Abstract
Der Anteil an anfallenden Nebenprodukten beträgt ca. 0,2 bis 0,3 kg pro kg erzeugtes gereinigtes Trimethylolpropan.especially the organic by-products formed in the synthesis and work-up, such as acetals and esters, other polyalcohols and a number of other low-volatility higher molecular weight compounds. These by-products are usually separated from the main product by vacuum distillation. There is a heavy and a light ils trimethylolpropane volatile by-product fraction. The heavier than trimethylolpropane volatile Nebenproc.ktfraktion contains on identifiable components of the linear bis-trimethylolpropaneformal, other trimethylolpropane formal with at least two bound trimethylolpropane residues and the ether di-trimethylolpropane and its formal. Main constituents of the lighter than trimethylolpropane volatile by-product fraction are dimethylolpropane and its acetals and formates, Trimethyloipropan-formiate and lighter than trimethylolpropane volatile trimethylolpropane acetals, such as trimethylolpropane-ethylacrolein acetal, trimethylolpropane-butyraldehyde acetal, Trimethylolpropanmethanol formal and cyclic Trimethylolpropan formal , The proportion of by-products obtained is about 0.2 to 0.3 kg per kg of purified trimethylolpropane produced.
In practice, it proves to be very difficult, in particular, to make the high-viscosity fraction of the by-products heavier than trimethylolpropane by-products, which can hardly be further worked up by distillation without pretreatment, so that they are frequently discarded or used only in calories. On the other hand, however, egg iige the components contained in the residue are valuable ingredients. The most notable examples are the linear bis-trimethylolpropane formal with a content of usually 0.2 to 0.4 kg / kg, other low volatility formals and the ether di-trimethylolpropane , Since the fraction of heavier than trimethylolpropane volatile by-products is usually thermally unstable and may not be indefinitely thermally stressed in the vacuum distillation, may also be expected with a non-separable by distillation residual amount of trimethylolpropane from 0.1 to 0.3 kg / kg.
It was proposed to thermally cleave said fraction of by-products which are heavier than trimethylolpropane or a byproduct fraction which is heavier and lighter than trimethylolpropane, and to recover from the cleavage products alpha-ethylacrolein (DD-PS 77,201). The value of alpha-ethylacrolein, however, is less than that of trimethylolpropane. In addition, only a part of the feedstock can be split. Apart from alpha-ethylacrolein, other worthless cleavage products are formed, and the staining of alpha-ethylacroloin is relatively expensive. The residual proportion of high-quality trimethylolpropane optionally present in the fraction is likewise split with. Proposals to treat the by-products during the distillative purification prior to the separation of the main portion of trimethylolpropane with acids and bases (DE-AS 1056595, US 3259662) are unsuccessful. It is to be expected with greater yield losses of trimethylolpropane, and achievable pure Tr'n.Mhylolpropan quality leaves something to be desired. According to DD-PS 857 802 a Umacetaiisierung and transesterification should take place in the Höh- r rimethylolpropan contained acetals and esters. The crude trimethylolpropane is dissolved in methanol and subjected to a long thermal treatment at 353 to 393K in a batch distillation column. Already in the presence of the trace amount of acid present in the crude trimethylolpropane, transesterification and transacetalization should take place. Disadvantages are the large amount of methanol required, the long treatment time, the complex technology and the only relatively small increase in quality for the purified trimethylolpropane. It is also known that trimethylolpropane can be obtained from the low-volatility by-product fraction by transacetalization of trimethylolpropane compounds with methanol in the presence of acidic cation exchange resins (DD-PS 142184). This method / is technologically very complex and has significant disadvantages. The fraction to be treated must be mixed with a portion of water. The cation exchanger treatment and the distillative separation of the resulting volatile constituents are frequently carried out, for example 15 to 20 times, alternately. High treatment temperatures and product residence times are required and a pressure greater than 0.1 MPa must be set to achieve economical yields. The cation exchange resin must be regenerated at appropriate intervals, that is, switchable resin columns must be installed.
It is interesting eion proposal from a heavier than trimethylolpropane volatile by-product fraction, which has a high proportion of di-trimethylolpropane and to formals of di-trimethylolpropane to win the ether di-trimethylolpropane (DE-AS 2058518, AS 2058519). The contained formals are transacetalized with methanoi in the presence of acid. However, the process is technologically and energetically complex. The resulting formaldehyde dimethyl acetal must be continuously removed by distillation during the conversion time. Treatment temperatures and product residence times are high, and yield losses due to side reactions are expected.
The aim of the invention is from a fraction of heavier than trimethylolpropane volatile byproducts of trimethylolpropane production, which is obtained in the vacuum distillation of crude trimethylolpropane or other purification processes, and which is not economically usable without additional treatment, in a relatively simple and economical way To gain an additional proportion of trimethylolpropane, so that the overall yield of the process for the preparation of trimethylolpropane from n-Butyraldehvd and formaldehyde can be increased.
It is an object of the present invention to develop a process for recovering trimethylolpropane from the heavier than trimethylolpropane volatile by-product fraction resulting from trimethylolpropane production in order to increase the overall yield of trimethylolpropane, which is usually 70 to 80%. The process should be technologically straightforward and characterized by a good economy.
The friction of heavier than trimethylolpropane volatile by-products to be treated is usually incurred in the vacuum distillation of crude trimethylolpropane. However, it is also possible to use another separation method for obtaining the said fraction, for example extraction or partial crystallization.
