根据本发明的一种等离子体显示装置,包括等离子体显示面板、控制器和驱动器。所述等离子体显示面板具有:多个行电极,被构造成执行显示操作;多个列电极,形成在与行电极交叉的方向上;多个室,形成在多个行电极和多个列电极的交叉点附近。所述控制器,被构造成:将场划分成多个子场;将多个行电极划分成第一行组和第二行组;将行电极的第一行组划分成多个第一子组;将行电极的第二行组划分成多个第二子组。所述驱动器被构造成驱动多个行电极和多个列电极,其中,驱动器被构造成:在第一子场的第一时间段中,从第一子组中选择将不发光的一个或多个放电室,其中,第一子组的其余放电室保持发光;在第一时间段中,第二子组的一个或多个发光室维持放电;在第一子场的第二时间段中,从第二子组中选择将不发光的一个或多个放电室,其中,第二子组的其余放电室保持发光;在第二时间段中,第一子组的一个或多个发光室维持放电。

在下面的详细描述中,只简单地通过示出的方式示出和描述了本发明的特定实施例。如本领域技术人员所知道的,在不脱离本发明的精神或范围的情况下,可以以多种不同的方式修改所描述的实施例。为了使描述清晰,省略了说明书中没有描述的特定部分,提供相似描述的特定部分具有相同的标号。
此外,整个说明书及权利要求中,词语“包括”应被理解为表明包含所述的元件,但不排除任何其他元件,除非明确地描述不是这样。
此外,在下面的描述中提及的壁电荷指形成和聚集在靠近放电室的电极的壁(例如,电介质层)上的电荷。虽然壁电荷实际上一般不接触电极,但是壁电荷将被描述成“形成”或“积聚”在电极上。另外,“壁电压”指通过壁电荷而在放电室的壁上形成的电势差。
现在,将参照图1来描述根据实施例的等离子体显示装置。
图1示出了表示根据实施例的等离子体显示装置的示图。
如图1所示,等离子体显示装置包括等离子体显示面板(PDP)100、控制器200、寻址电极驱动器300、扫描电极驱动器400和维持电极驱动器500。
PDP 100包括在列方向上延伸的多个寻址电极A1至Am(下面称为“A电极”)以及在行方向上延伸的成对的多个维持电极X1至Xn和多个扫描电极Y1至Yn(下面分别称为“X电极”和“Y电极”)。X电极X1至Xn和Y电极Y1至Yn相对应地形成,在维持阶段通过X电极和Y电极执行显示操作。Y电极Y1至Yn和X电极X1至Xn垂直于A电极A1至Am排列。这里,形成在A电极A1至Am与X电极X1至Xn和Y电极Y1至Yn相交叉的区域处的放电空间形成放电室12。图1中示出的PDP 100的构造是示例,可采用其它的构造。下面,在行方向上成对延伸的X电极和Y电极称为行电极,在列方向上延伸的A电极称为列电极。
控制器200在接收图像信号之后输出X电极驱动控制信号、Y电极驱动控制信号和A电极驱动控制信号。此外,控制器200通过将帧划分成多个子场来驱动等离子体显示装置,并通过将多个行电极划分成第一行组和第二行组并通过将第一行组和第二行组划分成多个各子组来控制等离子体显示装置。
寻址电极驱动器300从控制器200接收寻址电极驱动控制信号,并将用于选择将放电的放电室的显示数据信号施加到各寻址电极A。
扫描电极驱动器400从控制器200接收扫描电极驱动控制信号,并将驱动电压施加到扫描电极Y。
维持电极驱动器500从控制器200接收维持电极驱动控制信号,并将驱动电压施加到维持电极X。
参照图2,现在将更加详细地描述根据实施例的等离子体显示装置的驱动方法。
图2示出了等离子体显示装置的驱动方法中使用的将各电极分组的方法。
如图2所示,在一个场中,多个行电极X1至Xn和Y1至Yn被划分成两个行组,即第一行组G1和第二行组G2。这里,第一行组G1可包括位于PDP100的较上区域中的多个X电极X1至Xn/2和多个Y电极Y1至Yn/2,第二行组G2可包括位于PDP 100的较下区域中的多个X电极Xn/2+1至Xn和多个Y电极Yn/2+1至Yn,第一行组G1可包括偶数行电极,第二行组G2可包括奇数行电极。此外,第一行组G1和第二行组G2的多个Y电极分别再划分成多个子组G11至G18和G21至G28。在图2中,假定第一行组G1和第二行组G2分别被划分成八个子组G11至G18和G21至G28。
也就是说,在第一行组G1中,第一至第j Y电极Y1至Yj被分到第一子组G11中,第(j+1)至第2j Y电极Yj+1至Y2j被分到第二子组G12中。以这样的方式,第(7j+1)至第(n/2)Y电极Y7j+1至Yn/2被分到第八子组G18中(这里,j为1和n/16之间的整数)。相似地,在第二行组G2中,第(8j+1)至第9j Y电极Y8j+1至Y9j被分到第一子组G21中,第(9j+1)至第10j Y电极Y9j+1至Y10j被分到第二子组G22中。以这样的方式,第(15j+1)至第nY电极Y15j+1至Yn被分到第八子组G28中。同时,在第一行组G1和第二行组G2中以预定间隔隔开的Y电极可被划分到一个子组中,并且Y电极可以以不规则的方式分组。
图3示出了根据实施例的等离子体显示装置的驱动方法。根据该实施例,寻址阶段和维持阶段具有相同的长度,并且在所有子场中维持阶段具有相同的长度。
