The technical task for whose novel solution the novel centrifugal pump was invented is the production of process steam. Various types of devices and evaporator devices have been developed and built for the evaporation of process liquid. The new solution is a combination of the pump and the evaporator device. The fundamentally new idea is that instead of using an evaporator, a centrifugal pump is designed so that the evaporation takes place in the pump itself. This pump has a tubular part between the impeller and the diffuser, the "evaporator tube", and a connection for steam extraction. The evaporator tube is a cylindrical intermediate housing that connects the pump part to the impeller and the pump part to the diffuser.
Steam extraction is made possible from the central space of this intermediate housing. The new solution takes advantage of the fact that the process liquid has to be transported. The liquid must be brought to a higher pressure level for transport. The increase in the pressure of the liquid is often achieved by means of a centrifugal pump. Flow conditions prevail in the middle of a centrifugal pump, which - when a tubular space is formed - allow intensive evaporation, an effective separation of the vapor from the liquid and a vapor extraction. The technical novelty is that the processes of pumping, evaporation and water separation are integrated in a single device. This device is active in the sense that kinetic energy is supplied to the process liquid by the impeller of a centrifugal pump.
The physical characteristics of the new centrifugal pump are
- The elongated middle part in a centrifugal pump, the "evaporator tube", in which part no flow restriction is constructed towards the inside (to enable the formation of an evaporation surface), and
- A pipe section (connecting piece) that connects the central part of the "evaporation tube" with the environment and thus enables steam extraction.
To construct such a centrifugal pump, the middle part has to be extended in the axial direction, so that this part has a flow-directing outer jacket and has no flow-limiting walls in the inner part except for the pump shaft.
The steam extraction from the central space of this evaporator tube must be made possible with a steam extraction nozzle. The centrifugal force of the flowing liquid in this tubular component of the pump enables the independent formation of a cylindrical evaporation surface if the inner space of the pump is opened to a space with lower pressure. By using the centrifugal forces, a separation of the vapor phase from the liquid phase is also achieved. These centrifugal forces are naturally generated in the pump section (as a result of the operation of the centrifugal pumps).
An embodiment is given in the form of a drawing in Figure 1. The attached drawing shows a centrifugal pump that is designed so that steam can be drawn from the center of this pump. Essential elements of such a centrifugal pump are the shaft (2), the impeller (1) and the diffuser (6) integrated in the housing. The process liquid is labeled "liquid" in the figure. Arrows indicate the entry and exit of the process liquid. In the normal functioning of a centrifugal pump, the medium is accelerated by the kinetic energy of the impeller. A portion of the kinetic energy of the medium is then converted into pressure in another component, in the diffuser (6) into a different form of energy. The evaporator tube (3) is between these two parts.
The formation of an evaporator tube is the essence of the invention. The physical laws guarantee that evaporation will take place here. Since the liquid flows helically in the evaporator tube, it is pressed against the wall by centrifugal force. This pressure is proportional to the radius. From the middle of the evaporator tube, if this room is opened to another room with lower pressure, liquid will escape until an equilibrium is reached. At this equilibrium, a cylindrical surface is formed by the centrifugal force. Part of the liquid will evaporate on the cylindrical surface that forms. A separation of the vapor phase from the liquid phase will also take place in the evaporator tube, due to the centrifugal forces.
The steam extraction point in the figure is marked with the word "steam" and with an arrow, the arrow indicating the direction of flow of the process steam. Without the evaporator tube, the device in Figure 1 would be a conventional centrifugal pump. The new centrifugal pump, on the other hand, has, in addition to the suction nozzle (7) and pressure nozzle (9) of a centrifugal pump, also a steam nozzle (8).
