Abstract

发明背景
将微型传感器嵌入到结构、***、贮存器和集装箱以及其它物品中可允许对这些物品的检测以确定健康、维护需求、寿命和其它物品特性。来自复合或其它结构中的微型嵌入式应力传感器的信息可告知用户包括物品是否被跌落足以导致使结构的完整性受到怀疑的程度的损伤、应力,是否经受比其可处理的多的循环变化,或是否具有其它健康或性能问题在内的信息。
大部分当前的结构不采用嵌入式传感器来协助确定结构健康。相反,为结构分配了显著短于可达到的工作寿命的工作寿命。此外,对结构给出了比必要的更加频繁和严格的维护时间表和维护或处置指导原则。这些过程导致应用和用户的超额的成本,因为比必要的更频繁地替换、修理和维护结构,同时还采用比其需要的更复杂且昂贵的维护技术和产品。通过采用结构中的嵌入式传感器,用户可在给定时间点测量结构的实际健康,而不管结构所经历的先前的状况,然后基于结构健康的分析而不是预定的时间表来在所需时进行维护和替换活动。
为了维持材料的可靠性和完整性,通常需要传感器在存储、运输或使用前监测结构劣化。检测结构中的应变的一种常用方法是将光纤传感器嵌入到材料中。通常用于检测损伤的两种方法利用光纤布拉格光栅(“FBG”)和标准具。
已对FBG和相关联的布拉格现象进行了长期的研究并将其实现于众多的商业应用中,其中的某一些涉及结构健康监测(“SHM”)。光纤布拉格光栅是光纤核心中形成的周期性的折射率梯度。光栅仅允许某些波长穿过光栅而其它的从光栅反射。结构以及由此光纤中的应变改变光栅的周期性,由此改变其透射和反射性质。可测量这些变化,并可从数据中计算出应力集中。
尤其是对于SHM,已在研究级别上对FBG进行了长期的研究,同时某些研究已进行到商业可用性阶段。不管特定的FBG的商业准备状态如何,都可将其描述为局部光纤传感器。换言之,FBG是具有取决于光纤上写入的光栅的长度的敏感区域的传感器。例如,FBG不能检测不重合或不直接施加到含有布拉格光栅的光纤的区域的所施加的应变。在很多应用中,这是可接受的操作过程,而其它的应用则需要更加分散的传感技术。
一种允许沿单一光纤的多个FBG传感位置的过程是利用更复杂的仪器来多路复用FBG。关于实现局部分布式传感器的方法通常存在三个问题:必须准备沿光纤的多个位置以写FBG,必须预定结构上关注的位置并将其与光栅的位置匹配,并且需要更复杂且昂贵的仪器以询问多个FBG。
通常伴随将FBG嵌入到结构中的过程的一个问题是在很多情况下必须去除光纤的保护性丙烯酸酯涂层以写FBG。保护性涂层的去除需要特殊的过程以使由于处理和或环境条件引起的可能的损伤最小化。这些过程通常限制实现FBG的环境的类型或需要被监测的结构中不允许的保护性装置。
传感器装置中类似于FBG的是法布里-珀罗标准具(“FPE”)。标准具是可测量施加到嵌入了FPE的结构的应力的点源检测方案。标准具被示出具有用于检测矩阵中的应力和指示该应力的相对级别的非凡的特性。然而,为了有用并为了确保最优灵敏度,必须在标准具被放置在结构中之前标识损坏的可能位置。同样,正如FBG的情况一样,通常将标准具附近的光纤上的保护性涂层去除以提高传感器的灵敏度。这种材料的去除急剧地降低了传感器的健壮性,这将限制用于其恶劣环境中的最终应用。
因此,期望具有这样一种光纤应力传感***,它克服FBG和FPE的限制,并提供可以用分布式方式安装在结构上的更加健壮且节省成本的传感器,而不需要预先指定可能的应力区域。
发明内容
因此,本发明的一个目的是提供一种利用分布在结构中的光纤而不需要结构上的预定的关注区域的应力传感***。
本发明的另一个目的是提供一种不需要从光纤去除保护涂层的光纤应力传感***。
本发明的又一个目的是提供一种利用市场上可购买的仪器以及用于监测结构上的应变的过程的光纤应力传感***。
与具有有限的健壮性并需要预先标识损坏的可能位置的现有技术相反,本发明采用简单的白光偏振干涉测量法和商业化即时可用(“COTS”)的能够感测直接施加到光纤上沿其长度方向的任何位置的应变的偏振维持光纤,而不需要创建单独的离散传感器位置,也不需要多路复用多个传感器以覆盖结构的整个区域。该完全分布的传感能力使选择性传感器布置困难变小并增加了其中嵌入了传感器的结构上的总体敏感区域。
