The alkylation reaction (1) can be carried out in the presence of a base. Suitable bases are inorganic alkali metal carbonates, e.g. Sodium carbonate or potassium carbonate, or organic amines such as e.g. Trialkylamines, e.g. triethylamine or pyridine compounds such as e.g. Pyridine or 2,6-dimethylpyridine. Generally, essentially equimolar amounts of reactants (X) and (XI) and base are used. In a modification of the reaction, a molar excess of the aniline reactant (X) can be used as the base and no further base is used. The reaction is usually carried out in an inert organic solvent, e.g. apolar diprotic solvents, e.g. Dimethylformamide and acetonitrile and aromatic hydrocarbon agents such as Benzene or toluene, at reaction temperatures in the range from 25 ° C to 150 ° C, preferably from 50 ° C to 150 ° C. Water can be used as an auxiliary solvent. The reaction pressure can be atmospheric pressure or negative or positive pressure. However, for the sake of simplicity, the reaction is generally carried out at atmospheric pressure. The reaction time can vary depending on the reactants used and the reaction temperature. The reaction time is generally between 0.25 and 24 hours. The product (XII) is generally purified by conventional procedures, such as extraction, distillation or crystallization, before it is used for the acylation reaction (2).
