Description
The invention relates to a vehicle occupant restraint device to protect a vehicle occupant in a vehicle collision.
Known vehicle occupant restraints with an airbag to protect the thorax area of a vehicle occupant at be accident situations often provided inadequate protection Cervical spine injuries.
With the invention, a vehicle occupant restraint created that adapt flexibly to the respective accident situation and with which the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant is extremely high can be kept low. According to the invention is driving Vehicle occupant restraint with a first gas bag for protection the thoracic area of a vehicle occupant to support the first Gas bags provided a second gas bag, which unfolds in the zu stood at least partially over the vehicle's windshield extends.
The additional second gas bag is used in the event of a vehicle collision if necessary, as a support for the first gas bag and holds it during the course of the accident in a predetermined position so that an optimal protective function guaranteed by the first gas bag is. The defined position of the first gas bag and the possible division of the impact energy of the driver inmates on two separate gas bags allows the volume of the first gas bags of around 100 to 150 liters of thorax Reduce gas bags to about 70 to 90 liters without the Protective effect is impaired. Thus, due to the reduction tion of the required amount of gas cheaper gas generators for Inflation of the gas bag can be used. In addition, the Using a gas bag with reduced volume will shorten the opening blowing time compared to conventional thorax gas bags, and it be there is a reduced risk of injury to the occupant during the Unfolding process.
The second gas bag also prevents the head of the Occupants with the windshield, being arranged by the Both gas bags provide targeted freedom of movement for the head of the Vehicle occupants is created so that the moments of acceleration on to keep the neck down in the event of an accident. This will make one allows a significant reduction in the strain on the cervical spine.
Preferably, the second gas bag is arranged so that it is in the unfolded condition on the windshield. So that's one ensures optimal protection for the vehicle occupant, because at In such a constellation, the first gas bag indirectly over the two airbag is supported on the windshield and thus the Impact of the vehicle occupant can be intercepted as best as possible. For further avoidance of head injuries from possible contact the head of the vehicle occupant with the A pillar of the vehicle an oblique or offset impact extends the second Airbag in the unfolded state, preferably via at least one A-pillar area.
From a functional and constructional point of view, it proves to be the second gas bag in the headlining of the vehicle is particularly advantageous accommodate. In this preferred embodiment, unfolds the second gas bag from top to bottom along the windshield, which means that there is no potential hazard for the occupant if it is removed is given, especially if it is in a so-called named out-of-position position, d. H. if he's not a normal one Occupies a sitting position. This is often in the front seats of children the case. Especially in convertibles that have no fixed roof the second gas bag, however, also in the dashboard or in the area of the A-pillar of the vehicle.
For vehicles that are both a driver and a passenger side restraint, each with an airbag to protect the Have thoracic region, it is advantageous if the second Airbag essentially over the entire width of the windshield extends. It can then be used as a support for a collision serve the driver and the passenger-side thorax gas bag. However, two separate systems can be invented, each with one Vehicle occupant restraint device according to the invention may be provided.
Beifahrer wieder freizugeben. In a development of the device according to the invention is a Traction system provided that the deployed second gas bag after a Vehicle collision pulls away from the windshield to the field of view to release for the driver or front passenger.
The first gas bag to protect the thorax area of the vehicle can sit in a device for the driver of a motor vehicle in the steering wheel or with a device for the passenger in the fittings board of the vehicle. An additional protective radio tion arises in the latter case by accommodating the first Gas bags in the lower area of the fittings that delimit the footwell boards. The unfolded state from the footwell over the Armatu The airbag extending from the rear board then also fulfills the function a knee protector.
An additional protection of the knee area of the vehicle occupant can also be achieved by providing a third gas bag that unfolds in the footwell of the vehicle. Particularly space saving is an embodiment in which a gas generator for opening blowing from more than one of the gas bags is provided.
An even better adaptation to the respective accident situation and to the parameters of the vehicle occupant is also made possible that a multi-stage gas generator for inflating at least the first Gas bags is used. For example, depending on the strength of the Vehicle collision and weight of the vehicle occupant the first gas bag be inflated harder or less hard. Also a controlled one a delay in inflation is therefore possible.