参照图3,一个场包括多个子场SF1至SFL。第一子场SF1至第L子场SFL分别包括寻址阶段EA111至EAL18和EA121至EAL28以及维持阶段S111至SL18和S121至SL28,在第一子场SF1至第L子场SFL的寻址阶段EA11至EAL8中使用选择擦除方法。此外,如图2中所描述的,多个行电极X1至Xn和Y1至Yn被划分成第一行组G1和第二行组G2,第一行组G1和第二行组G2分别被划分成多个子组G11至G18和G21至G28。
有选择写方法和选择擦除方法能够用来在多个放电室中选择发光放电室和不发光放电室。选择写方法选择发光放电室并形成恒定的壁电压。选择擦除方法选择不发光放电室并擦除形成的壁电荷。也就是说,选择写方法通过对放电室寻址放电将其设置成发光室状态,从而在该放电室中形成壁电荷,而选择擦除方法通过对放电室寻址放电将其设置成不发光室状态,从而擦除形成在该放电室中的壁电荷。根据这些方法,用于形成壁电压的寻址放电将称为“写放电”,而用于擦除壁电荷的寻址放电将称为“擦除放电”。
参照图3,重置阶段R被直接设置在具有选择擦除方法的寻址阶段EA111至EAL18和EA121至EAL28的第一子场SF1至第L子场SFL中设置在最前面的第一子场SF1的寻址阶段EA111之前,使得所有放电室通过重置阶段R被初始化并被设置成发光室状态。也就是说,在重置阶段R中,所有放电室被初始化并被设置成发光室状态,并且被设置成能够在寻址阶段EAL中执行擦除放电的室状态。
然后,在第一子场SF1中,对第一行组G1和第二行组G2的各第一子组至第八子组G11至G18和G21至G28顺次执行寻址阶段EA111至EAL18和EA121至EAL28以及维持阶段S111至SL18和S121至SL28。在第一行组G1的各子场SF1至SFL中,从第一子组G11至第八子组G18执行寻址阶段EA111至EAL18以及维持阶段S111至SL18,在第二行组G2的各子场SF1至SFL中,从第八子组G28至第一子组G21执行寻址阶段EA128至EAL21以及维持阶段S128至SL21。也就是说,在第一行组G1的第k子场SFk中,执行第i子组G1i的寻址阶段EAk1i然后执行第i子组G1i的维持阶段Sk1i(这里,k是1至L范围内的整数,i是1至8范围内的整数)。接着,执行第(i+1)子组G1(i+1)的寻址阶段EAk1(i+1)和维持阶段Sk1(i+1)。在第二行组G2的第k子场SFk中,执行第(i+1)子组G2(i+1)的寻址阶段EAk2(i+1),然后执行第(i+1)子组G2(i+1)的维持阶段Sk2(i+1)。接着,执行第i子组G2i的寻址阶段EAk2i和维持阶段Sk2i。此外,在第k子场SFk中,在执行第一行组G1的第i子组G1i的维持阶段Sk1i的同时,执行第二行组G2的第[8-(i-1)]子组G2(8-(i-1))的寻址阶段EAk2(8-(i-1))。在第k子场SFk中,在执行第二行组G2的第[8-(i-1)]子组G2(8-(i-1))的维持阶段Sk2(8-(i-1)的同时,执行第一行组G1的第(i+1)子组G1(i+1)的寻址阶段EAk1(i+1)。
然而,如图3所示,在第k子场SFk中执行第二行组G2的第1子组G21的维持阶段Sk21的同时,在第(k+1)子场SF(k+1)中,执行第一行组G1的第1子组G11的寻址阶段EA(k+1)11。
在图3中,在第二行组G2中,从第八子组G28至第一子组G21执行寻址阶段EAk28至EAk21以及维持阶段S128至SL21。然而,与图3不同的是,在第二行组G2中,以与第一行组G1中相同的方式,可以从第一子组G21至第八子组G28执行寻址阶段EAk21至EAk28以及维持阶段S121至SL28。此外,在第一行组G1和第二行组G2中,可以以与图3中示出的顺序不同的顺序执行寻址阶段和维持阶段。
接着,将详细描述第一行组G1的各子场SF1至SFL。由于对于各子场SF1至SFL中的每个,寻址阶段和维持阶段具有基本相同的操作,所以将只描述第k子场SFk的操作(这里,k为1至L范围内的整数)。
在第一行组G1的第k子场SFk中,在第一子组G11的寻址阶段EAk11中,在第一子组G11的发光室中将被设置成不发光室的放电室中产生擦除放电,因此壁电荷被擦除。在维持阶段SK11中,第一子组G11的其它发光室维持放电。然后,在第二子组G12的寻址阶段EAk12中,在第二子组G12的发光室中将被设置成不发光室的放电室中产生擦除放电,因此壁电荷被擦除。在维持阶段SK12中,第二子组G12的其它发光室维持放电。此外,第一子组G11的发光室维持放电。
以这样的方式,在其它子组G13至G18中执行寻址阶段EAk13至EAk18和维持阶段SK13至Sk18。在第i子组G1i的维持阶段SK1i中,第i子组G1i、第一至第(i-1)子组G11至G1(i-1)以及第(i+1)至第八子组G1(i+1)至G18的发光室维持放电。在第k子场SFk的各寻址阶段EAk11至EAk1(i-1)中,第一子组至第(i-1)子组G11至G1(i-1)的发光室没有经历擦除放电,在第(k-1)子场SF(k-1)的各寻址阶段EA(k-1)1(i+1)至EA(k-1)18中,第(i+1)至第八子组G1(i+1)至G18的发光室没有经历擦除放电。此外,第i子组G1i的发光室经历维持放电直到维持阶段Sk1(i-1),即直到第(k+1)子场SF(k+1)的第i子组G1i的寻址阶段EA(k+1)1i之前。也就是说,第i子组G1i的发光室在整个八个维持阶段中维持放电。