Gegebenenfalls kommen auch Fraktionen zum Einsatz, bei denen die für die Gewinnung von Trimethylolpropan nutzbaren, schwerer als Trimethylolpropan flüchtigen Acetale, vor allem das lineare Bis-trimethylolpropan-formal, in aufkonzentrierter Form vorliegenOptionally, fractions are also used in which the usable for the production of trimethylolpropane, heavier than trimethylolpropane volatile acetals, especially the linear bis-trimethylolpropane formally present in concentrated form
Die Hauptkomponente, das lineare Bis-trimethylolpropan-formal, besitzt folgende Struktur: The main component, the linear bis-trimethylolpropane formal, has the following structure:
CH0OH CH0OHCH 0 OH CH 0 OH
\2 \2 \ 2 \ 2
C2H5 - C - CH2O - CH2 - OCH2 -Q- C2H5 C 2 H 5 - C - CH 2 OCH 2 - OCH 2 -Q- C 2 H 5
OH2OH CH2OHOH 2 OH CH 2 OH
The object is achieved in that the said fraction of heavier than trimethylolpropane volatile by-products of trimethylolpropane production after admixing of 0.5 to 5kg / kg of a low-boiling aliphatic alcohol and 0.02 to 0.2 kg / kg of a strong acid thermal treatment at a temperature of 293 to 343 K and a residence time of 0.1 to 10 h unterzoghen, wherein the contained in said fraction linear bis-trimethylolpropane formally and optionally other heavy than trimethylolpropane volatile acetals are converted by Umacetalisierung to trimethylolpropane Without the resulting acetals of the low-boiling alcohol must be continuously separated during the reaction, and trimethylolpropane is recovered after workup. Alternatively, the fraction heavier than trimethylolpropane by-products of the trimethylolpropane preparation may be subjected to the treatment of the invention in admixture with by-products which are more volatile than trimethylolpropane. The content of trimethylolpropane in the fraction to be treated should advantageously be 0 to 0.5 kg / kg, in order to keep downoutput losses of trimethylolpropane by side reactions and the amount of acid to be added low. Furthermore, the content of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compounds should be as low as possible, since part of the added acid is bound by these compounds. A maximum value of 0.05kg / kg should not be exceeded. It is advantageous to use methanol as a low-boiling alcohol, since this is particularly reactive with respect to a Umacetalisierung. Apart from trimethylolpropane, the by-products cyciic trimethylolpropane-formally and, to a lesser extent, trimethylolpropane-methanol formally occur in the transacetalization of the linear bis-trimethylolpropane formal with methanol. The conversion of bis-trimethylolpropane-formal is likely to proceed formally as an intermediate with the formation of trimethylolpropane-methanol, which is then further converted to trimethylolpropane and formaldehyde dimethylacetal umacetallsiart:

As a further side reaction, the attack of the OH groups of the polyol-containing fraction to be treated by acid contained could be observed with elimination of water and formation of ether-like structures or with decomposition of trimethylolpropane portions. The proportion of said by-products is minimized by the special, gentle conditions of the process according to the invention.
The amount of low-boiling aliphatic alcohol to be used is advantageously 2 to 3 kg / kg. At this concentration, the content of resulting formal and optionally other acetals of the low-boiling aliphatic alcohol is relatively low compared to the low-boiling point alcohol, and a high trimethylolpropane yield can be achieved without having to remove the resulting acetals from the reaction equilibrium. The treatment is thus energetically cheaper, and it can be a continuous technology realized. The reaction mixture must have a high Acidltät. It is therefore a strong acid or acidic substance, advantageously sulfuric acid to use. The preferred range for the amount of acid to be added is 0.05 to 0.15 kg / kg. In the sulfuric acid amount of 0.1 kg / kg used in accordance with the example given, a trimethylolpropane yield of greater than 85% of the maximum amount of trimethylolpropane obtainable from the bis-trimethylolpropane obtained could be achieved. At only 0.025 kg / kg sulfuric acid use, the required residence time for bis-trimethylolpropane conversion conversion increased, and the trimethylolpropane yield decreased to less than 75%. The presence of water substantially slows down the transacetalization reaction. Thus, with a water content of 0.1 kg / kg, the required residence time increases well over ten times as compared to the anhydrous reaction mixture. The acid should therefore be used in concentrated form, if possible, and the water content in the reaction mixture should not exceed 0.05 kg / kg. During the transacetalization, the treatment temperature should be kept low. In order to minimize the by-product formation, that is, to realize a product-gentle transacetalization, treatment temperatures of 303 to 333 K are preferably to be set; it is worked below the boiling point of the added alcohol.
At the mentioned treatment temperatures, the trimethylolpropane losses due to dehydration by the presence of acid are low. At 323K they are only 40 to 50% of the losses measured at 353K; after 1 h dwell time, a loss of less than 1% was found at 323K. The Produktverwoilzeiten are kept as low as possible, advantageously at 1 to 3 h. The work-up of the reaction mixture can be carried out by distillation or by means of other Trennverfohren. In the distillative work-up again the possible dehydration from the polyol-containing reaction gomitch by the presence of acid is observed. Therefore, the acidic reaction mixture should be advantageously neutralized to bind the admixed soluble acid prior to work-up. When using an acidic solid substance, for example, a strongly acidic cation exchange resin, this is not necessary, since this can be easily separated from the reaction mixture. If the reaction mixture worked up by distillation after neutralization, the formal and optionally other acetals of the added aliphatic alcohol and the excess aliphatic alcohol are first obtained. The excess aliphatic alcohol can be used again for the transacetalization, and the resulting acetals of the low-boiling alcohol, especially formaldehyde dimethyl acetal, are also recyclable, for example as a special solvent. Thereafter, from the reaction mixture, a more volatile than trimethylolpropane volatile, to cyclic? Trimethylolpropane formally rich fraction separated, which can also be converted to trimethylolpropane, if it proves to be economical. Finally, the trimethylolpropane is separated from dom heavier than trimethylolpropane volatile residual product.