In Fig. 1, a vehicle occupant restraint apparatus is shown for the driver of a motor vehicle in the tripped state. A first gas bag 12 for protecting the thorax area of the vehicle occupant 10 has deployed out of the steering wheel 14 . A second airbag 16 , which has unfolded in front of the first airbag 12 from a receptacle 18 in the roof lining 20 above the windshield 22 from top to bottom, extends over the upper region of the windshield 22 of the vehicle. The second gas bag 16 , which rests directly on the windshield 22 , indirectly supports the first gas bag 12 on the windshield 22 , so that it is held in its predetermined position. Furthermore, the second airbag 16 preferably covers the entire A-pillar of the vehicle towards the occupant. A first end 24 of a band 25 is attached to the outer surface of the second gas bag 16 . The second end 26 of the band is coupled to the piston 30 of a piston / cylinder unit 28 arranged in the roof lining 20 of the vehicle. Enabling this piston / - cylinder unit 28 after the vehicle collision, for example, by applying the side facing the windshield side of the piston 30 with a compressed gas moves the piston 30 of the windshield 22 away, thereby pulling the deployed second airbag 16 of the windshield 22 away, so that the view to the front through the windshield 22 is released again. Band 25 and piston / cylinder unit 28 form a train system.
FIG. 2 shows a restraint device for the front passenger of a motor vehicle, which largely corresponds to the device shown in FIG. 1, but without a restraint system 24 , 28 for the second gas bag 16 . In contrast to the device of FIG. 1, the first gas bag 12 has been deployed to protect the thorax area from a receptacle 32 of the dashboard 33 facing the upper body of the vehicle occupant 10 . A multistage gas generator 34 is also indicated in the receptacle 32 of the dashboard 33 , with which the first gas bag 12 is inflated in accordance with the respective requirements.
The vehicle occupant restraint device shown in FIG. 3 differs from that shown in FIG. 2 in that the first gas bag 12 was accommodated in a receptacle 36 arranged in the lower area of the dashboard 33 delimiting the footwell and from the footwell over the dashboard 33 to the second gas bag 16 has unfolded, which in turn supports the first gas bag 12 on the windshield 22 . In this embodiment, the first airbag 12 additionally fulfills the function of a knee protection device, which otherwise requires, for example, the provision of a separate so-called knee bag.
In the embodiment of FIG. 4, in addition to the first airbag 12 on the passenger side and the second airbag 16 on which the first airbag 12 is supported, a third airbag 17 is provided to protect the knee area of the vehicle occupant. The third gas bag unfolds in the footwell of the vehicle and is supported on an area of the dashboard 33 that delimits the footwell. According to the illustrated embodiment, the second airbag 16 has deployed in contrast to the previously described embodiments from a windshield 22 facing opening of the dashboard 33 (preferably the openings of the ventilation duct) from the bottom up. In the embodiment shown, all three gas bags 12 , 16 , 17 are inflated by a single gas generator 34 of a gas bag module, which is accommodated in a receptacle 32 of the dashboard 33 . However, two or three different gas generators can also be provided.
In Fig. 5, an embodiment of the invention is shown, each providing on the driver and on the passenger side a separate second airbag. In a view from above of the vehicle, the driver's second gas bag 16 a and the passenger's second gas bag 16 b can be seen in the inflated state. In this embodiment, a separate gas supply system with gas generators 38 a, 38 b and gas pipes 40 a, 40 b is also provided for the driver and for the passenger-side second gas bag 16 a, 16 b, which are housed in the headlining of the vehicle. However, it can also, as in the embodiment shown in Fig. 6, driver and passenger gas sack from a common gas supply system with a single gas generator 38 and a gas pipe 40 , which extends into or through both gas bags, are supplied.
The passenger-side gas bag module of the embodiment with the separate gas supply systems from FIG. 5 can be seen in an enlarged view in FIG. 7. The gas generator 38 a is attached to the vehicle roof by means of the housing 42 a. The gas pipe 40 a extends from the gas generator 38 a through the gas bag housing 44 a and the gas bag folded therein, which can be seen better in section in FIG. 8. At its other end, the gas pipe is attached to the vehicle with a bracket 46 . The portion of the gas tube 40 a located in the interior of the gas bag has outflow openings 48 .
In Fig. 8 it can be seen that the gas bag housing 44 a on a reinforcement plate 50 of the vehicle roof 52 under the headlining 20 is introduced. When activated ( Fig. 9), the gas bag housing 44 a is pressed open by the unfolding gas bag. In addition, the gas bag 16 a presses the headliner 20 from its holder 56 on the windshield 22 , so that the gas bag 16 a can spread in the direction of the windshield 22 .
In all embodiments, it is provided that the second gas bag 16 , 16 a, 16 b is only deployed if the accident situation or other relevant circumstances, eg. B. require the parameters of the vehicle occupant 10 .
When using the vehicle occupant restraint device according to the invention with a two-stage gas generator 34 in conjunction with seat belt, seat occupancy and speed sensors, a factor of two which is higher than the number of voting combinations is possible.