这样,在所有子场SF1至SFL中,对各子组G11至G18执行寻址阶段EA211至EA218,…,EAL11至EAL18和维持阶段S213至S218,…,SL11至SL18。对于以这种方式操作的放电室,在各子场SF1至SFL中,被设置成发光室的放电室在重置阶段R中执行维持放电,直到放电室通过擦除放电被设置成不发光室。当放电室通过擦除放电变为不发光室时,放电室在相应的子场之后不维持放电。因此,各子场SF1至SFL具有与各子场SF1至SFL的八个维持阶段的长度之和相对应的权值。
当第八子组G18的维持阶段SL18被施加到子场SFL时,维持放电在第一子组G11中已执行八次,在第二子组G12中已执行七次,在第三子组G13中已执行六次,在第四子组G14中已执行五次,在第五子组G15中已执行四次。此外,在第六子组G16中已执行三次,在第七子组G17中已执行两次,在第八子组G18中已执行一次。
因此,第一子组G11至第八子组G18可具有相同数目的维持放电。为此,第一行组G1的最后子场SFL可具有擦除阶段ER11至ER17和附加的维持阶段SA11至SA18。
更具体地讲,在后面的擦除阶段之前维持放电执行八次的第一子组G11可不必经历附加的维持放电。因此,在擦除阶段ER11中,形成在第一子组G11的发光室中的壁电荷被擦除。然后,第一子组G11至第八子组G18的发光室在附加的维持阶段SA12中发光。此时,由于形成在第一子组G11的发光室中的壁电荷在擦除阶段ER11中被擦除,所以在附加的维持放电阶段SA12中第二子组G12至第八子组G18的发光室中执行一次附加的维持放电。
此外,因为由于附加的维持阶段SA12而执行八次维持放电的第二子组G12可以不必经历附加的维持放电,所以形成在第二子组G12的发光室中的壁电荷在擦除阶段ER12中被擦除。然后,第一子组G11至第八子组G18的发光室在附加的维持阶段SA13中发光。此时,由于形成在第一子组G11和第二子组G12的发光室中的壁电荷在各擦除阶段ER11至ER12中被擦除,所以在附加的维持阶段SA13中第三子组G13至第八子组G18的发光室中执行一次附加的维持放电。
此外,因为由于附加的维持阶段SA13而在第三子组G13中执行八次维持放电的第三子组G13可以不必经历附加的维持放电,所以形成在第三子组G13的发光室中的壁电荷在擦除阶段ER13中被擦除。然后,第一子组G11至第八子组G18的发光室在附加的维持放电阶段SA14中发光。此时,由于形成在第一子组G11至第三子组G13的发光室中的壁电荷在各擦除阶段ER11至ER13中被擦除,所以在附加的维持阶段SA14中第四子组G14至第八子组G18的发光室中执行一次附加的维持放电。
在第八子组G18的附加的阶段SA18之后可以设置擦除阶段ER18,以擦除第八子组G18的壁电荷。另外,重置阶段R被施加到连续场的第一子场SF1,所以可以不形成第八子组G18的擦除阶段ER18。擦除操作也可与寻址操作相似地在擦除阶段ER11至ER18中顺次施加到各子组的每行电极,或者可以同时施加到各行组的整个行电极。
现在将描述第二行组G2的子场SF1至SFL。第二行组G2的各子场SF1至SFL的结构基本等同于第一行组G1的各子场SF1至SFL的结构。但是,如前所述,在第二行组G2的各子场SF1至SFL中,从第八子组G28至第一子组G21施加寻址阶段EA128-EA121,…,EAL28至EAL21,在第二行组G2的最后子场SFL中,也从第八子组G28至第一子组G21施加擦除阶段ER21至ER28。
等离子体显示装置的这样的驱动方法能够以如图4所示的子场来描述。在图4中,一个场由19个子场SF1至SF19形成。在图4中示出的是,子组G11至G18以及G28至G21分别具有形成一个场的多个子场SF1至SF19,多个子场按时间彼此移位。在时间上移位的量与一个子组G1i或G2i的寻址阶段EAk1i或EAk2i与一个子组G1i或G2i的维持阶段Sk1i或Sk2i之和相对应。
在子组G1i和G2i之一的寻址阶段EAk1i或EAk2i的长度与子组G1i和G2i的维持阶段Sk1i或Sk2i的长度相对应的情况下,第二行组G2的各子场SF1至SFL的起点移位第一行组G1的各子场SF1至SFL的起点和寻址阶段EAk1i或EAk2i之间的时间。
因此,在第一行组G1的行电极的寻址阶段中,第二行组G2的行电极能够被施加维持阶段,在第二行组G2的行电极的寻址阶段中,第一行组G1的行电极能够被施加维持阶段。也就是说,能够在寻址阶段中施加维持阶段,而不划分寻址阶段和维持阶段,因而减小了子场的长度。此外,由于寻址阶段设置在各子组的维持阶段之间,所以在维持阶段中形成的初始粒子(primeparticle)在寻址阶段中能够有效地利用,使得扫描脉冲的宽度能够减小,因而获得高速扫描。
参照图5详细描述用于等离子体显示装置的驱动方法的驱动波形。
图5示出了根据图3的驱动方法的等离子体显示装置的驱动波形。在图5中,对于一个子场SFk,示出了第一行组G1的第一子组G11和第二子组G12以及第二行组G2的第七子组G27和第八子组G28。
