The method and the associated device is used for the treatment of granular, moist and dusty bulk materials with electron beams in a vacuum, in particular for the electron pickling of seeds (cereals).
It is known to irradiate seeds on all sides with low-energy electrons. The electron energy and radiation dose is such that the surface and near-surface layer is acted upon without significant impairment of the germ (DD-PS 242337). For this purpose, a device is known which constantly redistributes the seed by means of moving devices in a recipient, wherein it is acted upon by a deflected and fanned electron beam. With the recipient transport facilities for the supply and removal of the seed are connected to the associated locks (US-PS 4,633,611).
Particularly disadvantageous here is the high evaporation rate of the water bound to or in the surface of the bulk material at the required vacuum in the irradiation chamber. This can only be countered with an unacceptably high evacuation effort. The residence times in the jet exposure area are too high. This method and device also has the disadvantage that an industrial application requiring high throughput is not possible due to the high dust content of the seed. This high dust development in the irradiation chamber disturbs the long-term operation of the electron gun. In addition, irradiation facilities are known with which the bulk material is conducted in a free atmosphere (US-PS 860,513 and 2,333,842). These devices are not suitable to effect the application of the surface and the near-surface layer of the bulk material to exactly prescribed depth, in particular may occur due to the occurring energy dispersion phytotoxic effects for the seed.
It is a method and the associated device to provide that allows the large-scale use while avoiding the shortcomings of the known methods. Irradiation is to be carried out, which has a broad fungicidal spectrum of activity without any damage to the seed that causes damage to yields.
The invention has for its object to provide a method and a device that irradiates bulk material in a vacuum with electrons so that a high throughput at low residence times in the recipient is possible. The high water content of the seed must not significantly increase the effort for evacuation. The adhering to the bulk dust must be largely kept away from the process chamber by a vacuum decoupling is to take place. According to the invention, the object is achieved by introducing and removing the bulk material into or out of the evacuated irradiation chamber, in which electron beams act on the bulk material, that the bulk material is conveyed via locks in the stepwise pressure transition from atmospheric pressure in the irradiation pressure range and in each Pressure stage by evacuation as little gas (water vapor) and dust are sucked. For this purpose, the pressure in the pressure stages is adjusted so that the vapor pressure of the water is not exceeded. The pressure in the irradiation chamber is between 100 Pa and several 100 Pa. After passing through the pressure stages, the bulk material is transported in free fall through the irradiation chamber and thereby acted upon by several fanned electron beams. The evacuation regime of the electron gun and irradiation chamber is performed so that the air currents are always directed when pumping and aerating the device from the electron gun to the irradiation chamber. The rapid transfer of the bulk material from the pressure-lock, in which a pressure above the bound water in the surface of the bulk material, in the irradiation chamber with a much lower pressure and the short residence time in the irradiation chamber causes a sudden drop in temperature on the surface of the bulk material and thus a reduction in the evaporation rate of the water.
It is advantageous to control the transport of the bulk material before the last respective pressure stage for the input and output of the bulk material and possibly also in the device so that a column is maintained from the bulk material whose height is large compared to their diameter. This column thus acts as a flow resistance. The device for carrying out the method, consisting of a recipient as an irradiation chamber with arranged electron guns and a Druckstufenschleusensystem for in and out of the bulk material, according to the invention constructed such that the lock system consists of several rotary valves and that connected between each two rotary valves a vacuum pump is. The rotary valve facing the atmospheric pressure is expediently each speed-controlled in order to form a column of bulk material within the entire device, in particular the pressure-leveling lock system. The electron guns have multiple apertures whose diameter is constantly increasing after the beam exit side. Between the last and the penultimate orifice in the direction of the jet exit, a valve-adjustable connection to the atmosphere is provided, in order to constantly effect a metered air flow in the direction of the irradiation chamber, which prevents the entry of dust into the electron gun. Between the other panels vacuum generators are connected.
In order to pressurize the bulk material in a targeted manner on all sides with the electron beam during the free fall through the irradiation chamber, at least two electron guns are arranged opposite to the irradiation chamber. The irradiation chamber is dimensioned so that the time of free fall is sufficient to separate the bulk material sufficiently, d. H. that the irradiation chamber has a corresponding length. It is advantageous to arrange one line, which has a great length in relation to its cross-section, for forming a column of bulk material in the pressure-level lock systems in front of the first rotary valve for the bulk material input and before the last rotary valve for the bulk material output.

Infolge dieser Druckeinstellung wird der Gesamtevakuierungsaufwand für die Vakuumerzeuger 6 minimiert.set that the vapor pressure of the water, which is located in the near-surface layer of the bulk material 4, is not exceeded. As a result of this pressure setting, the total evacuation effort for the vacuum generators 6 is minimized.
Irradiation chamber 1 is about 100 Pa to several 100 Pa and is determined by the requirements of the electron beam 12, which acts on the scattered grains of the bulk material 4, which pass through the irradiation chamber 1 in free fall. By this principle of promotion, the residence time in the irradiation chamber 1 is very low, whereby the water output of the bulk material 4 and the evacuation costs are kept low. A further reduction of the water vapor discharge is caused by the abrupt lowering of the temperature, which results from the rapid transition from the pressure in the last stage of the pressure-leveling lock system 2 to the pressure in the irradiation chamber 1. This temperature reduction remains limited to the near-surface layer of the grain due to the comparatively large time constant for the temperature compensation in the grain. As a result of this temperature reduction, the evaporation rate on the grain surface also decreases. The discharge of the bulk material 4 from the irradiation chamber 1 geschehen in an analogous manner to the process of introduction, wherein the pressures in the individual stages are also above the vapor pressure of the water. By the execution of the rotary feeder 5.3 as a speed-controlled metering above this column of bulk material 4 is accumulated, which acts as an additional flow resistance when the length of this accumulated column is large against the dimensions of its cross section.
