Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an alkanol-resistant catalyst material for electrochemical, selective oxygen reduction in easily dispersible Form consisting of nanoparticles in the form of predominantly crystalline structured carrier particles, the surfaces of which are bound by a surface Surface particles are modified, at least one in their composition Have transition metal element from the iron-platinum subgroup, on Process for making and using the catalyst material.
Catalysts are substances that interfere with the reaction mechanism, however not be consumed even by the reaction. The catalyzed reaction has a smaller activation energy than the uncatalyzed one. This increases the number of molecules that the activation energy required for the reaction possess, strongly, the reaction rate as a measure of the catalyst activity increases. In heterogeneous catalysis, reactions in Solutions accelerated by solid catalysts (contacts). The plays Surface quality of the catalyst plays an important role. A high The transition metals of iron-platinum have catalytic activity Group (8th subgroup), they are often classified as finely divided particles on one Carrier material applied. Your presence often does not only do one physical deposition of the reacting substances on the surface (Adsorption), but also a chemical activation of the adsorbed Particles. In addition to the catalyst activity, the catalyst selectivity is one important property of the catalysts. Often the same raw materials react to different products. The selectivity of the reaction process is achieved in that the catalyst only the reaction speed of oxygen to the desired product increases and thereby the creation of the other products is suppressed.
A main field of application of catalysts is electrochemical Cells and here in particular the innovative fuel cells. With the Emission-free fuel cells can convert electricity into electricity the chemical energy of a fuel oxidation reaction in electrical Energy efficiently and environmentally without the detour via heat production be generated in a friendly manner. The use of methanol from the group of Alkanols as a fuel with a high energy density enables operation of the Fuel cell in the low temperature range between 80 ° C and 120 ° C. The however, methanol crossover to the cathode taking place is not unproblematic. So far, the most common for the fuel cell cathode The catalyst material used is platinum, but it does not act selectively and tends to poisoning. Therefore and because of the high material costs for platinum becomes resistant to new, inexpensive and selectively effective catalysts materials wanted.
Dem Aufsatz "Thin Layer Semiconducting Cluster Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction" (Alonso-Vante et al., Journ. of the Electrochem. Soc., Vol. 138, No. 2, Febr. Aufsatz "Novel Low-Temperature Synthesis of Semiconducting Transition Metal Chalcogenide Electrocatalysts for Multielectron Charge Transfer: Molecular Oxygen Reduction" von O. Solorza-Feria et al., Electrochimica Acta, Vol. 39, No. 11/12, 1994, 1647-1653). The essay "Thin Layer Semiconducting Cluster Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction "(Alonso-Vante et al., Journ. Of the Electrochem. Soc., Vol. 138, No. 2, Feb. 1991, 639-640) it can be seen that semiconducting, mixed Cluster compounds with a chevrel phase structure are catalytically active at the reduction of molecular oxygen in an acid medium. Both Chevrel phases are octahedral metal clusters in a chalcogen or Chalcogen / halogen matrix embedded. The clusters are stoichiometric clearly determined and indicate by a three-dimensional periodic Linking chalcogens / halogens to a crystal structure. A compared to the catalytic activity of the chevrel clusters Efficacy shows similar chalcogen compounds with a molybdenum Share and a binary structure of amorphous regions and nanocrystalline Areas that are also stoichiometric (see article "Novel Low-Temperature Synthesis of Semiconducting Transition Metal Chalcogenide Electrocatalysts for Multielectron Charge Transfer: Molecular Oxygen Reduction "by O. Solorza-Feria et al., Electrochimica Acta, Vol. 39, No. 11/12, 1994, 1647-1653). The cluster compounds mentioned are in powder or thin-film mold used. An even more active cluster connection a transition metal and a chalcogen in colloidal form is used in the DE 196 44 628 A1. This is also a pure one stoichiometric compound with predominantly crystalline structure, which the known compounds is very similar.
