Abstract

Description
发明领域
本发明涉及一种驱动等离子显示板的方法和装置,其中等离子显示板包括每个都对应于象素的放电单元,象素响应于包含场的视频信号,其中每个场由多个子场形成,包括施加维持水平的信号以导致放电单元中的维持放电从而发光,并且执行误差扩散过程。另外,本发明涉及包括上述装置的等离子显示板装置。
发明背景
近年来,对薄型显示装置产生了需求,这种需求还连带着显示板尺寸的增大。等离子显示板(以下简称为“PDP”)预期成为取代常规阴极射线管的下一代最重要的显示装置之一,因为PDP可以很容易地实现显示板厚度和重量的减少并提供了平板形显示屏形状和大的显示屏面积。
在PDP中,进行表面放电,在前玻璃基底的内表面上形成一对电极,并在板内填充稀有气体。当对电极施加电压时,在形成于电极表面上的保护层和介电层的表面发生表面放电,由此产生紫外线。在后玻璃基底的内表面上涂覆三基色红、绿和篮荧光材料,并且通过激励响应于紫外线的荧光材料的发光进行彩色显示。
PDP包括多个列电极(地址电极)和与列电极交叉布置的多行电极。每对行、列电极被对着放电空间的介电层覆盖,并具有一种在行列电极对交叉点处形成对应于一个象素的放电单元的结构。因为PDP利用放电现象提供发光显示,所以每个放电单元只有两种状态:进行发光的状态和不进行发光的状态。子场法用于通过PDP提供半色调光度显示。在子场法中,一个场的显示周期被分成N个子场,对每个子场分配一个具有对应于象素数据(N位)的每位字数权重的持续周期的发光周期,并且进行发光驱动。
放电通过调节象素组成的单元的行列电极之间的电压而实现。改变放电光量以调节单元中的放电数量。通过驱动矩阵式写入脉冲、扫描脉冲和抹除脉冲而获得整个屏幕,其中写入脉冲用于向各个单元的行、列电极输入数字视频信号,扫描脉冲用于扫描维持放电的维持脉冲,抹除脉冲用于终止放电单元的放电。另外,通过在显示整个图象所需的预定时间微分每个单元的放电数量而进行灰度定标。
在每个单元被驱动到最大水平的情况下由亮度确定屏幕的光度。为了增大光度,必须将驱动电路构造成单元的放电时间可以在形成屏幕的预定时间内尽可能长地维持。表示亮暗差异的对比度由背景的亮度和光度如照度决定。要增大对比度,背景必须很暗,且光度必须增大。
在普通的PDP显示***中,视频信号信息帧或场作为一组子场显示。通常根据地址显示分离(ADS)的驱动方式驱动子场。每个子场有其自己的地址、维持和抹除周期。抹除周期在完整的显示区上产生少量的光。象素元的有源寻址在被寻址的象素元中产生一次闪光。只有维持周期根据需要受维持脉冲数控制地产生光束。每个维持脉冲产生两次表现为一对闪光的放电。
每个子场的光度值比依赖于在子场产生过程中选取的子场分布。每帧或场的维持脉冲的总数可以依据参数,如电源负荷、子场图象负荷和板温度等而变化。处理这些输入参数并由微控制器计算每帧或场的维持脉冲的总数。在此过程中每帧或场的维持脉冲总数必须被转换成每帧的维持水平(SF维持水平),表示成维持脉冲的离散数。在整个过程中必须维持精确的子场分布,同时必须保留子场的光度比。否则将出现图象后生现象。
但是,用在ADS***中的常规的子场分布并不总是精确的。它们不仅具有有限的灰度,而且还在它们的表象中存在失配。
对于具有有限数量的子场或大量抖动的板,SF维持水平可能会有相当大的量化误差。当显示例如从暗到亮的灰度条时,这会导致沿灰度产生的非单调上升的光,造成可视PDP成像的后生现象。
US6144364公开了一种显示器驱动方法,该方法驱动显示器在其屏幕上进行依赖于在每个子场中形成1个场的发光时间的长短的灰度显示,此处,1个场是显示一个图象的时间,N个子场形成1个场,每个子场包括地址显示时间,其中根据将在子场内发光的所有象素形成壁电荷,和等于发光时间并确定光度水平的维持时间。该显示器驱动方法包括在1个场内设置近似恒定的每个子场的维持时间的步骤以及利用从0灰度水平到N灰度水平的N+1个的灰度水平在显示器上显示图象数据。
