Description
The present invention relates to a method for producing a multimode optical fiber which is resistant to short-term and long-term ionization or neutron radiation and has a gradient index from a fiber blank.
GB Patent Specification No. 1475496 describes a process for the production of optical fibers, in which the inner wall of a silicon dioxide substrate tube is provided with a deposition layer which consists of an oxide of a single element, e.g. B. Germanium dioxide, which oxide is diffusible in silicon dioxide to form a glass with a higher refractive index than that of silicon dioxide. The coating is brought about by a reaction involving chemical vapor deposition, e.g. from a halide of a single element; after coating the tube, it is subjected to a collapse process, which results in a fiber blank. This blank is then pulled down to an optical fiber. In an alternative operation, the glass of the desired composition, e.g. As silicon dioxide-germanium dioxide or multiple combinations of these oxides can be deposited directly.
It has been found that ionization or neutron radiation from an optical fiber leads to an increase in attenuation losses, which is very unfavorable. The absorptions, which cause the mentioned increases in attenuation losses, are radiation dose and time dependent. According to the literature, it can be assumed that fibers made from pure silicon dioxide give the best long-term results regarding radiation resistance, but often at the expense of short-term attenuation peaks. In GB Patent No. 2083 921 it was shown that optical fibers with good radiation resistance can be produced from a binary silica-germanium dioxide core and a binary silica-boron trioxide jacket. It is known that fibers whose doped core contains phosphorus pentoxide can suppress short-term attenuation peaks, however at the expense of a long-term increase in attenuation losses. So far, there has been a belief that optical fibers with germanium-doped cores are not expected to have good long-term properties in terms of their radiation resistance.
The purpose of the present invention is to describe an optical fiber with a germanium-doped core containing phosphorus pentoxide, which fiber has good long-term properties with regard to its radiation resistance.
The characteristic features of the method according to the invention for producing such a fiber can be found in the wording of patent claim 1.
In one exemplary embodiment of the method according to the invention, the substrate tube, on the inner wall of which the aforementioned vapor deposition takes place, (in a manner which is described in the aforementioned GB patent) has the following dimensions: length 1.3 m, outer diameter 14 mm, wall thickness 1.2 mm . The material of the tube is silicon dioxide, the cleaning is done by acid etching, washing in high-purity water and finally drying.
The first deposits on the inner wall of the tube form the optical cladding of the fiber in the final phase of production, which is a SiO ^ / BiOrBinary glass; three layers were deposited with the following vapor deposition parameters:
a) Ein SiCl4-Trägergasfluss bei 133 cm3/min, wobei Sauerstoff als Trägergas verwendet wurde. a) An SiCl4 carrier gas flow at 133 cm3 / min, using oxygen as the carrier gas.
A BBr3 carrier gas flow at 50 cm3 / min, again using oxygen as the carrier gas. In both cases a and b, the device from which the Si er or BBr3 vapor carriers originated was kept at a temperature of 21.degree.
An additional gas flow at 1920 cm3 / min, oxygen was used.
d) Eine Ablagerungstemperatur von 1690°C. d) A deposit temperature of 1690 ° C.
The deposition process just mentioned is followed by a further deposition, which will one day form the Si02 / Ge02 / P205 core; forty layers were deposited here using the following parameters:
a) Ein SiCl4-Trägergasfluss bei 138cm3/min, wobei Sauerstoff als Trägergas verwendet wurde. a) A SiCl4 carrier gas flow at 138 cm3 / min, using oxygen as the carrier gas.
A GeCl4 carrier flow at 0-150cm3 / min, using oxygen as the carrier gas. This gas flow is increased in 40 steps to form a gradient fiber with an a value of approximately 2.1, (a is the key figure which characterizes the course of the index in the fiber core - see "Electrical Communication", Volume 50, No. 3, 1975, page 169.)
A POCI3 gas flow at a value in the range of 0.5 to 10 cm3 / min, using oxygen as the carrier gas.
d) Ein zusätzlicher Gasfluss bei 1800cm3/min. d) An additional gas flow at 1800 cm3 / min.
e) Eine Ablagerungstemperatur, die vom POCl3-Trägergas-fluss abhängt und zwischen 1700°C bei 10cm3/min und 1760°C bei 0,5cm3/min variiert. e) A deposition temperature that depends on the POCl3 carrier gas flow and varies between 1700 ° C at 10cm3 / min and 1760 ° C at 0.5cm3 / min.
The total deposition time is approximately five hours. For the collapse process that creates the blank, two passes of a heat source at 2100 ° C are used, the total time required being approximately 1.5 hours.
The resulting blank has a diameter of approximately 8.5 mm, which is then pulled down in a high-temperature oven to form a fiber 2.5 km long and 125 µm in outside diameter. The optical core has a diameter of 50 μm and the optical cladding has a thickness of approximately 3 μm, the numerical aperture being 0.2.
The attached table shows experimental results on a number of fibers that have been produced with various POCl3 gas flows in the range mentioned above5

For comparison purposes, a fiber made using the process of GB Pantent No. 1475496 mentioned above is also used.
• It is clearly evident that the new fibers in the short-term range (of the order of 10 ms) are more resistant to radiation than conventional fibers, without these properties deteriorating at times of the order of 30 minutes.
The core deposition temperature is 20-80 ° C lower than that required to make the binary core of the fiber in the aforementioned GB Patent No. 2,083,921, depending on the POCl3 gas flow. The range of the core composition, determined by scanning electron microscope scanning of the split fiber end, is as follows:
Si ca 38 Gewichtsprozente, Si about 38 percent by weight,
Ge ca, jedoch maximal, 11 Gewichtsprozente, gemessenin der Kernmitte, Ge ca, but maximum, 11 percent by weight, measured in the center of the core,
O ca 51 Gewichtsprozente, und O about 51 percent by weight, and
P in the range of 0.02 to 0.34 percent by weight for a POCl3 gas flow of 0.5 to 10 cm3 / min.
The optimum P concentration according to the table is in the range of 0.02 to 0.17 percent by weight, at which the fibers tested have the lowest sensitivity to radiation. But otherwise, as already mentioned, the fibers according to the invention are more resistant to radiation than conventional fibers.
In the radiation tests, a pulse X-ray source, which delivered 600rd in less than 1 ms with a peak of the energy spectrum at 0.5 MeV, was used. The comparatively low damping10 should be emphasized for the new fiber
Losses in short times (about 10ms) without having to accept increased losses in long times. According to the method according to the invention, e.g. a fiber can be made whose loss of attenuation at 30 minutes is approximately the same as that made according to the aforementioned GB Patent No. 2,083,921, but the loss at 10 ms is only about 60% of the loss of the conventional fiber.
Another advantage of the new fiber is a better yield in production, which is due to a lower deposition temperature. As a result, there are fewer problems with geometry controls.
