A method for rapid drying, cooling and rearrangement of tobacco, comprising: loading said tobacco onto a continuous conveyor belt at a predetermined bed depth; conveying said tobacco on said conveyor belt through a desiccator using a heated air fluidized bed; transporting said tobacco on said conveyor belt through a desiccator using a fluidized bed of ambient air; transferring said tobacco to a steam tunnel consisting of a vibrating conveyor; and rearranging said tobacco in said steam tunnel. An apparatus for the rapid drying, cooling and rearrangement of clean tobacco, comprising: a tobacco desiccator consisting of a plurality of individually controlled heating zones; a tobacco cooler having a cooling zone; a continuous conveyor belt extending through said tobacco desiccator and said tobacco cooler; a transition area consisting of a steam bed at the end of said continuous conveyor; a reorder consisting of a steam tunnel formed through it; and a vibratory conveyor adjacent to said vapor bed transition area and projecting through said reorder. The desiccator according to claim 23 in which each of said heating zones includes instruments for recirculating said high pressure air.
