Description
BESCHREIBUNG DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a method for monitoring the concentration of aerosols contained in a gaseous medium and a device for carrying out the method.
For example, in connection with controls of the pollution of atmospheric air, there is a need to monitor the concentration of suspended particles in the air, in particular of solid suspended particles in respirable sizes in the range of 0.1 to 1 [in diameter. Known methods and devices for determining aerosol concentrations are relatively complicated, complex and / or energy-consuming, which is why they are suitable for use in decentralized locations and in remote areas, e.g. B. for the continuous monitoring of the concentration of aerosols in the air, are limited or not suitable.
It is therefore the object of the invention to provide a relatively simple method and a relatively simple, easily transportable and only relatively low-energy device for monitoring the concentration of aerosols in a gaseous medium, in particular air.
The method according to claim 1 and the device according to claim 6 were found to solve this problem.
In the dependent claims, expedient and advantageous developments of the method and the device according to the invention are defined.
Da die für die Markierung der Aerosole benutzten radioaktiven Isotope s The invention is based on the idea that in a gaseous medium such. B. air, contained aerosols with relatively short-lived radioactive isotopes and then measure the radioactivity of the labeled aerosols deposited on a stationary filter. For this purpose, according to the invention, the gaseous medium containing the aerosols is conveyed through a chamber in which the isotopes used for the marking of the aerosols are generated at a constant production rate. Lead isotopes 211Pb (s), which have a half-life of 36.1 min and which are generated by the decay of the radon isotope 219Rn (g), which in turn originates from a long-lived actinium radiation source 227Ac (s ) emanates and has a half-life of only 4.0 s. It has been shown that the radioactivity of the aerosols deposited on the filter is proportional to the total surface area of the separated aerosols and thus a measure of the respective aerosol concentration. Since the radioactive isotopes used for labeling the aerosols s

verhältnismässig kurzlebig sind, zerfällt die am Filter akkumulierte Radioaktivität verhältnismässig rasch, was eine kontinuierlich oder in relativ kurzen Perioden erfolgende Messung und gegebenenfalls Registrierung der von der Aerosolkonzentration abhängigen Radioaktivität erlaubt, obwohl der Filter stationär ist. are relatively short-lived, the radioactivity accumulated on the filter disintegrates relatively quickly, which allows continuous or relatively short periods of measurement and, if appropriate, registration of the radioactivity dependent on the aerosol concentration, even though the filter is stationary.
While it is known e.g. B. from German Offenlegungsschriften 3 103 176 and 3 126 964, to measure the radioactivity concentration of a gas in the flow path of the gas to arrange a filter on which the radioactive aerosols contained in the gas are separated, and then to measure the radioactivity of the separated aerosols. In this known technique, however, a stationary filter has not been used, but a filter belt that is continuously moved, so that fresh portions of the filter belt are continuously filled with the aerosols separated from the gas and then transported to a radiation detector. In addition to the fact that a continuously moving filter belt requires a more complicated and complex device than a stationary filter, and also requires additional energy to drive the filter belt, the known technology is based on a completely different task than the present invention, namely a rapid measurement of time-varying radioactivity concentrations of a gas, whereby it is completely open how the variation of the radioactivity concentrations came about.
The method according to the present invention also measures radioactive concentrations of a gaseous medium which vary over time, but this is only part of the invention.
The invention is explained in more detail below, for example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which schematically shows a preferred exemplary embodiment of the device according to the invention. The device shown is intended for continuous or periodic monitoring of the concentration of aerosols in the atmospheric air.
This device has a first chamber 11, into which an air inlet pipe 12 is inserted. The mouth 13 of the air inlet tube 12, which is located in the interior of the chamber 11, is in the vicinity of a long-lasting radioactive radiation source 14 made of 227 actinium. A pipe 15 is provided for the air outlet from the chamber 11, the inlet opening 16 of which is arranged at a relatively large distance from the radiation source 14. The chamber 11 is hermetically sealed except for the air inlet 12, 13 and the air outlet 15, 16 and has a volume in the range from 100 to 1000 ml, preferably approximately 500 ml. The walls of the chamber 11 are, for. B. made of stainless steel or an aluminum alloy.