如图5所示,在第一子组G11的寻址阶段EAk11中,扫描脉冲电压VSCL被顺次施加到第一子组G11的多个Y电极,而参考电压(在图5中,0V)被施加到第一子组G11的X电极。具有正电压的寻址脉冲(未示出)被施加到由施加有扫描脉冲的Y电极形成的发光室中将被选择为不发光室的室的A电极。此外,大于电压VSCL的电压VSCH被施加到没有施加扫描脉冲的Y电极,参考电压被施加到没有施加寻址脉冲的A电极。结果,在施加有扫描脉冲电压VSCL和正电压的寻址脉冲的发光室中产生擦除放电,因此形成在X电极和Y电极上的壁电荷被擦除,并且被设置成不发光室。
具有高电平电压(图5中的电压Vs)和低电平电压(图5中的0V)的维持脉冲被反相地施加到第一行组G1的多个X电极和第一子组G11至第八子组G18的多个Y电极,因此第一子组G11的发光室维持放电。也就是说,对X电极施加0V时,对Y电极施加电压Vs,并且对Y电极施加0V时,对X电极施加电压Vs。此时,紧挨着的前面的子场SF(k-1)的发光室中在寻址阶段EAk11没有经历擦除放电的室处于发光室状态,这样的发光室状态维持放电。
然后,在第二子组G12的寻址阶段EAk12中,扫描脉冲电压VSCL被顺次施加到第二子组G12的多个Y电极,而参考电压被施加到第一行组G1的X电极,具有正电压的寻址脉冲(未示出)被施加到由施加有扫描脉冲的Y电极形成的发光室中将被选择为不发光室的室的A电极。
此外,在维持阶段SK12中,维持脉冲被反相地施加到第一行组G1的多个X电极和第一子组G11至第八子组G18的多个Y电极,因此发光室维持放电。以这样的方式,对其他的子组G13至G18执行寻址阶段EAk13至EAk18和维持阶段Sk13至Sk18。
然后,在第一行组G1的第k子场SFk中,在执行第一子组G11的维持阶段Sk11的同时,执行第二行组G2的寻址阶段EAk28。在第二行组G2的第k子场SFk中,扫描脉冲电压VSCL被顺次施加到第八子组G28的多个Y电极,而参考电压被施加到第二行组G2的X电极,在第八子组G28的寻址阶段EAk28中,具有正电压的寻址脉冲(未示出)被施加到由施加有扫描脉冲的Y电极形成的发光室中将被选择为不发光室的室的A电极。
此外,在维持阶段SK28中,维持脉冲被反相地施加到第二行组G2的多个X电极和第一子组G21至第八子组G28的多个Y电极,因此发光室维持放电。此时,在第二行组G2的第k子场SFk中执行维持阶段Sk28的同时,对第一行组G1执行第二子组G12的寻址阶段EAk12。以这样的方式,对其他的子组G27至G21执行寻址阶段EAk27至EAk21和维持阶段Sk27至Sk21。
图6示出了根据实施例的利用图3的驱动方法来表示灰阶的方法。在图6中,一个场包括总共19个子场,各子场具有为32的权值。此外,在图6中,“SE”指在相应的子场中产生的擦除放电,因此发光室被设置成不发光室,“O”指发光室状态的子场。
如图6所示,当在第一子场SF1的寻址阶段中产生擦除放电,因此室变为不发光室时,在维持阶段中不产生维持放电,并且即使在接着的子场SF2至SF19中也不产生维持放电,因此表示灰阶0。接着,当在第二子场SF2的寻址阶段中产生擦除放电,因此室变为不发光室时,从第二子场SF2不产生维持放电,因此表示灰阶32。当在第二子场SF2的寻址阶段中不产生擦除放电,但在第三子场SF3的寻址阶段中产生擦除放电,因此发光室变为不发光室时,可表示灰阶64。也就是说,当通过第k子场的擦除放电而使发光室变为不发光室时,因为在发光室状态的放电室的第一至第(k-1)子场中连续产生维持放电,所以可最终表示灰阶32×(k-1)。也就是说,在灰阶0至灰阶628(=32×19)中,可表示与32的倍数相对应的灰阶。此时,可利用抖动来表示除32的倍数之外的灰阶。这种抖动是通过组合预定的灰阶来近似和平均表示预定区域中将被表示的灰阶的技术。因此,在预定像素区域中,可利用灰阶0和灰阶32来表示灰阶0和灰阶32之间的灰阶。
在该实施例中,所有室在第一子场SF1中处于发光室状态,直到在子组G11至G18和G21至G28的放电室中执行相应子组的寻址阶段。然后,在第一行组G1的第i子组G1i的放电室中,在总共(i-1)个不必要的维持阶段S111至S11(i-1)中产生维持放电,直到执行寻址阶段EA1i之前(这里,i是2至8的整数)。因而,在该实施例中,第一行组G1的第i子组G1i可以被设置成在第一子场SF1中在第1子组G11至第(i-1)子组G1(i-1)的维持阶段S111至S11(i-1)中不产生维持放电。相似地,第二行组G2的第(8-(i-1))子组G2(8-(i-1))的放电室可以被设置成在第八子组G28至第(8-(i-2))子组G2(8-(i-2))的维持阶段中不会出现维持放电。
这样,因为在多个子场SF1至SF19的相应子场中产生擦除放电,所以可不产生伪轮廓,使得通过在发光室状态的放电室变为不发光室之前的连续子场来表示灰阶。此外,因为在重置阶段R中被设置为发光室状态的放电室连续执行擦除放电,直到它们通过各子场SF1至SF19中的擦除放电被设置为不发光室,所以可需要至多一个放电来表示任何灰阶。因此,可减小根据擦除放电的功耗。但是,在不是通过子场的组合来表示低灰阶而是通过抖动来表示低灰阶的情况下,低灰阶表示的性能可能下降。这是因为与高灰阶的灰阶差相比,人眼可更有效地识别低灰阶的灰阶差。可参照图7来描述用于提高低灰阶表示的性能的方法。
图7示出了根据另一实施例的利用与图3的驱动方法相似的驱动方法来表示灰阶的方法。
