PATENT CLAIMS
1. Process for the preparation of 2-aryl-pyridines of the general formula
EMI1.1
from aryl nitriles of the general formula
EMI1.2
where X in both formulas = Cl, Br, F, amino, CF3, OH, OR, where R = Cl-Ca is alkyl or substituted alkyl, by reaction with acetylene in the presence of cobalt-organic catalysts, characterized in that the reaction at temperatures of 100 to 250 C under an acetylene pressure of 4 to 30 bar in a period between minutes and several hours.
2. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that one carries out the reaction in the temperature range from 140 to 220 C.
3. The method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the acetylene pressure is set in the range from 15 to 25 bar.
4. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that one carries out the reaction in a suitable solvent.
5. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the reaction time in the preferred temperature range of 140 to 220 "C is between 5 minutes and 3 hours.
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2-aryl-pyridines (I) from acetylene and aryl-nitriles (II) in the presence of organic cobalt catalysts.
It is known that 2-arylpyridines, mixed with 3 or 4-arylpyridines, can be prepared by reacting aryldiazonium salts and pyridine [NL-Appl. 6414307]. Another way to make 2-aryl-pyridines is to react aryl-lithium compounds with pyridine [Gilman and Edward, Can. J. Chem. 31 457 (1953)].
Furthermore, 2-aryl-pyridine can be obtained by reaction of pyridine
N-oxide can be prepared with anisole in the presence of acetic anhydride [Cohen and Deets, J. Org. Chem. 37 55 (1972)].
All of these procedures are expensive; aryl lithium compounds are also extremely difficult to handle, and finally the mostly low yields are often still contaminated with the 3- and 4-isomers, which are difficult, if at all, to remove.
The aim of the present invention is to carry out the reaction in the cobalt catalyst production of 2-arylpyridines (I) from aryl nitriles (II) and acetylene in such a way that a high product yield is obtained with high catalyst utilization.
According to the invention, this is achieved by reacting corresponding aryl nitriles with acetylene at temperatures between 100 to 250 ° C., pressures from 4 to 30 bar, in the presence of cocatalysts in a period of time between minutes and several hours.
The preferred reaction temperature is 140 to 220 C.
To ensure saturation with acetylene during the reaction, the reaction is carried out in an autoclave with an agitator. The acetylene pressure is preferably between 15 and 25 bar, the reaction time at a preferred temperature and pressure range between 5 minutes and 3 hours.
Suitable solvents for carrying out the reaction can be used: benzene, toluene, aliphatic ether, tetrahydrofuran, ethyl acetate, ethanol, aliphatic ketones such as e.g. Methyl ethyl ketone, pyridine, pyridine bases, decalin, tetalin, diisopropylbenzene and others which are inert to the reactants under the reaction conditions. Benzene, toluene or tetrahydrofuran are preferably used.
The concentration of the aryl nitrile (II) used in the solvent can vary between 5% and over 99%, but is preferably 15 to 75%.
The reaction can also be carried out without a solvent.
All cyclopentadienyl cobalt compounds, such as e.g. Cobaltocen, cyclopentadienyl-cobalt-cyclooctadiene, indenyl-cobalt-cyclooctadiene, cyclopentadienyl-cobalt-dicarbonyl, the formal oxidation state of cobatl being one and two, respectively.
The procedure according to the invention is preferably carried out as follows:
A solution of the nitrile of the general formula (II) in tetrahydrofuran, mixed with 0.1 to 1.0 mol%, preferably with 0.2 to 0.4 mol% of an cobalt organic compound as a catalyst, is in an autoclave, which has a good stirrer, saturated with 4 to 30 bar acetylene, preferably 15 to 25 bar, and heated to 100 to 250 "C, preferably to 140 to 220" C. During the exothermic reaction, the used acetylene is continuously pressed in such a way that the pressure conditions can be kept constant at the stated number of bars.
After a reaction time of 5 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the temperature, the system is brought to room temperature, the pressure is released and the reaction liquid containing the 2-arylpyridine of the general formula (I) is converted from the unreacted aryl nitrile of the general formula (11 ) purified by fractional distillation or by an extraction process.
The yields to be achieved by this process are practically 100% with a catalyst utilization of up to 185 moles per mole of catalyst used.
The 2-aryl-pyridines are used either as the sole active ingredient or as an intermediate for the production of crop protection agents and plastics.