Ruthenium-containing stoichiometric catalysts are also used in other areas of catalysis. For example, the preparation US Pat. No. 4,617,287 describes the preparation of a ruthenium carbonyl-cobalt carbonyl catalyst for catalysing the dealkoxyhydroxymethylation of aldehyde acetals. The preparation is carried out by synthesis of the carbonyls ruthenium dodeca carbonyl (Ru 3 (CO) 12 ) and dicobalt octacarbonyl (Co 2 (CO) 8 ) under increased pressure (3000 psi) at 150 ° C in the presence of synthesis gas in chlorobenzene solution. The result is a homogeneous, orange-colored product that can be regarded as a new, structurally single-phase metal carbonyl due to the IR spectra. For use in PEM fuel cells with good resistance to poisoning by carbon monoxide, DE 197 21 437 A1 describes a platinum-ruthenium catalyst for use at the anode, consisting of nanoparticles which are dispersed on a conductive support (forms of carbon, e.g. Soot, with a high surface area). Platinum and ruthenium do not form any alloys, but exist side by side in metallic, crystalline form. US Pat. No. 3,382,103 describes the use of ruthenium, rhodium or platinum as catalysts on the anode of a hydrazine fuel cell. In all of the examples mentioned, only single-phase crystalline catalysts with a stoichiometric composition of pure or alloyed crystalline metal particles and of crystalline powders of multinuclear (for example Ru-Co) metal carbonyls are described. An application of these crystalline catalysts as cathode materials for oxygen reduction in fuel cells is not provided in any publication.
Proceedings of the 11th Workshop on Quantum Solar Energy Conversion "Quantsol 99", 14.-19. The prior art on which the invention is based is described in the abstract "Photocatalysis on Surface Modified Nanostructure Materials" by N. Alonso-Vante et al (cf. Proceedings of the 11 th Workshop on Quantum Solar Energy Conversion "Quantsol 99", March 14-19, 1999, Switzerland) in the form of a brief overview. From this contribution, it can be seen that research for new materials in the field of photoinduced charge separation to improve the efficiency of the photocatalytic reaction has started in semiconducting nanoclusters on which noble metals such as platinum or gold have been deposited. Platinum catalysts have a high activity, but are not methanol-resistant when it comes to oxygen reduction. Due to the development of heterogeneous photocatalysis, semiconducting materials with nanostructures or nanoparticles came to the fore, in particular transition metal compounds with clusters in colloidal form. Such compounds have a very similar stoichiometry and crystal structure to the previous ones, but their catalytic activity is lower. However, they act selectively, so that they are particularly suitable for use on selective cathodes in methanol fuel cells. Transition metal clusters made of the transition metal ruthenium and the chalcogen selenium (Ru x Se y ) are also suitable, in the form of nanocrystalline surface particles with particle sizes of 3 nm, attached to the free surface of anatase titanium oxide (n-TiO 2 ) with a particle size of approximately 10 nm to become. The titanium oxide carrier particles assembled from a colloid to form a layer form a predominantly crystalline substrate. This structure has a catalytic effect on the photooxidation of organic compounds.
The catalytic activity derives from all the catalysts mentioned fully determined, stoichiometric compositions and from their predominantly crystalline structuring. Furthermore, to achieve a High catalytic activity comparable to platinum - an approach to As described, improvement of the catalytic ability is based on a Surface modification - always against the presence of a chalcogen ben. In most cases, this is selenium. However, this is toxic and polluting, as are most organic Solvents that are required in the corresponding synthetic procedures.
The primary object of the invention is therefore to be selective To be able to provide catalyst material based on the presence of toxic chalcogenides, especially selenium, as the main component in Catalyst completely or at least largely dispensed with. In doing so, based on the approach of a surface modification, the platinum Comparable high catalytic activity and easy producibility achieved become. Processes for producing the material according to the invention are said to be simple and technically feasible, but the environment is optimal spare.
According to the invention, the solution to this problem consists in an alkanol-resistant catalyst material for electrochemical, selective oxygen reduction in an easily dispersible form, consisting of nanoparticles, each of which is designed and constructed in two phases
From a crystalline core in the form of a metallic carrier particle, the in its composition at least one transition metal element Has sub-platinum iron group, and
- - aus einer katalytischen reaktiven Hüllschicht mit vorwiegend amorpher Struktur aus an die Oberfläche der metallischen Trägerpartikel chemisch gebundenen Oberflächenpartikeln, die vorwiegend aus funktionellen Über gangsmetallkomplexen aufgebaut sind, die in ihrer Zusammensetzung mit der Zusammensetzung des metallischen Trägerpartikels korrespondieren und deren Zentren ein- oder mehrkernig (rein oder gemischt) sowie deren Liganden rein oder gemischt aufgebaut sind.- from a catalytic reactive coating with predominantly amorphous Structure made of chemical on the surface of the metallic carrier particles bound surface particles, which mainly consist of functional over gear metal complexes are built up in their composition with correspond to the composition of the metallic carrier particle and their centers mononuclear or multinuclear (pure or mixed) and their Ligands are pure or mixed.
