Mikrotiter<(RTM)>-Platten von Beckman Coulter, Inc., 90 Boroline Road, Allendale, New Jersey, USA) bzw. deren Wells.
Fig. 3) ausgebildet.
Fig. 5).
Fig. 5).
Systeme.
The invention relates to a device for manipulating samples in containers and / or on slides, according to the preamble of independent claim 1, and the use of such devices, according to independent claim 10.
[0002] Devices and systems are known for use in genomics, proteomics for drug discovery and in clinical diagnostics which include, for example, a liquid handling robot and an object transfer robot. One such system is the work platform marketed by the Applicant under the name "Genesis Robotic Sample Processor".
It is a device for manipulating samples in containers and / or on slides, wherein the containers and / or slides are arranged on a, substantially horizontal field with a longitudinal extent X and a transverse extent Y and wherein the device comprises a first and comprises a second robot manipulator. The first robotic manipulator is adapted to receive and / or deliver fluids within this X-Y field and includes pipette tips which are raisable and lowerable in the Z direction. The second robot manipulator is designed for transporting objects within this X-Y field and comprises a gripping device, which is rotatable essentially about a vertical axis, for holding the objects, which can be raised or lowered in the Z direction.
The apparatus also includes drives for moving the robotic manipulators and processors for controlling the actions and movements of the robotic manipulators.
Although these and similar known from the prior art work platforms from other manufacturers have proven in practice, but it could be seen a disadvantage in that the second Roboteremanipulator each having a limited by the first Roboteremanipulator workspace.
The object of the present invention is to propose a device for manipulating samples in containers and / or on slides in the range of an XY field, in which a first and a second robot manipulator can work at least the entire area of the XY field ,
This object is solved by the features of independent claim 1.
Further features emerge from the dependent claims.
The present invention comprises the following advantages:
The two robot manipulators operate essentially the same field, virtually without interfering with each other.
The action areas of the two robot manipulators can be freely selected.
The second robot manipulator can pass the first robot manipulator with or without objects loaded.
The repositioning of a wide variety of objects with the second robot manipulator, e.g. Moving active devices in the form of scanners (1D, 2D), cameras, printheads, etc. enables the use of the functions of these devices across the entire field of the work platform. These active devices can also be fetched from outside the field with the second robot manipulator or temporarily put away there.
By an additional extendability of the second robot manipulator also levels below the actual working field can be operated.
Because the transport of objects and liquid handling are work that is often out of sync with each other, performing this work with two independent robotic manipulators is beneficial.
On the basis of exemplary and the scope of the present invention in no way limiting drawings, this invention will be explained in more detail with reference to schematic drawings. Showing:

FIGS. 1 to 5 show a first embodiment of the device 1 according to the invention for manipulating samples 2 in containers 3 and / or on microscope slides 4.
As samples are fluids, but also immobilized on surfaces molecules such as DNA, RNA and proteins and fragments or any combination thereof. Reagent vessels (eg sample tubes from Eppendorf AG, Barkhausenweg 1, D-22331 Hamburg, Federal Republic of Germany), bottles, troughs, microplates (eg microtiter <(RTM)) plates from Beckman Coulter, Inc., 90 Boroline Road, are considered to be containers. Allendale, New Jersey, USA) or their wells.
The containers 3 and / or slides 4 are arranged on at least one, substantially horizontal and preferably rectangular field 5 with a longitudinal extent X and a transverse extent Y. This field 5 can also be referred to as a work platform and is shown in FIG. 1 without a container 3, a slide 4 and objects 12.
This device 1 comprises a first robot manipulator 6 for receiving and / or dispensing fluids. Fluids in the context of the present invention are true solutions, suspensions (e.g., cell suspensions), emulsions, and body fluids (such as blood, urine, etc.); such fluids also include gases and liquid-gas mixtures. The first robot manipulator 6 comprises a first arm 7 extending in the Y direction and at least one first rail 8 extending in the X direction.
The first arm 7 is slidably mounted on this first rail 8 and movable along this in the X direction substantially in the entire region of the longitudinal extent back and forth. In this case, the first arm 7 comprises pipette tips 9, which extend substantially vertically and which can be moved back and forth in the Y-direction essentially in the entire region of the transverse extension and can be raised and lowered in the Z-direction (compare FIGS. 2 and 3). Notwithstanding the figures shown, the first robot may be equipped with only a single pipette tip 9, but also with 2, 8, 16 or more pipette tips 9. All pipette tips can be designed to be lowerable or liftable together, in groups or individually in the Z direction, and likewise actuated together, in groups or individually for receiving and / or dispensing liquids.
The first robot arm 7 may be designed as a robot manipulator for grasping and transporting objects 12 (not shown).