如图7所示,子场SF1至SFL被划分成第一子场组和第二子场组。另外,为了提高低灰阶表示的性能,第一子场组的子场SF1、SF2、SF3、SF4、SF5和SF6的权值被分别设置为1、2、4、8、16和24。此时,通过抖动表示的低灰阶中的灰阶1、3、7、15、31和55可通过第一子场组的子场SF1至SF6的组合来精确表示。另外,当抖动用于这些灰阶时,可提高灰阶1至灰阶55之间的灰阶表示性能。
将参照图8A和图8B来描述第一组的子场SF1至SF6的权值的实现方法。
图8A和图8B分别示出了用于实现子场SF1至SF6的权值的方法。在图8A和图8B中,为了更好理解和易于描述,示出了第一行组G1的第一子组G11和第二子组G12。
如上所述,当第一行组G1和第二行组G2分别划分成八个子组G11至G18以及G21至G28时,各子场SF1至SF6的权值与各子场SF1至SF6中的八个维持阶段的长度之和相对应。例如,假定图5中示出的子场SFk的权值为32,各维持阶段SK11至SK18以及SK21至SK28的长度与子场SFk中的权值4相对应。此外,假定在各维持阶段SK11至SK18以及SK21至SK28中,四个维持脉冲施加到各X电极和Y电极。

由于如上所述在重置阶段R中定位具有权值1的子场SF1,所以各子组G1i或G2(8-(i-1))被设置成在相应的寻址阶段EA1i或者EA2(8-(i-1))之前的维持阶段Sk11至Sk1(i-1)或者Sk28至Sk2(8-(i-2))中不产生维持放电。因此,在相应的寻址阶段EA1i或者EA2(8-(i-1))之前的维持阶段Sk11至Sk1(i-1)或者Sk28至Sk2(8-(i-2))中,电压VSCH-VSCL可作为维持脉冲的低电平电压施加到各子组G1i或G2(8-(i-2))的Y电极。也就是说,如图8A所示,在第二子组G12的寻址阶段EA12之前的维持阶段S11中,电压VSCH-VSCL可作为维持脉冲的低电平电压施加到第二子组G12的Y电极。
这里,确定电压Vs和电压电压VSCH-VSCL之差Vs-(VSCH-VSCL),使得在电极X和Y之间可不产生维持放电。然后,当电压VSCH-VSCL可施加到Y电极时,在电极X和Y之间不产生维持放电。如果当电压Vs施加到X电极时在电极X和Y之间不产生维持放电,则保持X电极的壁电势大于Y电极的壁电势,因此即使当电压Vs施加到Y电极且0V施加到X电极时,也不再产生维持放电。以这样的方式,可实现具有权值1的子场。
此外,在第二行组G2的维持阶段SK28中,当单个维持脉冲施加到第八子组G28的Y电极时,电压VSCH-VSCL可作为维持脉冲的低电平电压施加到第八子组G28的Y电极,然后维持脉冲的电压Vs施加到X电极,除此之外,第二行组G2的驱动方法与第一行组G1的驱动方法基本相同。
此外,当维持脉冲施加到X电极时,电压VSCH-VSCL可作为维持脉冲的低电平电压施加到第二行组G2的其他维持阶段Sk27至Sk21的Y电极。可在从第七子组G27到第一子组G21的其他子组的发光室中控制维持放电。在该实施例中,可对于第一行组G1的第一子组G11描述权值。
权值2与任一行组G1或G2的各子组G11至G18或G21至G28的任一维持阶段SK1j的长度的一半相对应。因此,如图8B中所示,在第一行组G1的第k子场SFk中,在第一子组G11的维持阶段SK11中,当两个维持脉冲施加到第一子组G11的Y电极时,电压VSCH-VSCL作为维持脉冲的低电平电压施加到Y电极,然后维持脉冲的电压Vs施加到X电极。此外,即使在第一子组G11的其他维持阶段SK12至SK18中,当维持脉冲的电压Vs施加到X电极时,电压VSCH-VSCL作为维持脉冲的低电平电压施加到的Y电极。在第二子组G12的维持阶段SK12中,当两个维持脉冲施加到Y电极时,电压VSCH-VSCL作为维持脉冲的低电平电压施加到第二子组G12的Y电极,然后维持脉冲的电压Vs施加到X电极。此外,在第二子组G12的其他维持阶段SK13至SK18以及第(k+1)子场SF(k+1)的第一子组G11的维持阶段S(k+1)11中,电压VSCH-VSCL作为维持脉冲的低电平电压施加到第二子组G12的Y电极。在第二子组G12的寻址阶段EA12之前的维持阶段S11中,电压VSCH-VSCL可作为维持脉冲的低电平电压施加到第二子组G12的Y电极。以这样的方式,可实现具有权值2的子场。
在第一行组G1的第k子场SFk中,在第一子组G11的维持阶段SK12至SK18中,当四个维持脉冲施加到第一子组G11的Y电极时,电压VSCH-VSCL作为维持脉冲的低电平电压施加到Y电极,然后维持脉冲的电压Vs施加到X电极,从而可实现具有权值4的子场。然后,在第一行组G1的第k子场SFk中,在第一子组G11的维持阶段SK11和SK12中,当四个维持脉冲施加到第一子组G11的Y电极时,电压VSCH-VSCL作为维持脉冲的低电平电压施加到Y电极,然后在第一子组G11的其他维持阶段SK13和SK18中,维持脉冲的电压Vs施加到X电极,从而可实现具有权值8的子场。