The catalyst material according to the invention is thus constructed in two phases. It consists of nanoparticles with a crystalline core (carrier particles) and an amorphous coating that wraps around the core like an ultra-thin film sets. The carrier particles are partially or completely coated. The The composition of the catalytically reactive nanoparticles does not follow stoichiometric laws. The catalyst material according to the invention is simple in its construction the core consists of carrier particles from one or more transition metal elements of the iron-platinum subgroup, whose suitability for catalyst materials is well known, and is Chalcogen-free. The functional complex compounds in the cladding layer are predominantly coordination connections between a coordination center and a ligand field made up of ions or molecules. They each point characteristics and reactions typical of the species. You can have different oxidation levels. Doing so with the term "functionally" the taking over of a function in the sense of a change of the Be understood. By the simple chemical measure one self-controlled complex formation on a matrix is thus with the catalyst material according to the invention a simple and harmless Material provided for electrocatalysis, which is an unexpected has high catalytic activity comparable to that of platinum.
The known good catalytic properties of the transition metals from the Sub-platinum iron group has already been mentioned above. That's why it is According to an embodiment of the invention, particularly advantageous if it is the transition metal element is ruthenium. However is for example, the use of palladium or rhodium is also conceivable. Ruthenium is a platinum group metal, relatively base, but inert to Mineral acids. There can be numerous complex compounds with a variety of oxidation levels. To make a metallic carrier particle According to this embodiment of the invention, ruthenium Complexes in the form of a catalytically active, amorphous surface layer educated.
The functional complexes can be formed with the participation of complex types such as carbonyl, carbide, cyanide or amine. In particular, however, the functional complexes corresponding to the transition metal - regardless of the ruthenium - are preferably complexes with a metal cluster or a carbidometal core with attached ligands in the form of carbonyls, carboxylates, cyanides or amines. All these types of complexes react preferentially with transition metals. The special position of the so-called "carbido transition metal complexes" or shortened "carbido metal complexes" should be emphasized. These are not intercalation carbides, but metal carbide centers with a real carbon bond, as they also occur in RuC or Fe 3 C. Most of the complex types in question contain carbon in one way or another, which forms a chemical bond with the complex core. Carbon is almost always present in the entire technology for electrochemical oxygen reduction, mainly as a flat or powdered carrier material. To assign it a meaning for the catalytic activity is therefore obvious. In the catalyst material according to the invention, the carbon is therefore assigned an active role as an involved element, which clearly emphasizes it compared to its previous, rather accidental and arbitrary presence. In connection with the ligand field, carbon (e.g. in the form of CO) causes a concentration of the d-electrons of the metal nucleus in a narrow energy band, so that the addition of a species to be reduced favors multi-electron transfer. This function also establishes the selectivity of the catalyst.
In contrast to DE 196 44 628 A1 already mentioned above, the a selenium-containing, homogeneous catalyst for oxygen reduction describes, the catalyst material according to the invention can completely be chalcogen free. However, the installation already has a minimal effect amount of a chalcogen (selenium, tellurium) in the nanoparticles significant improvement in catalytic activity. A further education of the The catalyst material according to the invention is therefore one with a Connection between the surface particles and the carrier particles via a chalcogen bridge and / or a chalcogen storage in the functional transition metal complexes of the surface particles. The one before described, characterizing the catalyst material according to the invention two-phase, d. H. bifunctional structure of the catalyst particles not changed. Rather, the chalcogen at the interface between amorphous coating and metallic carrier material and / or in the amorphous cladding layer installed. This will change the catalytic activity increases the factor 2-3 and the oxidation stability of the invention Catalyst material significantly improved in this embodiment. Become used nanoparticles on soot particles as catalyst material, can also contain chalcogen at the existing interfaces be provided.
In order to avoid repetitions at this point regarding the different types of functional complexes on special descriptions Exercise section with detailed example descriptions of synthetic processes be referenced for the catalyst material of the invention. As another advantageous embodiment of the invention should be mentioned at this point be that in mixed carrier particles and / or surfaces bound metal complexes as further transition metals - in addition to the preferably used ruthenium iron and / or nickel occur can. Your operational advantage is particularly in the cost reduction for that To see catalyst material.
