Description
The invention relates to a transparent, cold-stretch, self-sealing film (film) suitable for the packaging of foods, such as fresh meats, fruit, vegetables, fodder and frozen foods, which can be used both manually and on semi-automatic or automatic machines, suitable for supermarkets and prepackaging centers.
The film has been designed to be free from the drawback of being able to release traces of substances harmful to food in contact, which occurs in known PVC films, and to offer low production costs and effective functionality in use.
Basically the film is made up of at least two superimposed layers of thermoplastic material in perfect adherence, different from each other, the first of which - which provides the mechanical characteristics, acting as a support - results from a mixture of linear low density polyethylene (LL.DP ) and Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) with a vinyl acetate content of around 12%, while the second layer - which is used to obtain the permeability to gases and water vapor suitable for the particular use, and the stickiness for self-sealing - it essentially consists of Ethylenevenyl acetate (EVA) with a vinyl acetate content of around 30%, with the addition of percentages of jonomeric resin, to modify its permeability characteristics and anti-condensation material.
The drawing shows a non-limiting example of the invention.

Figg. Figs. 3 and 4 show respective perspective and side views of a package of fresh meat for supermarkets or the like, wrapped with the film according to the invention, before sealing.
Come le pellicole estensibili di PVC fortemente plastificato finora The film according to the invention, generally indicated by 1, consists of at least two layers 3 and 5 superimposed and joined together along the entire surface so that separation is impossible. The thickness of the film - also in relation to the so-called "disposable" type of use, for wrapping portions, even of modest weight, of fresh food, in supermarkets or the like - is very thin, usually within the range of 10 to 25 M - »greater thicknesses being used, for example, for packages of considerable weight or dimensions or intended to be handled several times, with a greater risk of tearing. normalmente impiegate, la pellicola secondo l'invenzione può essere usata per confezionare cibi disposti su vassoietti aperti 7, come mostrato nelle figg. 3 e 4; oppure, come nel caso di pezzi di formaggi a consistenza solida, la pellicola viene usata senza vassoietto. normally used, the film according to the invention can be used to pack food arranged on open trays 7, as shown in figs. 3 and 4; or, as in the case of pieces of cheese with a solid consistency, the film is used without a tray.
In both cases the film is stretched (manually by the operator, or with suitable devices on automatic or semi-automatic machines) in both directions on the upper surface of the food to be packaged and "tucked" under the tray, or the piece with a solid consistency by pulling and overlapping its edges for a discreet stretch, such as those indicated by 9, 11 and 13, which are then pressed with the aid of a heated plate against the bottom 7F of the tray (or against the lower surface of the piece with a consistency solid) so that they adhere to each other, keeping the film under tension and sealing the package.
To satisfy the methods of use thus briefly described, the film according to the invention has characteristics of extensibility and stickiness at least equal to those of the plasticized PVC film in use so far, without the drawback that PVC has the ability to give traces to packaged foods. even minimal (evaluable as «parts per million») of substances suspected of being harmful, such as vinyl monomer, plasticizers, such as DOA, etc. Characteristically, according to the invention, this extensibility and stickiness are obtained by making the two layers 3 and 5 differentiated, to the first layer - which acts as a support - the mechanical characteristics of the film being due, i.e. the extensibility combined with the resistance to tearing or cracking , and the second layer being due to the stickiness to make the film self-sealing as well as the characteristic of the right permeability to gases and water vapor. In essence, for a good preservation of fresh food it is usually necessary that the film destined to wrap them is only partially impermeable to gases and vapors, while for aesthetic purposes it is necessary that no condensation is visible inside the film that dominates the packaged material.
To give rise to the characteristics mentioned, the two differentiated layers are obtained from mixtures of thermoplastic materials, the composition of which must result from certain components dosed within a certain range of percentage contents. We will now indicate - with the relative range within which they can vary - the components of each layer, the percentages of use for a technically optimal result, as well as those for a result that is certainly favorable for the purposes of practical applications, but also corresponding to a relatively cheap production cost.
The first layer of the film according to the invention is obtained from a mixture of linear low density polyethylene (which is commonly indicated with the initials LLDP corresponding to the initials of its denomination in English) and of ethylene vinyl acetate (which is commonly indicated with the initials EVA ) having a relatively low vinyl acetate content, i.e. around 12%. The second layer, on the other hand, consists essentially of Etzilenvinilacetato (abbreviation EVA) with a relatively high vinyl acetate content, that is around 30%; this second layer can also result from 100% EVA, but for practical applications it is preferable to mix with said EVA a certain percentage of jonomeric resin, such as SURLYN or similar, and a certain percentage of anti-condensation material (in English «antifog»), of the type commonly used in thermoplastic film for wrapping food. The jonomeric resin which is used in the mixture of the second layer is usually a copolymer of ethylene with acrylic or methacrylic acid, in whose molecule there are ionic bonds due to the presence of Zn and Na atoms. The jonomeric resin gives the film according to the invention, in a more or less pronounced way, the characteristics of permeability to the gases and vapors mentioned, for the purpose of preserving fresh food.
The low density linear polyethylene of the mixture of the first layer must be of rather low grade (or melt index) preferably of grade 1. This linear polyethylene can also be partially replaced, to lower the cost of the product, with common low density polyethylene and characteristics suitable for the production of thin films and therefore also of low grade (or melt index).
The intervals within which the percentages of the components of the first layer and of the second layer may vary within which the film according to the invention has the properties of cold extensibility and self-sealing, together with that of the right permeability to gases and vapors, are the following:

From an economic point of view, results are obtained without any other favorable - for the purposes of functionality, in the specific use of the packaging and storage of fresh food, together with a production cost that makes the product competitive - with the following percentages:

The film according to the invention still has acceptable functional characteristics with the percentage content of the components of the first layer which corresponds to the lowest possible cost, while, as is clear from the foregoing, the composition of the second layer is mainly established in relation to the use to which the film is intended and allows only in part variations in order to lower costs.

2) interposed between the two differentiated layers described. The intermediate layer, having the function of "barrier", can be constituted by a thin film of Polyvinyl Chloride (abbreviation PVDC) or by a thin film of polyamide resin (for example Nylon).
Both in the case in which it is made in two layers and in the case in which an intermediate layer is interposed, the film according to the invention can be produced according to the common coextrusion processes for obtaining coextruded thin films. However, it is preferable to obtain such a film by coextrusion and blow molding using the method and equipment described in the Italian Patent Application for Industrial Invention filed on 9.5.80 with No. 9426 A / 80 in the name of PULEO Gaspare, in Italy.
It is however evident that the film according to the invention - in only two layers, or with the addition of an intermediate layer - can be produced by making the layers separately and subsequently coupling them together using normal methods and normal production equipment of coupled films.
The film according to the invention can also be made heat-shrinkable, using known processes, for particular types of use, always in the field of preserving food or food products.
The advantages of the film according to the invention are evident, which validly replaces the cold extensible PVC film, in the use of the preservation of fresh (or frozen) food without presenting the inconvenience of yielding, to the foods with which the film comes into contact, traces of harmful components. From rigorous experiments carried out it has been found that said leathers-15 cola is chemically inert and does not give rise to the release of traces, although minimal, of substances of any kind. Even subjecting the film to the release test in vegetable oil, which is the most severe, the transfer is zero.
