Abstract
The invention relates to a process for the production of optical fibers for the optical transmission of communications. With the invention, the continuous production of gradient-profile optical fibers with good transmission properties is to be made possible according to a simpler method. According to the invention, this is achieved by thermally post-treating a homogeneous glass fiber drawn by a conventional technique. The temperature treatment may be an additional tempering or a defined cooling after the drawing process or a combination of one or more cooling and heating cycles, depending on the chemical composition of the fiber and the drawing temperature.

Anwendungsgebiet der ErfindungField of application of the invention
The invention relates to a method for producing optical fibers for optical communication.
Charakteristik der bekannten technischen LösungenCharacteristic of the known technical solutions
It is known that gradient-profile optical fibers are obtained by ion exchange in molten salts (IEEE J. quant. Electron. 6 (1969) 606) or by means of the double-crucible technique (US-PS 3,288,583, DT-PS 2,654,308). can be produced, wherein pulled simultaneously with the Paserkern the fiber cladding and the gradient profile is produced by diffusion or ion exchange. The double-crucible technique has the disadvantage of being technically very complicated and demanding high accuracy of the setting of the drawing nozzles. The process of ion exchange in molten salts only allows the production of short pieces of fiber.
Ziel der ErfindungObject of the invention
The aim of the invention is the production of gradient-profile optical fibers according to a simpler method.
Wesen der ErfindungEssence of the invention
It has been found that thermal transport processes take place in the fibers during the thermal after-treatment, resulting in a refractive index gradient profile. The refractive index of the thread core becomes higher than that of the thread sheath.

Subsequent to the die is a tube furnace of 1 cm in diameter and 150 cm in length, the temperature at the fiber inlet 850 0 C and continuously decreases until the fiber exit to 600 0 C. As a result of the temperature gradient occurring between the fiber core and the fiber cladding, a sodium thermotransport is caused. The sodium migrates to the fiber core. After complete cooling, the fiber core has an approximately 0.9 % higher refractive index than the fiber cladding. The refractive index increase from the cladding to the core is continuous.
