The invention relates to a method for covering a cut edge of a provided on both surfaces with a sealable protective layer board web by means of a foldable edge to the cut and connectable by heating and pressing with the surfaces of the board web cover strip as a sealable tape strip with a flat side of the Cutting edge of the continuously supplied cardboard web introduced at a merge point and then guided parallel to the cut edge to be protected, thereby folded over and then pressed.
The invention further relates to an apparatus for performing the method.
In cartons or can-like containers which are filled with a preferably liquid product, there is the problem that the cut edges, in particular the inner cut edges,
not surface protected. Through the open cut edge, the contents can penetrate into the box. For this reason, it is provided in a known method and a known device of the type mentioned (German Offenlegungsschrift 2 102 001), at least for the later inner cutting edge to install an edge protection. As an edge protection serves a strip band of flexible, impermeable material, which is folded around the cut edge to be protected and with both surfaces of the cutting edge containing board web is tightly connected. In the known method, a strip strip is unwound from a supply roll, guided parallel to the cut edge of the cardboard web to be protected and thereby folded over.
It is provided that the cardboard web and the strip strip are heated together after its folding and then pressed. A disadvantage of the known method and the known device is that the strip strip is more or less loosely folded around the open cut edge before the heating and pressing take place.
The invention is based on the object, the cover strip so tightly applied to the cut edge to be protected, that he can no longer slip under any circumstances.
The object is achieved in that the paperboard web heats up to sealing temperature on both surfaces in the region of the cut edge to be covered before reaching the junction point and the strip strip on reaching the junction point, before folding,
is attached to the cutting edge.
By the inventive sequence of process steps, the strip strip is securely fixed even before folding to the cut edge to be protected. The strip strip is therefore already before folding and then always safe at the cutting edge.
It is useful if the strip strip is pressed at the said process step at the junction to the cutting edge. This can be done, for example, by an annular groove in a guide strip deflecting the strip strip at the point of union into which the cut edge "dips" with a certain pressure. At the same time it is thereby possible to align the strip strip at the junction to the cutting edge.
As a result, the cover strip is always guided in the desired manner, for example centrally, to the cutting edge.
In an embodiment of the invention, it is provided that the strip strip after stapling first folded in V-shape and then in U-shape and then pressed with the surfaces of the board web. Such a multilevel folding makes the process even.
Further advantages and features of the invention will become apparent from the dependent claims, in particular the device claims and the following description of an embodiment schematically illustrated.
[0010] In the drawings:

<Tb> FIG. 4 <sep> in a likewise greatly enlarged illustration a partial section along the sectional surface IV-IV of FIG. 2,
<Tb> FIG. 5 <sep> in likewise greatly enlarged illustration a partial section along the sectional surface V-V of FIG. 2,
<Tb> FIG. 6 shows a partial section through the protected cardboard web along the sectional area VI-VI of FIG. 2.
The continuously supplied paperboard web 1 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 is transported in the transporting direction A by a delivery roller pair 2.
As can be seen from the enlarged sectional view of FIG. 1A, the cut cardboard web 1 is provided with two mutually parallel surfaces 3 and 4, each having a sealable protective layer 5 and 6 respectively. These protective layers 5 and 6 may be layers of polyester.
However, the lateral open cutting edge 7 is not provided with a protective layer 5, 6 after the cutting of the cardboard web 1, so that after producing a container of any kind this cutting edge 7 is unprotected, so that optionally filling material can penetrate through this cutting edge 7 in the container material ,
For this reason, it is customary, the unprotected edges 7 by a cover strip 8 - see also later to be described Fig. 6 - to cover and thereby protect. Such a cover strip 8 is according to FIGS. 1 and 2, and as already known from the above-mentioned prior art, as strip strip 9 unwound from a supply roll 10 in the withdrawal direction B and then to be protected cut edge 7 in a manner to be described later folded.