Another particularly important advantage of the invention Catalyst material can be seen in its ease of manufacture. His Preparation can start from an inorganic or organometallic Transition metal precursor compound according to a process claim alternatively by thermolysis, chemical reduction or electrochemical Deposition takes place, with all three preparations in an organic, the the latter two, however, also in an aqueous solvent can be carried out with the addition of a reducing agent. Just the electrochemical deposition processes are particularly simple Manufacturing processes in which without material or temporal detours directly the different material and carrier components in contact with each other can be brought. Aside from the diversity of Synthetic processes are in particular the possibility of using aqueous ones Solvent of paramount importance. The manufacture of the invention appropriate catalyst material, which is toxic due to the elimination Chalcogenides can also be classified as environmentally friendly be carried out in an environmentally friendly manner. Stressful solvents can be circumvented. The catalyst material according to the invention thus wins with its high catalytic quality in every sense of importance since it is not is only economically but also ecologically low burden. For one This is why fuel cells are primarily used for inert purposes Coating the cathodes into consideration. But also an employment with Oxygen detectors, such as those used for monitoring the Oxygen content in food technology and environmental monitoring be used by appropriate coating of the measuring electrode conceivable and sensible.
The claims subordinate to the procedural claim are some to ent advantageous modifications of the alternative manufacturing process to take. In particular, this is the low-temperature Thermolysis in a temperature range between 50 ° C and 200 ° C, the is also particularly energy-efficient and therefore environmentally friendly. Both Dissociative proceedings arise at the end of the process in Usually a powder made of nanoparticles, which is processed accordingly can be. If a stabilizer (e.g. surfactant) is added to the reaction solution, can use free-floating nanoparticles (colloids) as catalyst material getting produced. In this you can add the material coating surfaces can be easily immersed. A smooth order on the surface is of course also possible. With chemical reduction is also a micelle preparation with the smallest produced by detergents Reaction rooms possible. Steric stabilization of the Carrier and surface particles take place around the colloidally dissolved nano to be able to form particles. In addition, thermolysis or chemical reduction of the solution with the preparation approach carbon in Powder form can be added (e.g. carbon blacks, such as volcano). in the Contrary to the method of direct immersion described above a carbon electrode in the solution, carbon particles are thereby introduced the solution to which the catalyst nanoparticles are directly attached can be. After drying, there is a powdered, supported one Material that is processed accordingly, especially especially can be easily applied to almost any substrate. A Tempering to be carried out according to a further embodiment of the invention in vacuo or under inert gas of the thermoplastic produced and with Carbon-supported catalyst in the temperature range from 300 ° C to 900 ° C leads to a significant improvement in the catalytic activity. By applying such a supported material, for example A gas diffusion electrode (GDE) activates it catalytically.
After the process for producing the catalyst material according to the invention with a chalcogen incorporation is continued, a post-treatment stage is provided in which the nanoparticles produced are brought into contact with minimal amounts of solutions containing chalcogen and are activated in subsequent tempering steps in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. It should be emphasized here that, for example, treatment of the catalyst material supported on soot in selenium acid (H 2 SeO 3 , H 6 TeO 12 ) likewise leads to an increase in the current density when reducing oxygen. A variant of this selenium activation is a treatment of the supported catalyst in a selenium-saturated xylene solution under reflux.
It is also in connection with the mentioned gas diffusion electrodes particularly advantageous if the electrochemical deposition on one in the Electrode immersed in solvent, in particular gas diffusion electrode, or when the colloidal catalyst particles on a immersed electrode, in particular a gas diffusion electrode, directly be electrosorbed. The advantages of direct deposition methods - here with and without the help of a current flow - have already been mentioned above mentioned.
Finally, some preferred material compositions should be named as particularly suitable for the catalyst material according to the invention. However, this is by no means an exhaustive list, but only an exemplary illustration of suitable metal complexes. In particular, the following can be used as precursor material in the synthesis processes mentioned: ruthenium oxalate or ruthenium carbonyl compounds, in particular trisruthenium dodecacar bonyl or ruthenium acetyl acetonate or carbido-ruthenium compounds. The preferred organic solvents are, in particular, relatively harmless nonane or tetradecane. Ruthenium oxalate catalyst is produced in an aqueous environment. A decisive increase in the catalytic activity is achieved by subsequent treatment and tempering of the catalyst in H 2 SeO 3 or H 6 TeO 12 (2 mmol). Further details regarding the components that can be used can be found in the special description part.

It can be seen that both the selenium-free and the selenium-containing catalysts show oxygen reduction.
The catalyst material of this example according to the invention was prepared by refluxing Ru 3 (CO) 12 (tris-Ru-dodeca-carbonyl) in nonane for twenty hours. For the aftertreatment with selenium, 1 g of the catalyst was suspended in a solution of 60 mg of selenium in 250 ml of toluene, and the solvent was then removed using a rotary evaporator at 40 ° C. under 20 mbar. The selenium-treated catalyst was then heated at 300 ° C. for 1 h under argon. The catalyst was then treated again at 180 ° C. in air for 2 minutes. Another post-treatment step with selenium, which was also used to activate the catalysts - as described in synthesis examples No. 2 and No. 3 - involves dispersing 1 g of the catalyst in 200 ml of water containing 0.25 g of H 2 SeO 3 (2 mmol) contained. The product was filtered off and air dried. At the end of these preparation steps, an activation step must be carried out by treating the catalyst under hydrogen at 120 ° C. for 30 minutes in order to reduce any ruthenium oxides that may have formed.
