Abstract

Description
本发明涉及与混合的扭转向列型和双折射模式混合的反射型有源矩阵液晶显示器。
本专利涉及把波导效果与扭转向列型液晶的双折射效果相结合的反射模式液晶显示器。通过优化诸如扭转角、延迟(retardation)和起偏器(polarizer)角等液晶显示器的各种光学配置,发明了一系列混合的扭转向列型-双折射(MTB)显示器模式。
先前已对反射型液晶显示器(RLCD)进行了相当多的研究。从广义上来说,RLCD可分为2类:它们是不依靠起偏器的RLCD和依靠起偏器的RLCD。前者的例子是反射式胆甾醇型(cholesteric)显示器和吸收式主客(guest-host)显示器。后一类别是必要的向列型液晶显示器。这些都是如同普通扭转向列型LCD显示器那样基于偏振操作的显示器。然而,与普通LCD不同的是,只有一个前起偏器而除去了后起偏器。这种RLCD的主要应用是没有背光的直接观看显示器以及使用具有集成的CMOS驱动器的晶体硅底板的投射显示器或普通的反射式液晶光阀(LCLV)。
已研究了反射式扭转LCD。一个成功的发明是所谓的TN-ECB模式。近来Wu等人已报告了它的一个变体。它有90°的扭转角。可对波导TN效果与纯粹的双折射效果结合的显示器模式给出许多名称,例如45°混合场效应(HFE)模式、63°TN-ECB模式、90°混合TN(MTN)模式、自补偿TN(SCTN)模式和52°RTN模式。
这里揭示了包含所有这些混合模式显示器的反射式扭转向列型LCD的统一描述,还提供了同时优化所有这些显示器的方法。可找到还未报告的许多新的操作情况,它们是本发明的主题。
可在无源矩阵或有源矩阵底板上制造这些反射式液晶显示器。可在玻璃或硅晶片上制造有源矩阵底板。
如图1所示,反射式向列型LCD由起偏器、扭转向列型液晶单元和反射器构成,它们可以是有源矩阵器件中一回路的一部分。起偏器可以是片状起偏器或所示的偏振光束分离器(PBS)。在本发明中,一般把PBS的情况描述成为硅微型显示器的最普遍几何形状。
如H.S.Kwok的论文[“液晶显示器操作模式的参数空间表象”J.Appl.Phys.,80(7),3687-3693(1996)]中所讨论的,可以参数空间图来表示所有的向列型RLCD模式。参数空间在扭转向列型RLCD的情况下尤其有用,因为它示出TN-ECB、MTN、SCTN和ECB模式之间的关系。RLCD的反射率R是3个主要参数的函数:扭转角φ、LC单元的起偏器与输入导向器之间的起偏器角α以及LC单元的延迟dΔn,这里d是单元厚度。在Jones矩阵中波长λ总是与延迟一起出现为dΔn/λ。因此,可把它处理为dΔn。因而,如果这三个参数(α,φ,dΔn)之一固定,则可用轮廓线在2D参数空间中把R绘制成为另外两个参数的函数。
图2示出RLCD的一系列参数空间,α从0变到45°。在计算中假设550nm的波长。轮廓线示出步长为0.1的恒定反射率。图2中的阱是所谓的TN-ECB最小值。这些阱的中心对应于交叉起偏器的最大反射率或平行起偏器的最小反射率。例如,在显示器中使用偏振光束分离器(PBS),则(α,φ,dΔn)=(0,63.5°,0.18μm)将给出R=1。这对应于第一TN-ECB最小值。它在图2中已标出。在图2中还示出对应适当α的SCTN模式和MTN模式。
在图2中未示出大于45°的起偏器角。因为超过45°,则除了x轴的反射率以外此参数空间将重复自身,即α=90°-α的参数空间与α的参数空间相同,而φ变为-φ。从图2中,可看出反射型LCD有两组操作模式。一组模式是对应于参数空间中的岛的“阱内”类型,诸如TN-ECB、MTN、SCTN模式。另一组模式是位于TN-ECB阱外的“阱外”模式,诸如RTN、RSTN和HFE模式。
这里揭示“阱内”模式。在图2中可看出,各种TN-ECB最小值在参数空间中随α的变化而***地移动。尤其是,检查具有+φ的第一TN-ECB模式。可看出,此模式在φ=90°、α=22°时变为MTN模式,然后在φ=60°、α=30°时变为SCTN模式。最后,此第一TN-ECB最小值在φ=0°、α=45°时变为真正的ECB模式。
此情况由图3所示+φ情况下第一TN-ECB最小值的中心轨迹图清楚地示出。在该图中,α以步长5°从0变到45°。可看出,第一TN-ECB最小值首先向外移动,然后朝向y轴。延迟随α的增大而单调增大。最大扭转角在起偏器角为15°时达到70.2°。图4是α仍以步长5°从0变到90°的0.9反射率轮廓的类似的图。该图不同于图3,因为我们还包括了α从45°到90°。从图4可看出,随着α从45°变到90°,原来的-φTN-ECB最小值移入正φ一侧,继而在参数空间上形成完整的回线。这在示出正负扭转(图5)的参数空间中更容易看到。注意,α和α+90°的参数空间是相同的,从而在α从0变到90°时在图5中形成完整的回线。图3示出,对于扭转角从-70°到+70°,在不同的起偏器角处总是存在两个第一级TN-ECB最小值,一个具有较小的dΔn值,另一个具有较高的dΔn值。
