Description
This invention relates generally to a light emitting device. More particularly, the invention relates to a light emitting device having a collimator lens for use with an optical encoder module.
HINTERGRUND DER ERFINDUNGBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

There is an increasing demand in the market for more compact designs of encoders. Inclusion of a collimator lens mounted on the encoder housing limits the ability of manufacturers to design smaller encoders.
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG DER ERFINDUNGSUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a light-emitting device having a light-emitting element and a transparent medium encapsulating the light-emitting element, the transparent medium having a convex aspheric outer surface configured to receive light incident from the light-emitting element light-emitting element is to focus to a substantially collimated beam.
A light-emitting device according to the invention has the advantage that it provides a compact device for generating a collimated light beam. The light-emitting device may advantageously be used as an emitter in an optical Encoder module can be used, where the produced by the emitter collimated light beam has particular advantages. Moreover, the light-emitting device can be advantageously used in other applications where a compact source of collimated light is required.
Another advantage of the light-emitting device according to the invention is that light is collimated using a single refractive interface. Therefore, each light beam from the light-emitting element need only be refracted once before entering the collimated beam. The single optical interface results in a simpler beam path, which in turn results in a greater intensity of light being transmitted to the collimated beam.
Ideally, the convex aspherical outer surface is radially symmetric about an optical axis, and the light emitting element is positioned substantially on the optical axis of the convex aspheric outer surface.
In a preferred embodiment, the convex aspheric outer surface becomes the expression Are defined,
where R is the distance between a point on the aspherical surface and the optical axis, Z is the distance between a projection of the point on the optical axis and the intersection between the optical axis and the aspheric surface, m is selected from the group of integers which are greater than two, and r by the term
where n is the refractive index of the transparent medium and f is the distance between the light-emitting element and the intersection between the optical axis and the aspherical surface.
Preferably, the transparent encapsulating material is an epoxy compound. Further, the convex aspheric outer surface may be formed by molding the transparent encapsulating medium, for example, the epoxy compound. Thus, the light emitting device has the advantage that it can be manufactured in a precise manner using mass production techniques.
Suitably, the light emitting element is a light emitting diode.
In a preferred embodiment, the light emitting element is electrically coupled to a lead frame, the lead frame being partially encapsulated by the transparent medium.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided an optical encoder module for detecting light modulated by transmission through a movable member, the encoder module comprising: an emitter comprising a light-emitting element and a transparent medium containing the light-emitting element; Encapsulating element, the transparent medium having a convex aspherical outer surface configured to focus light received by the light emitting element to illuminate the movable member to a substantially collimated light beam; and a detector facing the emitter for detecting modulated light of the collimated beam transmitted through the movable member.
