Abstract

The present invention relates to a system [100] and a method [200] for a user equipment [110] to utilize services in an LTE/5G network based on a combination of PLMN/channels. The user equipment [110] sends an attach request to a network entity [210], wherein the user equipment [110] supports a first RAT and uses a first combination of a first channel and a PLMN. In addition, if the network entity [210] or the user equipment [110] does not support VoPS, the user equipment [110] disables the first combination and selects a second combination comprising a new channel that supports the same PLMN. Thus, the user equipment [110] utilizes services in the network by supporting the second combination using the first RAT.

Description

User equipment utilizing services in LTE/5G networks based on PLMN/channel combinations
Technical Field
The present invention relates generally to the field of wireless communications, and more particularly, to a method and system for a user equipment to utilize services in an LTE/5G Network based on a Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN)/channel combination using available Radio channels, the user equipment supporting multiple Radio Access Technologies (RATs).
Background
This section is intended to provide information related to the general state of the art, and thus, any methods/functions described below should not be considered prior art merely for inclusion in this section.
In recent years, wireless communication networks have been greatly developed and commercialized, resulting in a great increase in the number of services and functions provided for user equipment. In addition, with the deployment of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks and 5G networks, the ue is configured to be able to support multiple RATs, such as 5G, 4G, 3G, and 2G. In the current scenario, different operators operate on multiple frequency bands/channels of the LTE network. There are also two possible mechanisms in LTE networks to provide voice services to users. One mechanism is Voice over LTE (VoLTE), and the other is Circuit Switched Fall Back (CSFB). The user device may be a voice-centric device or a data-centric device.
Furthermore, in order to utilize services in the network, the ue in Circuit switched/Packet switched (CS/PS) mode 1 attempts to attach to the LTE network through an EPS attach type of "joint Evolved Packet System (EPS)/International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI)", where the EPS attach type of "joint EPS/IMSI" indicates that the ue supports EPS services as well as non-EPS services. However, in some cases, the user equipment may not be able to attach to the LTE network since the LTE network does not allow non-EPS services. To utilize services in the network, the user equipment selects a serving cell of the network by selecting a combination of PLMN and RAT for the network, i.e. the user equipment selects PLMN and RAT that are supported by both the user equipment and the network. The Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM) card of a user equipment includes various data files based on 3GPP (third generation partnership project) standards that define a PLMN/(one or more) RAT combination, where multiple RATs are specified for a listed PLMN. For successful selection of the serving cell, the PLMN/RAT combination is selected according to a priority order.
Furthermore, in order to attach to the network, a user equipment of a specific PLMN/RAT combination sends an attach request to the network. However, in some cases the user equipment receives an acceptance message from the network but includes some reason for prohibiting the user equipment from remaining in that particular network. In this case, the user equipment disables the high RAT capability of the PLMN altogether, although the PLMN may also operate on some different frequency. According to 3GPP, the user equipment disables a current/existing RAT (e.g., Evolved Universal Radio Access network (E-UTRAN) capability) by selecting another, lower-capability RAT for the PLMN in the list of equivalent PLMNs). However, in current schemes that disable the high RAT, the user experience can be greatly reduced. In addition, in current schemes for switching from a high RAT to a low RAT, the subsequent user equipment may only stay on the low RAT and may not be able to smoothly switch to the high RAT again, thereby limiting the functionality of the user equipment. Another limitation of current schemes is that handover of user equipment back and forth between LTE and non-LTE networks can adversely affect the connectivity services. Thus, existing solutions fail to utilize other available channels in the network when switching to a low RAT based on the availability of a particular PLMN on a high RAT.
Therefore, in order to overcome the above-mentioned problems inherent in existing/deselected schemes, there is a need for a seamless and efficient mechanism to select available channels/bands in the network for the same PLMN subject to network rejection while ensuring proper utilization of the available channels, thereby eliminating the need to select a new PLMN or a new RAT.
Disclosure of Invention
This section illustrates certain aspects of the invention in a simplified form that are further described in the detailed description below. This summary is not intended to identify key features or scope of the claimed subject matter.
In view of the above-mentioned drawbacks and limitations of the prior art/prior art solutions, it is an object of the present invention to provide a method and system for selecting a new channel/band available in a network for a current PLMN. The present invention therefore aims to eliminate the need to select a low priority RAT. Another object of the invention is: if the network or user equipment does not support the high RAT on the current channel, a handover is made to the low RAT and then back to the high priority RAT operating on a different band/channel. It is yet another object of the present invention to ensure that the user equipment operates at a high RAT while being connected to the network.