在US6175194B1中描述了一种驱动等离子显示板的方法,其中用误差扩散和维持脉冲控制来减小噪声并防止错误的放电,从而提高显示质量。
在US5898414A中公开了一种允许有高分辨率和多级灰度水平并造成察觉不到的闪烁的显示装置。一帧被分成j个子帧或由j个子帧组成,根据预定子帧的光度水平由子帧产生光,以便表现为中等灰度的画面。对可以独立控制一帧内每个子帧期间执行的显示这一事实给予强调。在j个子帧中与低阶加权位相关的k个子帧期间执行隔行扫描显示,并在与高阶加权位相关的j-k个子帧期间执行非隔行扫描显示。寻址扫描时间与小权重有关的子帧之比较大,寻址扫描时间与整个帧的比例非常大。如果可以如上所述地减短寻址扫描时间,将会产生极大的影响。而且,就在其间执行隔行扫描显示的子帧而言确定的光度水平如此之低,以致于限制了所述的减短对整个画面的影响。
US6052101A描述了一种等离子显示装置的驱动电路及其灰度实施方法。该方法包括步骤:根据相对光度比把一帧的总水平行分成X×Y个子帧,将每一帧分成X个子帧并对每个子帧分配Y个不同的子帧,以及供给对应的灰度数据,同时,通过重复驱动X个子帧并扫描该X个子帧而在从第一水平电极行到最后第N个水平电极行的一个水平周期内依次抹去包含在分配给每个子帧的Y个不同子帧中的每个X×Y水平行,由此实现2X-Y灰度的显示画面。至少提供两个扫描和维持驱动器,并由驱动器把一帧分成一个或多个子场,给每个子场分配不同的子帧并再重复驱动X个子场。
发明概述
本发明的目的在于提高灰度水平和颜色表现以改善PDP图象质量并提供这种改善的可行措施。为此,本发明提供了一种由独立权利要求限定的PDP驱动。从属权利要求限定了优选实施例。
本发明的新技术可以描述为维持水平误差扩散(SED)。通过这种技术,略去了维持水平的产生中的量化误差,而把子场维持水平、以下称作SF维持水平中的剩余误差传递到下一帧并结合到下一个SF维持水平的产生中。
注意,在本文中,术语“场”也可以指帧,术语“子场”(SF)也可以指子帧。但本发明也包括视频信号的帧由子帧组成,场由子场组成的情形。
对于给定的子场分布,只有对于非常特殊的维持水平才可以以很小的量化误差显示所有的子场。当自适应调节有效时,由于各个SF维持水平中的量化误差,维持水平通常不能精确地映射。灵敏的维持水平调节可以通过实施误差扩散算法避免这些误差。
当对于每个子帧向下一帧转交SF维持水平量化误差时,由于人体视觉***(HVS)的积分特性,可以忽略总的量化误差。
最好下一帧是后续帧。
可以通过利用本发明的SED技术提高PDP显示器的灰度显示。在自适应光度调节中,此项技术显著提高了PDP图象质量,同时将维持水平移到光度量化误差。本发明的SED技术可以用于所有的PDP驱动方案。本发明SED技术的实施仅需要对给定PDP显示***的构造做微小的软件修正。因此,本发明提供了一种可以与其它PDP图象改进算法相结合的可行方案,并且因而不增加成本。
当前场的特定子场的维持水平量化误差被传递到下一场的对应子场。因此,该技术与任何施加的子场分布无关。
在本发明的另一优选实施例中,其中的施加步骤包括SF维持水平的产生,传递的SF维持水平量化误差被结合到下一帧的SF维持水平的产生中。
特别是,把SF维持水平的量化误差加入到下一场的所需SF维持水平中。
在本发明的另一优选实施例中,根据总的维持水平信号和SF分布产生所需的SF维持水平。根据子场分布比例在子场上划分总的维持水平。对量化过程四舍五入,作为四舍五入步骤的结果,获得的实际SF维持水平为整数,并且所需SF维持水平的剩余部分作为量化误差。特别是,通常利用微控制器的计算产生所需的SF维持水平。
另外,可以利用自适应光度调节,其中本发明的SED技术显著改善了PDP图象质量,同时将维持水平移到光度量化误差。

优选实施例的描述
在图1所示的框图中展示了维持水平误差扩散(SED)技术的实施。图1中展示了视频处理器VP,子场处理器SFP,子场负荷单元SL,子场调换单元ST,等离子显示板PDP,维持水平调节器SLR和计时&控制发生器T&CG。对维持水平调节器SLR施加温度T和功率限度P。
