Piston ring. The object of the invention is a piston ring. According to the invention it has a split ring with. annular removed part for mant in the ring an annular flange and an annular collar, this glue being cut in the vicinity of the split part to leave a notch. A second split ring is housed in the portion removed (read first.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention and a variant of detail.
Fig. 1 is a front view of the piston ring; .
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the returned segment; Fig. 3 is a partial enlarged perspective view of part of one of the rings; Fig. 4 is a partial view showing the split part of the other ring; Fig. 5 is an enlarged section taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 2; Fig. 6, 7, 8 and 9 are partial detail views of a variant of the seal; Fig. 10 is a view from the edge of the segment.
The piston ring shown consists of two superimposed expanding rings 11 and 12 (Figs. 1 and 5), these rings being made expandable by the fact that they are split at 13 and 14 respectively. To assemble the rings so as to obtain a substantially smooth peripheral or wear surface, the upper ring 12 has an annular removed portion 15 forming in the ring a flange 16. The removed portion is sized to receive the ring. ring 11 as indicated in the. fig. 5.
When the rings 11 and 12 are assembled, the split part 13 of the ring 11 will be placed in a diametrically positioned position opposite the slot 14 of the ring 12, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The flange t, iinulaire 16 of the ring 12 closes the slot 13 of the ring 11. As can be seen in FIG. 4, the edge of the ring 12 is flattened at 17, that is to say in the vicinity of the slot 14, tangentially to the annular part of the collar 18 of this ring, to allow the positioning a lip 19 carried by the ring 11.
The ring 11 consists of a strip por as this lip 19, the combined height of the strip and of the lip being equal to the height of the ring 12. The strip portion of the ring will be housed at 15; the lip 19 is located diametrically opposite the slot 13 of the same ring, and is placed in position by the flattened part 17 of this ring 12 above. The lip 19 effectively closes the gap 14 of the ring 12 and continues the curvature of the non-flattened part.
The purpose of the lip 19 and the flattened part of the ring 12 is to prevent the rings from rotating on top of each other. The lip 19 prevents this rotation, but at the same time does not in any way prevent the expansion of the rings. independently of each other.
To increase the closing effect, the ring 11 has an annular groove. oil 20 and the edge of the flange 16 of the ring 12 is bevelled as at 21 to provide a second oil groove (fig. 10).
In fig. 6 to 9 is shown a segment; the piston, whose ring 11 is provided with a lip? \ û having a rim projecting inwardly? 3 to enter a notch 24 of the ring 12, this notch being formed by cutting it, annular part of the collar 18 of this ring as shown in Figs. 6 and. 8. In this example the inwardly projecting rim 3 overlaps the slot 1.4 of the ring 1.
