Au dessin ci-annexé, donné à titre d'exemple La fig. 1 est une vue en plan d'une forme d'exécution de l'appareil et d'une partie d'un four dans lequel l'appareil .doit injecter un mélange de gaz combustible et d'air com burant; La fig. 2 est une coupe à plus grande échelle de cette forme d'exécution; La fig. 3 en est une vue en élévation en regardant dans la direction de la flèche 3 de la fig. 2;

Device injecting a gas mixture. This invention relates to an apparatus for injecting a gas mixture, comprising a box-envelope, a Venturi tube with an inlet cone projecting inside this box-envelope, a device for directing a jet of gas. motive gas in the inlet cone of the Venturi tube and a device for bringing into said box-jacket a gas to be mixed with the first gas in order to allow the driving gas to entrain the gas from this box-jacket in the Ven turi tube, the latter comprising between its inlet cone and its discharge cone an elongated constricted portion intended to equalize the flow rate of the mixture.
This elongated constricted part between the inlet and discharge cones of the Venturi tube, by virtue of the equalization of the mixing speed, results in a relatively high efficiency in the transformation of the speed energy of the mixing stream. in pressure energy. In addition, it has the effect of increasing the driving action of the motor jet, so that the general efficiency of the apparatus is greater than that of an ordinary jet suction device comprising a throttling of the tube. of Venturi of negligible length.
In the accompanying drawing, given by way of example, FIG. 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of the apparatus and of part of a furnace into which the apparatus is to inject a mixture of combustible gas and com burner air; Fig. 2 is a section on a larger scale of this embodiment; Fig. 3 is an elevational view looking in the direction of the arrow 3 in FIG. 2;
Fig. 4 is a view of part of the furnace showing in section a nozzle-burner supplied by the apparatus; Figs. 5 and 6 are cross sections of the Venturi tube of the apparatus.
The combustible gas which is to serve as driving gas is supplied under pressure by a supply pipe 10 to a chamber 11, an adjustable shut-off valve 12 being arranged in this tu -, - au to regulate the arrival of gas to the, chamber as well as its pressure. The: combustible gas chamber <B> Il </B> -is formed in a pro longing of the box-envelope 13, comprising an air chamber 14 separated from the gas chamber by a partition and to which it is connected by an injection nozzle 15. The air enters the chamber 14 through inlet openings 16, the free passage section of which can be adjusted by means described below.
A Venturi tube 20 is mounted with inlet soli cone 21 protruding into the air chamber 14 of the casing 13 to receive the gas jet which spurts out through the nozzle 15.
The discharge cone 22 of this tube 20 connected to the inlet cone 21 by a constricted part 23 supplies the mixture to nozzles-burners applied to a furnace. The mouth of the cone is in the air chamber 14 at a point beyond the air intake openings 16 so as to form an annular space around the tube giving rise to a uniform flow of air in the cone d. entry of the tube. The Venturi tube is made in one piece, of metal or other suitable material, provided with a flange serving to secure it, by means of screws, to a wall of the envelope 13.
The inlet cone and the discharge cone of the Venturi tube have the usual shape, with a suitable inclination of their internal walls to maintain approximately constant proportions of combustible gas and air in the mixture with variations. in the amount of mixture supplied, and also so that the energy of the driving gas can be used as efficiently as possible to supply the mixture at the desired pressure. If the opening angle of the discharge cone of the tube is too large, an efficient transformation of speed energy into pressure energy is not obtained and, moreover, the presence of eddies may interfere with the maintenance of constant proportions of the constituent gases of the mixture.
On the other hand, too small an opening angle would result in an excessive length of the c (') rie and would lead to exaggerated losses by friction. We have. found that an opening angle of <B> 10 '</B> for <B> IL, </B> discharge cone gives good results under ordinary operating conditions. fii the angle of oLiver Cure of the inlet cone \? 1 is too large, the constricted part 23 of the tube will not be properly filled by the air entering it and it will result.
(the eddies which will control the entrainment and the maintenance of the proportions, with variations in the quantity of the mixture which flows. For too small an angle, there will be. an excessive friction of the air arriving at the part. constricted 23. Due to these considerations, the Ven turi tube will have its cones, inlet and discharge established (the way that the minimum section (the gas and air jet always maintains the same position in the constricted 23 without excessive friction of the jet on the walls of the cones.
The constricted part 23 of the Ven turi tube is elongated so as to have a great length in relation to its diameter. If this part were not elongated, the central part or core (the entrained gas and air jet, part whose flow is relatively fast, would have a tendency to cross the central part of the constricted part and to arrive in the discharge cone with the parts of the stream closest to the walls moving at a much slower speed, which would make effective pressure build-up in the discharge cone impossible.
The elongated, constricted portion, on the contrary, serves to equalize the flow velocity of the mixture over the entire cross section of the mixture stream and causes the stream to enter the discharge cone with an approximately uniform velocity such in all its parts that In the cone, an efficient transformation of speed energy into pressure energy is obtained. With this elongated choke portion, it is not necessary to locate the nozzle so far from the inlet cone of the tube as with tubes having chokes of negligible length.
A considerable increase in the driving effect of the gas injected by the nozzle is also obtained, thanks to the elimination of