本发明包括利用可嵌入偏振光纤传感器来监测结构的方法和装置。图1是本发明的简化框图,它包括长度足以覆盖被检测的结构6的区域的偏振维持光纤1、具有短相干长度的宽频带白光光源2、具有足以覆盖光纤传感器1的长度的光程-扫描长度的光学干涉仪3、信号处理单元4以及计算机或其它微处理器5。首先以允许结构6中的应力转移到光纤1的方式将光纤传感器1嵌入或附连到结构6。然后,宽频带光源2将偏振的短相干长度光脉冲发射到光纤1的一端。结构6内的局部应力在该脉冲沿光纤行进时延迟了其传输。在光纤的另一端,偏振器11(示于图2中)将偏振的输出光投射到一公共偏振轴上。然后光进入干涉仪3,其中将来自干涉仪3的一个分支的光以不同的延迟量叠加到来自另一个分支的光。当由改变干涉仪的一个分支的距离导致的延迟等于由光纤传感器1中的局部应力导致的脉冲延迟时,发生大的相长干涉,并可计算距离光纤传感器1的末端的应力集中的距离。

图2中示出了本发明的一个实施例。该实施例采用具有38nm的3dB带宽的30mW 1565nm超荧光发光二极管(“SLED”)作为宽频带光源2,得到41μm的相干长度,尽管可在不背离本发明的范围的前提下使用其它光源。将光源2的输出偏振并与嵌入的光纤传感器1的一个轴对准。光纤传感器1本身是缠绕并嵌入到受测试装置6的连续长度的偏振维持单模光纤。光纤传感器1的输出首先通过以45度对准光纤传感器1的偏振轴的偏振器11传输。将偏振器11的输出发射到被配置为标准迈克耳逊干涉仪的光学干涉仪3的输入。干涉仪3的一个分支由光学台和步进电动机(扫描镜13内)扫描,且扫描距离利用光学编码器(扫描镜13内)来记录。信号处理器16控制扫描镜13的移动并将来自干涉仪的模拟数据转换成数字形式以记录在PC 17上。从扫描的每一步得到的干涉图的振幅在光电二极管检测器12上收集并由PC 17记录。如图3所示,干涉图中大的振幅表示局部应力点18。
尽管以上所讨论的实施例利用了迈克耳逊干涉仪,但本文公开的***和方法也可运用其它类型的光学干涉装置(诸如萨尼亚克干涉仪)来工作,其中可显著改变一光束的光程距离然后将其叠加到原始光束上。
用于传感器的读出技术是如图4所示操作的白光干涉技术。将光源的偏振光脉冲20发射到光纤传感器1的输入端27。由于该光纤的双折射,输入光脉冲20将具有将其自身与光纤中的两个固定偏振轴(主偏振轴28和正交轴29)中的一个对准的倾向。然而,沿光纤传感器1的长度的局部应力梯度21改变光纤传感器1的局部双折射。这种应力引起的双折射的局部变化用作应力传感器并将来自偏振轴中的一个的光与另一个耦合,致使光脉冲20分为维持在主偏振轴28中的“维持”脉冲22和正交轴29中的“耦合”脉冲23。光纤传感器1中的较大的应力产生较大振幅的耦合脉冲23。双折射也导致对于两偏振轴的光传播速率的差别。因此,随着最初发射的光进一步远离局部应力点行进,光脉冲将在空间中分离,但将维持在其各自的偏振状态中,从而形成维持脉冲22和耦合脉冲23之间的“脉冲延迟”。在光纤传感器1的输出端25处,45°偏振器11将光脉冲22和23从其分离的偏振轴投射到公共轴26上。
参考图2,在光离开光纤传感器1和偏振器11后,它被发射到干涉仪3中。干涉仪3利用光束分离器15将光分为两个光程。然后干涉仪3中的光电二极管检测器12检测由在两个光程中行进的具有不同相位的两个波的干涉导致的亮度变化。干涉仪3的目的是通过改变光的两个光束的光程差来测量光脉冲22和23(图4)中的应变引起的延迟。所需的光程差的量转化为延迟量和光纤传感器1的输出端回到局部应力梯度的距离。该过程示于图5中。
图5A示出在调节扫描镜13之前光束分离器15的输出处的干涉仪3的状况。在过程的该阶段,光束分离器15将包含光脉冲22和23的光束分离成两束(30和31)。在该阶段,因为固定镜14和扫描镜13与光束分离器15等距,所以输出监视器将不会示出这两束之间的光程长度差,所以脉冲干涉和检测器输出都将为高(即,有大的相长干涉)。该最初的高输出级别不表示应力集中,相反表示***中光源的位置。对该状况的读出表现为图3上的传感器长度零(“0”)。
