Description
Verwendung finden.Process for the preparation of alkali titanates The present invention relates to a process for the production of alkali titanates from titanium-containing material, z. B. from rutile, ilmenite, and from ilmenite-rutile mixtures or titanium-containing slags or residues of the bauxite treatment. The process is carried out in a manner known per se carried out in such a way that a mixture consisting of titanium-containing material and alkalis is heated to temperatures between 500 and 850 °. In doing so, such connections obtained, which are used in the manufacture of pigments and the like.
For the production of titanium oxide, it is already known to use titanium-containing Material containing soda in the presence of additives such as calcium fluoride and reducing agents to be treated at 1000 °. The purpose here is first and foremost, an iron-free To win titanium oxide. The aggregate has the task of lowering the melting point, and is therefore present in an amount required for this. According to another The procedure is that titanium-containing sand is melted with calcium oxide and calcium chloride, wherein the calcium chloride is present in an amount from d0 to 50%.
In all of these cases calcium chloride or calcium fluoride are not to be seen as a catalyst, they are additives that are relatively large Amount available. The temperatures required are relatively high.
Alkaline titanates are also obtained in a known manner by that titanium oxide is reacted with sodium hydroxide at a relatively low temperature. The titanium oxide must be in freshly precipitated form, for example in a Form how to obtain si, e by hydrolysis of titanium-containing solutions.
This process cannot be used with mineral titanates, e.g. B. Rutile or similar artificial products, because the minerals were subject in the formation of the earth's cover a higher temperature, increasing its responsiveness is very reduced compared to sodium hydroxide. In addition, the titanium oxides in these minerals or artificial, similar products, such as slag and the like, are more or less contaminated with other metal oxides.
The manufacture of alkali titanates is when speaking of titanium minerals only possible at very high temperatures. That is not just excessive Consumption of energy result, but also the formation of titanate complexes which it is not always possible to subsequently isolate the titanium oxide.
The method according to the invention is one in which titanium-containing Material and alkalis are heated to temperatures between 500 and 850 °. That The essence of the invention is that you have a mixture, the small amounts - 1 to 5% - of an agent acting as a catalyst are added, heated, wherein the added agent is either a fluoride, bromide or iodide or else a Is the oxide of aluminum, silicon or magnesium.
According to this method, the disadvantages of the above-described, Known method switched off, nevertheless also from titanium mineral or a similar, artificial product is assumed. A formation of indecomposable complex titanates does not occur, and the temperature occurs at the same level one to a solution whose titanium dioxide content is higher than that according to the known Procedure. The yield based on the titanium content of the starting material is almost quantitative. The titanium content of the by-product slag is to neglect.
If substances which act as catalysts are present during the heat treatment, a precisely defined titanate is obtained at least in the range of 95 to 98%. The additives acting as catalysts are expediently present in amounts of 0.1 to namely 5%. The starting material itself, the reactants, are used in those stoichiometric proportions which correspond to the desired end product. The heat treatment is carried out between 500 and 850 °, depending on the type of starting materials for 1 to -4 hours: Example 1 To obtain sodium titanate of the composition Nag Ti 03, in which the ratio between Ti 02 and Na20 = 1: 1 is, a mixture of 100 parts of mineral rutile (with a Ti 0 , content of 95%) and 133 parts of neutral anhydrous sodium carbonate, to which 2 parts of sodium bromide are added as a catalyst, heated to a temperature of 820 to 830 ° for 2 hours. Example 2 To obtain a sodium titanate with the composition Na. Ti3 O "whose molecular ratio Ti 02: Nag O is 3: 1 , a mixture of 100 parts of ilmenite (with a content of about 50% Ti 02) and 23 parts of neutral anhydrous sodium carbonate, which contains 5 parts of aluminum oxide (A1203 The treatment temperature is between 500 ° and 850 ° C. The reaction is complete after 2 to 4 hours.
The weight loss of the treated mixture corresponds to the leakage of carbon oxide if a carbonate is used as the alkaline mixture component. The reaction is over when all of the carbon dioxide is in the form of carbonates is initially present, has escaped. The end product is easily friable and can be pounded without difficulty to put on one for later use required degree of fineness to be brought.
It should be noted that impurities present in the titanium-containing material such as chromium, vanadium, niobium, can be converted into chromates, vanadates, niobates and the like and can be removed by simply washing out the end product.