<SEP> a <SEP> length 6 to 7 times greater than the diameter for the constricted part, the diameter of the latter being the same over all this length, as is the case with the variant of the tube 20a of FIG. 5, and by placing the nozzle near the inlet end of the tube, a perfect equalization of the flow velocity is achieved for the maximum amount of air, ensuring good conditions for retransfering the air. velocity energy into maximum pressure energy in the discharge cone.
A shorter choked part does not give as good equalization of speeds, and with an increase in the. length of the constricted part, the total speed, and therefore the amount of entrained air, decreases.
It is not necessary for the glued sealing part to have the same diameter over its entire length. It could also have a slightly inclined wall widening towards the discharge cone, as in the tube variant 20b of FIG. 6.
However, for manufacturing reasons, the constricted part presents advantageously. the form shown in FIG. 2, with the same diameter over its entire length with a slow transition from its wall to the wall of the discharge cone.
The gas nozzle 15 has a shape such as to give the gas jet as much force as possible; it has a rounded inlet followed by a straight part, of sufficient length to properly direct and shape the jet. To facilitate the.
manufacture and allow rapid replacement of the gas nozzle at will, the latter is formed by a threaded part screwed into a removable nozzle 25 screwed, in turn, into a threaded hole made in the partition between the gas chamber and the inner tube of the box-envelope 13.
The wall of the opposite gas chamber Îi, said partition comprises one or opening through which one can have access to place or remove the gas nozzle; this or verture is normally closed by means of a cover 27 held in place by a screw passing through a bracket 28.
To obtain the best results, the gas nozzle is placed with the outlet orifice (its nozzle near the free end is plugged into the inlet cone of the Venturi tube and as much as possible in the plane of this end, as shown in fig. 2, and furthermore it will protrude sufficiently towards the interior of the air chamber 14 so that the inlet of the Venturi tube is at a suitable distance from the bulkhead between the air chamber and the gas chamber so as not to obstruct the arrival of air in the Venturi tube.
In the apparatus shown, the cross-section of the orifice of the gas nozzle depends on the gerire of combustible gas to be employed, in the sense that the richer the gas, the smaller the orifice, and vice versa. A change in the proportions of the mixture can be effected by changing the section of the orifice of the gas nozzle, which can be done quickly in the apparatus shown by changing the part 6 forming the nozzle.
However, a variation or slight modification of the proportions can be conveniently effected by adjusting the air supply to chamber 14; to this end, the apparatus shown comprises a rotary flap for controlling the air intake openings 16, this flap being formed of two juxtaposed plates 30, 31 pierced with openings corresponding to the openings 16, in such a way that by turning the shutter more or less, we can close the openers or less - Turkish:

the arriz-ée of the air in the chamber 14 is reduced and the pressure in this chamber. decreases; a proportionately smaller amount of air therefore enters the sealed part of the Venturi tube with the gas. By this means, it is therefore possible to carry out a limited adjustment of the proportions without appreciably affecting their maintenance when the quantity of mixture supplied varies within the ordinary operating limits of the apparatus.
The control flap is connected by a connecting rod 32 to a shut-off valve 33 interposed in the fuel gas inlet pipe 10, so (read when the fuel gas inlet is cut off, the intake openings (air 16 are also closed.
In fig. 1, the apparatus is shown as being connected to several nozzles 40 or mixture discharge tubes, belonging to a furnace intended to burn (gaseous explosive mixtures.