This device 1 also comprises a second robot manipulator 11 for transporting objects 12. Such objects may be active devices (e.g., scanners (1D, 2D), cameras, printheads). Sample containers (eg tubes made of glass or plastic, microplates with eg 96 or more wells), troughs (eg "8" or "384" trough with 25-200 ml of a stock solution) and microscope slides (eg glass slides for light microscopy , Maldi targets, nitrocellulose for nucleic acids), but also sensors (eg pH probes, temperature sensors) are also referred to herein as objects 12. Special objects prepared for a particular work platform are e.g. Racks, lids and microplate stacks.
The second robot manipulator 11 comprises a second arm 13 and at least a second, extending in the X direction rail 14. On this rail 14, the second arm 13 is movably mounted and along this rail 14, the second arm in the X direction back and forth movable. The second arm includes a gripping device 16 rotatable about a substantially vertical axis 15 and an angle alpha for holding the objects 12. This gripping device is preferably removably coupled to the second arm such that different gripping devices designed to grip particular objects , can be used at will and automatically in the second arm 13.
The second arm 13 of the second robot manipulator 11 is designed here as an articulated arm.
The second arm 13 can optionally be moved without object 12, but also without inserted gripping device 16 along the second rail 14. Thus, it is possible that certain gripping devices (e.g., for microplate or tube centrifuge loading, for microplate incubation into an incubator) are preferably stored in one location and automatically picked up and deployed by the second arm 13 as needed. Afterwards, these special gripping devices are preferably automatically deposited again at a suitable location.
The arm 13 may then pick up another coupling device and perform other tasks accordingly, or even empty, and in compact position 17 to another site where it may receive another special gripping device (e.g., for loading a microplate reader).
Alternatively to the embodiment shown, the second arm 13 may be formed as a telescopic arm or as a combination of articulated arm and telescopic arm. The gripping device 16 can be moved back and forth in the Y direction and can be raised or lowered in the Z direction. In addition, this gripping device of the second arm 13 of the second robot manipulator 11 is preferably designed to be rotatable about a second substantially vertical axis 19 in any direction and at any angle beta.
A further alternative embodiment (not shown) comprises a first and a second robot manipulator for transporting objects 12. These two robotic manipulators are preferably attached to different rails 8, 14 and slidable along these rails 8, 14. At least one of these two robot manipulators is designed to be brought into a compact position 17 so that it can be moved past the other robot manipulator.
The device 1 also comprises all necessary drives (not shown) for moving the robot manipulators 6, 11 and processors (not shown) for controlling the actions and movements of the robot manipulators 6, 11.
The second arm 13 is - due to its construction as an articulated arm and / or telescopic arm - designed to be movable together and therefore, preferably together with the gripping device 16,
can be brought into a compact position 17 (see FIG. In this compact position 17, the second arm 13, together with the gripping device 16, can be moved past the first arm 7 of the first robot manipulator 6 in the X direction. As a result, the gripping device 16 for picking up or depositing objects 12-substantially independently of the current X position of the first arm-can be positioned at least within the entire field 5.
Preferably, the gripping device 16 is also positioned outside the field 5 for receiving or depositing objects 12. This is possible by the indicated action radius of the second arm 11 already in Fig. 1 in the region of the two ends of the rail 14.
By extending the second rail 14 and / or additionally provided extension options of the second arm 11, an area outside the field 5, which is at the same height as the field 5 and practically extends around this field, can be operated. In addition, it is thus also possible to achieve levels inside and outside the field 5 with the gripping device 16, which lie below the field in their Z position.
The device preferably comprises attached to the work platform or the field 5 mounting bracket 20 to which all rails 8, 14, 18 are arranged. These mounting brackets can be positioned practically anywhere along the field 5 and the rails (see Figures 1, 4 and 5), normally at least two support brackets 20 should be provided (see Fig. 5).
Preferably, it is also provided that the device 1 according to the illustrated, first embodiment, a single, extending in the X direction, second rail 14, which is fixed in the center of the support bracket 20. This first embodiment has a further, extending in the X direction, the first rail 18, which is arranged in a substantially horizontal plane in front of the first rail 8 and parallel thereto. What is in front of or behind the first track, however, depends on the viewer.
Notwithstanding in the embodiments disclosed so far, a trained as a main rail first rail 8 may be provided along which the first arm 7 moves. Parallel to this, the main load of the first arm 7 supporting main rail is then another, designed as an additional rail further first rail 18 is arranged.
This additional rail may be formed much daintier and serve only for supporting and guiding the first arm 7. The main and auxiliary rails can be arranged on a different plane from the horizontal or vertical plane so that there is a difference in level between the two rails. Preferably, the finer additional rail is arranged against the operator of the device and can fulfill additional design tasks.