此外,假定图5中示出的子场SFk中具有权值32,当对第二行组G2执行第一子组G21的寻址阶段时,在第一行组G1的所有子组G11至G18中产生维持放电。权值24可通过这样的子场实现,在该子场中,当对第二行组G2执行第一子组G21的寻址阶段时,维持放电只产生在第一行组G1的子组G11至G18中的六个子场G11至G16中,权值16可通过这样的子场实现,在该子场中,当对第二行组G2执行第一子组G21的寻址阶段时,维持放电只产生在第一行组G1的子组G11至G18中的四个子场G11至G14中。权值8可通过这样的子场实现,在该子场中,维持放电只产生在第一行组G1的子组G11至G18中的两个子场G11至G12中,权值4可通过这样的子场实现,在该子场中,维持放电只产生在第一行组G1的子组G11至G18中的一个子场G11中。小于4的权值可通过这样的子场实现,在该子场中,维持放电只产生在第一行组G1的子组G11至G18中的一个子场G11的一部分中。
在图8A和图8B中,Y电极施加有电压VSCH-VSCL作为维持脉冲的低电平电压,使得在电极X和Y之间不产生维持放电,这只是一个示例。因此,Y电极可浮置,使得在电极X和Y之间不产生维持放电。当Y电极浮置时,Y电极的电压根据X电极的电压而改变,因此X电极和Y电极之间的电压差减小,因而发光室不维持放电。X电极和Y电极之一可被连续施加高电平电压Vs或低电平电压0V。
根据一些实施例的驱动方法,重置放电必须是强放电,以在第一子场SF1的寻址阶段之前的重置阶段R中将所有放电室初始化,从而将放电室设置成发光室状态。在这种情况下,因为黑色屏幕发亮,所以会降低对比度。此外,只在重置阶段R中充分地产生壁电荷以将所有放电室设置成发光室是困难的。将参照图9和图10详细地描述能够提高对比度的稳定地产生擦除放电的方法。
图9和图10示出了等离子体显示装置的驱动方法。
如图9所示,在第一子场SF1’的寻址阶段WA11和WA12中使用选择写方法。此外,在第一子场SF1’中,多个行电极的各组G1和G2没有分成子组,在寻址阶段WA11和WA12之一中从由多个行电极形成的放电室中选择发光室。这样,在选择写方法的具有WA11或WA12的子场SF1’中,在寻址阶段WA11或WA12之前,执行重置阶段R’,以将发光室初始化成不发光室。也就是说,不同于上述的选择擦除方法的在寻址阶段EA111至EAL18和EA121至EAL28之前的重置阶段R中放电室被初始化成发光室状态,在寻址阶段WA11或WA12之前的重置阶段R’中将发光室初始化成不发光室。
更详细地讲,在第一子场SF1’的重置阶段R’中,第一行组和第二行组G1和G2的放电室被初始化,并被设置成不发光室状态,使得在WA11和WA12中可产生写放电。在寻址阶段WA11中,在第一行组G1的放电室中将被设置为发光室的放电室中产生写放电,因此产生壁电荷。然后,在维持阶段S11中,第一行组G1的发光室维持放电。然后,形成在第一行组G1的发光室上的壁电荷被擦除。只在第一行组G1的发光室中的第一子组G11的维持阶段S11中发光。
接着,在在寻址阶段WA12中,在第二行组G2的放电室中将被设置为发光室的放电室中产生写放电,因此产生壁电荷。然后,在维持阶段S12中,第二行组G2的发光室维持放电,因此壁电荷被擦除。
这样,在寻址阶段WA11和WA12中,对第一行组和第二行组G1和G2的多个行电极顺次执行写放电,因而选择发光室,然后在维持阶段S11和S12中维持放电。以这样的方式,在执行选择擦除方法的具有寻址阶段的子场SF2至SFL之前,在发光室的各电极上可以充分地形成壁电荷。
同时,为了在第一子场SF1’中擦除在各组G1和G2的维持阶段S11和S12之后形成在各组G1和G2的发光室中的壁电荷,在各组G1和G2的维持阶段S11和S12中将最后的维持脉冲的脉宽设置得比其他维持脉冲的脉宽窄,使得不形成壁电荷。此外,利用行电极的电压紧接着最后的维持放电脉冲逐渐改变的波形(例如,以斜坡图案改变的波形)可擦除由维持放电形成的壁电荷。
为了在选择写方法的紧靠在寻址阶段WA11或WA12之前的重置阶段R’中将发光室初始化成不发光室,在重置阶段R’中电压可逐渐增大或逐渐减小。也就是说,这可以通过多个Y电极的电压在重置阶段R’中逐渐增加再逐渐减小来实现。换句话讲,在多个Y电极的电压逐渐增加再逐渐减小的同时,通过擦除当X电极和Y电极之间产生弱重置放电时的放电室上的壁电荷来使发光室初始化。因此,在重置阶段R’中不产生强放电,因而提高了对比度。
相似于图9中示出的实施例,可以不进行擦除在各组G1和G2的维持阶段S11和S12之后形成在各组G1和G2的发光室中的壁电荷的操作。
更详细地讲,如图10所示,在第一子场SF1″的寻址阶段WA11′中,在第一行组G1的放电室中将被设置为发光室的放电室中产生写放电,因此在其上形成壁电荷。然后,在维持阶段S11′中,发光室维持放电。此时,设置成最少维持放电数,例如,在维持阶段S11′中产生一次或两次维持放电。
接着,在第一子场SF1″的寻址阶段WA12′中,在第二行组G2的放电室中将被设置为发光室的放电室中产生写放电,因此产生壁电荷。然后,在维持阶段S12′的部分时间段S121(未示出)中,第一行组G1和第二行组G2的发光室维持放电。此外,在维持阶段S12′的另一部分时间段S122(未示出)中,第一行组G1的发光室不维持放电,而第二行组G2的发光室维持放电。因此,设置成在维持阶段S12′的另一部分时间段S122中的第二行组G2的发光室中发生的维持放电数目与在维持阶段S12′中的第一行组G1的发光室中发生的维持放电数目相同。
