Beschreibung description
The invention relates to a device for copying transparent image originals onto light-sensitive material according to the preamble of claim 1.
In the case of photographic recordings which contain large differences in brightness in individual areas, the copies made are often overexposed in the bright areas or underexposed in the darker areas. As a result, details or finer structures on the paper image are reproduced very poorly or not at all.
DE-PS 2 820 965 describes a copying device in which a liquid crystal display is mounted between the light source and the photographic film. An electronic control creates a black and white negative mask of the original on this display. If the paper exposure is now carried out through the mask and the original, this results in a desired density compression. However, it has been found that color errors occur in the paper images produced in this way.
It is therefore the object of the invention to design a device for masking image originals in such a way that these color errors are avoided.
The object is achieved by a device with the features of claim 1. With this device, a dependence of the color of the paper print on the masking strength can be avoided.
This “color neutrality” of the lighting device does not mean that the copying light may not have any coloring, but that this coloring may not change from area to area despite different brightness. The copying light must consequently have the same coloration at different masking strengths, this not referring to the visible spectral range, but to the wavelength range which corresponds to the spectral sensitivity of the photographic paper. If the coloration changes with different masking strengths, one speaks of a color shift of the mask.
It is necessary that the color neutrality of the mask does not refer to the visual spectrum, but to the wavelength ranges in which the paper has its essential sensitivity. The main differences are in the red spectral range. While the maximum sensitivity of photo paper is usually at a wavelength of more than 700 nm, the human eye has only a very low sensitivity at this wavelength.
In a first exemplary embodiment, the lighting device with the aid of which the image original is illuminated is designed such that it only has an LED matrix. The individual LED elements can be controlled independently of one another, so that the actual light source also serves as a mask.
In another embodiment, a conventional light source, for example with a lamp, filter arrangement and mirror shaft, and an LCD matrix are used.
If both the use of an LED matrix and an LCD matrix is to prevent the individual areas from becoming visible on the paper image, they are either imaged out of focus in the paper plane using a lens and / or between the lighting device and the original image a smoothing matt screen is provided so that the boundaries of the areas on the paper cannot be seen.
If the local areas of an LCD matrix are to be changed directly in terms of their gray value, so-called guest host cells can preferably be used. With these dye-liquid crystals, a practically color-neutral change in brightness in the important spectral ranges can be achieved by targeted dye storage.
Both when using an LED matrix and when using a guest host liquid crystal display (hereinafter referred to as guest host LCDs), it is particularly advantageous if all local areas have their own control lines and thus control electronics directly individually can be controlled. An AC voltage source can be provided in order to control the brightness of the individual areas via the AC voltage applied. A separate amplifier must be provided for each area to control the AC voltage. If a high resolution of the lighting device with approximately 1000 to 2000 individual areas is required, an integrated circuit can be used, which is normally used to control TFT displays. However, since these modules cannot emit high voltages, but these voltages are required to achieve high luminosities and therefore short exposure times, it makes more sense to use voltage sources with pulsating direct current. The change in brightness of the areas is achieved by changing the effective value of the voltage. This effective value can be changed, for example, by influencing the curve shape of the voltage or by regulating the number of pulses that are switched through. This can be implemented in such a way that a switch is assigned to each area, via which either a DC voltage source or a comparison potential is switched to the area, and that a common switch is provided for all areas, via which the DC voltage source or the comparison potential is simultaneously connected to all areas becomes. If the common changeover switch is now switched at a frequency in the kHz range, preferably between 1 and 100 kHz, a local range can be activated if the changeover switch assigned to it is switched in opposite phase to the common changeover switch. If it is switched in phase, the respective area is deactivated. The brightness can now be regulated in such a way that the changeover switch assigned to the area switches a certain number of switching times during a defined period

In this way, the effective value of the voltage can be regulated via the size of the pulse packets that are connected.
There is now a certain contradiction in that the switching frequency of the common switch should be kept as low as possible, for example to be able to supply a guest-host cell with high voltage (high transparency) despite high line resistances between the voltage source and the cell; on the other hand, a high frequency is necessary in order to be able to generate enough different levels of transparency. This results in particular from the non-linear voltage-transparency curve of today's LCDs. In a preferred embodiment, the switching frequency of the changeover switch is therefore changed periodically. Each period starts with a high and ends with a low frequency. The width of the generated pulses consequently increases with the period. The voltage can also be controlled so that it is changed during the period. In this way, a voltage curve can be generated that only has as many pulses in each control period as transparency levels are required, and is nevertheless very well adapted to the non-linear transparency curve of the LCDs.
