The invention relates to a current-conducting electrode for metallurgical furnaces with a consumable electrode tip and a liquid-carrying cooling system, as well as a method for producing the electrode.
In the EP patent application No. 82 109 375.4, a graphite or carbon electrode for metallurgical furnaces is described, which is cooled by an internal cooling system below the burn-off temperature of the graphite. When using this electrode, it has been found that depending on the cooling system, particularly where it consists of longitudinal copper tubing, some or all of the electrical current can be conducted through the copper tubing. The current then flows from the electrode contact pads via the graphite to the copper tube cooling system. The current flow in the graphite is positively influenced by the fact that the electrical resistance reaches a minimum at the operating temperature of the electrode of around 600 °C.
The water-carrying cooling system of the electrode also serves as a clamping system in connection with the end flanges, so that the graphic body can also be assembled from several pieces.
Depending on how the furnace is operated, for example when working with a foamed slag, it can happen that spatters of the hot and aggressive slag are thrown onto the lower part of the cooled graphite electrode, similar to the process that is called "self-coating" in connection with water-cooled walls . This can lead to some chemical reaction erosion at the bottom of the electrode.
Diese Aufgabe wird gemäss der Erfindung dadurch gelöst, dass zurThe object of the present invention is to design an electrode of the type described above in such a way that this erosion can be avoided by simple means. This object is achieved according to the invention in that for
Avoidance of chemical erosion in the lower area where the graphite is at least partially coated and/or replaced by ceramic shaped stones with good thermal conductivity.
A method based on aluminum (aluminum plating) is known for coating normal graphite electrodes. However, the aluminum reacts in a similar way to the graphite with the aggressive slag and is therefore out of the question for the present application. Surprisingly, however, it has been shown that high-melting metals and/or metal oxides that are resistant to the slags can be applied to the graphite electrode using the metal spraying process or metal by means of electroplating and offer permanent and effective protection. In addition to requirements such as impact resistance, toughness and good thermal conductivity, it is particularly important to ensure that the protective layer has the same or only a slightly larger coefficient of expansion than graphite, even in the range of the working temperature of the electrode. AhO.î or molybdenum, for example, is suitable for coating for the working range of the water-cooled graphite electrode of around 600 °C.
However, since it is also possible to conduct the current flow via the copper cooling system, it can be advantageous in some cases to replace the graphite in the lower part of the cooled electrode with ceramic shaped bricks, which have good thermal conductivity and are resistant to aggressive slag . Here, for example, carbonaceous AhCb bricks, MgO bricks or magnesite bricks have proven themselves.
A water-cooled graphite electrode 1 with a ceramic lower part 2 is shown in the figure. The total length of the electrode is, for example, about 4000 mm with a diameter of 500 mm. The height of the ceramic part is approximately 800 mm and dimensioned in such a way that the contact jaws (not shown) of the electrode holder 3 are always in contact with graphite when repositioning.
The copper pipes with cooling water inlet and outlet are denoted by 4. In this example, two graphite shots 5 are connected with a graphite nipple 6. The box 7 is preserved in the upper graphite shot, so that the entire graphite part 5 can still be nippled onto the water-cooled copper nipple 8 as a consumable tip after removal from the electrode. The lower flange 9 is made of copper and is also cooled. The upper flange 10 is made of austenitic steel, for example. It protrudes slightly beyond the graphite 5 in order to prevent the electrode 1 from slipping through the holder 3 for safety reasons. The length of the electrode is also dimensioned for safety reasons in such a way that if it were to slip through in the lowermost position of the electrode holder 3, the water-cooled nipple 8 cannot dip into the liquid bath.
The flanges 9 and 10, in conjunction with the cooling tubes 4 and the nuts 11, serve as a clamping unit for the graphite pieces 5 and the ceramic part 2. This clamping could also be released in a different way than shown. It is also possible to insert an additional tie rod or tie tube 12 made of a material with a higher strength than copper into the system. If it is a tube, it can also be used to add gases or solids in the vicinity of the arc 13. In this case, the lower copper flange 9 with the copper nipple 8 and the consumable graphite tip 14 must also be drilled through 15.
In this representation, the lower copper flange 9 is provided on the outside with a recess 16 which is filled with electrically insulating materials (in the example shown with an asbestos cord 17). This avoids the formation of arcs that could destroy the flange.
