Abstract
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of higher substituted cellulose ether esters. It relates to the field of preparation of cellulose derivatives with e.g. certain biological activity or specific separation effect, which can be used in particular as microbicidal or herbicidal substances and formulations in the form of special traeger and separating materials. The object and the object of the invention is to covalently bond active substituents to the cellulose chain by means of an acylation reaction in an adequately sufficient concentration, while at the same time obtaining a soluble product in organic solvents. In accordance with the process of the invention, cellulose ethers with degrees of substitution between 1.5 and 2.5 are dissolved in an organic solvent of low to medium polarity and, if appropriate, an auxiliary base of an esterification reaction with acylating agents preferably carrying specific active ingredient groups, in particular with high volume and / or sterically hindered aromatic compounds, whereby it is possible to react 20 to 100% of the still free hydroxyl groups of the cellulose chains contained in the respective cellulose ether and to produce a higher substituted organo-cellulose ether with specific properties.

In view of the increasing importance of cellulose derivatives as carrier and separating materials for special applications, it is necessary to introduce effective substituents in the cellulose chain, which in particular very particular large-volume ester groups come in embossing. An essential prerequisite for the application-specific use of such products is that they are hydrophobic in a defined manner and soluble in organic solvents, so as to guarantee a controlled drug release and to enable an application that must often be carried out in an organosoluble state. Achieving sufficient organosolubility requires again high degrees of substitution.
However, the known processes for the esterification of cellulose with large-volume or sterically hindered acylating agents do not lead to the desired success here. If one usually starts from a heterogeneous, multiphase system, it is usually necessary to use very reactive acylating reagents in order to achieve higher degrees of substitution or to introduce bulky, sterically hindered substituents. In some cases, it has also been successfully used with the addition of an auxiliary base, e.g. Working pyridine or triethylamine, whereby the esterification reaction accelerated, or could be made more complete.
An example of this, with the successful combination of reactive acylating agent and auxiliary base, which simultaneously acts as a solvent for the resulting product, is the preparation of gellulosetricarbanilate from cellulose and phenyl isocyanate in pyridine (Makromol Chemie 44 (1961) p. 358-378 Paserforsch, and Textiltechnik 21 (1970) p 13-20) However, it is known that in the introduction of other large-volume substituents in the cellulose molecule, these and similar esterification reactions either not at all successful or only to low degrees of substitution. ! Low degrees of substitution, however, generally prevent an organ-
Solubility of the resulting cellulose ester. Under certain conditions, it is also possible to esterify a part of the hydroxyl groups of the cellulose in the homogeneous system. So it is e.g. possible to dissolve the cellulose in a dinitrogen tetrozide / dimethylformamide mixture and to react this solution to introduce acetyl groups with acetic anhydride in the presence of excess pyridine by a kind of "transesterification reaction" up to a DS £ 2. (Cellulose Chem. Technol. 14 (1980) p. 13-17). However, it is also possible in this way not correspondingly high Yeresterungsgrade when using bulky or sterically hindered acylating on the cellulose chain to achieve and thus to achieve an organosoluble. It is also known that, like cellulose esters, higher substituted cellulose ethers are also soluble in organic solvents. Work on the preparation of cellulose ether esters by a subsequent esterification of all or most of the still free hydroxyl groups in such cellulose ethers, especially for the introduction of large-volume ester group substituents have not been known. Sbensö has no information on the selection of specific catalyst systems and their effect such esterification reaction on polymers.

The principle of the method according to the invention is that a cellulose ether, preferably Benzylceliulose or ethylcellulose higher degree of substitution, preferably, between 1.5 and 2.5, dissolved in an organic solvent of low to medium polarity, preferably in benzene, and at temperatures from 0 to 100 0 C, preferably 20 to 60 0 C, with the addition of 0.05 to 0.3 mol of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) per anhydroglucose unit al3 catalyst or «activator and in general, in a conventional manner, in the presence of an auxiliary base, preferably of organic amines, in particular triethylamine, with an acylating reagent preferably present as acid chloride or anhydride, in particular a specific active compound.

It is surprising that 20 to 100%, preferably 25 to 90 % of the still free hydroxyl groups of the cellulose chains contained in the cellulose ether are reacted by the acylation by the inventive method, on the one hand without the use of DMA? virtually no esterification takes place and, on the other hand, the positive effect achievable with DJiAP addition is particularly pronounced in the reaction medium of low to medium polarity proposed according to the invention.
The cellulose ether esters prepared in this way are organosoluble, have a sufficient active ingredient group concentration for the intended purposes and can be used in the resulting Porm or additionally purified in a manner known per se, worked up and, if required, redissolved in a suitable organic solvent.
