Description
Process for the complete removal of unreacted ammonia in the production of hydrogen cyanide The invention relates to a process for complete Removal of unreacted ammonia from the catalyst zone process gases in the production of hydrogen cyanide by converting ammonia, a gaseous one Hydrocarbon, e.g. B. methane or mixtures of hydrocarbons, and one gas containing free oxygen over a catalyst made of platinum or platinum alloy, the removal being accomplished without substantial loss of hydrogen cyanide.
The process for producing hydrogen cyanide by reacting ammonia with a hydrocarbon has been described by Andrussow in the USA. Patent 1,934,838. According to this process, hydrogen cyanide is obtained from the exothermic catalytic reaction in which ammonia, at least one hydrocarbon, especially methane, and oxygen or gases containing these are passed over an oxidation catalyst at elevated temperatures. The reaction of the ammonia with the hydrocarbon is usually endothermic and requires the supply of a large amount of heat from the outside; but instead of supplying the necessary heat from outside, it has been proposed to convert the reaction into an exothermic one by adding the required amount of oxygen, which generates the heat necessary for the reaction by burning the hydrocarbon.
In this process, the oxidation catalyst used can be selected Platinum metals or their alloys exist. Such platinum catalysts are preferably in the form of one or more layers of fine wire gauze of the catalytic Material applied through which the reaction gases are passed. The implementation is used at high temperatures, e.g. B. in the order of 900 to 1200 ° causes.
The gases leaving the catalyst zone not only contain hydrogen cyanide, but on the one hand both carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, water vapor and nitrogen, as on the other hand, unreacted hydrocarbon and unreacted ammonia. The unreacted ammonia must be extracted from these process gases from the catalyst zone be completely removed for subsequent polymerization of the hydrogen cyanide to avoid. Even small traces of ammonia can cause considerable polymerization cause the hydrogen cyanide to form a tar-like or resinous substance, which leads to clogging of the pipes and the apparatus. It does not follow from this only a decrease in the yield of the desired product, but also a decrease in the efficiency of the system as a whole.
The elimination or rendering harmless of this unreacted ammonia Attempts have already been made in various ways in the production of hydrogen cyanide. One has for N H3 absorption (and also for stabilizing the liquid hydrogen cyanide) Sulfuric acid is suggested as such, but this also absorbs significant amounts HCN. The unreacted NH 3 has then been isolated by removing the hydrogen cyanide bound as NaCN by introducing it into NaOH solution. Finally, the N is the H3 bond been proposed as ammonium chloride, with the required hydrogen chloride from a chlorinated hydrocarbon also used in the main reaction originates. But HCl is solely because of its volatility and the difficulty in getting it to be separated from H C N solutions, for the reduction required in the present case the pH not very suitable.
It has now been found that the goal set by an ammonia absorption system can be achieved in which the ammonia is removed by scrubbing the process gases the catalyst zone contains dilute, at least 25 percent by weight ammonium sulfate containing sulfuric acid is removed. In a specially constructed tower for the ammonia absorption, the complete absorption of the ammonia becomes from it System through precise adjustment of the pH value of the outflow from this system Liquid in the range of pH 1 to 3 ensured.
When the hot gases leave the catalyst zone, they become in a waste heat boiler to gain the sensible heat of the gases and they to cool to about 120 to 130 ° before entering the ammonia absorption system directed will. The feed gases for this system must be kept above their dew point in order to exclude the conversion of ammonia and hydrogen cyanide in the condensation water, which would otherwise lead to hydrogen cyanide polymerization.
The temperature of the outflowing liquid must also be so high as possible, as this is another factor reducing the solubility of hydrogen cyanide. In practice, the temperature of the drain was through the sensible heat of the feed gases and the heat of solution of the ammonia held in dilute sulfuric acid between 80 and 90 °. Step as described the feed gases into the ammonia absorption system at a temperature of around 120 to 130 °.
The p $ of the outflowing liquid must for the purpose of complete absorption of ammonia must be kept below 4. In practice, it is best to use an automatic one pg controller ensures that the complete absorption of the ammonia is ensured at all times is. This prevents the ammonia from entering the subsequent recovery and purification system enters and tarries the polymerization of hydrogen cyanide Products that creates the successful and uninterrupted work of this system would affect. The gas feed rate was found to be the The work of this system in apparatus designed for it is not decisive for so long seems to affect as long as there is no entrainment. It doesn't seem like either Relationship between the circulation speed and the percentage loss of hydrogen cyanide to exist in the outflowing gases. So was z. B. in a column of about 25 cm in diameter and 3 m in height, the gas feed rate from 36 to 77 kg / hour. changed, whereupon gas circulation velocities, based on the empty column, of 18 to 39 cm / sec. There was no noticeable impact in this area of the pillar work, and the ammooqiak recovery was complete.
The gases from the ammonia absorption system are then cooled and grounded the hydrogen cyanide from them by washing or by some other known method won.
By employing the ammonia absorption system of the invention, Hydrogen cyanide can be obtained in purified form and free of ammonia. Unpleasant ones Polymerization of the hydrogen cyanide by reacting the hydrogen cyanide with the Ammonia is prevented by completely removing the ammonia. Also can a substantial loss of hydrogen cyanide can be prevented.