在图5B中,扫描镜13离开光束分离器15某一距离,但来自两个镜的束30和31之间的相对延迟小于光纤传感器中形成的脉冲延迟,且输出监视器将示出低脉冲干涉(即,没有应力集中)。在图5C中,调节扫描镜13直到由干涉仪3引起的延迟等于来自光纤引起的脉冲的延迟,从而产生大的相长干涉,这显示在输出监视器上并表示如图3中由应力集中18所示的应力集中。
当将应力集中置于离开光纤的输出端距离L处的光纤传感器上时(图4),将来自光纤的一个轴的第一光脉冲耦合到正交轴,从而形成第二光脉冲。由于光纤的双折射,一个光脉冲沿光纤比其它光脉冲行进得更快。每一个脉冲沿光纤行进的速度v1和v2(图4)取决于对于光纤的该轴的折射率。

图6以简化形式示出利用复合制造领域中熟知的灯丝缠绕***来将光纤传感器嵌入到结构中的一种技术。在该技术中,将光纤传感器1嵌入到复合缠绕结构40中。用于复合结构40的缠绕***具有在结构旋转时来回扫描光纤放置轴41以将光纤传感器1关于结构40的圆周螺旋形地放置。在传感器缠绕完成后,将另外的一层复合材料缠绕在光纤传感器1上的结构40上,从而将其嵌入到结构40中。当缠绕操作完成后,连接光纤传感器1以连接到读出***(未示出)。
图7示出通过将光纤传感器1夹在顶部复合板45和底部复合板46之间来将光纤传感器1嵌入到复合板中的另一种方法。
尽管图6和7示出将光纤嵌入到结构中的两种方法,但也可在不背离本发明的范围的前提下采用可将光纤固定地粘附到结构的任何方法。这一固定附连可通过以上所讨论的复合嵌入工艺来实现,但也可利用各种粘合剂来实现。此外,可将光纤传感器安装在实际上任何刚性材料或结构上,例如,金属、复合物、硬塑料等。
本发明的一个目的是向用户提供一种容易地标识结构上的可能损坏区域的手段。这种对存在可能损坏的快速确定之后可以进行对可能损坏区域的更复杂的分析。
本发明的另一个实施例利用脉冲激光源而不是诸如SLED之类的宽频带光源。脉冲源在行进通过传感器后可被入射到干涉仪中并执行类似的读出。
执行测试以评价光纤传感器的一个实施例的灵敏度。开发了一种有限元模型,以为测试装载了裸光纤的10克圆柱作准备中。模型估计对于施加的10g重量有450με的应变。执行测试且结果为图8的扫描,它示出约0.5伏的峰值振幅,从而得到1.11mV/με的传感器对机械应变的灵敏度。传感器的固有噪声电平约是10mV,从而得到约9με的应变分辨率。
Claims (8)
1.一种监测结构上的应变的方法,包括:
使偏振维持单模光纤与所述结构固定地接触;
将光源的输出引导至所述光纤的输入端;

对所述电信号进行信号处理以提供指示所述结构上应变的位置的一个或多个输出信号。
2.如权利要求1所述的方法,其特征在于,固定地接触还包括将所述光纤嵌入到所述结构中,使得所述结构的应力被转移到所述光纤,并且在不需要从所述光纤去除保护涂层的情况下检测所述应变。
3.如权利要求1所述的方法,其特征在于,所述结构是灯丝缠绕的复合结构,并且其中固定地接触所述结构还包括将所述光纤灯丝缠绕到复合缠绕结构中以便在制造所述结构的过程中将所述光纤集成到灯丝缠绕的复合结构中。
4.如权利要求1所述的方法,其特征在于,固定地接触所述结构包括将所述偏振维持单模光纤粘附到所述结构上。
5.如权利要求1所述的方法,其特征在于,所述光学干涉装置包括迈克耳逊干涉仪,并且在不需要在每一个应变转移点处使用离散的传感器的情况下检测沿着光纤长度的任一位置处的亮度变化。
6.一种用于监测结构上的应变的***,包括:
与所述结构固定地接触的偏振维持单模光纤;
被光学地耦合到所述光纤的光源,所述光源能够向所述光纤的输入端提供光脉冲;
以四十五(45)度对准所述光纤的偏振轴的偏振器;
光学干涉装置,用于由从所述光纤的输出发出的信号形成光学干涉,感测与转移到光纤上至少一个非预定的点的结构应变相对应的干涉中的亮度变化,并提供响应于此的电信号;
信号处理器,用于处理所述电信号以提供一个或多个经处理的输出信号,这种经处理的输出信号用于指示光纤上任一点处的应变的位置;以及
与所述一个或多个输出信号通信的输出***。
7.如权利要求6所述的***,其特征在于,所述光学干涉装置包括迈克耳逊干涉仪,并且在不需要在每一个应变转移点处使用离散的传感器的情况下检测沿着光纤长度的任一位置处的亮度变化。
8.如权利要求6所述的***,其特征在于,所述***能够检测沿所述光纤长度的不止一个点处的干涉变化,从而指示转移到所述光纤的应变的位置。