As an alternative to the illustrations shown can be provided in a variant that the device 1 has a further, extending in the X direction, the first rail, which in a substantially vertical plane above or below the first rail 8 and parallel to this is arranged (not shown).
Preferably, however, all second rails 14 are arranged in the Z direction above the first rail 8 and also above the other first rails; however, an arrangement below is also possible.
Particularly preferred is a system for manipulating samples 2 in containers 3 and / or on slides 4, which comprises an analysis device, and / or a centrifuge, and / or a reader, and / or a washing device and also with at least one the described devices 1 or their variants is equipped.
Preferred uses of these devices 1 and this system are possible according to claim 10, characterized in that the second arm 13 moved together in a compact position 17 according to the invention and in the X direction on the first arm 7 of the first robot manipulator 6 is moved past.
It is especially preferred that the second arm 13 alone, together with the gripping device 16 or together with the gripping device 16 and an object 12, is moved past the first arm 7 of the first robot manipulator 6 in the X direction at least within the entire field 5. Such uses include receiving and / or depositing objects within and / or outside of the substantially horizontal field 5 of the work platform.
It is also particularly preferred to pick and / or deposit objects 12 in a plane higher or lower in the Z direction relative to the field 5.
So that the objects 12 can be placed and aligned practically arbitrarily, the second robot manipulator 11 preferably has two substantially vertical axes of rotation 15, 19, so that the objects 12 after recording with respect to these axes of rotation 15 and / or 19 by an angle alpha and / or beta twisted can be discontinued. The angles alpha or beta are preferably +360 deg. to -360.
While taken with the first robot manipulator 6 fluids from containers 3 and / or delivered to other containers 3 ¾ or on slide 4, 11 objects can be transported with the second robot manipulator.
Depending on the current position and current order of the two Roboterermanipulatoren 6, 11 may be that overlap the current work areas of the two Roboterermanipulatoren. In such cases, preferably, a processor for controlling the actions and movements of the robotic manipulators 6, 11 determines which of these robotic manipulators 6, 11 has priority over executing its order. For this purpose, a processor - depending on the order of one or both manipulators 6,11 - optimize the operation of the device 1 and the system and issue correspondingly modified orders to the robot manipulators 6,11.
As a practical example, it should be noted here that the first robot manipulator for liquid handling has the task of picking up the liquids from the wells of a microplate and delivering these samples to the surface of a Maldi target. In order to reduce the necessary paths of the first arm in the X direction, the second robot manipulator can now be instructed to place the entire microplate (if necessary with the rack on which it is placed) directly next to the Maldi target (or vice versa). In this way, the working field 5 can be continuously optimized and automatically adapted to the current jobs.
In Fig. 1 are the two Roboterermanipulatoren 6,11 in a rest position. The second robot manipulator 11 would have to be in the compact position 17 (see.
Fig. 3) and in the positive direction by 90 °. up to 180 deg. be rotated about the axis 19 so that it could be moved past the first robot manipulator 6.
In FIG. 2, samples 2 are dispensed onto the slides 4 with the first robot manipulator 6, while the second robot manipulator 11 is currently depositing an additional slide 4 (a Maldi target) on the rack 21.
In FIG. 3, the second robot manipulator 11 in its compact position 17 travels past the first robot manipulator 6 in the X direction. The pipette tips 9 of this first robot manipulator are either about to receive samples 2 from the containers 3 (shown by dashed lines) or to approach the position in which the samples 2 can be dispensed into the containers 3 '(shown in solid lines).
Because the first robot manipulator 6 occupies practically an extreme position in both cases, the relative to FIG. 1 by 90 deg. rotated, second robot manipulator 11 are also moved in both cases in the X direction on the first robot manipulator 6.
In FIG. 4, the first robot manipulator 6 delivers liquid into the containers 3, which - as well as the microscope slides 4 and the racks 21 - are simultaneously also referred to as objects 12. The second robot manipulator 11 is currently picking up an additional slide 4 (a Maldi target) from a rack 21 located far away from the containers 3 in order to place it on a rack closer to the containers for later sample application with the first robot manipulator 6 21 to sell (see.
Fig. 5).
Any combinations of the disclosed features of the invention belong to its scope.
The reference numerals in FIGS. 1 to 5 each denote the same features, even if not all features are named explicitly for each figure. Parts of the device that any person skilled in the art chooses at will to complete, e.g. Tubings for the pipette tips, pumps, drives for the robotic manipulators and the like have been omitted from the figures to make them clearer. Such parts are of course part of the inventive devices 1 or systems.