With the above and other objects in view, one aspect of the present invention is directed to a method for a user equipment to utilize a service in a network, the method being performed by the user equipment. The method comprises the following steps: a user equipment sends an attach request to a network entity, wherein the user equipment operates using a first combination formed by a PLMN and a first channel, and wherein the user equipment currently supports a first radio access technology, and the attach request comprises a joint EPS/IMSI attach type indicating that the user equipment supports EPS services and non-EPS services; receiving a system information message and a registration acceptance message from a network entity, wherein the registration acceptance message indicates that the network entity supports only EPS service; analyzing the registration acceptance message and the system information message, and disabling a first combination formed by the PLMN and the first channel in case that the user equipment does not support a voice over packet switching (VoPS) or in case that the network entity does not support VoPS; selecting for the user equipment a second combination formed by the PLMN and a second channel available in the network; and a user equipment operating using a second combination formed by the PLMN and a second channel of the first radio access technology utilizes the service in the network.
Another aspect of the invention relates to a user equipment for utilizing services in a network. The user equipment comprises a communication unit and a processing unit. The communication unit is configured for a user equipment to send an attach request to a network entity, wherein the user equipment operates using a first combination formed by a PLMN and a first channel, and wherein the user equipment currently supports a first radio access technology and the attach request comprises a joint EPS/IMSI attach type indicating that the user equipment supports EPS services and non-EPS services; and means for receiving a registration accept message and a system information message from the network entity, wherein the registration accept message indicates that the network entity supports only EPS services. The processing unit is configured to analyze the registration accept message and the system information message, disable a first combination formed by the PLMN and the first channel in case the user equipment does not support VoPS or in case the network entity does not support VoPS; selecting a second combination formed by the PLMN and a second channel available in the network for the user equipment, wherein the second combination is selected by disabling the first combination formed by the PLMN and the first channel. The communication unit is further configured to utilize a service in the network by a user equipment operating using a second combination formed by the PLMN and the second channel.

Figure 1 shows a preferred embodiment of the invention comprising a system architecture for a user equipment utilizing services in a network, wherein the user equipment [110] is currently operating using a first combination formed by a PLMN and a first channel and the user equipment [110] currently supports a first RAT. The system [100] includes a user equipment [110] connected to a network entity [210 ]. As shown in fig. 1, the user equipment [110] comprises at least a communication unit [112], a processing unit [114] and a storage unit [116], and the network entity [210] comprises at least a communication unit [212] and a storage unit [214 ]. The user equipment [110], the network entity [210] and subcomponents therein are configured to cooperate and provide respective functions to achieve the objectives of the present invention.
The communication unit [112] of the user equipment [110] is configured to send an attach request to the communication unit [212] of the network entity [210], wherein the user equipment operates using a first combination formed by the PLMN and the first channel, and the user equipment [110] currently supports the first RAT. In a preferred embodiment, the attach request sent by the user equipment [110] comprises a joint EPS/IMSI attach type indicating that the user equipment [110] supports EPS services and non-EPS services.
The communication unit [212] of the network entity [210] is configured to, upon receiving an attach request from the user equipment [110], analyze the attach request and subsequently send a registration accept message and a system information message to the communication unit [112] of the user equipment [110 ]. The system information message and the registration accept message comprise an EPS/EMM cause code and information about the network capabilities of the network entity [210], respectively. In a preferred embodiment, the system information message includes an EMM cause code 18 indicating that the network entity [210] supports only EPS services and does not allow non-EPS services (i.e., CS services). The registration accept message indicates the attach result, e.g., may indicate that the network entity supports only EPS traffic. Upon receiving the registration accept message from the network entity [210], the communication unit [112] of the user equipment [110] internally transmits the registration accept message to the processing unit [114] of the user equipment [110 ].
The processing unit [114] is configured to analyze the registration acceptance message and the system information message to check whether the network entity [210] supports the EPS service. Currently, in case the user equipment [110] does not support VoPS or in case the network entity [210] does not support VoPS, the processing unit [114] is configured to disable the first combination formed by the first channel and the PLMN.
VoPS is based on an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). In one example, VoPS corresponds to VoLTE technology in LTE networks (which are also based on IMS), and may correspond to similar technology in 5G networks.
The processing unit [114] is further configured to select a new channel, i.e. a second channel, among the available channels supporting the same PLMN. The second channel is selected by disabling the first channel. In one example, the second channel is selected in a similar manner as the channel is selected at reboot.
Further, in one embodiment, the processing unit [114] is configured to switch to the second RAT (low RAT) based on analysis of the registration accept message and the system information message, and then switch back to the first RAT (high RAT) based on availability of the second channel of the first RAT as described above.
