A gas sensor is proposed for determining gas components and / or concentrations of gas components in gas mixtures, in particular in exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, which has a measuring electrode (1, 10, 21) exposed to the gas mixture and a reference electrode (2, 11, 24), wherein the electrical current or the electrical voltage between the reference electrode (2, 11, 24) and measuring electrode (1, 10, 21) can be determined with a first measuring device (7) in a measuring operating state of the gas sensor. There is also a circuit (6, 28) for switching from the measuring operating state to a second operating state and one with the shell (5, 27) which, in the second operating state, connects the measuring electrode (1, 10, 21) with respect to the reference electrode (2, 11, 24) subjected to an electrical voltage.
Description
The invention relates to a gas sensor for the determination of gas components and / or concentrations of gas components in gas mixtures according to the preamble of the main claim.

When operating such sensors, the problem arises that the mixed oxides or metal oxides used are sensitive to reduction, and change in the presence of a reducing gas in their chemical structure and thus in their operation, which may eventually lead to failure of the sensor. In this respect, they are particularly suitable for the analysis of oxygen-rich, d. H. lean exhaust gases in internal combustion engines. Under a lean exhaust gas is understood in a known manner, an exhaust gas having a λ value> 1.
Although gas sensors based on metal oxides or mixed oxides are generally used in lean exhaust gases, it can not be ruled out or even expected that the gas sensor will at least temporarily also be exposed to a rich exhaust gas, i. H. is exposed to an exhaust gas with λ ≤ 1. Such, in particular short-term change from a lean exhaust gas to a rich exhaust gas occurs in many cases in gasoline direct injection engines in many cases.
Geeignete Mischoxide bzw.

Object of the present invention was to provide a gas sensor, which is not damaged by undesirable reduction reactions at the measuring electrode due to a particular short-term rich fat exhaust gas and is not impaired in its function.
Vorteile der ErfindungAdvantages of the invention
The gas sensor according to the invention has the advantage over the prior art that it is not damaged by an undesirable reduction reaction at the measuring electrode even when a sample gas or an exhaust gas having a λ value ≦ 1 occurs, or when a lean exhaust gas occurs again its function is impaired. In this respect, it is also suitable for use in short-term rich exhaust gases and thus in particular for use in the exhaust gas analysis of gasoline direct injection engines.
Advantageous developments of the invention will become apparent from the measures mentioned in the dependent claims.
It is also advantageous that the gas sensor according to the invention in conventional measuring operation, d. H. in the measurement mode with λ> 1, for gas analysis, first as usual between the measuring electrode and the gas mixture to be measured or a reference gas exposed reference electrode, a measurement signal in the form of an electric current or voltage is recorded, and that in the case that the gas mixture λ value ≦ 1, by the switch and the intended voltage source between the measuring electrode and the reference electrode, an electrical voltage is impressed, which is poled so that at the reference electrode is applied a sufficient negative potential, while at the measuring electrode, a correspondingly positive potential is applied (" protection mode ").
In this second operating state with λ ≦ 1, oxygen or water at the reference electrode is thus reduced to oxygen ions when using an oxygen ion-conducting solid electrolyte between the measuring electrode and the reference electrode, while due to the impressed electrical Voltage at the measuring electrode molecular oxygen develops. This oxygen evolution and the impressed positive potential lead to a total stabilization of the metal oxide or mixed oxide present there at the measuring electrode and prevent its reduction, for example to lower oxidation states.
The proposed gas sensor with a device for switching between measuring operating state and second operating state in the form of a "protective operation" to protect the measuring electrode from reduction can be used both in known two-electrode arrangements and in known three-electrode arrangements.
In a conventional two-electrode arrangement, the switching between measuring mode and second operating state preferably takes place when it can be estimated that rich or stoichiometric exhaust gas will occur.
In a three-electrode arrangement, this estimation is not necessary since there is always the possibility of measuring the specific λ value, so that, as a result of this measurement, a changeover between measuring operating state and second operating state, ie. H. Protection operation, can be done.
Incidentally, the measurement of the respective λ value preferably takes place, as usual, between the measuring electrode and a counterelectrode, which are separated from one another by an oxygen ion-conducting solid electrolyte.
