Description
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of compounds having at least one tetrafluoroethylene bridge in the molecule. Molecules with this structural unit are of interest as intermediates for polymers, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Such compounds are particularly suitable as part of liquid crystals.
Liquid crystals have found wide application since about 30 years ago, the first commercially applicable liquid crystalline compounds were found. Known application areas are, for example, display displays for watches, calculators or telephones. Further fields of application are displays of portable computers or navigation systems as well as video applications and PC monitors. Especially for the latter applications, high demands are placed on switching times and the contrast of the images.
In order to be useful for commercial applications, the liquid crystalline molecules must have certain properties. In order to use devices with a liquid crystal display under different climatic conditions, the molecules must form a stable nematic phase over as large a temperature range as possible, which is in the range of room temperature. The compounds must therefore have a low melting point and a high clearing point.
In order to realize low switching times, the molecules must have a low rotational viscosity. For example, switching times of less than 16.7 ms are required for video applications. Furthermore, the liquid-crystalline molecules should have a high dielectric anisotropy, so that only low threshold voltages are required. This means a low energy consumption, so that for example in laptops smaller and thus lighter batteries can be used. For the design of the display, the birefringence properties of the molecules are also important, which influence the contrast and usable viewing angle.
In order to fulfill all these requirements at the same time, no pure substances are used, but mixtures, which usually comprise 5 to 15 different components. This means that the individual components must be compatible with each other, so for example, sufficiently dissolve into each other.
For modern active matrix displays, a high contrast of the images is desired. The liquid crystalline compounds must therefore have a high resistivity and a high voltage holding ratio.
Chem. USSR 1965 (35), S. 1616–1623.The preparation of these compounds has hitherto been carried out by coupling together two molecules having the structural unit -CCl 3 , which are substituted by the phenyl or vinyl radical mentioned, in a coupling reaction. In this case, the structural unit -CCl 2 -CCl 2 - is formed; the coupling generally occurs with the aid of copper and in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) under application of a high temperature. Subsequently, an exchange of the chlorine is carried out against fluorine atoms, wherein in general HF, SbF 3 and / or SbF 5 are used. This is described, for example, in J. Gen. Chem. USSR 1965 (35), pp. 1616-1623.
The disadvantage here is that for the fluorine-halogen exchange, a pressure reaction at high temperatures using toxic reagents is required; In addition, corrosion problems often occur.
The object of the present invention is to provide a process for the preparation of disubstituted tetrafluoroethylene derivatives which does not have the disadvantages of the previously known processes.
This object is achieved by a process for the preparation of disubstituted tetrafluoroethylene derivatives in which a dimeric by-product of bis (alkylthio) carbenium salts is fluorinated with a suitable fluorinating agent with elimination of the sulfur-containing groups and use of a suitable oxidizing agent. This reaction according to the invention will hereinafter be referred to as fluorodeulfuration.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the dimeric bis (alkylthio) -substituted hydrocarbon is prepared by reductive coupling of two corresponding bis (alkylthio) carbenium salts with the aid of an aprotic, in the reaction medium-soluble reducing agent such as tetrakisdimethylaminoethylene (TDAE) or tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) ,
The process according to the invention for the preparation of disubstituted tetrafluoroethylene derivatives (I) by fluorodesulfurization of dimeric bis (alkylthio) hydrocarbons (II) is reproduced in equation (1) below.
Gleichung (1) Equation (1)
Preferably, R 1 is an aromatic hydrocarbon of C 5 to C 10 , optionally containing one or more heteroatoms, or a vinyl group. When the aromatic hydrocarbon or vinyl group has one or more substituents, these are preferably selected from the group consisting of linear and branched, cyclic and acyclic, chiral and achiral, unsubstituted and C- or CF 3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen C 1 -C 12 -alkyl, C 1 -C 12 -alkoxy, C 1 -C 12 -oxyalkyl, C 2 -C 12 -alkenyl, C 2 -C 12 -alkenyloxy and C 3 -C 12 - Oxalkenylresten, where in these radicals also one or more CH 2 groups each independently by, unsubstituted or substituted with up to 2 fluorine atoms 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexylene, -O-, -S-, -CO- , -CO-O-, -O-CO- or -O-CO-O- can be replaced so that heteroatoms are not directly linked to one another, halogens, CN, SF 5 , N 3 and CF 3 .
