Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a transition metal carbide and / or nitride-containing catalyst, a process for the same Manufacturing and its use.
In connection with the synthesis of aromatic nitriles by Ammond dehydration of aldehydes has been shown in the past that supported molybdenum nitrides are very good catalyst systems represent (see. DE-OS 196 20 815). Methods for Ammond dehydrogenation, in which alcohols are used as starting materials (EP-PS 038 507).
Copper contacts, on the one hand, and γ-Mo 2 N, on the other hand, are used as catalysts, the corresponding aldehyde first being formed by dehydrogenation, which is then converted to the respective nitrile with ammonia and by further dehydrogenation.
The dehydration of an imine shows certain similarities to that Dehydration of alcohols because, like alcohol, it is about Electron pairs, which imin coordination to Allow catalyst surface. Furthermore, the two own eliminating hydrogen atoms clearly different pK values.
In model systems for the investigation of suitable catalysts, the conversion of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde is usually used as the simplest dehydrogenation reaction on an aromatic system, the transfer of this model system to substituted benzaldehydes being of great economic interest. To date, benzaldehyde has been prepared by hydrolysis of benzal chloride in basic solution, although in addition to the high costs for benzal chloride, the hydrochloric acid formed, which has to be trapped by Ca (OH) 2 or NaHCO 3 , is a major disadvantage.
The oxidation of toluene in the gas or liquid phase is also widespread. With this process, however, it can easily form benzoic acid come through overoxidation.
In industrial applications, dehydrations are commonly used Temperatures between 250 and 450 ° C as well as at atmospheric pressure So-called gas phase dehydrogenations carried out, the supply of Educts are gaseous and the reaction is then carried out on a solid catalyst takes place. Dehydrations with liquid educts are less common then reduced pressure or in an inert gas stream to the corresponding one Influencing the equilibrium constant carried out.
Copper has established itself as a catalyst for the dehydrogenation of alcohols due to its high selectivity. Cr 2 O 3 , MgO, ZnO and similar oxides with low dehydration activity are used as structural promoters, on the one hand to increase the selectivity and on the other hand to stabilize the high dispersion of the copper. Alkali and alkaline earth metals, such as. As sodium or barium, can further suppress the formation of alkenes by water elimination.
Copper catalysts are mostly coprecipitated from the water-soluble salts, although the Sintering of the copper surface causes problems. Already at Temperatures of 300 to 400 ° C occur in the catalyst bed within a short time to a noticeable loss of activity, which is why the Temperature carefully adjusted during dehydration on copper contacts must become. Of far less importance than Dehydrogenation catalysts are silver or zinc contacts.
B. ZnO-Cr2O3 eingesetzt. Oxide catalysts are also widespread, but in addition to dehydrogenation, depending on their Lewis acidity, they also catalyze dehydration. The ratio of the two reactions depends largely on the production conditions and the purity of the oxides. Through targeted doping, it is possible to influence the reactivity in a targeted manner, in particular small amounts of a basic oxide, such as. B. Na 2 O, can increase the selectivity of the catalyst. In industrial practice, zinc oxide (ZnO) and mixed oxides such as z. B. ZnO-Cr 2 O 3 used.
The catalytic dehydrogenation of alcohols has so far not been broad Application in industry, since the majority of the process available products such. B. formaldehyde from methanol, acetaldehyde from ethanol, acetone from isopropanol and cyclohexanone from cyclohexanol, are also accessible through other syntheses.
From the two German patent applications DE 198 14 080 and DE 199 32 362 are catalysts for the dehydrogenation of in particular Ethylbenzene known to styrene, which in addition to iron and potassium as essential Component of tungsten and molybdenum compounds as well as a Contain magnesium and cerium compound and in particular Tungsten and molybdenum are used as oxides.
Nach G. Hägg [Z. Phys. Chem. According to G. Hägg [Z. Phys. Chem. 1931, 12, 33], the carbides and nitrides of the transition metals, such as. B. di tungsten nitride W 2 N or tungsten carbide WC, the class of interstitial compounds or inclusion compounds. The stoichiometry of the intercalation compounds is not determined by the metal valence, but by the number of lattice gaps per metal atom. In the transition metals, the heteroatoms occupy the octahedral gaps within the spherical packing, which leads to an increase in the metal-metal atomic spacing in the crystal packing and a narrowing of the metal d-band with an increase in the occupancy density. Depending on the stoichiometry and the type of interstitial atoms, this results in a modification of the electrical, magnetic, mechanical and adsorptive properties. The electronic structure of the transition metal carbides and nitrides determines, among other things, the extraordinary properties of this class of compounds and, in particular, their ability to catalyze a series of reactions which can usually only be carried out using the considerably more expensive noble metal catalysts.
These similarities of the nitrides and carbides to the transition metals The 10th group were first compared by Levy and Boudart in 1973 of the reactivities of tungsten carbide and platinum. however So far there are no systematic studies, some of them Relationship between chemical, geometric and electronic Structure and catalytic activity of interstitial Transition metal carbides and nitrides.
Known from the prior art has for the present Invention set the task of a transition metal carbide and / or to develop nitride-containing catalyst, with which in particular the Dehydration of alcohols in the gas phase with high levels at the same time Sales and great selectivity is possible. The new catalyst system should also have the greatest possible stamina in practice show and also allow the shortest possible dwell times at the contact.

It also showed be that the new catalysts for both dehydration primary and secondary as well as aromatic alcohols ideally suited are. The sum of these positive results could not have been predicted.
Within the scope of the invention there is in particular a mixing ratio between component I and component II proved to be favorable, the 1.0 to 5.0: 1 and particularly preferably 3.0 to 4.0: 1.
With regard to the second catalyst component essential to the invention, preference is given to catalysts which have at least one of the series WC, W 2 C, WN, W 2 N, Mo 2 N and VN as transition metal compound II, the proportions by mass of the transition metal component II being based on the total catalyst mass, from 5 to 40% have shown to be particularly favorable.