The electrodes were prepared in such a way that an aqueous suspension of the catalyst powder was dropped onto a glassy carbon rod after thorough ultrasound treatment in order to achieve a homogeneous distribution. After the solvent had been evaporated off, a dilute ethanolic Nafion solution was added to the catalyst layer and dried again. The amount of catalyst applied was 0.14 mg / cm 2 and is thus in the range of the usual loads for fuel cells. The oxygen reduction was measured using the RDE technique (rotating disk electrode rotating at different speeds) in 0.5 M oxygen-saturated sulfuric acid.
If a carbon carrier (in this case: Vulcan) is added to the reaction mixture, the catalyst deposits on the carbon. In this case too, the selenium-free catalyst significantly reduces oxygen, as can be seen from the table plot shown in FIG. 2. However, if the catalyst is treated with selenium and supported (as described above) before being supported, the catalytic activity (line of semicolons) is significantly higher. In the case shown, the electrode loading was 0.07 mg / cm 2 of catalyst, and it was also measured using RDE technology in oxygen-saturated sulfuric acid.
1.2 mM RuCl 3 (ruthenium chloride) and 6 mM trioctylammonium bromide are dissolved in 300 ml of anhydrous tetrahydro furan with stirring in an argon atmosphere. Then 3.5 ml of a 1 M solution of lithium triethyl borohydride (LiEt 3 BH), dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF), are slowly added dropwise. After the addition, the mixture is refluxed for one hour (67 ° C.) and left to stand under argon overnight. 10% by volume of absolute ethanol are added to the colloidal black-brown solution thus prepared to precipitate the metal particles. The supernatant red-brown solution is decanted off and the black residue is washed three times with 10% H 2 O / 90% ethanol. The powder is dried in a water jet vacuum; the yield is 0.24 g (based on the total mass). Activation by selenium and tempering can take place as described above.
For measurements on the rotating disk electrode (RDE), 10 mg of the powder are dissolved in 1 ml of alkaline H 2 O (pH 8) and suspended in the ultrasonic bath for 5 min. 2.5 µl of this solution are dropped onto a polished glassy carbon electrode and dried in air.
Alternatively, small particles of Ru colloids can be made in inverse micelles. For this purpose, 10 g of tetraoctylammonium bromide are dissolved in 250 ml of anhydrous toluene. Then 0.22 g RuCl 3 are added and reduced with 5 ml of a solution of LiEt 3 BH in THF. 10% by volume of ethanol with a water content of 5% are added to the brown-black solution. The resulting suspension is centrifuged and the centrifugate washed four times with aqueous ethanol and finally dried under argon. The pyrophoric powder produced in this way is X-ray amorphous and contains about 70% Ru metal according to thermogravimetric analysis. The catalyst material according to the invention can be stabilized by a selenium treatment with tempering, as described above.

To precipitate the Ru particles, absolute ethanol is added to the solution and, after settling and decanting, the precipitated product is washed with aqueous ethanol. The small particles were measured in an RDE electrode as described above (see FIGS. 5 to 8). An improvement in the oxygen reduction after selenium treatment and tempering can be seen in FIG. 9.
In Fig. 10 a schematic representation is shown of the catalyst material of the invention. Various metal complexes are attached to a carrier particle, for example made of ruthenium Ru. Various possible structural variants of the amorphous, active component of the catalyst material are shown as examples in FIGS. 7 to 10. It is evident that the catalyst complexes for the reaction with oxygen should be unsaturated, that is to say they offer free valences. In FIG. 10, the change in the catalyst material of the invention is modeled by a chalcogen treatment. Simple chalcogens (Ch = S, Se, Te) and Ch-Ch dumbbells bridge the complexes with the metallic carrier particle. Chalcogen atoms can also be incorporated in the complexes themselves. The complexes shown in FIGS. 11 to 14 can be modified in the same way. Fig. 11 shows a pure, polynuclear structure (Ru 3 (CO) 12 Tris-Ru-dodeca-carbonyl). FIG. 12 shows a mixed, multinuclear structure (FeRu 2 (CO) 12 ), in FIG. 13, on the other hand, a pure, multinuclear structure with mixed ligands. Fig. 14 is shown in a mixed polynuclear structure with mixed ligands.
