / or a layer system can be deposited on this BC layer as already described (multilayer coating system).
- The layer system or multilayer system described can then be combined with metal, hard material and / or tribological layers in all combinations and permutations. Thus, on a metal layer (for example of Ti or Cr), a hard material layer (for example made of TiN, TiAlN, Al 2 O 3 ) follow, on which in turn a described layer system or multilayer system is deposited. In a further variant, a corresponding metal layer can be deposited on a layer system or multilayer system executed as described, on this a corresponding hard material layer and on this in turn a corresponding layer system or multilayer system. The layer systems or multilayer systems described can be deposited or bonded in particular to tool and component substrates such as carbide indexable inserts, ceramics, cermets, composite materials, HSS, steels (eg for automotive components), forming tools or glasses become.
- • The structural component (waviness of the transition to the c-BN) leads to a larger transition region between the hexagonal BCN layer and the carbon-modified or carbon-containing c-BN layer. As a result, this layer transition can withstand the high intrinsic stresses of the c-BN. The ripple of the transition area to the c-BN or the enlargement of the transition area achieved thereby is the essential property for good adhesion of the layer system despite the high intrinsic stresses in the c-BN layer. As a result, the stresses within the layer that accompany c-BN nucleation in PVD techniques do not occur in a small area, but can be extended to a larger layer area (rough interface) and thus better compensated for by the layer. The modification of carbon in the c-BN layers described thus surprisingly leads to an improved adhesion of boron carbide to c-BN, so that multilayer layers (components BC, BCN and c-BN) can only be deposited firmly.
- • Compared to a carbon-free h-BN layer (as is otherwise necessary for c-BN nucleation), the BCN layer used has much better mechanical properties.
- • The layer systems have a high hardness and wear resistance with good tribological properties.
Possible applications of the layer systems described are in the area of component and tool coating, for example for tribologically highly stressed mechanical contacts (for example dry-running bearings or motor components) or, and here in particular, for cutting, cutting and forming tools. After diamond, c-BN is the second hardest of all known materials and, unlike diamond, is suitable for steel processing. Bulk material made from c-BN has a steadily growing share as a cutting material in industrial production. The measurements made on layers according to the invention yield comparable properties and thus show enormous potential. In the case of tools for machining but also in other applications, this layer system can be combined with other layers or layer systems and surface technology processes, such as plasma nitriding. The layer system is then an integral part of a surface treatment. For example, layer systems according to the invention can be used with tools conventional hard material layer systems (such as titanium aluminum nitride, etc.) or metallic layers (such as titanium, etc.) can be combined. This can be done as an adhesive, lower, intermediate or upper layer or layer system. The tools or components described can be made of metal, in particular steel or hard metal, but other materials such as ceramics or cermets are also conceivable.