The communication unit [112] of the user equipment [110] is further configured to utilize a service in the network, wherein the user equipment [110] is currently operating using a second combination formed by the PLMN and a second channel. In the event that the user equipment [110] is not handed over from the first RAT to the second RAT, the communication unit [112] of the user equipment [110] utilizes the service using the first RAT; and in case the user equipment [110] is handed over from the first RAT to the second RAT, the communication unit [112] of the user equipment [110] utilizes the service using the second RAT.
Further, the storage unit [116] of the user equipment [110] and the storage unit [214] of the network entity [212] are for storing information related to: a system information message, an attach type, a list of equivalent PLMNs, a list of new PLMNs, a first RAT, and a second RAT. Storage unit [116] and storage unit [214] as used herein may refer to any non-transitory medium for storing the above-described information. Further, the storage unit [116] and the storage unit [214] may be volatile memory or nonvolatile memory.
Fig. 2 shows an exemplary method flowchart [200] including a method of a user equipment [110] utilizing a service in a network, according to an embodiment of the invention. The method [200] may begin at operation 202, where the user equipment [110] is currently operating using a first combination formed by the PLMN and the first channel, and the user equipment [110] is currently supporting the first RAT.
At operation 204, the communication unit [112] of the user equipment [110] sends an attach request to the communication unit [212] of the network entity [210], wherein the user equipment [110] operates using a first combination formed by the PLMN and the first channel, and the user equipment [110] currently supports the first RAT. In a preferred embodiment, the attach request sent by the user equipment [110] comprises a joint EPS/IMSI attach type indicating that the user equipment [110] supports EPS services and non-EPS services.
Upon receiving an attach request from the user equipment [110], the communication unit [212] of the network entity [210] analyzes the attach request and then sends a registration accept message and a system information message to the communication unit [112] of the user equipment [110] at operation 206.
Upon receiving the registration accept message from the network entity [210], the communication unit [112] of the user equipment [110] internally transmits the registration accept message to the processing unit [114] of the user equipment [110] at operation 208. The processing unit [114] analyses the registration accept message and the system information message and checks if the EMM reason code 18 is present. In the case where both the network entity [210] and the user equipment [110] support VoPS, the method [200] may terminate at operation 220, i.e., the user equipment [110] will continue to operate using the first combination formed by the PLMN and the first channel. Additionally, if the network entity [210] or the user equipment [110] does not currently support VoPS, the method [200] may proceed to operation 210.
At operation 210, the processing unit [114] disables a first combination formed by the first channel and the PLMN. The processing unit [114] disables a first combination formed by the first channel and the PLMN to select a second channel or an alternative channel on the same PLMN and the same RAT.
At operation 212, the processing unit [114] selects a second combination formed by a second channel and a PLMN, the second channel being a new channel for the same PLMN among the available channels. In one example, the second channel is selected in a similar manner as the channel is selected at reboot.
At operation 214, the communication unit [112] utilizes a service in the network, wherein the user equipment [110] is currently operating using the second combination formed by the PLMN and the second channel, and the user equipment [110] supports the first RAT. The method [200] may then terminate at operation 216.
In one embodiment, the processing unit [114] switches from a first RAT to a second RAT, the second RAT being a lower RAT than the first RAT. In a preferred embodiment, the processing device [114] switches from a 4G or 5G (high RAT) to a low RAT such as 2G, 3G. The communication unit [112] of the user equipment [110] is then notified of the handover of the first RAT to the second RAT.
Subsequently, the communication unit [112] utilizes a service in the network, wherein the user equipment [110] is currently operating in the second RAT. Next, the communication unit [112] re-analyzes the system information and the registration accept message to check whether the PLMN supports the first RAT (i.e., a higher RAT than the second RAT) on an alternative channel (i.e., a channel other than the first channel). In case an alternative channel is available, the user equipment [110] switches back to the first RAT. The user equipment [110] then currently operates using a second combination formed by the PLMN and the second channel.
The present invention therefore eliminates the need for a full search for a new PLMN for a user equipment to utilize services in the network. This is done by selecting a new channel for the same PLMN where the network or user equipment does not support VoPS. Furthermore, the invention switches from the first RAT to the second RAT in case the network entity or the user equipment does not support VoPS in the first RAT, and then switches back to the first RAT based on the availability of the second channel in the first RAT.
Although a limited number of user equipment [110], network entities [210] and subcomponents therein are shown in the figure; however, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the system [100] of the present invention includes any number and different types of components/modules and other components/subsystems for achieving the objectives of the present invention.
Although the 4G/LTE network is described with emphasis in the disclosed embodiments, it should be understood that the invention is operable on 5G networks and that changes may be made to the embodiments without departing from the principles of the invention. These and other variations upon the embodiments of the present invention are intended to be within the scope of the present invention, and it is to be understood that the foregoing description is intended to be illustrative and not limiting.