在图4中还示出MTN模式、TN-ECB模式和SCTN模式的操作点。因而,图4统一了用于TN-ECB、MTN和SCTN模式的整个图形。它们都以偏振旋转(TN)和双折射(ECB)效果相结合进行操作。它们的不同在于起偏器的旋转相对于输入导向器,或换句话说在于TN对ECB效果的比例。因此,应可对一般情况下的这些模式进行优化,以使这三种参数同时变化。
现在将定义这些向列型反射式LCD的术语。由于所有的这些模式都以TN效果和ECB效果相结合进行操作,所以可把它们叫做混合模式或组合模式。在文献中已把它们叫做TN-ECB、MTN、SCTN或HFE。以下把这种LCD操作模式叫做广义的组合TN-双折射模式,或简称MTB模式,而不是把它们叫做TN-ECB/MTN/HFE模式。
在优化MTB模式时,可假设想要高的反射率。如果把所需的反射率或光效率设定为0.9,则此方案将被图3所示0.9反射率的轮廓所限制。这极大地限制了参数空间。或者,如果把所需的反射率设定为0.7,则此方案空间将展开地较大并包括高达100°的扭转角。在图4-21中绘出起偏器角以步长5°增大时0.7反射率的轮廓。这表现了MTB模式的所有可能性。注意,在图4-21中表现出先前所报告的所有模式。例如,在图8中包括了Wu等人的90°MTN模式。在图10中包括了Yang的SCTN模式。
图22是图4-21中所有R=0.7的轮廓的合成。可看到,对于小于70°的φ,总是有两个不同的MTB模式。通常,dΔn较小的方案的波长分散(dispersive)小于dΔn较大的方案。然而,从单元制造的观点看,需要dΔn较大。
表I示出各种起偏器几何形状下使用不同“阱内”和“阱外”模式的RLCD的正常操作亮度。可看出,依据起偏器的几何形状,在两种情况下都可实行普通白(NW)和普通黑(NB)操作。起偏器的选择对RLCD的优化有着深刻的影响。为了具有优良的对比度,应使暗状态尽可能暗。这可方便地通过LC在高偏置电压下的同型(homeotropic)对准来满足,其中dΔn=0(图2中的x轴)。此同型状态是不分散的,且尽可能随时地把此用作暗状态。对于与图1中阱的中心对应的MTB模式,可在使用PBS时把同型状态用作暗状态。则此显示器将为正常亮度。
然而,如果使用平行起偏器几何形状,则电压高的同型状态为亮状态,而MTB阱变成暗状态。这是不想要的,因为MTB阱是分散的且不能太暗。因而,对比度将变弱。因此,对于使用MTB操作的直接观看,必须使用四分之一波延迟膜来颠倒亮和暗状态。另一个方案是把诸如RTN和HFE模式等“阱外”模式用作亮状态。在RTN的情况下,可通过进一步优化起偏器角使暗状态非常暗。
表II综合了使用参数空间法所提供的一些新MTB模式。这些模式具有相当好的反射率和低的分散。所有的这些还未在以前提出过。

表II示出从以上过程中获得的一些新MTB模式的光学特性。从表II中可看出,对于每个扭转角,dΔn和α的许多组合可获得良好的对比度。此外,表II中不十分明显的是,改变α对MTB单元的分散特性的影响。观察到,对于小于70°的扭转角,亮和暗状态都变得更分散,而且显示器的彩色协调性随电压的改变而偏移。因此,它们不是十分理想。
应强调,表II决不是所有最佳的MTB操作情况的穷尽示例。事实上,存在无限如图3-5所示MTB模式的情况的组合。如果要牺牲峰值反射率,则MTB的方案空间将展开得更宽,导致更多的可能性。
图23示出这里所发明的一些MEB模式的开和关状态的有关波长的反射率。选择这些模式是因为它们(1)波长分散低,或者(2)在加上电压时对比度高,或者(3)单元间隙相当大,从而其制造是可能的。从顶部开始,这些曲线的(α,φ,dΔn)值分别为(26°,43°,0.35μm)、(30°,50°,0.35μm)、(34°,54°,0.35μm)、(40°,63°,0.35μm)。
为了证实理论上的模拟,制造和测试了样品单元。一个样品单元是以(30°,70°,0.31μm)的单元参数制造的。为了增大单元间隙,使用E.Merck的型号为ZLI-1695的液晶,其Δn较低(0.0625)。实验的单元间隙为5μm,给出dΔn为0.3175μm,这与目标设计值很接近。使用标准的摩擦聚酰亚胺膜来对准LC分子,以形成70°的扭转单元。由于所使用的设备使扭转角的准确率好于1°。LC单元把铟-锡-氧化物作为一侧上的透明电极,而把涂敷铝的玻璃作为另一侧上的反射电极。
图24示出在此新的MTB模式在白光照明下的实验反射率-电压曲线。从该图中,我们可找到在3.6V出存在好的暗状态。在1.2V时反射率还稍稍增加。暗状态的操作电压仅为2.5V,这非常适用于CMOS AMLCD设备。
图25示出此MTB模式的实验反射率对波长的关系图。把竖直标尺归一化到峰值。可看出,在长波长处,反射率与理论模拟十分吻合。然而,在短波长处,与理论有一些偏差。这是因为实验中所实验的PBS在此波长范围内的光学特性很差。另一个原因是单元厚度不是精确的5μm。测得实际的单元厚度为大约5.2μm。因此,其实际dΔn为大约0.325μm。
除了操作电压低以外,5μm的单元间隙也是单元制造的较佳值。尤其是,它适用于基于晶体硅的CMOS LCD。对这种大的单元间隙,也应容易满足均匀性的要求。进一步的实验将集中在大约4.5μm的单元厚度。我们相信此较小的单元间隙还进一步降低了单元色散和操作电压。
