Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for processing and generating sound signals according to the preamble of claim 1. The invention further relates to an apparatus for processing and generating sound signals according to the preamble of claim 21.
In many types of fitness training, such as Jogging, running on a treadmill or cycling, it is common to listen to music with headphones. The reproduction of normal stereo signals by means of headphones has the disadvantage that the music seems to play in the head or in the vicinity of the head and thus seems to move unnaturally with the sportsman.
The object of the present invention is to further develop a music playback device to the effect that the user of this device in the exercise of his sporting activity perceives the music as originating from the environment.
The object is solved by the features of patent claim 1.
Advantageous developments emerge from the dependent claims. The advantage of the invention is that the apparently external reproduction of the music as well as the resulting relation of the music to the environment through which the sportsperson moves results in a more natural perception of the music as well as the activity performed (e.g., running or cycling). Another advantage of the invention is that by the additional reproduction of sounds that would occur when practicing the sport in a natural environment, or that occur in the natural environment, even when practicing the sport with a fixed training device in a closed space to awaken some of the positive emotions associated with practicing sport in a natural environment. This effect can be further enhanced by a visualization of the natural environment.

«Binaural reverberation using two parallel feedback delay networks.» 40th International AES Conference, Tokyo, 2010. In the present invention, music (or any other source signal) is reproduced by means of virtual sound sources which may seem to be fixed in the environment. For such reproduction, the sound sources must move relative to the sportsman's head, which can be achieved by a binaural reproduction of the music. Methods for efficient binaural sound signal reproduction (so-called binaural reverberators) are publicly known. The following conference contribution can serve as an example: F. Menzer. "Binaural reverberation using two parallel feedback delay networks." 40th International AES Conference, Tokyo, 2010. The positions of the sound sources that play the music signal can either be continuously calculated based on parameters or fixed, in the latter case the position and the movement speed and direction of the athlete (and thus the relative positions of the sound sources to the athlete) must be determined by means of a position determination method. An example of a set of parameters that allows the calculation of positions relative to the sportsman is: speed, distance between sound sources, lateral distance between the sportsman's line of movement and the speakers. In this case, either the sound sources or the person can move in the simulation. Examples of positioning methods include Global Positioning System (GPS) and camera-based positioning (with or without "markers" carried by users to facilitate position determination). The former method (GPS) is particularly useful in large areas outside of buildings (eg when jogging in the forest) and the second method is particularly suitable in small areas and interiors, which can be completely recorded by a few cameras (eg Sports training in a hall).
Figure 1 shows several virtual sound sources (2) which do not move and between which a person (10) with two ears (1) moves. The positions of the sound sources as well as the person can be calculated (in the case of the person as a function of time) by means of the following parameters: speed of movement (3), distance between sound sources (4) and lateral distance between the person's line of motion and the sound sources (5).
Another application is the exercise of movement activities on a non-moving sports equipment, e.g. a treadmill, a rowing machine or a stationary bike. The spatial reproduction of music or other sound signals can auditory simulate the movement that would be experienced the sportsman, if he would exercise the sport on solid ground, a real rowboat, or a normal bike. Especially suitable for this is a spatial reproduction of sound signals, in which the positions of the sound sources are calculated based on parameters. For example, the speed parameter can either be specified by the user or taken directly from the sports equipment. In the case of a fixed sports device in a room (e.g., a gym), it may be useful to regard the user as standing and simulating moving sound sources.
Fig. 2 shows several virtual sound sources (2) moving at a speed v (6) while the person (10) is not moving.
Fig. 3 shows a plurality of virtual sound sources arranged in an infinitely repeating pattern (7) and of which only a small number of sound sources (8) are active in the vicinity of the user (10). This allows a realization of the method with a low computational effort, while the user gets the impression that there are an infinite number of sound sources.
Fig. 4 shows a headphone (9) carrying user (10) on a stationary bike (12). The headphones (9) are connected by means of an audio output (24) with a sound signal reproduction device (11). The binaural acoustic simulation in the sound signal playback device (11) gives the user (10) the impression that virtual sound sources (2) are moving around him at a speed (6).
In the case of using a fixed sports equipment (eg, a treadmill in a fitness center), it may be desirable to play not only music but also sounds that would be produced if the exercise were performed in a natural environment (eg, step noise which are typical of a gravel road), as well as other sounds that would be audible in the natural environment (eg birdsong, the sound of a stream, etc.). To assist the auditory impression, a visual representation of the sound sources may also be implemented, e.g. by means of a video on which a natural environment with gravel path, brook, etc. is visible. The visual representation may take place on the device display or via a connected image display device (e.g., screen or projector).
Fig. 5 shows a user (10) on a stationary bike (12) with a sound signal playback device (11), which has a graphic display (13) and via a video output (14) connected to a screen (15) is. The screen is in a natural environment occurring sound sources (17), which are also reproduced acoustically as virtual sound sources. In addition, the sound signal reproduction device is connected via a parameter interface (18) to the stationary bicycle (12), via which information about the movement speed to be simulated can be obtained.
Fig. 6 shows a user (10) on a treadmill (20) with a sound signal playback device (11) which is connected via a video output (14) to a projector (16). The projected image represents sound sources (17) occurring in a natural environment, which are also reproduced acoustically as virtual sound sources. In addition, the sound signal player is connected via an audio input (24) to a microphone (19) near the user's feet, which picks up the user's footsteps on the treadmill.
Fig. 7 shows schematically a sound signal reproducing apparatus for carrying out the method according to the invention. The illustrated embodiment shows a data processing system with a microprocessor or a digital signal processor (DSP) (21), memory (27), a display (13) and interfaces (23), all of which exchange information over a common data bus (22).
The interfaces for parameters (18) and for an input signal (24), the binaural Ausgangssigna! (25) and the video output (14) can be either as hardware (eg serial interface, l2C bus, D / A converter, A / D converter, analog video interface, digital video interface) or as a wireless connection (eg Bluetooth, Wireless LAN). The binaural output signal (25) can be fed directly to a headphone (9). The parameter interface can be directly connected to a sports device such as be connected to a stationary bike (12).
The sounds to be played are read from a storage medium (28) or supplied to the device via an audio input or data link (e.g., over an IP network). The storage medium (28) may be e.g. be executed as a hard disk or solid state drive (flash memory).