In the case where the above-mentioned groups are cyclic, they have at least 3 carbon atoms.
Gegebenenfalls vorhandene Substituenten sind vorzugsweise ausgewählt aus der Gruppe bestehend aus Halogenen und Pseudohalogenen.R 2 and R 3 may in one embodiment each independently represent a substituent and are then selected from the group of linear and branched, cyclic and acyclic, saturated and unsaturated, aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons which may have one or more substituents. In this embodiment, it is preferred that R 2 and R 3 are independently selected from the group consisting of linear and branched, acyclic and cyclic, unsubstituted and substituted C 1 -C 20 alkyl groups. These may optionally contain one or more oxygen atoms in their chain. Optionally present substituents are preferably selected from the group consisting of halogens and pseudohalogens.
Dithiolanyliumsalze (fünfgliedriger Ring).Preferably, R 2 and R 3 form a (CH 2 ) n moiety with n = 2-5, which moiety may have one or more alkyl substituents and is linked to the atoms to which it is attached to a cyclic moiety. In particular, R 2 and R 3 form a (CH 2 ) n moiety with n = 2 or 3 or a -CH 2 -C (CH 3 ) 2 -CH 2 - group. Dithianylium salts (six-membered ring) or dithiolanylium salts (five-membered ring) are formed in these embodiments.
The fluorodesulfurization of the present invention is carried out by reacting the dimeric bis (alkylthio) -substituted hydrocarbon with a suitable fluorinating agent in the presence of a suitable oxidizing agent. Suitable fluorinating agents include HF, amine-HF complexes, - (HF-oligomer) complexes of the type R 4 N (H n + 1 F n ) with R = organic radical, preferably lower alkyl, compounds of the type R 2 NSF 3 such as ( MeOCH 2 CH 2 ) 2 NSF 3 , Et 2 NSF 3 (DAST), Me 2 NSF 3 , (N-morpholino) -SF 3 and (R 2 N) 2 SF 2 each with R = lower alkyl.
The fluorinating agent used is preferably HF, which has been complexed with an amine. Suitable amines are known to the person skilled in the art. Amines which are particularly suitable for complexing HF are trialkylamines, in particular triethylamine, pyridine, polyvinylpyridine and melamine.
Diese Oxidationsmittel sind dem Fachmann bekannt und umfassen Br2, IBr, IF5, ICl, Cl2, F2 (gegebenenfalls mit Inertgas verdünnt), N-Bromsuccinimid (NBS), N-Chlorsuccinimid (NCS), N-Iodsuccinimid (NIS), Dibromdimethylhydanthoin (DBH), SO2Cl2, und elektrophile Fluorierungsmittel wie beispielsweise N-Fluor-Sulfonimide, N-Fluor-Pyridiniumsalze, N-Fluorchinuclidiniumsalze (Selectfluor®), ClO3F, CF3OF und XeF2.The oxidizing agents used in one embodiment of the present invention are agents which are a source of active halogen atoms which may be present in monomeric form. These oxidants are known in the art and include Br 2 , IBr, IF 5 , ICl, Cl 2 , F 2 (optionally diluted with inert gas), N-bromosuccinimide (NBS), N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS), N-iodosuccinimide (NIS). , Dibromdimethylhydanthoin (DBH), SO 2 Cl 2, and electrophilic fluorinating agents such as N-fluoro-sulfonimides, N-fluoro-pyridinium salts, N-Fluorchinuclidiniumsalze (Selectfluor ®), ClO 3 F, CF 3 OF and XeF. 2
In another embodiment of the present invention, an oxidizing agent which does not release active halogen atoms is used. An example of such an oxidizing agent is nitrosylium salts, preferably NOBF 4 .
Oxidizing and fluorinating agents can be brought into contact with the reactant to be fluorinated simultaneously or successively. In the latter case, the product is preferably reacted first with the fluorinating agent, then with the oxidizing agent.
The fluorodesulfurization according to the invention is generally carried out in a suitable solvent such as halogenated hydrocarbons, nitriles and / or ethers. Preferably, acetonitrile, dichloromethane, trichloromethane, diethyl ether, THF, methyl tert-butyl ether and / or diglyme is used. The temperatures applied during the reaction are generally from -90 to 100 ° C, preferably from -75 to 30 ° C. After completion of the reaction is worked up as usual, for example by extraction and / or purification of the product on a silica gel column.
