The present invention relates to automatic watches. Such watches have been known for a long time. They comprise a movement provided with a barrel, an oscillating mass and an automatic mechanism arranged so that the movements of the mass ensure the winding of the mainspring. More precisely, this mechanism makes it possible to transform a movement of the mass, which is done in both directions, into a movement in one direction only while reducing the speed of rotation and by multiplying the arming torque.
Also known are watches with several movements, the latter being reassembled either manually or each equipped with an automatic mechanism and a mass ensuring the winding barrel. Such watches allow, for example, to display the time of several time zones. If the watch is equipped with manual winding movements, this involves significant handling. In the case of a watch with several movements with automatic winding, they must be small, so that reassembly can be problematic.
The object of the present invention is to improve the winding in such watches. For this purpose, the automatic watch according to the invention comprises a box, a support rigidly mounted in the box, several movements fixed on the support and each provided with at least one barrel, and at least one automatic winding mechanism. According to the invention, this watch comprises, in addition, a mobile mass of inertia and kinematic links connecting this mass to the barrels that comprise the movements.
By thus providing several movements of small dimensions on the same support, it is possible to reassemble these movements simultaneously in a safe and effective manner.
Advantageously, the mass of inertia is rotatably mounted on the support. In this way, the mass can rotate in good conditions and the connection between the mass and the mobile carried by each movement and arming the mainspring, can be done with good accuracy.
Due to the fact that the mass comprises:
a body provided with pivoting means on the support, and
weights attached to this body, together defining a center of gravity of the mass offset from its pivot center, it is possible to adjust the torque produced by this mass, and thus adapt the watch to the conditions of use by the carrier.
In a first embodiment, each movement is provided with its own automatic mechanism, which provides the reduction and transformation of the two-way rotation movement in one direction.
In a second embodiment, the watch has only an automatic mechanism, ensuring the transformation of a rotational movement in both directions in a rotational movement in one direction only.
The invention will be better understood on reading the description which follows, given by way of example and with reference to the drawing in which FIGS. 1and 2represent respectively a watch according to the invention seen from above, and from below with the bottom removed, while FIG. 3 shows the mass of inertia returned.
The watch shown in FIG. 1comporte, conventionally, a box 10, a dial 12 defining four display areas 12a, 12b, 12c and 12d, arranged in a square, each corresponding to the time of a time zone, which is displayed by means of hour 14 and minute hands 16.
As illustrated in FIG. 2, the watch comprises, at the rear of the dial, a support 18 fixed to the box 10 by means of screws 19, one of which is visible, on which four movements 20a, 20b, 20c and 20d are arranged, each carrying a set of needles 14 and 16.
Each movement 20, which may be for example of the type marketed by the house ETA (Switzerland) under the reference 2671 is provided with an automatic winding mechanism schematically shown at 22 and which comprises a wheel 24 disposed at its center. The support 18, advantageously made of brass or aluminum, carries a shaft 26 which serves to pivot a mass of inertia 28. The latter carries a toothed wheel 30. Wheels 32 and 34, pivotally mounted on the support 18, mesh with on the one hand with the wheel 30 and on the other hand respectively with the wheels 24a, 24b and 24c, 24d.
As shown in FIG. 3, the mass 28 comprises a body 36 and cylindrical weights 38 arranged on a circle, at its periphery, on an arc not exceeding 180 [deg.]. In this way, the center of gravity G of the assembly formed of the body and the weights is offset with respect to the center of pivoting P, so that the accelerations experienced by the watch generate a torque that rotates mass 18.
The weights are made of a heavy material, for example gold, brass or tungsten carbide. They can be riveted, glued or screwed on the body 36. In the latter case in particular, it is possible to modify the torque of the mass of inertia and thus adjust it to the wearing conditions to which the watch is subjected, by removing or by adding one or more weights.
The mass 28 is dimensioned so that the path it sweeps completely covers the movements 20, the weights 38 being even disposed beyond these movements.
The mass 28 is mounted on the shaft 26 by means of a ball bearing which is fixed by its central portion on the shaft 26, while the ring is fixed to the body 36 by means of screws. Both the ball bearing and the screws fixing it to the body 36 are not apparent, in order to avoid overloading the drawing. Such an arrangement is well known to those skilled in the art.
Each of the movements is provided with a winding stem and time setting 40, which carries a ring 42 which allows, in a conventional manner, both to arm the mainspring and put in the hour hands 14 and 16.
In the embodiment described, each movement is equipped with its own automatic winding mechanism. It is also conceivable to provide a single mechanism for reducing the rotational movement from the mass of inertia and transforming a two-way movement into a movement in one direction. This mechanism will then be advantageously mounted on the support, the kinematic connections then connecting the mechanism to the barrels to arm their springs. In such a configuration, the parts of this mechanism can be accommodated in the thickness of the movements, thereby reducing the total thickness of the watch.
In this way, although the movements are small, to allow the wearing of the watch in good conditions, the winding of the springs is efficient, because of the large diameter that presents the mass 28. Moreover, still because of this large diameter, it is possible to replace the heavy material sectors usually equipping the masses of inertia, by weights that allow adjustment of the armature torque.
The described solution uses a mass of inertia rotor type. It goes without saying that the watch could also be equipped with a mass oscillating between two extreme positions, either in a linear movement or in a pivoting movement. The number of movements could also be greater or less than four. It is also possible to provide, in addition, the watch with an electronic movement, which would give a reference time, which would allow a time setting of other movements on the basis of an internal reference. This electronic movement can be equipped with a battery as well as a battery. In the latter case, the accumulator could be recharged by means of a generator driven by the mass of inertia.
Thus, thanks to the configuration described, it is possible to make a watch with several movements, automatic type occupying a relatively small space, while providing good quality winding conditions.