While the common changeover switch can be constructed discretely in a large number of local areas, the changeover switches assigned to the individual areas can be implemented with a commercially available integrated circuit. In order to avoid long line paths and a large number of control lines from control electronics to the display, it is advantageous to mount the integrated circuits directly on the matrix.
In order to ensure a color-neutral light / dark change of the local areas of the lighting device in a different way, these areas can be divided into several area elements. These area elements can only be switched to the "light" or "dark" state. This means that a section element that is switched to “dark” is not allowed to let light of the wavelengths classified as significant pass through. In this way, different gray levels can be achieved for each area by the combination of activated and non-activated area elements, without a color shift occurring. Ferroelectric liquid crystals are preferably used for this application.
Ferroelectric liquid crystals show bistable behavior. This means that each cell only has to be activated once before each copying process in order to put it in the required state. It then holds this until the next activation. This behavior enables simple matrix control of the display.
In order to be able to control each area with a sufficiently fine gradation of brightness, each of the individual areas has six different area elements. If the area elements are dimensioned so that neither the area of a
Elements can be formed from the sum of several areas of other elements, while the sum of several areas is equal to the sum of other areas, a gradation with sixty-four individual levels can be achieved when using six different area elements. To get a regular gradation, the areas have to behave like 1: 2: 4: 8: 16: 32. For example, if a finer gradation is required at high brightness than at low brightness or vice versa, the specified ratio can of course be changed accordingly.
If you want to get by with fewer area elements per area, the number of levels can also be increased using a timer. If, for example, an area has only two area elements - that would only be switchable in four stages - Hessen increases the levels with a controller that makes it possible to perform another switching operation during the copy exposure.
Further details and advantages of the invention emerge from the dependent claims in connection with the description of an exemplary embodiment, which is explained in detail with reference to the drawing.

So-called guest-host LCDs have proven to be particularly suitable for mask generation. With these LCDs, the gray value or the transparency can be controlled depending on the voltage. They also have a high temperature stability and both the transparency and the color neutrality are only slightly dependent on the viewing angle. In order to be able to use a guest-host LCD with these advantages, however, individual control of each cell is required. An enlarged detail of a guest host LCD is shown in FIG. 2. The individual cells 20 each have an input 30. A conductive plate 23, which is assigned to all cells 20 together, serves as the output. The second control line 32 common to all cells is connected to the plate 23. The control lines 30 run as a conductor bundle 24 between the individual cells 20. In order to keep the number of lines per conductor bundle as small as possible, the lines to the left and right of the center 25 of the LCD are combined into independent bundles.
To avoid galvanic processes in the individual cells, an alternating voltage must be applied to the cell. The transparency of the cell can then be controlled by the RMS value of the AC voltage. Since an analog amplification of the AC voltage for each individual cell of the display would be extremely complex, the effective voltage is regulated via the number of pulses switched through. A particularly simple example for realizing this circuit is shown in FIG. 3. A first control line 30 of the cell 20 is connected to the changeover switch 33, which connects the cell either to a direct current supply voltage 31 or to a reference potential 34. The second control line 32 for all cells is connected to a common changeover switch 35. This changeover switch 35 also connects the cell either to the direct current source 31 or to the reference potential 34. The switches are switched from their solid position to their dashed position at a predetermined frequency, for example 40 kHz. As a result, a rectangular DC voltage signal with the curve profile A is present on the first control line 30, while a signal with the profile after the curve B is present on the second control line 32. By reversing the direction of the voltage during each switching operation, the voltage applied to cell 20 runs according to curve C. FIG. 3a now shows the switching in a state in which alternating voltage pulses are switched through to cell 20, while the cell in FIG. 3b shown circuit with no pulses.
If one assumes that a gradation of transparency of approximately 50 density levels of the cell is sufficient for the masking and that the cell behaves linearly, a control period of 50 individual pulses is defined. The effective voltage and thus the density level of the cell are then controlled via the number of switched pulses per control period. For this purpose, only the switch 33 has to be controlled, while the switch 35 switches continuously with the predetermined frequency.