In addition to the catalysts, the present invention also claims Process for their production.
For this purpose, an aqueous suspension of the transition metal compound M (b) with an aqueous solution of a salt, such as. B. sulfate, chloride, nitrate or acetate, the metal component M (a) . Then, by adding an aqueous solution of Na 2 CO 3 or K 2 CO 3 , which should be carried out with vigorous stirring, precipitation which is as rapid and slow as possible is brought about, as a result of which the transition metal compound M (b) is homogeneously distributed in the precipitate. The precipitate thus obtained is then filtered off and washed with distilled water until none of the salt ions can be detected, and is then dried at 80 to 120 ° C., for which 2 to 8 hours are sufficient. The process further provides for the precipitate to be calcined at temperatures between 300 and 500 ° C. for 2 to 4 hours and for the product to be shaped.
This shape, according to a preferred embodiment, too can be carried out before the calcination step should be under certain circumstances within the scope of the present invention Add at least one pelletizing aid, such as. B. graphite powder, Starch powder or stearates, which are preferably in proportions of 1 to 5 wt .-% are added.
Alternatively, it is also possible to use the basic oxide matrix I, such as, for. B. V 2 O 5 or Al 2 O 3 with the carbidic or nitridic transition metals to mix and form directly, in which case - as in the case of the suspensions described - the component III is admixed dry again.
The shaping is usually done using known methods With the help of a press at 2 to 4 bar pressure, mainly pellets be preserved.
In the context of the present invention, they are preferably based on this Claimed catalysts for gas phase Dehydration of primary and secondary alcohols used and especially for the gas phase dehydrogenation of aromatic alcohols, with very particular preference for the dehydrogenation of benzyl alcohol Benzaldehyde is provided.
In summary it can be stated that with the help of the invention Catalysts containing transition metal carbides and / or nitrides especially gas phase dehydrogenation of alcohols that can be achieved with great stamina and short dwell times as well as high selectivity of the educts with great selectivity.
These advantages of the present invention are demonstrated by the following examples are illustrated.
The following catalysis examples were carried out in a reactor system shown in Fig. 1.
The dehydrogenation apparatus consisted of a tubular reactor (Rr) with an inner diameter of 100 mm and a maximum gas throughput of 8 Nm 3 / h and a glass spigot bottom located at the lower end of the reactor, which formed the end of the reactor. The catalyst bed could be placed directly on this floor. The entire reactor was heated, the heating output being controllable by an electronic temperature controller (Tr2).
Immediately in front of the reactor was the electrically heated U-shaped one Evaporator (V). The carrier gas nitrogen was supplied from above; the educt was removed from the side using a double piston pump (Kp) Storage vessel (Vg) metered in. Through the large volume evaporator the carrier gas is heated and so rapid and complete evaporation of the educt. The temperature became independent of the reactor set by a temperature controller (Tr1) and was, for example, in the case Benzyl alcohol as starting material approx. 240 ° C. The regulation of the volume flow was carried out at or with flow velocities below 100 L / h two calibrated rotimeters (R1 / R2), optionally also instead of nitrogen Compressed air could be used (rotameter R1). The isolation of the Catalysis products took place immediately after the reactor through a intensive cooling of the gas flow through a large volume Intensive cooler (Ik) to -15 ° C. The products and the unreacted starting material were then as complete as possible with a cold trap (Kf) at around -30 ° C isolated, the gas is then cooled to -15 ° C Snake cooler (Sk) passed and after a gas wash (Gw) with derived from iced acetone. Cooling the system to -15 ° C was carried out by a cryostat (Kt) with a pump.
2 Teilen WN bzw. 3 Teilen VN in ebenfalls je 30 Teilen Wasser bereitet. To prepare the ZnO catalysts, solutions made from 15 parts of ZnSO 4 (or optionally 12.2 parts of ZnCl 2 or 19.3 parts of Zn (NO 3 ) 2 ) and 6.6 parts of Na 2 CO 3 (or optionally 11.5 parts K 2 CO 3 in then 45 parts of water) in 30 parts of water. At the same time, suspensions of 1 part WC or 2 parts WN or 3 parts VN were also prepared in 30 parts water. The zinc solutions were first added to the suspensions and then the solutions of sodium carbonate or potassium carbonate were added with vigorous stirring, whereupon in each case there was an immediate stagnant precipitate.
The precipitate was filtered off, washed with distilled water until no more sulfate, chloride or nitrate ions could be detected and then in the drying cabinet usually for about 6 hours at 100 ° C dried. The subsequent calcination was carried out over about 4 hours Temperatures of 400 ° C. The characterization of the so obtained Catalysts were carried out using X-ray powder diffractometry. The resulting powder was finally used in a press 3 bar pressure pellet molded.
Die Darstellung anderer erfindungsgemäßer Katalysatoren erfolgte in
analoger Weise. Die Vanadin- bzw. Aluminium-haltigen Katalysatoren
Pulvers hergestellt. Die Beimengungen der Alkali- bzw.
Erdalkalikomponenten wurden ebenfalls durch direktes Vermischen der
Pulverproben mit den Oxiden dargestellt.

The presentation of other catalysts according to the invention was carried out in an analogous manner. The vanadium or aluminum-containing catalysts were produced directly from the corresponding oxides by intimate mixing with a corresponding amount of the transition metal-containing powder. The additions of the alkali or alkaline earth components were also shown by directly mixing the powder samples with the oxides.