In a variant of the reaction according to the invention, which is applicable to compounds (I) where R 1 = optionally substituted aromatic, halogenation of the aromatic nucleus or linked with the tetrafluoroethylene bridge is carried out simultaneously with the fluorodeulfurization. This core halogenation is easiest if the aromatic to be halogenated is activated with an electron-rich group. Examples of suitable electron-rich substituents on the aromatic nucleus include alkoxy groups and aryloxy groups.
It is not necessary to separately add a halogenating agent. The desired halogenation can be carried out already with the oxidizing agent according to the invention, which is a source of active halogen atoms. It is only important that the oxidizing agent be present in a stoichiometrically sufficient amount to allow the desired oxidation and halogenation. This means that the oxidizing agent is present in excess of the stoichiometric amount necessary for oxidation. This excess is measured at the amount necessary for complete halogenation.
If necessary, another oxidizing agent can be added. It can also be used a mixture of different oxidizing agents.
Gegebenenfalls läßt sich eine gewünschte Halogenierung auch dadurch erreichen, daß Halogenierungsmittel eingesetzt werden, die ein hohes Redoxpotential aufweisen, beispielsweise Br2, DBH, NCS, IF5, Cl2, F2 oder elektrophile Fluorierungsmittel, beispielsweise N-Fluor-Pyridinumsalze, N-Fluor-Sulfonimide oder N-Fluorchinuclidiniumderivate (Selectfluor®).Depending on the reactivity of the aromatic nuclei to be halogenated, certain reaction conditions must be maintained in order to achieve halogenation. It is understood that reaction inert aromatic nuclei require harder reaction conditions than reactive aromatics. Optionally, a desired halogenation can also be achieved by using halogenating agents which have a high redox potential, for example Br 2 , DBH, NCS, IF 5 , Cl 2 , F 2 or electrophilic fluorinating agents, for example N-fluoropyridine salts, N-fluorophenyl fluoro-N-or sulfonimides Fluorchinuclidiniumderivate (Selectfluor ®).
The compounds obtainable by the reaction described above correspond to the formula in which X is selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, Br and I and R is an arbitrary hydrocarbon radical, are a further object of the invention.
Preferably, R is an optionally substituted aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon. In particular, R is a C 1 -C 20 alkyl group or a benzyl group.
Scand. 1986, B. 46, Seiten 373–380.The dimeric bis (alkylthio) substituted hydrocarbons (II) used according to the invention as starting materials are known per se. They are prepared by reductive coupling of the corresponding bis (alkylthio) carbenium salt (III), the dimerization taking place in the presence of a suitable reducing agent. The use of zinc as a reducing agent has been described, see Acta Chem. Scand. 1986, B. 46, pages 373-380.
In a preferred variant of the process according to the invention, the reductive coupling is carried out with a reducing agent which is soluble in the reaction medium. These are in particular tetrakisdimethylaminoethylene (TDAE) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF). The use of the liquid TDAE achieves a simpler, homogeneous reaction procedure and a considerably simplified work-up of the mixture obtained after the reaction compared with the use of zinc. The dimerization reaction is shown in Equation II below.
Gleichung (2) Equation (2)
Y ist ein dem Fachmann bekanntes Anion, vorzugsweise ein Halogenid oder Pseudohalogenid, eine gegebenenfalls fluorierte Alkylsulfonatgruppe, eine Trifluoracetatgruppe, BF4 –, PF6 –, ClO4 –, insbesondere eine Trifluormethylsulfonatgruppe.Y is an anion known to the person skilled in the art, preferably a halide or pseudohalide, an optionally fluorinated alkylsulfonate group, a trifluoroacetate group, BF 4 - , PF 6 - , ClO 4 - , in particular a trifluoromethylsulfonate group.
The dimerization of the bis (alkylthio) carbenium salt (III) according to the invention is likewise carried out in a suitable solvent, for example acetonitrile, dichloromethane, trichloromethane, dichloroethane, diethyl ether, THF, methyl tert-butyl ether and / or diglyme. Frequently, the same solvent is chosen for the inventive reductive coupling as for the subsequent fluorodesulfurization, since it is often advantageous not to isolate the product obtained after the dimerization and to perform the Fluorodesulfurierung in situ.
The temperatures at which the reductive coupling is carried out are from -80 to 100 ° C, preferably 0 to 40 ° C.
Chem.