对于新图象数据的每帧,增加有效子场象素以计算子场负荷。有效子场负荷以及功率限度和温度参数将决定每帧的维持脉冲总数。这与输入视频信号计时和子场分布设置相结合,并且对每个子场计算新一组的维持水平。
虽然此过程由微控制器执行,但只需要修正软件以支持SED技术。
对于每帧,在显示帧的第一子帧之前,向计时&控制过程提交新的维持水平设置。
当计算SF(子场)维持水平时,还已知维持周期。此信息与运动补偿子场计算有关。此过程必须清楚每个维持周期的精确计时。可以考虑维持固定的子场计时格式并用空闲信号填充无用的维持周期。
当对于每个子场为下一帧补偿SF维持水平量化误差时,可以忽略总量化误差。
图2示出了维持水平调节器SLR的实施例,其中根据所需的SF维持水平,通过利用量化过程产生实际的SF维持水平。在图2中,对加法器施加所需的维持RS,而加法器的输出施加给输出该实际维持AS的量化器Q。S是定标因子。实际维持AS施加给减-量化器Q-1,由减法器ST从量化器Q的输入中减去减-量化器Q-1的输出。由滤波器滤除最终的量化误差QE,并且之后由加法器A加入到所需的维持中。
由微控制器利用维持水平和SF分布数据计算对子场所需的SF维持水平SF SL,并将其表达为数字型的实数。实际的SF维持水平SF SL必须是一个整数的数字。这意味着四舍五入掉所需SF维持水平SF SL的量化过程。所需维持(类型实数)的剩余部分传递到下一帧的有关子场,并加入到该帧的所需SF维持水平。
滤波器的特性仅仅是延迟。该延迟是完整的帧周期减去有效子场周期。
通过设置维持水平调节操作和计时&控制发生器,实施SED技术以向下一图象场或帧提交SF维持水平SF SL误差。这些阶段对每个子场计算维持水平和维持时间,从而自适应调节PDP的SF维持水平SF SL。
图3表示具有各种维持水平SL的SF分布实例、即没有量化误差QE的100%维持水平SL、具有量化误差QE的140%和40%的维持水平SF。
虽然以上参考附图描述了本发明,但显然本发明不限于此,在所附权利要求的限定范围内可以做各种变化。在权利要求中,置于括号内的任何标号将不构成对权利要求的限定。“包括”一词不排除除权利要求中所列元件或步骤以外其它元件或步骤的存在。元件前缀“一个(a)”或“一个(an)”不排除多个这类元件的存在。在列举几个部件的装置权利要求中,这几个部件可以由一个及同样的硬件体现。在相互不同的从属权利要求中引用的特定量不表示这些量的组合不能被采用。
Claims (10)
1.一种驱动等离子显示板(PDP)的方法,其中该显示板包括每个都对应于象素的单元,象素响应于包含场的视频信号,其中每个场由多个子场形成,该方法包括步骤:
施加(Q)维持水平信号,在用于发光的放电单元中导致维持放电,和
执行(Q-1,ST,F,A)误差扩散过程,
其特征在于误差扩散过程包括
探测(Q-1,ST)维持水平量化误差(QE),和
将当前场的维持水平量化误差(QE)传递(F,A)到下一场。
2.一种驱动等离子显示板的装置,其中显示板包括每个都对应于象素的单元,象素响应于包含场的视频信号,其中每个场由多个子场形成,该装置包括:
施加维持水平信号(AS)的装置(Q),在用于发光的放电单元中导致维持放电,和
执行误差扩散过程的装置(Q-1,ST,F,A),

7.如权利要求2所述的装置,其特征在于传递装置(F,A)把传递的维持水平量化误差(QE)加到下一场的所需维持水平上。
8.如权利要求2所述的装置,还包括:
根据维持水平和子场分布数据产生所需的维持水平的装置,
量化过程装置,通过量化过程四舍五入所需的维持水平,和
根据量化过程的结果产生实际的维持水平作为整数并将所需维持水平的剩余部分作为量化误差的装置。
9.如权利要求2所述的装置,还包括光度调节装置,优选为自适应光度调节装置。
10.一种等离子显示设备,包括如权利要求2所述的装置。