Fig. 4 zeigt ein Display 40 mit den Einzeizellen 20. 4 shows a display 40 with the single cells 20. The switch 35 common to all cells 20 is constructed discretely and switches the second control line 32 either to the supply voltage 31 or to the reference potential 34. The switches 33 for each cell 20 are integrated Circuits 41 realized and connected to the first control lines 30 via the outputs 42. The ICs 41 are also connected to the supply voltage 31 and the reference potential 34. The display is connected to the computer 11 indicated in FIG. 1 via the lines 43.
If the integrated circuits are on their own circuit board, all outputs of the ICs must be contacted with the display via flexible elements. The ICs are therefore preferably attached directly to the display. In this way, only a small number of control lines are required between the display and the computer.
Fig. 5a zeigt eine nichtlineare Transparenzkurve einer Guest-Host-Zelle. 5a shows a nonlinear transparency curve of a guest-host cell. In order to be able to produce the uniform transparency gradation Ti to T4, the cell must be supplied with the voltages Vi to V4. The required voltage is generated in that only a certain number of pulses are switched through in each control period 47. In the example shown in FIG. 5a, each control period must be broken down into at least 15 pulses in order to achieve an almost uniform gradation in 4 transparency levels. It can be seen in particular with the voltage V3 that it cannot be realized by an entire number of pulses and an even higher pulse frequency would therefore be necessary for a more precise gradation.
Fig. 5b zeigt ein bevorzugtes Ausführungsbeispiel. 5b shows a preferred embodiment. Here, not only the pulse width, but also the amplitude is varied in each control period 47. This enables adaptation to practically any transparency curve, although the number of impulses is not higher than the number of transparency levels. The illustration shows the point in time at which no further pulses are switched to the cell in each control period in order to achieve the transparency levels Ti to T4.
Auf diese Weise ist es möglich, mit der ständigen Bestrahlung durch die Lichtquelle 2 jeweils zu dem Ansteuerstrom die Durchlässigkeit 6a and 6b - starting from the copying machine according to FIG. 1 - an arrangement for monitoring the density profile of the LCD 5 according to FIG. 1 is shown. For this purpose, outside the cross-section of the mixing shaft 3, but in the area of influence of the light source 2 additional test pixel 5a is provided in the LCD. This pixel is surrounded by an additional aperture, so that a photosensor 48 arranged above it can only receive the light that has passed through the additional test pixel 5a. The permeability of the pixel 5a is controlled in the same way as the permeability of the pixels within the mixing shaft via the same control devices. In this way it is possible, with the constant irradiation by the light source 2, to transmit the drive current to the drive current

des Pixels 5a durch den Fotosensor 48 zu prüfen. Fällt der gemessene Lichtwert aus dem Toleranzrahmen, wird ein entsprechendes Warnsignal von dem Gerät an die Bedienungsperson gegeben. of the pixel 5a to be checked by the photo sensor 48. If the measured light value falls outside the tolerance range, the device sends a corresponding warning signal to the operator.
In addition, the uniformity of the permeability of the LCD can be checked at longer intervals. For this purpose, a component corresponding to the photosensor 48 is arranged on a device which can be displaced in the X and Y directions, which moves all pixels of the LCD one after the other and in each case measures the brightness values of the photosensor 48 which provide a measure of the permeability. For values falling outside the tolerance range, the voltage values in the control circuit can be readjusted automatically. This therefore allows an exact adjustment of the LCD in such a way that e.g. the regularity of the permeability can be checked at certain intervals and restored in the event of deviations.
In another embodiment, a ferroelectric LCD is provided for mask formation. The matrix is divided into a plurality of individual local areas 50 (FIG. 7). Each of these areas 50 is subdivided into six individually controllable area elements. The area elements a, b, c, d, e and f are controlled by the computer 11 once before each copying process and switched to either the greatest or the least transparency. The possible combinations of the individual area elements make it possible to achieve sixty-four levels of transparency of the entire area 50. Since the area elements a, b, c, d, e and f behave like 1: 2: 4: 8: 16: 32, there is a division into equally large levels.
If even more levels are required, time can be integrated as an additional variation factor. However, this means that switching must be carried out one or more times during the copying process. With just one additional switching operation during copying, the gradation can be doubled again to 128 levels. If a smaller number of stages is required, the number of area elements can also be reduced accordingly.