The pipeline 15 provided for the air outlet from the chamber 11 leads to a second chamber 17, which is divided into two spaces 17A and 17B by a micropore filter 18. The outlet mouth 19 of the pipeline 15 is located in a room 17A. The other space 17B is connected by means of a pipe socket 20 to the inlet 21 of a suction pump 22, the outlet 23 of which opens into the atmosphere. The suction pump 22 has the task of conveying air from the atmosphere through the inlet pipe 12, the first chamber 11, the pipeline 15 and the second chamber 17 and then releasing it back into the atmosphere. The delivery rate of the suction pump 22 is relatively low and is in the range from 150 to 500 ml / min, preferably around 250 ml / min. To drive the suction pump 22 is therefore a relatively small electric motor 24, the z. B. is powered by a battery 25. For reasons to be explained, the two of them
Chambers 11 and 17 interconnecting pipeline on an inner diameter in the range of 0.5 to 5 mm, preferably about 1 mm, and a length in the range of 0.5 to 10 m, preferably about 1.5 m. The pipeline 15 may be wrapped around the first chamber 11.
In the second chamber 17, expediently in the space 17A, into which the pipeline 15 opens, there is a detector 26 for alpha radiation, for example a barrier layer detector, which is connected via an electrical line 27 to a measuring and recording device 28 is. The electrical supply of the device 28 takes place either from the already mentioned battery 25 or from a further battery 29. The detector 26 expediently takes the form of an annular disk arranged parallel to the filter 18, through the central opening of which the portion of the pipeline 15 having the outlet mouth 19 protrudes .
The use and mode of operation of the described device and the method made possible with this device for monitoring the concentration of aerosols in the atmospheric air are as follows:
The 227 actinium radiation source 14 continuously emanates gaseous radioactive 219radon isotopes which have a half-life of only 4.0 s and decay into solid 21 'lead isotopes with a half-life of 36.1 min. These radioactive lead isotopes are produced at a constant production rate. Due to the suction effect of the suction pump 22, air is conveyed from the atmosphere into the first chamber 11 via the inlet pipe 12. If the air contains aerosols, the radioactive lead isotopes accumulate on the surfaces of the aerosols, whereby the latter are radiolabelled.
The air with the radioactively labeled aerosols contained therein is transported through the pipeline 15 into the second chamber 17 under the influence of the suction pump 22. Because of the relatively small inner diameter of the pipeline 15, the medium flowing through the latter assumes a relatively high speed, despite the low delivery capacity of the suction pump 22. As a result of the relatively high flow speed in the pipeline 15, the aerosols are inevitably entrained, and the relatively large length dimension of the pipeline 15 ensures a relatively uniform distribution of the aerosols in the air flow leaving the outlet mouth 19. In the second chamber 17, which is greatly expanded compared to the pipeline 15, the flow velocity of the air drops considerably. While the air passes through the pores of the filter 18 and is subsequently conveyed back into the atmosphere by means of the suction pump 22, the aerosols carried in the air are separated off on the filter 17 together with the radioactive isotopes attached to them. With the aid of the detector 26 and the connected device 28, the activity of the alpha radiation emanating from the isotopes is measured continuously or periodically and preferably also registered. The measurement results obtained in this way are proportional to the total surface of the radioactively labeled aerosols and consequently a measure of the respective aerosol concentrations.
B. nach mehreren Wochen Betriebsdauer, erfor5 Since the lead isotopes used to mark the aerosols have a relatively short half-life of 36.1 minutes, the radioactivity accumulated on the filter 17 decays relatively quickly. A continuous or periodic determination of the concentration of aerosols contained in the air is therefore possible with sufficient accuracy without the filter having to be moved or exchanged between successive measurements. A replacement of the filter 17 is only in relatively large time intervals, for. B. after several weeks of operation