此外,当不通过两个维持阶段S11′和S12′来表示第一子场SF1″的权值时,第一行组G1和第二行组G2的发光室在维持阶段S12′的另一部分时间段S122中可附加维持放电。
此外,根据一些实施例,在一个场的最后子场SFL中,可以执行或者可以不执行第一行组G1和第二行组G2的擦除阶段ER112至ER118和ER122至ER128以及附加维持阶段SA12至SA18和SA22至SA28。当不执行擦除阶段ER112至ER118和ER122至ER128以及附加维持阶段SA12至SA18和SA22至SA28时,多个场的各组G1和G2中的各子组G11至G18和G21至G28的寻址次序改变。从而,各行组可维持放电相同的次数。
此外,在一些实施例中,设置成执行第一行组G1和第二行组G2的擦除阶段ER112至ER118和ER122至ER128之后不产生维持放电,从而各行组可维持放电基本相同的时间。也就是说,如图8A和图8B所示,在执行第一行组G1和第二行组G2的擦除阶段ER112至ER118和ER122至ER128之后,当维持脉冲的电压Vs施加到X电极时,电压VSCH-VSCL施加到Y电极,而当0V施加到X电极时,电压Vs施加到Y电极。在执行第一行组G1和第二行组G2的擦除阶段ER112至ER118和ER122至ER128之后,不产生维持放电。
例如,如果在选择擦除方法使用0.7μs的扫描脉冲宽度的情况下驱动1024行电极,在一个维持阶段中输入八个维持脉冲,一个维持脉冲(具有高电平电压和低电平电压的脉冲)输入5.6μs,则维持阶段的长度为44.8μs(=5.6μs×8行),而寻址阶段的长度为44.8μs(=0.7μs×64行)。因此,子场的长度为716.8μs(=44.8μs×16)。此外,当选择写方法使用1.3μs的扫描脉冲宽度,且重置阶段的长度给定为350μs时,寻址阶段的长度为665.6μs(=1.3μs×512行)。在权值为1的情况下,假定在维持阶段S11中施加1个维持脉冲,在维持阶段S12中施加1.5个维持脉冲,则维持阶段S11+S12的总长度为14μs(=5.6μs×2.5行)。因此,子场SF1的长度为1695.2μs(=350μs+665.6μs×2+14μs)。
因此,由于一个场中与选择擦除方法的子场相关的时间为14970.8μs(=16666-1695.2),所以在一个场中可使用20(=14970.8/716.8)个选择擦除方法的子场。
此外,图5中交替地具有电压Vs和0V的维持脉冲以相反的相位施加到X电极和Y电极,这只是一个示例。因此,也可采用其他形状的维持脉冲。例如,在将X电极偏置为0V的同时,可将电压-Vs和电压Vs施加到Y电极。
如上所述,根据实施例,多个行电极可划分成第一行组和第二行组,各行组可再划分成多个子组。此外,在一个场的各子场中,可在第一行组和第二行组的各子组中执行寻址阶段,可在各子组的寻址阶段之间执行维持阶段。此外,可在第一行组的各子组中执行维持阶段的同时,在第二行组的各子组中执行寻址阶段,可在第二行组的各子组中执行维持阶段的同时,在第一行组的各子组中执行寻址阶段。这样,由于在维持阶段中形成的初始粒子能够充分地使用在设置在各子组的维持阶段之间的寻址阶段中,所以扫描脉冲的宽度变短,因而提高了扫描速度,可在寻址阶段中进行维持阶段的操作,因而减小了子场的长度。
通过选择擦除方法来驱动各子场的寻址阶段,通过直到在相应的子场中产生擦除放电之前的连续子场来表示灰阶,因而可以不产生伪轮廓。由于仅仅产生一个擦除放电来表示任何灰阶,所以可降低功耗。
当通过选择写方法来驱动各子场的第一寻址阶段时,可形成足够的壁电荷,因此在通过选择擦除方法驱动下一子场时,可稳定地产生擦除放电。在选择写方法的子场的重置阶段中施加逐渐增大或逐渐减小的电压,因此在重置阶段中不产生强放电,因而提高了对比度。
虽然已经结合当前认为是实用的具体实施例描述了本发明,但是应该明白,本发明不限于所公开的实施例。
Claims (20)
1、一种驱动等离子体显示装置的方法,所述等离子体显示装置具有多个行电极、多个列电极以及多个放电室,所述方法包括:
将帧划分成多个子场;
将所述多个行电极划分成第一行组和第二行组:
将所述第一行组划分成多个第一子组;
将所述第二行组划分成多个第二子组;
在第一子场的第一时间段中,从第一子组中选择将不发光的一个或多个放电室,其中,所述第一子组的其余放电室保持发光;
在所述第一时间段中,第二子组的一个或多个发光室维持放电;
在第一子场的第二时间段中,从第二子组中选择将不发光的一个或多个放电室,其中,所述第二子组的其余放电室保持发光;
在所述第二时间段中,第一子组的一个或多个发光室维持放电。
2、如权利要求1所述的方法,还包括:
在第一子场的第三时间段中,从另一第一子组中选择将不发光的一个或多个放电室,其中,所述另一第一子组的其余放电室保持发光;
在所述第三时间段中,第二子组的一个或多个发光室维持放电;
在第一子场的第四时间段中,从另一第二子组中选择将不发光的一个或多个放电室,其中,所述另一第二子组的其余放电室保持发光;
在所述第四时间段中,第一子组的一个或多个发光室维持放电。
3、如权利要求2所述的方法,还包括在选择所述不发光室之前将所述多个放电室初始化成发光室。