This strip strip 9 is a liquid-impermeable, very flexible and extremely thin material which does not appreciably change the wall thickness of the board web 1 after the cutting edge 7 has been protected. Despite its thinness, the cover strip 8 may consist of several layers of material, for example, two polyester layers, between which there is a polyethylene insert, which serves the handling of the strip strip 9. Of course, however, a strip tape 9 made of mono material is possible.
The strip strip 9 is brought to a junction 11 with its flat side 12 to the cutting edge 7 of the board web 1. This is done by means of a guide roller 13 which rotates in the drive direction C and which will be described in more detail later.
The strip band 9, which is guided parallel to the cut edge 7 from the junction point 11, is then folded over the cut edge 7 by means of a folding device 14. So that the cover strip 8 can be firmly connected to the protective layers 5 and 6 of the board web 1, a heater 15 is provided even before the junction point 11, 7 hot air nozzles 16 are directed against both surfaces 3 and 4 of the board web 1 in the region of the cutting edge. As a result, the sealable protective layers 5 and 6 of the board web 1 are brought to sealing temperature in front of the junction point 11.
Due to the selected sequence of functional elements, the strip band 9 can already be attached centrally to the cutting edge 7 with its flat side 12 before it is folded over by means of the folding device 14 and then pressed against the surfaces 3 and 3 by means of a pressing device 18 having two pressure rollers 18 4 of the board web 1 is pressed. The strip band 9 can thereby no longer slip during the folding process, and also the cover strip 8 is firmly against the cut edge 7 to be protected.
As can be seen in particular from Fig. 1, the guide roller 13 is formed as the strip band 9 deflecting deflection roller. As a result, the strip strip 9 can be pressed against the cutting edge 7 and simultaneously aligned with the cutting edge 7.
The guide roller 13 has for this purpose lateral annular collars 19 and 20, between which the strip band 9 is guided. The cutting edge 7 of the board web 1 is guided by a circumferential groove 21 of the guide roller 13. The board web 1 thus dives into the circumferential groove 21 with a certain pressure, thereby fixing the strip band 9 to the cutting edge 7.
The folding device 14 performs a two-stage folding of the strip strip 9 to the cutting edge 7, wherein first in a stationary arranged forming plate 22, the strip band 9 V-shaped and in a subsequent, driven in the direction of rotation D form roller 23 is folded over in a U shape.
This will be described in more detail later with reference to FIGS. 4 and 5.
Hereinafter, based on the greatly enlarged Fig. 3 to 5 individual functional elements will be explained in more detail.
According to FIG. 3, the strip band 9 provided for the cover strip 8 is pressed and stapled centrally by the guide roller 13 against the cutting edge 7 of the board web 1, since the protective layers 5 and 6 of the surfaces 3 and 4 of the board web 1 are previously attached to the heating device 15 had been brought to sealing temperature. It can be seen in Fig. 3, the lateral annular collars 19 and 20 of the guide roller 13, whereby the strip band 9 is guided laterally and thus aligned with the cutting edge 7.
It can also be seen how the cutting edge 7 of the board web 1 dips into the circumferential groove 21 of the guide roller 13 and thereby presses the strip strip 9 against the cutting edge 7.
Fig. 4 shows the stationary forming plate 22 with its substantially V-shaped folding surfaces 24 and 25, wherein only the slot base for adaptation to the cutting edge 7 deviates from the ideal V-shape. The cover strip 8 is thus prefolded in a V-shape and thereby approximated to the surfaces 3 and 4.
The folding surfaces 24 and 25 are preceded by small noses 26 and 27, which serve an isosceles shaping.
The circumferential forming roller 23 shown in Fig. 5 has walls 28 and 29 which begin with a suitable inlet slope and then extend parallel to each other in a narrow folding slot 30.
As a result, the cover strip 8 or strip strip 9 is folded in a U-shape around the cut edge 7 to be protected. The result can be seen in FIG. 6. Since the heating of the protective layers 5 and 6 of the board web 1 to the pressure rollers 18, the free legs of the cover strip 8 can be pressed firmly against the surfaces 3 and 4 of the board web 1.