4、如权利要求2所述的方法,还包括:
在第二子场中,从第一行组的放电室中选择发光室,并对所选择的第一行组的发光室维持放电;
在所述第二子场中,从第二行组的放电室中选择发光室,并对所选择的第二行组的发光室维持放电。
5、如权利要求4所述的方法,还包括,在所述第二子场中,在从所述第一行组的放电室中选择发光室之前将所述多个放电室初始化成不发光室。
6、如权利要求5所述的方法,其中,在所述第二子场中,所述第一行组的发光室在时间段的第一部分中保持不维持放电,其中,所述第二行组的发光室维持放电。
7、如权利要求6所述的方法,其中,在所述第二子场中,所述第一行组的发光室在时间段的其余部分中维持放电,其中,所述第二行组的发光室维持放电。
8、如权利要求1所述的方法,其中:
在所述第一时间段的部分中,第二组的发光室保持不维持放电;
在所述第二时间段的部分中,第一组的发光室保持不维持放电。
9、如权利要求1所述的方法,其中,在所述第二时间段中,另一第二子组保持不维持放电。
10、如权利要求1所述的方法,其中:
所述多个行电极包括多个第一电极和多个第二电极,所述第一电极和所述第二电极被构造成执行显示操作;
对所述第二子组的一个或多个发光室维持放电的步骤包括将第一维持脉冲和第二维持脉冲施加到所述第二子组的多个第一电极和多个第二电极;
对所述第一子组的一个或多个发光室维持放电的步骤包括将第一维持脉冲和第二维持脉冲施加到所述第一子组的多个第一电极和多个第二电极;
所述第一维持脉冲和所述第二维持脉冲具有相位相反的高电平电压和低电平电压。
11、如权利要求1所述的方法,其中,所述多个行电极包括多个第一电极和多个第二电极,所述第一电极和所述第二电极被构造成执行显示操作,所述方法还包括:
对所述第二行组的一个或多个发光室维持放电的步骤包括:在将第一电压施加到多个所述第二子组的多个第一电极的同时,将至少一个交替地具有高电平电压和低电平电压的维持脉冲施加到多个所述第二电极;
对所述第一行组的一个或多个发光室维持放电的步骤包括:在将第一电压施加到多个所述第二子组的多个第一电极的同时,将至少一个交替地具有高电平电压和低电平电压的维持脉冲施加到多个所述第二电极。
12、如权利要求1所述的方法,其中,一些子场的权值与一个或多个其它子场的权值不同。
13、如权利要求1所述的方法,其中,
所述第一行组包括设置在所述等离子体显示装置的较上区域中的行电极,
所述第二行组包括设置在所述等离子体显示装置的较下区域中的行电极。
14、一种等离子体显示装置,包括:

多个行电极,被构造成执行显示操作;多个列电极,形成在与所述行电极交叉的方向上;
多个室,形成在所述多个行电极和所述多个列电极的交叉点附近;
控制器,被构造成:
将场划分成多个子场;
将所述多个行电极划分成第一行组和第二行组;
将行电极的第一行组划分成多个第一子组;
将行电极的第二行组划分成多个第二子组;
驱动器,被构造成驱动所述多个行电极和所述多个列电极,
其中,所述驱动器被构造成:
在第一子场的第一时间段中,从第一子组中选择将不发光的一个或多个放电室,其中,所述第一子组的其余放电室保持发光;
在所述第一时间段中,第二子组的一个或多个发光室维持放电;
在第一子场的第二时间段中,从第二子组中选择将不发光的一个或多个放电室,其中,所述第二子组的其余放电室保持发光;
在所述第二时间段中,第一子组的一个或多个发光室维持放电。
15、如权利要求14所述的装置,其中,所述驱动器还被构造成:
在第二子场中,从第一行组的放电室中选择发光室,并对所选择的第一行组的发光室维持放电;
在所述第二子场中,从第二行组的放电室中选择发光室,并对所选择的第二行组的发光室维持放电。
16、如权利要求14所述的装置,其中,所述驱动器还被构造成,在所述第二子场中,在从第一行组的放电室中选择发光室之前将所述多个放电室初始化成不发光室。
17、一种驱动等离子体显示装置的方法,所述等离子体显示装置具有多个行电极、多个列电极以及多个放电室,所述方法包括:
将帧划分成多个子场;
将所述多个行电极划分成第一行组和第二行组:
将所述第一行组划分成多个第一子组,将所述第二行组划分成多个第二子组;
在第一子场中,从所述第一行组中选择发光室,并对所选择的第一行组的发光室维持放电;
在所述第一子场中,从所述第二行组中选择发光室,并对所选择的第二行组的发光室维持放电;
在第二子场的第一时间段中,从第一子组中选择不发光室,并对第二子组的发光室维持放电;
在第二子场的第二时间段中,从第二子组中选择不发光室,并对第一子组的发光室维持放电。
18、如权利要求17所述的方法,还包括:
在第二子场的第三时间段中,从另一第一子组中选择不发光室,并对第二子组的发光室维持放电;
在第二子场的第四时间段中,从另一第二子组中选择不发光室,并对至少一个第一子组的发光室维持放电。
19、如权利要求18所述的方法,还包括,在所述第一子场中,在选择所述发光室之前将所述多个放电室初始化成不发光室。
20、如权利要求19所述的方法,其中,所述多个行电极包括多个第一电极和多个第二电极,所述第一电极和所述第二电极被构造成执行显示操作,其中,将所述多个放电室初始化成不发光室的步骤包括:逐渐增加所述第一电极和所述第二电极之间的电压差以及逐渐减小所述第一电极和所述第二电极之间的电压差。
